Left in the year. I was saying, so that means its about 100 days to christmas, right . There you go. Exactly. If case youre wondering 19 years ago going the was registered. I was folking poking around this day in history. We have a busy newscast. Welcome. We begin with the developments enter the story of Jasmine Abuslin. She is the woman we used to know as celeste guap who is the center of the bay areas Police Sex Scandal. Yesterday jasmine and her attorneys held a News Conference in the state of florida. Her attorneys say jazz minute is ready to reclaim her true identity and is headed home to the bay area. Later this morning another press conference is expected to be held in oakland. Ktvu crime ronner henry lee has been following the story and its most recent developments. The wide ranging scandal now involvements officers from a number of departments. Henry lee has more on whats next. Children who are. Reporter 19yearold Jasmine Abuslin stood silently as her attorney held a News Conference in florida and said her client is shedding the name celeste guap and going home. Celeste guap is dead. We are happy to say that celeste guap is dead. We go home. We love florida. Its been nice. But were going home. Reporter the selfdescribed call girl had been in rehab in florida for just three days when she was arrested for biting a Security Guard at the facility. On wednesday, she pleaded no coast to misdemeanor battery and wrote a ler of apology to the victim. She signed court papers with her name, a smiley face and hearts. With her criminal case over, abuslin can now return home to the bay area. The d. A. Is waiting for abuslin to come back before formally filing charges against Bay Area Police officers. Price says her client has been victimized from officers from seven Law Enforcement agencies. Agencies. I can tell you as we return, we intend to hold everyone accountable. Reporter price says her client should not be in drug rehab. She is not a drug addict. She is a child, victim of sexual straw ma and child sex trafficking. Reporter the Attorney SaysRichmond Police helped bring abuslin to florida under false pretenses. She is a witness to criminal activity, a criminal conspiracy in the bay area. There is no reason or rhyme at all for why she is here in stewart, florida. Reporter abuslin plans to go back to school and become a veterinarian. Whether or not somebody gave her a dollar or a dime is ir rel arent. The fact that she is alive today is a miracle. Joining us now is henry lee in studio here. The story has so many different angles. Is she back in the bay area yet . We think she is back in the bay area. She may or may not appear today. Were not sure. Any word from the District Attorneys Office as to when exactly these officers will be officially charged now that if she is on her way back . I did ask that question, they are not giving us a time frame. They will tell us when they formally file the charges against officers involved in allegedly charges. One of the big parts of the story is why did she go to florida do do her rehab. Everybody not everybody, a lot of people want to know how did that transpire and if someone is someone going to be blamed for this. Some people are blaming the Richmond Police and in some parts the d. A. s office for getting the paperwork started for jasmine to go to florida. Now were getting conflicting information, pamela price, her attorney, said theres no reason for her to have been out of state. She said it was witness tampering. Right. Police are saying we have no control over where rehab candidates go. So still unanswered questions. Lets look ahead and see if police the Police Officers who have lost their jobs or may lose their jobs, can they go to another department, lets say i am in locoed can i go to berkeley . Its tough. If youre not criminally charged then there are background checks to see what untoward behavior might preclude you from employment elsewhere. Did her attorneys talk at all about the possibility of lawsuits against the different Law Enforcement agencies . Absolutely. Pamela price is a pretty well known oakland civil rights attorney. Litigation is possible against the officers. All the chief thats have been that have come and gone in oakland in the last few months, is this all somehow related to that . Yes. The the allegations against chief sean went was he did not properly have this entire incident investigated after the suicide of that one officer last year. That became a domino effect for other people. They came in toen top cop to leave days later. The California Attorney general will get involved at all and launch an investigation possibly to find out the real answer if theres so much pinger pointing we dont note the actual facts. There have been calls for her to step in. Her office is monitoring the existing investigation. Lets look ahead. Later today, later this morning we expect to hear a News Conference. We dont know if jasmine will speak or not. She didnt speak yesterday. She did not. She did appear with her father. The father did not speak as well. Her attorney will be there and perhaps another attorney Charles Bonner who was in florida yesterday. So they will lash out once again at the bay area Law Enforcement agencies. Theres so many attorneys involved. I want to know if that officer hadnt committed suicide, do you remember how this all started, do you think any of this comes to light . Well, whats interesting, sal, is even after his suicide occurred, a lot of this didnt come out into the public anyway. So the question remains what did the city and Police Department know and when did they know it. Were they hiding anyone . The federal monitor is upset it didnt come to the attention earlier. Well have update coming up at noon. Our cover continues at 9 20 for the type of recovery jasmine will now need. How this case can hurt or help other victims. Democratic president ial nominee Hillary Clinton returns to the campaign trail today. Clinton will speak at a rally in the battleground state of north carolina. She took a number of days off to recover from pneumonia after she slumped into the arms of her aids while lesion a memorial event. Her doctor says clinton is recovering well with antibiotics and rest. Meanwhile right here on ktvu at 1 00 this arch. Donald trump will appear on the dr. Oz show, one of the topics is the health of the 70yearold trump. If your health is as strong as it seems from your review of symptoms, why not share your medical records . Why not well i have no problem in doing it. I have it right here. I mean should i do it . I dont care. [ applause ]. Trump then pulled out of his pocket a physical exam or copy of a he handed it to dr. Oz who quickly glanced over the information and said that Trumps Health looks good for a man of his age. Audience members talked about the interview. He said he would like to lose maybe 15 or 20 pounds, but that was the only thing that in his Health Report that was and hes any kind of issue at all. A couple of people who were in the audience said that trump announced his current weight as 236 pounds. He joked that his hand movements at rallies have turned into a form ever exercise. He would be the oldest first term president just ahead of ronald reagan. The full interview will air today at 1 00. Donald trump also discusses other tommics on the show including national security. In michigan yesterday trump was speaking at an africanamerican church when he was interrupted by the pastor as he began to attack Hillary Clinton. Hillary failed on the economy. Just lick shes failed on foreign policy. Everything she touched didnt work out. Nothing. Now Hillary Clinton mr. Trump i invited you here to thank us okay. Okay. And there were also protesters outside the church chanting trump go home. Both candidates have been trying to woo middle class voters but who does that include. Which leads to our question of the day. How do you define middle class here in the area. Is it being able to take a trip every year . I think the Median Income is 57,000. A lot of people say that is not enough to live here in the bay area. Saving not just survivor, contributing to 401 k , investments, savings, instead of hoping, you have enough for your monthly expenses. And gary says, simply in the bay area, its keeping your head above water, barely. And another twitter user says middle class is now the new poor because we dont equal foy to receive help from the governments. All the money we spend is out of our pockets, so were left with nothing to spend which can be properties or nice vacation like the rich do. A lot of people talking about this on the ktvu facebook page, on twitter as well using that hashtag, well keep talking about it as well and have your responses coming up. Coming up next, could you ditch your smartphone, tablet and other devices . One family actually is doing it. Coming up at why they say the Digital Detox was needed. Were live outside of at t park where boy if the giants are go going to make the play offs, they need to make a run and do it soon. Well talk about the series against the giants that begins later tonight. Indulge moisturedeprived hairwhole blends by garnier. Nourishing haircare. Infused with Avocado Oil Shea Butter extracts. Restores and moisturizes for naturallybeautiful, nourished hair. Garnier whole blends Avocado Oil Shea Butter. We dance on the salsa team together, and its like a lot of power in what we wear. When were practicing if i dont feel good in what im wearing i dont look good. T. J. Maxx has that variety. I can get a lot for my money. Its like yay t. J. Maxx if youre feeling it, just go for it, dont wait. Maxx life at t. J. Maxx. Well this is what we like to see. Dow jones is up. By almost is 40 points. S l also strong. Nasdaq gaining more than 1 . Nice start to the market. It is crunch time for the giants. Theyre down to the last 17 regular season games. If they want to play in the post season they have to bounce back after they want swept by the padres. Tonight the giants begin a big series with the cardinals. Brian is joining us outside at t park with lou the ball team is hoping to move forward. I win would be nice. Reporter a win would be nice. I know that you and sal are going to be up late. Were live outside here at t park. Beautiful at t park this morning where, yeah, it is a pretty much a mustwin from here on how the for the giants. Every game pretty much counts. They begin a series against the cardinals later on tonight. But look, if history can play any role in this, they were pretty much in the same boat two years ago, and look what happened. They won the world series against the royals but this series begins at 7 15 tonight. And this is typically the time where the giants would get hot as we mentioned though every game counts. But yeah they got swept by the padres yesterday losing 31. Bumgarner got the loss. They have they have not gotten the key hits and shut down innings from the bullpen. The manager knows this. The giants faithful know this. We spoke with a fan who runs by at t park every day and we asked him as a fan if hes worried that the team is not going to make the playoffs . Were all worried. Im sure bow committee is worried. So all the fans all the people in the bay area, all the giants need to get together and rely on each other to try to win. Something has to click, something is missing. Im not sure what it is. The pip offing lets not go there. Pitching, lets not go there. Its not gelling. Theyre rolling over. Reporter she went there in terms of the pitching. But as we take a look at the standings, the giants are five games behind the dodgers. Theyre in good shape, theyre holding on to the top wild card spot. It is so important when they play the cardinals in this next fourgame series that they win these games out. It looks good for the giants at least in terms of travel. Theyre not going too far. As we take it back out here live near at t park, they play the series against the cardinals later on. They play in los angeles against the dodgers, then in san diego, hopefully theyll have a better outcome when they play in san diego. Thats on the 22nd through the 25th. Then they got the next series of home games, they play the rockies on the 27 am. Then they play the tongers again at the end of the month. I did check the car caves again, on this very date back in 2014, guys, they were four games out of the division. So hopefully things will turn around. Really quickly before i let you go, i want to Say Something real quick if i can take just a quick note. My photographer, come out here sid. This is one of the last times probably going to be working with him. He is a huge giants fan. Listen, ive gone to war back with him, i had good times and bad times. Im going to miss this guy incredibly. True professional. Youre going to missed. And no criticism from me for anything ever. And thats saying a lot. Reporter thats saying a lot coming from sid. I know im taking a lot of time. But im going to miss this guy quite a bit. Im going to miss all you guys as well. I still have one more day. You guys are a great team. We appreciate all your work. Mean wheel the a as continuing their little hot streak in the kansas city. They beat the rye yoms for Third Straight game. They went on to win 80. Was drafted by the royals before trading to the as. Two years later, he got the win against his his old club. Just going back to the giants real quick, Adam Wain Wright taking on cueto tonight. This series, and hopefully the crowd will come out, it will be electrifying. I know the teams relies on the fans. You know, in 2010, 2012 and 2014 and none of those years in none of those years was a team favored to win it all. They were not. They were underdogs all the time. Right. And definitely if they get into the playoffs theyll be considered underdogs because theyre bullpen hasnt been, you know, performing well. But they have a chance. Just think about how much the teaches team has changed the word misfits was used a million times, long hair contracting elly looking guys that happened to make it so the team has changed so much since then. Lets hope they can catch fire. Lets do it. Coming up next, changes to how Police Shootings in San Francisco are handled. Still to come, the department that will now be responsible for investigating what happened and the people involved. And 10,000 stole front a local church. The person of interest, police are now looking for. Well continue our coverage. The young woman at the center of a Police Sex Scandal is heading back here to the bay area. Later this morning Jasmine Abuslins attorneys will hold a press conference in oakland what kind of services will she need help, and what could this case do to victims in similar situations. Joining us now we welcome back sherry. Sherry thanks for joining us. We have the first talk about the fact that we knew her as celeste guap. Shes changed her name, her appearance is somewhat more demur, if you will. How do you read what we heard and saw yesterday . Im very appreciative that these lawyers from the bay area have actually stepped up and gone to advocate on her behalf. I think its tremendously important that there are, you know i mean, part of the reason why this has even happened is because there hasnt been any adults in her life that are really looking out for her to protect her, right . So you think about it like shes been through, you know, Law Enforcement, prosecutors office, the media and nobody has even stopped to refer her to the many antitrafficing agencies in the bay area where she could get help. At this point im grateful she has some what seem to be very competent and compassionate civil rights lawyers who will be advocating on her behalf and hopefully getting her the help and support that she needs through organizations like missy, west coast childrens clinic, where they provide Trauma Informed Services for somebody who like is a left who has been celest. Her attorney said something that stood out. She said celeste guap is dead. Jasmine is glad to be free and wants to come home. Jasmine is going to get a second chance. Is celeste guap dead . I mean how hard is that . Just disappears . Someone is going to move on. I think thats just the way of saying, like, shes theyre ready to move forward with the prosecution and her name is going to come out anyway. Part of the Recovery Process is celeste guap as she, say, 5, 10 years from now is always part of the individual . If youre asking does trauma linger, like, yeah, absolutely. I dont even think this would be a request if you look at i think that Sexual Violence against girls and women is so pervasive that it becomes indivisible. If this was a boy who had been, you know, sexually abused by police since the age of 12, i dont know that this is very widespread information, but she has been initially trafficked starting at the age of 12. Were talking about a seventh grader, okay. So if this were a seventh grade boy would we even be asking like, you know, six years later, like eight years later, is he still going to be like, i mean the reality of the situation, the trauma hasnt ended, right . Shes up until very recently she was still being she was still a victim of. Thats my point. Does it every end . I dont know. I mean, think about the worst thing thats ever happened to you in your life and think about the for most of us, right, like in terms of trauma, like the healing is a lifetime journey. So shes just now bing her journey beginning her journey and will be getting the type of support and Services Human treatment that she deserves. Thats what i want to ask you. After all of this is over and this case fades, how is this woman now worm forearmly girls life going to recover . Is there hope for her to have a normal life after all this and go into a different life . I think a lot of that, you know, depends on the type of love and care and compassion that she receives, right . I think thus far its just been added, you know, insult to injury with the way that shes been treated, essentially like a disposable human being. I mean even the way frankly the media has covered this, its just been, you see pictures of the Police Officers who are being who are involved in this, they look like they just dropped their kids off at soccer practice. You see pictures of celeste guap, shes been abused and trafficked since the age of 12. I think thats representation is very important. The way we frame the problem is oftentimes informs how we frame the solutions as well. I i will say we put what happened during the News Conference up on our facebook page, well over 1,000 comments. Half of them say she is not a victim. She was chasing those Police Officers and now all of a sudden shes turning around and saying, i was victimized. What do you say to those people who think she is not a victim . , you know, i think that the level of brutal at this and inhumanity is pervasive, especially when it comeses to Sexual Violence against women, because, you know, it happens so often, right . Its not just an issue in the bay area, its not just an issue in california. Sexual violence against women is a global issue and i feel like its so ubiquitous in a way that it becomes normalized and the brutal at this becomes invisible. Her Attorney Says the 19 year old wants to help other victims of sexual exploitation. The importance of someone who has gone through it, is that a good thing for the person . I think you know, im in the midst of making a film about this. I write, a film about survivor leadership. I absolutely think that people have lived experience, whether thats in the domestic violence, survivors of, you know, prostate cancer, whatever the situation, if you have lived experience, you have a very particular intimate time of knowledge, right, of that experience. So certainly i think that survivors should be at the forefront of the conversation, at the forefront of the leadership of the antitrafficing movement. I dont think someone who is literally just like a day away from it, you know, that the focus for, you know her right now and my hope is that she does get a referral to missy and to west coast childrens clinic so she can start, you know, the very slow and deliberate process of healing by getting traumainformed therapy and Case Management and help with her education and all of her sort of, you know, stepbystep, her basics. A long road no doubt. Absolutely. Sherry thank you for joining us. Coming up, it is a students dream, no homework. And now its actually a reality for some children in San Francisco. Up next, the reason their plan pal topped this policy. Paul will introduces to a man who uses his history and time on the street to make people laugh. Likes. The report out there saying the Median Income across the United States is 56,000 plus dollars, close to 57,000. So how do you define middle class living right here in the bay area. Thats the question of the day. Natalie mchen lip saying you either struggle or thrive there. There is hardly a middle ground anymore. Middle class is trying to live as frugal as you can and not living beyond your means. Christina says, living middle class is living paycheck to paycheck. Interesting. I guess we asked what here, thats no safety cushion. A lot of people saying 57,000 median nationwide income is nothing here. Sharon writes on my page, middle class in the bay area isnt what it used to be. If you want to be middle class you have to move out. Sad, yes, they might be making in the low six figures. They dont take rich. You move to nebraska, youre rich. Youre paid the same in nebraska. Probably not. You get a new job and wont have a mortgage maybe. We appreciate your con ver safetying can us. Is that conversating with us. Con vo. Con vo. Con vo. Lets again the con vo going. I still see the gray back in. So the fog back for some. Inland temperatures women warm up. Coast and bay are going to say. Most of the coast and over the bay have fog. Midseptember, i know, june, july, august we had fog. I thought september we were supposed to be sunny. It does look better towards saturday, maybe sunday. We have one week left of summer. I think it will be cooler as we head towards the end of it. Lets spend it wisely. This weekend looks nice. It does. For more on some of the other head loins weve been working on lets go to dave clark. Thank you. Here are some of the top stories were following. District Attorneys Office may soon take the lead on investigating all shootings involving city Police Officers. Right now the Police Department investigates shootings itself. But the chronicle reports the city will create a new unit within the d. A. s office to take over those cases. The mayor ed lee approved final funding for this new department. It will come from the Police Reform budget. At least ten deadly Police Shootings are still under investigation. Mean tile, the police meantime, the Police Commission started reviewing applications for candidates for police chief. 60 people have applied from all over the country, ranging from the acting police chief to lieutenants and also consultants. Over the next two months, the Police Commission will name the top three candidates, then mayor ed lee will make the final decision. Well, police in pal tow alto are searching for a thief who stole an estimated 10,000. Investigator believe a man who sat in the back of the church waited for the final Church Service to end and then stole the money that was in collection baskets. That money was intended for maintaining the church, supporting missionaries. And feeding the homeless. Police do have a person of interest. Hes described as being asian, in his late 30s to early 40s, about 56 inches tall, weighing between 130 and 140 pounds. Church members were suspicious of him. He sat in the back of the church and was asking if this was the last service of the day. Those are just some of your Morning Headlines from our newsroom. Mike, sal, ill send it back to you. Dave, thank you. The average adult spends eight hours looking into a screen everything day. Teenagers have almost nine hours of screen time. It is no wonder people want a break from their twices. Youre about to meet devices. Youre about to meet a family going through a Digital Detox. Well learn whether cold turkey is the best way to spur a permanent change. Put that down. Reporter nineyearold brody and 6yearold juliana are spending a lot of time together these days. That wasnt always the case. Proceedy used to spend hours online, mostly gaming, glued to the screen. His mom said she felt like a warden. Five more minutes, it was a constant battle. This constant rift. Reporter it was a real wake up call when she and her discovered brody had been sneaking the ipad in the middle of the night to play minecraft and clash can of clans. We tried different techniques, you know, timers, like app thats were timers that we would install that he would figure how to inun uninstall. It was addicting because you have to collect your stuff and then like in an hour it would all be ready again. Reporter so his parents said no more and locked up every device. Theyve been screenfree since august. The beginning was rough but now its working. We realized this is for real, this is how its going to be, i started seeing brody take out toys that i havent seen in a year. Reporter but digital use experts advise going cold turkey. I think extremes can always be a problem. Whenever anyone sells like im going to go on a die it im going only going to eat carrots, thats going to backfire. Reporter instead of swearing off screens which may not be practical, the best thing parents can do is model judicious mindful use of technology, and while Internet Addiction is not classified as a mental disorder, she says she understands why some consider likes, retweets, Text Messages and emails addicting. There are some studies that show that that little buzz is like a little dopamine hit. Just like gambling provides that eoh, that feels good. Reporter her suggestions for adults include setting up screenfree times and zones. And limiting yourself to checking your phone, say, once an hour. As for the souzas digital detax. I kind of miss screens, actually. Reporter casey says eventually theyll have one computer in a common area. No more disappearing into a bedroom with a tablet for hours. I also want him to, you know, get that those pleasures and those feelgood, you know, neurotransmitters flowing for, you know, hitting a home run or getting an a on a paper. Reporter casey told me she hand app has her whole family back. My sixyearold son said, i wish you werent on your iphone so much. It was like a dagger to my heart. Mom get off your iphone. The thing is and says that mom is on her phone, im texting, im not. You get no credit, right, because he doesnt care what the other mommies and daddies do. So since that dagger to the heart, i have been turning the phone. Whats interesting because of our jobs, you know, its not like im there texting recipes. Your little boy does not care. Im looking up what donald trump said because i feel i need to know. But at a certain point you have to put the phone down. We dont even have a ipad. How long have they been doing it for . Theyve been in it for a movement she likes whats happening so much, shes prolonging, eventually theyll have to come out of it, but she says right now, its great. Its like theyre a 1950s family again. I like it. A San Francisco school is getting rid of homework. Fairmont elementary has joined other schools across the country in adopting a no homework policy for this school year. The principal wants the students to spend more quality time with their families and she says several recent studies have found very few academic benefits tied to homework. The kids were just getting drilled on on manual things, if you will, on rote memorization things, instead of enhancing or expanding their learning. The Unified School District issued a statement, homework is up to each school and teacher. If schools choose to establish schoolwide or norms arrest practices in this area, they may, others its a teacherbyteacher decision. In a break down of this segment two, were hearing from a comedian who grew up in Public Housing, got wrapped up in street life, served time in jail, now hes using the tough lessons he learned to make people laugh. He has within to korea, japan and kuwait as part of the uso tour. He says talking to him now, most people would not know the things he went through growing up. His brother was shot and killed in 2005, and 7 months later, he was shot six times by someone he didnt even know simply for being on the wrong side of town. After a few stint in jail, thompson knew he had to make a change after being arrested in front of his mother, brother, and daughter. I dont care what it is, define what you love to do and do it. That will take you to a whole different space. Thats what standup comedy has done for me. Recently i shot his first ever special. This special is based on his life when he lived in Public Housing in San Francisco, housing that has since been knocked down. That special begins airing online today. For more lets send it over to paul. Im here with hanable. You have to be excited. Today is the big day. Ive been waiting a long time for this. Did you ever think you would make it to this day. You had some tough times in your past. I was when i was in the streets, i didnt even think about this day much. But as i transi can willed out of the streets, i kind of knew it was coming. As long as i put the work this i knew god was going to put me in a position to do whatever i wanted to do. A lot of people blame your past because your parents were there. My mom, my dad, i was never went a week without talking to my mom or dad. It wasnt my parents fault at all. You did it after you graduated. You were an adult. I was an adult. I never been to Juvenile Hall at all. Talk about some of the things that changed your life around. It was weird, because some of the gun violence didnt change me, actually. What changed me is i had a young daughter and i didnt want to put her through something that i didnt go through. My parents didnt dont go through the streets and jail and stuff like that. It wasnt like i was missing them because he he was always there, you know, thats probably i didnt want to put my daughter through that. Its too much against you in the streets. So i had to like figure my life out. You were considering gang injustification. How was that . You said theres no one that wants to be in a gang. Its not like a organized theme. Having people in a gang is probably three fourths of the people are brothers cousins and real family. So its not like this organized thing with cops or anything else portray it to be. Im not making excuses, but its not what it teams. The surprising thing even afternoon you were shot, you were right back out there on the streets. , streets. Yes, sir. In your cast and wheel care. Yes. Shot me again, i dont know what to do. But weve moved beyond that. Yes, sir. Today youre kicking off like i said your special. Its all about your 12 stories, the high rise and your stories yourself. Yes. Give me a little about that. Its a lot im an insult comedian so everything is on my family and situations. I dont get into the political. But 12 stories is a comedy special about like i said my family. Everybody is goofy in my family. So i tell a lot of stories and the comedy special, they come from like the projects were in a house were sitting around a table and im listening to stories theyre telling. Now im bringing them to the stage as i got holder im telling more stories, we all like comedians in our own way in my family. Im really transing stories that we sit around and tell to the stage. Thank you so much. Like you said you went from the streets to the stage. We put more on information where you can watch the special on our website. Look for it in the web links section. You can also find it on your mobile app. Thank you very much. Appreciate talking to you. Thank you. Mike back to you, my friend. Thank you. Coming up next, the nine step curry and Michele Obama on the ellen show. Its being called a demand of cultural change. We introduce you to the director and lead actors from the white guy on the bus. They call you short stack. Half pint. Lil bit. Small fry. Nobody even knows your name. But thats about to change. Time to shine. Orbit. San Francisco Police officer violently attacked by a naked man in the Mission District. New at nine, joining us live. There is a hall of justice with the details of this one. Tara, being told you just got off the phone with police. What are they telling you . Reporter well they said that last friday, this is around 6 00 in the morning, they received a report of a partially naked man Walking Around the Mission District with a very large tree branch in his hand. He was throwing it at pedestrians and talking to himself. When the officer arrived, he called for back up. He said he was getting ready to get into a fight and then when he tried to put him into handcuffs thats when things got ugly. Here is the booking photo of 11yearold robert cap lynn of san diego. Now what kaplan reported tried to gouge the officers eye out and was nearly successful. There was a lot of blood according to witnesses. Then kaplan bit the officers face and caused quite a bit of damage to his cheek. It took another three officers to get kaplan under control. He is being charged with felony battery on a peace officer. Felony battery causing serious bodily injury, felony assault with a deadly weapon, felony vandalism aggravated mayhem. All right. Thank you for that report there. Cull tour change and after a successful run on the east coast it is coming here to the bay area. Thats right. Tonight is the preview. Opening night is saturday, september 17th. For more on this were joined by max minute ton, directsor of white guy on the bus and one of the lead actor and Michelle Taylor. Good morning. The play has been described as a genuine slap in the face and the angriest play about race. This we talk about it so delicately i think in real life. This play takes the other view, you can talk about this . Thats right. It makes its point. One of the things weve heard people say is well people dont really talk that much about race, as the play indicates. Well, people like to avoid talking about race. And when they do, its exactly what you said. They walk on egg shells. Theyre very careful. The guy that wrote this, bruce graham, not a careful guy. And he the conversations that he shows you are not the public conversations. Theyre conversation thats go on in private when people are not being so careful and people are not being so when no one is recording them when no one is on video. Its fly on the wall stuff. Michelle, take us this is inner city philadelphia, also the suburbs, what character do you play and a little plot here . Yeah, my character. Shes a africanamerican 26 year old lady and shes a single mom. Shes putting herself through Nursing School and basically just trying to make a better life for her son, you know, hes nine, so she got pregnant really young in high school, but most of the kids in her school did. And so it just kind of it talks about her struggle to try and and take her son to a new, you know give them a better life. And at some point theres an interaction on a bus. There is. Two lives collide. She meets this wealthy white guy on a business suit on a bus as they go through this black neighborhood. Its just like, well why is he here . What is your motive . What do you want . And they become friends. And yeah. But friends, but. What happens at the end of the first act. Thats kind of shocking. You dont have to reveal it. We cant. If you take out all the spoilers, you dont have a lot of play left. Because it is one of those where its like youre reading the script and every actor read the script is like i want to be in this. Because you read the script its like oh my god. Oh no did they really. What you can talk about, though, is being a person who is not white in america, how that feels, and trying to explain that to a person who is white who has never felt that way, you know, its very hard. How do we get there . Does this play help . Theres a brilliant mono rowing that michelle has where she talks about that. White folks never get it. Like i white guy says its true. We dont give a darn. Thats not what i said. Yeah. Thats approximately what he says. It also shows how a wealthy white guy, this guy hes hes a finance air. Wears a suit, right. How hes hes got his hands on all the levers of power. Hes white, hes male, hes rich. And the power that comes with that when its exercised right or wrong can be enormous. And thats what it really comes down to is how those levers wind up affecting her character. Michelle what do you want the audience when they come to balk away learning . You know walk away learning . I thought about that. Because i really want i want people to come first with an open mind and just be ready to kind of question everything that they have ever thought about what its like to be black in america and. Today. Today. Not to interrupt you there. No. Yeah, what its like and to be able to say examine their lives and say, well how can i make a difference and make things a little bit better for people who are not white. I dont know. Theres so much. But i just anticipate questions from lots of friends, you know, and im just ready to have this discussion. When a lot of people go to theater, dinner after or before, if they went to dinner after is this something theyll talk about . Just reading it a few months ago, when the reading was over, people wouldnt leave. It was an hour before people started leaving. We had like 40 people come just hear t people were talking. It turned into a quite a thing. Asking questions, debating. It was interesting, even looking alt our audience, there will be questions that we would postthat the white people pose that white people and black people would have a different response. It raises all of that. This is play people are going to be talk about it and talking about it. White guy on a bus about racial perceptions today. Interesting. Okay.
