Well, just about 25 minutes ago we got a tweet from caltrain that after checking it out, we found out that there was a train that hit a pedestrian on the caltrain line near california and oak grove. And now were finding out that pedestrian has died. Caltrain is announcing the train 305 was involved, and there is a bus bridge in place taking people away from the incident. So if you take caltrain this morning, there will be major delays. Our reporter alex savidge is Just Moments Away from the scene and he will have a live report from the scene coming up very shortly. Those specially trained k9s on scene as well as crime scene investigators. A lot of activity here at the scene of this fire from yesterday. Those scenes the firefighters have actually up a new new barrier to create space for vehicles to come in over the course of the day. The fire claimed the life of a fiveyearold. Investigators are looking to see if the fire was set on purpose. A man fought his way into that home trying to save the boy inside. Smoke started pouring out of the house 10 00 yesterday morning in the crests neighborhood in vallejo. The mother of the fiveyearold and her teenage son managed to make it out, but a fiveyear old boy trapped in the back bedroom. Neighbors rushed into the home. A man crawled inside home and sprayed it down with a hose but he could not northbound to a little boy. A neighbor said her son tried to rescue the child as well. My son also, weighs the first one to try to get over the fence and his knee he busted his knee getting over the fence trying to get to him. Reporter yeah. We can see the blood that that young man suffered from an injury trying to get into the home trying to rescue the home. Unfortunately, the fiveyear old died by the time that fire crews found him. The mother suffering second and thirddegree burns. She was flown to the burn center at uc davis medical center. Investigators here on scene with specially trained dogs to sniff for possible signs of arson. The mother said her and her husband had an argument before the fire. Investigators looking to see if there is any connection between that dispute and the fire. A great deal of activity. You might be able to see that k 9 unit out here as well. There is going to be a long day of investigating over of the course of the day. If you have been following our progress this morning, this morning we were closer to the home and we have been pushed back twice to accommodate more investigative vehicles and more investigators expected through the day in vallejo. Christian, going on what you said the mother told investigators, do you know whether or not the investigators have talked to the father yet . Reporter thats one of the things we are working to determine exactly who they have talked to, how much they have talked to the father. They have talked to the mother. Its a case of kidnapping and murder, but a body has never been find. Today a trial is scheduled to begin for a man accused of killing sierra lamar. Ktvu fox 2s janine de la vega, youre in san jose. Youre at the courthouse. A lot of people are wondering will this trial finally start . Reporter dave, its possible there could be a delay. This is a highprofile case of a teenager vanished, presumed dead. The dna evidence is overwhelming. The defense for the suspect have been asking for more time to review evidence because they are tied up on other cases. Garciatorres is accused of kidnapping and murdering 15 yearold sierra lamar. She was last seen walking to her bus stop to 2012. Garciatorres has been sitting jail for four years now. Prosecutors say sierras dna was found in garciatorres car and his dna was discovered on her clothing discard inside a field. If convicted, he faces the death penalty. Garciatorres had recently asked the court for new Defense Attorneys because he wanted a speedy trial. He withdraw that request recently. The chp meantime searching for the person who fired shots on interstate 580 in richmond last night. It happened just after 5 30 on the westbound side of the freeway near rigatta boulevard. There have been several shootings on bay area freeways in the past couple of months. The police think some are gang related. If you have any information, call the chp. Time is 7 08 senator hill and supporters will rally today for a bill that would require ignition interlock devices for all convicted dwi offenders. Its set for a hearing on friday. Senator hill says the bill must be passed by that day in order to be brought to the full senate for decision. They test the breath of driver and prevent the car from starting if the driver has been drinking. There is a Pilot Program in four counties, including alameda. Edward nero is one of six officers charged in the case. Prosecutors kay he unlawfully rested gray and he was negligent by putting him in the back of a police van with no seat belt. Gray died from a spinal injury after his arrest. Neros lawyers says he didnt arrest gray and it was the van drivers responsibility to buckle in freddie gray. In the race for the white house now president ial frontrunners donald trump and Hillary Clinton are clashing over the issue of gun control. The National Rifle Association Just endorsed trump, and trump told the nras annual meeting Hillary Clinton would prevent lawabiding citizens from owning guns. Clinton called trumps position on the Second Amendment dangerous saying he promotes guns in classrooms. She is reading off a teleprompter. She always does. She doesnt have her own words. Train number 305 hit a pedestrian near california drive in oak grove which crosses the track here very close to burlingame high school. The traffic is going to be affected or the trains, i should say, are going to be affected on caltrain. Caltrain is running a bus bridge between millbrae and hayward park station in san mateo in both directions and picking up passengers. Ktvus alex savidge is now on the scene speaking with authorities. We are going to find out a little bit more about what happened. But we know for sure that this is a major delay for caltrain. Lets move along and take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. You have the Fire Department personnel and also members of caltrain who are out here investigating this accident that happened this morning. A man struck and killed by a northbound caltrain. Northbound 305 train that struck this person who was walking across the tracks for some reason. We understand this was an adult. A man who was hit and killed here. As you can see, a largescale investigation is underway. All trains are stopped in this area for the time being. Of course, that will have a major impact on the commute. Just to give you a sense of where we are, we are right between the millbrae station and the burlingame station at the oak grove avenue crossing. All trains are stopped. A bus bridge has been set up by samtrans to get people between those two stations who normally would use caltrain. A short time ago i had a chance to speak to a man who was riding by on his bike this morning to get up to the millbrae station because of the fact the trains were stopped. We were there. Everybody need to take off. And the train would be waiting in millbrae. For most of the people that would take off the train and then waiting for the bus and they would shut them down to millbrae to get the train out of the way to San Francisco the because i have a bike, make most sense i just bike from san mateo to millbrae to catch the train. Reporter so again this is one of the people who is forced to find another way to get between the millbrae excuse me, between the burlingame station and million grey station because all cal trains are stopped in this area. There are yellow gates, you guys, that close and let people know when a train is going by, that you arent supposed to be crossing here. It appears that they were operational. Obviously, that is going to make for a big delay on the system and you might want to think about doing another way this morning rather than caltrain if you are already out there. Now we are learning more about the death of keith green. The father from millbrae. Police raided a home in hillsboro Early Saturday Morning. They arrested tiffany lee, greens exgirlfriend. Greens roommate reported his missing april 28. A hiker found greens cell phone in Golden Gate Park the next day and then greens body was found on may 11th along the Sonoma County freeway. The San Mateo County jail official told ktvu that tiffany lees current boyfriend has also been arrested in connection with greens death. He is pocketed to be charged expecting be charged with murder. San franciscos new acting police chief Toney Chaplin wants to rebuild trust in the Police Department. Yesterday he started by meeting members of the Third Baptist Church. He says communication is the First Step Towards building that trust. Church members say relations between the Police Department and people who live in the city have been strained after several deadly officerinvolved shootings in the next few months. He says changes will come quickly in the department. Some get it right away. Those are the officers that go to the schools and they do what they are supposed to do. Some get it sooner or later. Those are the ones that may slip up a little bit. We can train them. Some never get it. Those are the ones we want to send to the commission and say they be separated from the Police Department. People said they liked what they heard. They said they want to be included in the section process for whoever is chosen. 7 33. A developing story out of monterey county. Firefighters battling a wildfire fueled by strong winds. It started about 3 30 yesterday afternoon near soledad. Look at that picture posted by calfire on twitter. The fire spread to almost 4,000 acres in a couple of hours, and its only 20 contained. So far we havent heard of any injuries or homes being threatened. Meantime, the chp says all lanes of westbound 580 in livermore are back open again. But thats after a car fire. It happened last night along 580 and flynn road north near the Lawrence Livermore laboratory. Flames spread to nearby brush. Firefighters were called in. It burned about ten acres, but no one was hurt. Today is the deadline for californians to register to vote for the june 7th president ial primary. But supporters of Bernie Sanders are suing to extend that deadline until election day. A lawsuit claims there is a lot of confusion about the states president ial primary rules. Especially for voters registered for many preference. Many dont know they can request a democratic ballot. If they dont they get a primary ballot with no president ial ballots. Supporters want a Public Awareness campaign. A lot of people have got their vote by mail ballot, and they dont have bernie on it because they are no party preference. The secretary of state says he hasnt seen the lawsuit yet but says its unrealistic. He adds his office has posted information for voters online in press releases and on social media. 7 35. President obama, who is now in vietnam, lifted a ban on selling weapons to vietnam. The president made the announcement during his three day visit to that country and said that both sides have established a level of trust and cooperation. This is seen as an attempt by the u. S. To counter the growing influence of china in southeast asia. The United States is fully lifting the ban on the sale of military equipment to vietnam that has been in place for some 50 years. Sales will need to still meet strict requirements, including those related to human rights. President obama also announced today that for the First Time Since the Vietnam War Peace corps volunteers will now be invited into vietnam. An alumnus of san jose state is among five people who died during a Music Festival in the philippines. The only american who died is identified this morning as 33 yearold eric miller who is seen here on his linkedin page. He graduated from san jose in 2005. He moved to the philippines. He was attending a concert in a suburb of manila over the weekend when he and four other people at the concert collapsed. This morning the cause of his death is under investigation. Police warning people in burlingame be on alert after two dogs had to be rescued from a coyote. Police say the coyote may have been protecting its pups from those two dogs. Now, police were able to scare the coyote off. They escorted the hikers out of the park. Police are now reminding everybody pets should always be fed indoors and when they are out on a walk they should be on a leash. They also say hikers shouldnt be afraid of scaring coyotes with either loud noises or bright lights. 7 37. Researchers are still trying to figure out exactly why so many whales are being spot inside the bay these days. The chronicle reports there have been a Record Number of sight ins. Researchers docked along the embarcadero counted 60 per day. They say they have had been ten blue whale sightings in the last week. Experts believe its because the whales are hungry and they are following prey. Time is 7 37. Four years after a man was arrested for the kidnapping and killing of sierra lamar, his trial is finally scheduled to begin. Security Officials Say the two bombers targeted young men seeking to join the army in the Southern City of aiden. A suicide car bomber targeted a line of men outside an Army Recruitment center. A second bomber detonated his explosive among a kuip of recruits waiting outside the home of a Army Commander should a tour bus carrying women from a church group turned over in san bernardino. That injured at least 20 people. This happened yesterday afternoon along state route 330. They were returning from a Church Retreat in the mountains back to the church in downey. They were part of a caravan of 200 women. All of those injured are expected to survive. At had point investigators are looking into what caused that bus to overturn. 7 41. Police in pittsburg have a way to keep people safe when they meet with buyers or sellers on craigslist. According to advanced Interactive Media group, more than 100 people have been killed as a result of interactions from craigslist. Now, while there havent been any major craigslist robberies reported in pittsburg, there have been craigslist victims here in the bay area who have been targeted and held up. So the Police Department has created safe zones where people can meet to carry out their transactions. Its a simple concept. Its, you know, if you want to purchase something on the internet and dont feel comfortable going to somebodys house, come to the Police Department. We have two parking stalls that are marked. Identifiable. If its in the nighttime, its a well lit area. Its right in front of the Police Department and its under 24 hour surveillance. The police say those officers wont be there during the transaction, but there will be plenty of them Walking Around these safe zones. Time is 7 42. A classaction lawsuit and a new study claim fitbits popular heart Rate Trackers are highly inaccurate. Pam cook is back in the studio with that study, pam, and how the company is responding. Researchers at cal poly pomona did the study. They tested the heart rates of 43 healthy adults. The researchers placed fitbits pure pulse heart rate monitors that use the companys surge watches and charge hr bands on each of the adults wrists. They were hooked up to a machine that records the hearts rhythm or ekg. That report was then compared to the readings on the fitbit bands, and the results show that fitbits miscalculated the heart rates by up to 20 beats per minute. The study was commissioned by the law firm that is behind the classaction lawsuit against three fitbit models that used that pure pulse heart monitor. Now, fitbit has responded to the study on giz modeo. It calls it biased and bayless. It reads, quote, it was paid for by plaintiffs lawyers who are suing fitbit and cop ducted with a consumer grade electrocardiogram. Not a true clinical device. Customers and doctors agree that you have to take some of this information with a grain of salt. Of course, it is used as a fitness tool. Not the endall. Especially if you have a heart condition and you want to clearly monitor that. And its kind of interesting because this is the fitbit of one of our directors. Oh, really . You know, it monitors your steps. Right. He has about 200 steps when he is driving his car. Plenty of articles about that saying, yes, if you hit a bumpy road. I see. So youre not walking while youre driving. Its not completely accurate. Again kind of interesting. But not just taken lightly now. A classaction lawsuit. A man in alaska lucky to be live after a brown bear attacked him. This is kenny on right. He was getting water during a camping trip when the bear charged towards him, clawed his leg, crushed his shoulder blade, and bit his head. I was facing the bear the whole time as it was running. I just remember the sounds really vividly. I remember hearing it. I remember the sound of it breathing. I remember, you know, the sound of it snarling. He will never forget that. Stec ks wife and others were yelling. The bear let him go. His wife and three other people on the camping trip are nurses. So they were able to do first aid immediately before help arrived. He spent four days in the hospital. He has a long recovery ahead, but says he is already doing better than he thought he would. This next story was an actual wild goose chase. Oakland police are calling it their slowest pursuit ever. That car didnt stall out. Police posted this video to their Facebook Page yesterday. They added the music, of course. We have that caltrain incident where a pedestrian was fatally struck by train number 305 this morning earlier. Now caltrain is not running trains between the Millbrae Transit Center and san mateo. Most of the people are going south. Some people are going north. And we do have a bus bridge between those stations here, but the trains are turning around at millbrae and san mateo. That means there are major delays on caltrain this morning because of the incident right near the burlingame station here. And thats what happened. Alex savidge is on the scene and he is going to have more for us coming up shortly. Lets go out and take a look at the commute in San Francisco along southbound 101. We do have some slow traffic there as you head south out of the city. We havent had any major problems here, but traffic is going to be bunching up leaving the city. A commute at the bay bridge thats still robust. Its backed up out to the macarthur maze. And the metering lights are on. I want to mention that there is a crash in the southbound 85 north of camden avenue. Sorry, northbound 58 at camden. Watch for traffic there. We will talk more about that next time around. 7 47. Well, a person was hit this morning by a caltrain in burlingame about an hour and a half ago now, and obviously that stopped Caltrain Service in burlingame. We do have pretty big delays on caltrain. You can see firefighters are on the tracks along with caltrain investigators trying to figure out what happened here. One of the things that we do know is that the victim, we were told by authorities, was an adult male who was hit as he was crossing the tracks right near burlingame high school. Our reporter alex savidge is actually speaking with caltrain passengers who have been, you know, severely delayed, as you might imagine, between millbrae and san mateo. There is a bus bridge between both directions. And the trains are only going down to millbrae or up to san mateo and then turning around. So there is no service between millbrae and san mateo. It is a bus bridge causing major delays. We will have more on this coming up from our reporter who is speaking with passengers. Police and fire investigators are back at a vallejo home where a fiveyearold boy tragically died in a weekend fire. Its the second day of their investigation. It is. And fox 2s christian kafton has been there since early this morning. Officials want to know if the fire was deliberately set. Reporter if you take a look, you can see that there are a lot of investigators here that have been coming and going. The specially trained k9s are trained to sniff out accelerants, going in and out of that home this morning. That fire claimed the life of a fiveyearold boy. Investigators looking to see if it was set on purpose. There were moments of heroism through this fire. A man tried to save that boy. Neighbors called 911 after the mother who lived in the home rushed out of the home and said her child was trapped inside. All that happened around 10 00 yesterday morning. The mother of that fiveyear old and her teenage son made it out of the home alive, but the fiveyearold boy never made it out of a back bedroom. Neighbors rushed into the home. One neighbor telling us this morning her son tried to get inside but injured himself. Another man managed to crawl inside the home and spray it down with a hose, but still he could not save that little boy. There was a hose outside the porch. I turned the hose on. Hosed her off real good. Asked her where the baby was. I could only get halfway through the living room, you know. Between the smoke and the heat, i just you know, i tried to hold my breath and go for it and i couldnt. Reporter a lot of neighbors trying their best to get inside that home but it was too late by the time fire crews got inside the home. The mother suffered second and thirddegree burns and was flown to the burn center at uc davis medical center. Today investigators here with that specially trained dog that can sniff for signs of arson. The neighbor did the mother told neighbors that her husband and she had an argument before that fire broke out. Investigators looking to see if there is any connection between that dispute and the fire that broke out here yesterday morning. Again looking at this fire scene you can see that investigators are here. Again, guys, we told you all morning long we have been pushed back a number of times to accommodate more investigative vehicles. Vallejo fire and police are on scene at this fire. The trial for a man accused of killing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar four years ago is supposed to start. There have been a lot of delays and there may be more. Ktvu fox 2s janine de la vega is there to tell us what is expected to happen in court. Good morning. Reporter good morning, dave. Yeah, there is a lot of speculation that this trial may be delayed again. Family of sierra lamar has sort of learned not to get their hopes up because it has been pushed back before. It appears that the suspect Antolin Garcia torres, he has been frustrated with his Defense Attorneys because he recently asked for new ones. His public defenders had told the court that they needed more time because they were busy working on other unrelated cases. But Garcia Torres reportedly withdrew that request for new attorneys. So now its going to be up to the judge to decide whether to degree to delay the trial again or to go forward. Garcia torres has been sitting in jail since his arrest in 2012. Prosecutors say they are ready for trial. The District Attorneys Office says it has dna evidence from Garcia Torres car and sierras clothing links him to her. Volunteers have held hundreds of organized searches, but the 15yearolds body has never been found. Those volunteers have shown up to court before for proceedings, but they may again today. The trial has a lot of public interest. This is a teenager that vanished. The suspect has been behind bars for more than four years. The family really has been waiting for closure for a long time. This hearing starts at 9 00 a. M. Janine, are you getting any sense that family of sierra lamar might be attending this Court Appearance as they have so many previous to this . Reporter you know, they werent showing up for proceedings in the past. They said they wanted to wait until the trial got started. So, yeah, it is possible that they could show up. They are probably listening to what the d. A. s office is telling them as far as whats gonna happen today. But when the trial actually does get underway, they do plan on being here. Thats what we have been told. Thank you. Time is 8 08. This just came in. Baltimore Police Officer edward nero has just been acquitted of assault and other charges in the arrest of freddie gray. Freddie gray died after being injured in police custody. Officer nero was one of six Police Officers charged. You see him here in file video. Prosecutors say nero unlawfully arrested freddie gray and that he was negligent by putting him in the back of a police van with no seatbelts. According to an autopsy, gray died from a spinal injury after his arrest. Neros lawyers said he did not arrest gray and that it was the van drivers responsibility to buckle in freddie gray. Again officer nero, one of the Baltimore Police officers in the freddie gray case, has just been acquitted of charges. We will have more on this story a little bit later. Time is 8 09. The chp is searching for the person who fired shots on interstate 580 in richmond last night. This happened after 5 30 in the westbound lanes of the freeway near am regatta boulevard. Investigators are also searching for any possible victims. There have been several shootings on bay area freeways in the past few months and police tell us they think some of them are gang related. Anyone with information is asked to call the chp. Your time is 8 09. Police in sausalito arrested a paroleee seen prowling around a neighborhood looking into homes and knocking on doors. Police were called about a suspicious person Walking Around crescent avenue between main street and sausalito boulevard. They say 28yearold derek oliver was arrested. He was already on parole for burglary and was about to be sentenced for two other burglaries last year in napa county. Well, tomorrow night the Golden State Warriors hope to continue their trend of bouncing back from a loss. Yesterday they were blown out by the Oklahoma City thunder. That was game three last night. The egyptair flight crashed in the Mediterranean Sea last thursday with 66 people on board. At this point investigators still dont know why that plane went down. The crash has raised new concerns about Airport Security overseas and here at home. Some of these lanes are beginning to clearing out and hopefully soon we will see less of a backup at getting into San Francisco. As we look at the east bay, we see a lot of slow traffic here on 80 westbound. All of a sudden it fill filled in from hercules. 24 is a little bit slow and 680 is slow from concord into the alamo area. Its not unusual. It took a while to fill in the east bay. 8 16. Just ahead who the chief, Toney Chaplin, met with yesterday and their response to his efforts. Plus major delays this morning for caltrain commuters on the peninsula after a person was struck and killed by a train a couple hours ago. We want to take you back to the breaking news in burlingame where man was hit and killed by a caltrain. There are major delays as a result this morning. Alex savidge is at the burlingame station where buses are helping get people where they need to go this morning. Alex. Reporter yeah. And crews are making some progress getting the tracks re opened. The tracks had been shut down he entirely as a result of what happened where this man was hit and killed. It happened north of the burlingame station where we are this morning. A few hundred yards up there. Crews are still working in that area right now trying to get the tracks reopened. But we do understand that caltrain Just Announced that trains will be coming through here on single track. They will be coming through on the southbound track at a very slow rate. But they are getting some trains through this area right now. So still commuters should expect delays up to an hour and a half this morning as a result of what happened. After 6 30 this morning a man was struck and killed by a northbound 305 train. He was hit just south of the oak grove avenue crossing in what San Mateo County sheriffs officials describe as an intentional act. Now, this was the sixth time a person has been hit and killed by a caltrain so far this year. And as authorities investigated the circumstances of what happened here, all trains were initially stopped in this area and a bus bridge wag set up to get people where they need to go. That set up between the burlingame station and the millbrae station. I talked with commuters this morning. They say they knew something was wrong when they showed up at the station. We just appear to be stopped here. Doesnt look like caltrain is moving in either direction. They have announced caltrains announced a bus bridge between here and millbrae for people who want to connect with bart. But we are not quite sure where the bus is going to show up. Reporter and initially there was a little bit of confusion on the part of mean commuters at the burlingame station trying to figure out where to catch that bus. The update we have from caltrain is that the bus bridge has been canceled and now there are trains running on a single track through this area and going at a very slow rate. Going about 15 Miles Per Hour through this area, and that will be the case until they get both sides of this track here cleared just north of the burlingame station. Its unclear, sal, exactly how long that will take. Meantime, trains running slowly. Any thoughts on alternate routes or alternate ways to get around this . One of the things that i have noticed, alex, more people are using highway 101. That indeed may be one of the reasons we are seeing more slow traffic. I just found about an accident that was reported at 8 27. So about five minutes ago. Southbound 101 just before caesar chavez. It likes its a hitandrun crash. Fortunately for the man or the whom was hit, they got the full license plate of the person who hit them. Final little we have that. That car is pulled off to the side. You can see 101 is heavy. It was heavy even before the crash, which leads me to believe that caltrain people are using their cars. This is an injury accident in san jose. Southbound 280 before 11th. You can see a couple of fire trucks there blocking the two right lanes. And traffic is backing up southbound in san jose. Again southbound 280. And we look at the east bay commute. Traffic is going to be still very busy on 880, 24 and 680. Now todays weather. We have a mix of sun and clouds this morning so far. If you get the sun, its not bad. If you have the cloud cover, then we are on the cool side even with the sun. Its not that warm. A lot of 40s this morning. 50s now. We are slow to recover here. There is another system dropping in on the west coast. It has produced light rain on the mendocino coast maybe a little bit in labeling county. Lake county. I think thats a sign of things to come here a little later. The system right there will continue to rotate. There are some breaks off the coast. We have some breaks parts of Sonoma County, northern marin a little bit. Most locations have partly cloudy to mostly cloudy conditions and the low, there will be another one behind that. That will keep cloud cover and cool conditions. 50s on the temps. Look for mostly cloudy to partly sunny conditions through the day. I think we go mostly cloudy later. There is one system. More clouds this afternoon. 60s and 70s. We are learning about the death of keith green. The millbrae father whose body was found a week ago in Sonoma County. Police raided a home Early Saturday Morning and arrested tiffany lee, green ex girlfriend. He was reported missing and then a hiker found his cell phone the next day. His body was found along the Sonoma County freeway may 11. A jail official tells ktvu tiffany lees current boyfriend has been arrested also in connection with greens death. He is expected to be charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. 8 25. San franciscos new acting police chief Toney Chaplin is trying to rebuild Community Trust in the Police Department. Yesterday he met with the Third Baptist Church members and said communication, thats the First Step Towards building trust. Church members say relations between the Police Department and people who live in the city has been strained after several deadly officerinvolved shootings. The chaplin says changes could come quick. That could include getting rid of some officers. The officers do what they are supposed to do. Some get it sooner or later. Those of the ones we can train them and some never get it. Those are the ones we want to sent to the commission with the recommendation that they be separated from the Police Department. The people we talked to say if chaplin is not the police chief, they want to help who is chosen. Firefighters are battling a wildfire. This is a picture posted by calfire to twitter. The fire quickly spread to nearly 4,000 acres in just a few hours. At this point the fire is 20 contained. No reports of any injuries or any homes being threatened. Closer to home the chp says all lanes of westbound 580 are back open this morning after a car fire that started last night along 580 and flynn road north. The flames spread to nearby brush, and firefighters were called in. It burned through ten acres but no one was hurt. An alumnus of san jose state is among five people who collapsed and died in the philippines during the Music Festival. The american is 33yearold eric miller. He is here on his linkedin page. He graduated from san jose state in 2005, moved to the philippines where he worked adds an account executive. He was at the concert billed as the summers biggest raven party in a suburb of manila over the weekend when he and four other people at that concert collapsed. President obama now in vietnam has lifted a ban on selling weapons to vietnam. He made the announcement during his three day visit to that country. The United States is fully lifting the ban on the sale of military equipment to vietnam that has been in place for some 50 years. Sales will need to still meet strict requirements, including those related to human rights. Today is the deadline for californians to register to vote for the june 7th president ial primary. Supporters of bern are suing. They want to extend that deadline to election day. The lawsuit plains there is a lot of con fusion about californias president ial primary rules especially for voters registered adds no party preference. The Sanders Campaign claims many voters dont know they can request a democratic ballot and if they dont they will get a primary ballot with no president ial candidates. One sanders supporter wants a bigger Public Awareness campaign. We see a lot of people who have got their vote by mail ballot and they dont have bernie on it because there are no party preferences. Now, the secretary of state says he hasnt seen the lawsuit yet but his office has posted information online, in press releases and on social media. He says the call to extend the registration deadline to election day is not realistic. In the election next month San Francisco voters could change who gets to decide Housing Development rules. Right now voters get the final say on how much new housing is required to be affordable. The rate is currently 12 of new development, but prop c would increase that to 25 . If would give the power back to the board of supervisors to change the rate depending on market conditions. Its the latest proposal designed to deal with the lack of homes in the city for low income residents. Prop c would include Housing Options for nurses and teachers. Peninsula and south bay cities are scrambling to approve funding for a project. The creek employees from the Santa Cruz Mountains nat San Francisco bay but it can be prone to flooding during king tides and big storms and 100 years of sediments has narrowed the creeks considerably. Removing the sediment would cost more than 40 million. Almost three Million Dollars more than what was originally estimated. If cities do not approve the funding by mid june the project could be set back for several months. 8 41. Researchers want to know why so many whales are being spotted in the bay. The chronicle reports a Record Number of sightings like that that researchers docked along the embarcadero, they have counted between 30 and 60 humpbacks per day. They say they have had been ten blue whale sightings in the past week. The chronicle reports they think its because the whales are hungry. They are following their prey. New this morning two suicide bombers in yemen killed at least 45 people. Officials say two bombers targeted young men who wanted to join the army in the Southern City of aiden. A suicide car bomber targeted a line of men that were outside an Army Recruitment center while a second bomber on foot set off his bombs among a group of recruits. New safety concerns about Mount Everest after another person died on the worlds tallest mountain. The third death there since friday. The latest happened saturday. A man from india was climbing down from the summit. He died the next day from exhaustion. Weve also learned that two other climbers are missing. Now, this comes days after an australian woman and a man from the netherlands died from altitude sickness near the peak of Mount Everest. Officials say some of the companies that have poor quality equipment, they are exposing their clients to risk. They also say some of the clients just arent the climbers arent prepared to climb mt. Everest. Back at home, police in burlingame are warning hikers be on alert after two women and their dogs had to be rescued from an aggressive coyote. The women were inside mills canyon park yesterday morning when that coyote cornered them. Police say the coyote made have been protecting its pups from the two dogs. Police were able to scare the coyote off. They escorted the hikers out of the park. Police are reminding everybody pets should be fed indoors and when they go out on a walk they should be on a leash. Also in the east bay westbound 580 near isabelle they are clearing an accident there. Bay bridge is clearing out finally with a little bit of slow traffic, but 80 west is still slow in pockets from richmond to berkeley. 8 48. Lets go to steve. A classaction lawsuit and now a new study that claims fitbits popular heart Rate Trackers are highly inaccurate. Researchers at cal poly pomona put fitbits pure pulse heart rate monsters around charge hr bands on each wrist. Then the participants were hooked up to an ekg machine that records the hearts rhythms. That report was compared to the readings on the fitbit bands and the results showed the fitbits miss calculated the heart rates by up to 20 beats per minute during rest, moderate, and more rigorous exercise. That study was commissioned by the law firm behind the Class Action Lawsuit against three fitbit models that use the pure pulse heart monitor. Now, fitbit has responded to the study. They responded calling it biased and basils. They say it was paid for by lawyers suing fitbit and was conducted a consumer electrocardiogram. Time is 8 52.
