Information regarding the arrest of the man accused of this weekends bombings in new york and new jersey. All while investigators are continuing to track his movements before the attacks. 28 yearly ahmad rahami was charged last night with 5 counts of attempted murder of a police officer. He remains in the hospital this morning after being wounded in the leg during a shoot out yesterday morning with police. Forensic investigators say they found his fingerprint on an unexploded device. He was seen on Surveillance Video dropping off a bomb that blew up saturday night in new yorks chelsea neighborhood that injured 29 people. Authorities also linking him to a backpack full of pipe bombs near a new jersey train station. Rahami was born in afghanistan, but grew up in new jersey where his arrest shocked people who know him. I never really thought that this would ever happen because they never really seemed like that type of people. It was a quiet town, but again, no town in america is immune from terrorism anymore. Rahami shot two officers in the gun battle. He reportedly took lengthy trips to pakistan and afghanistan. Investigators are looking into the possibility others may be involved in the bombings. In just about half an hour or so, president obama wrapped up his last address at the un general assembly. We brought part of it live during mornings on 2. President obama called on countries around the world to do more to address the refugee crisis. In the eyes of innocent men and women, and children, who through no fault of their own have had to flee everything that they know. Everything that they love. We have to have the empathy to see ourselves. President obama also said overall he believes the u. S. Has been a force for good in the international community. The investigation into the bombings in new york and new jersey continues, it has raised the issue of profiling and immigration. Republican president ial candidate donald trump said quote, im not using the term muslim. Im saying we will have to start profiling. I dont know if thats bad, but certainly its not a wonderful thing but we have a country to keep safe. His son donald trump jr. Is comparing Syrian Refugees to poisoned skittles with this tweet that reads if i had a bowl of skittles and i told you that just 3 would kill you, would you take a handful. And our director for the council of American Islamic relations, good morning to you. Thank you for taking the time. Thank you for having me. First, your response, donald trump and that comment, im not using the term muslim, im saying we will have to start profiling. This isnt different than what he has been saying the entire campaign trail. He wants to target an entire Community Based on the actions of a few, but of course, you know, we could talk about people who are white supremacists, people who come from different backgrounds and were not saying racially profile anyone. It doesnt work. It hasnt been working and doing it more isnt going to make us safer, it will further divide us as a country . With the arrest of rahami and the attack as well as minnesota, are you warning muslims that they could be harmed in retaliation for these attacks. You know, i still remember personally experiencing family members saying please dont go outside in public, you might be attacked and we hear that regularly from Community Members who say we dont want to send our kids to school. We are worried about women who are visibly muslim. We are warning people to take safety precautions. The sad thing is we have been doing that for a year now. A recently cal state San Bernardino study showed incidents of hate crimes against muslims were up 78 in 2015, the highest they have been since 2001. Is that because were in a political Election Year where things seem to be ramped up on all fronts or how else do you explain that rise. This is much of the rhetoric we are hearing on the campaign trail. Unfortunately, this election cycle has normalized hatred and bigotry in a way that we havent seen in over a decade. People are no longer shy about being hateful, and unfortunately that also, then, translates to violence against individuals and organizations. Is care doing anything, making any public statements, Holding Public walks, anything public to try to get in front of whats happening. We have been doing that. Now, for years. Our record of condemning terrorism predating 911, and anyone that hasnt heard where muslims substantiate on terrorism doesnt know how to use agoing stand on terrorism doesnt know how to use a Google Search engine. We are stronger when we work together. An attack against one of us is an attack against all of us gets out far and wide. Not only to leaders but lay people and Community Members. Have you personally seen the rhetoric affect the way you liver your life orion friends or or your friends or family when you go out places. Do people come up, are they ruder, do you see some of the backlash. One of the most frightening incidents that we experienced in the past year was the attack on the bay area care office. Just a few months ago, someone mailed anthrax to our office knowing that the impact of that would be people having to go to the hospital to get checked out, the entire building having to getting evacuated. Its changed not just the way we live our personal rights but the way we do civil rights work. We increased security, we worry about people staying late by themselves, and thats not unique. People are afraid to go out alone. They worry about going out at night, and muslim organizations across the bay area are constantly thinking about how do we protect ourselves from an attack by a shooter, by an assailant, by someone wanting to put something harmful in the mail targeting us. I will also add quickly its not just people who are muslim being targeted, many people say its because i look muslim, dark skin, hair, full beard. Members of the sikh religion have been targeted but people think theyre targeting someone else. The sad thing is that people who are so ignorant that they would take what they hear and what little they know and translate that into violent action are too dumb to know the difference. I remind members of my community and our friends that the first person killed in a post 911 hate crime was americans, and youre right, people cant tell the difference and that means its more than just muslims being impacted by whats going on. The council on American Islamic relations, thank you for your time this morning. We are joined by joe tuman, ktvu political analyst on the symbolism of terrorism. Lets talk about the investigation going on back east in regards to the bombing that happened in new york, and the arrest that was made in new jersey as well. Motivation, from what we are hearing so far thats been out there. What was the motivation of these bombings. Well, i think only the suspect will know that for sure, but you dont need to be an expert to figure this out. Whats going on in new york right now, you tell me. There is a United Nations conference and what is that dedicated to. Its about the refugee crisis, and why are there refugees from failed states, well, because there are civil wars in places like syria. You have people from lebanon as well, and other countries that are fleeing where there are failed governments. Its in those places that you have this kind of turmoil. A world conference is addressing in issue in one of the most media centric cities on the planet with lots of news media. Its a natural target, trying to drawing attention to it, and to connect the terrorism to the migration or the refugee problem. And to do so in a way that as your previous speaker was noting, feeds a little bit of the islam phobia that we have in this country. The antiislamic sentiment. When theres a backlash in that way. Its connecting this, and you see in the european countries, by the way, that there has been a backlash towards allowing more refugees in because of the fear that people who are coming in might be terrorists. The victims get blamed, and in this case, when these kinds of attacks happen here, theres more of the antiislam sentiment. This stuff feed itself. Its not hard to understand the connection. This guy who has been arrested for since he was a young child. I mean, living here, and so the argument some may say in regards to closing borders and we cant let the terrorists in, but really dont hold up here if indeed hes the individual whos responsible for this. Hes been in america for 20 years. That whole thing is a little bit crazy. When we talk about profiling, we have to be careful about the fact that the very thing that drives someone to be open or receptive to a message from isis or alqaeda is feeling isolated in the civilization or the society they live in. The fact is that since 9 11 we have made people who are muslim feel that way. And thats what makes them susceptible to the messages. Sorry to cut you off. I want to ask you because we have a short amount of time, the difference between the way donald trump responded to this and the way Hillary Clinton responded to this has been made a lot of in media. They both came out with statements but they sound a lot different. Is this going to change the election. In other words, does terrorism bring Donald Trumps numbers up. Yes and no. I think for his own base, they are hearing what they want to hear about the message with respect to islam, and taking a tougher stance on terrorism. But let me also say that mrs. Clinton, i think, is not wrong when she says that his statements like that also drive recruitment for terror groups. And i think most people understand that as well. The main issue in this Campaign Continues to be the economy, not necessarily terrorism. If we have more of these kind of attacks close to election day, it will prime the issue. Before we let you go, saying from washington, an official is saying the bomb suspects dad contacted the fbi in 2014 to say his son was a terrorist, but he later retracted it. If this in fact is the case, we have heard similar cases in which fbi has previous knowledge of someone who might be a problem, essential did nothing, and how do you read this latest bit of news. Having worked with some of the groups, hes probably on several watch lists if thats the case and as evidence for that, ill note he was apprehended within 48 hours. There was a lot of interagency cooperation here but the fact is im sure he was on several federal watch lists as well, which means that while they may not have been able to prevent this, they certainly could identify who might be responsible. But we dont know yet he was under surveillance, if there had been possible interviewing of him before. Theres a middle gray ground. We dont know if that was happening in this case. We dont. But i will say whether its this sort of thing, being on a watch list or monitoring of social media, the nsa for example, our government claims they dont do that, they dont want to violate peoples privacy, but we have the technology to do that, and were more likely to be doing surveillance than catching people and interrogating them. If youre doing surveillance thats when you can catch things before they happen. It is my understanding he had been traveling to the middle east in 2011, had been stopped at airports, questioned and released. More than likely monitored in some way. Thank you so much. Once again, this leads us to our question of the day. This is the first time another idea of racial profiling has come up. It doesnt seem to follow any sort of terror attack at home or abroad. This morning we have been asking you our ktvu question of the day, which is this. Is profiling a security tactic we should consider or a slippery slope that could lead to more problems. The conversation napping on facebook and twitter, one twitter users says never know Law Enforcement to profile nonminorities, profiling leads to unjust treatment of innocents. And on facebook, one viewer told us, its so hypocritical to say that certain races cant live or be here and they must go back to their homelands, considering the fact that this country was ran on immigrants. And on twitter, robert burke said profiling is going to lead to Rights Violations violations and many more problems in our divided nation. Keep checking your responses throughout the morning. We threw out the question of the day which was is profiling a security tactic that the United States should consider using. Michael said on twitter, no, racial profiling is not only unfair but also unnecessary. And counter productive. Sometimes people get hurt or killed as a result. A lot of people talking about this on my Facebook Live page all morning. Most people saying no, they are not for it. Tj wrights one of the worst injustices is someone gets demonized because they look like someone else. And having been racially profiled, i do not support it. It victimized innocent law abiding citizens. Sticks and stones says with the abolishment of the patriot act we are profiled by the terrorists by the nsa. I also have to say that some were upset about us even asking the question, and it was something that donald trump brought up, and so we wanted to ask you, and just a lot of people have definite opinions on the topic. I had one gentleman say yes and left at that. Thank you for your responses. Lets talk about the weather. I see sun behind me. I was, however, sweating to death last night. Trump went onto express support for profiling, saying its necessary to keep the country safe. Hillary clinton says trumps comments are used by terror groups as a recruiting tool. The search for a new police chief in the city continues, ktvus Tara Moriarty joins us live for the hall of justice, and we understand they are finally beginning to get that pool of applicants widdled down. Reporter that is right. According to the San Francisco examiner, there are now eleven candidates in the mix. And among them is acting chief tony chaplain. Now, if we want to talk about this a little bit, we know we have been searching for a chief for quite some time, and there were more than 60 people who applied for the job. The article says that five of the potential chiefs are from within the department, while six are outsiders. And sources in the department tell me that most of the command stuff applied for the jobs, garrett tom, denise schmidt, danny maddox, are all vying for the job. Wednesday issue the Police Commission is set to discuss whether to ask the three finalists if they can make their names public and mayor ed lee will choose from the candidates who is the new chief. Do you know anything about San Francisco politics, you knew rose pak, well known political activist, china town representative, had her hand in a lot of local elections. Reporter earlier this morning the City Attorney issued a subpoena for the founders of the millennium, and we have learned in less than two hours one of the cofounder, Chris Jeffreys is going to be speaking to reporters about what caused the tower to sink and what needs to happen now. They have said the digging on the transbay terminal project next door to the tower is what caused it to sink so much. The transbay joint towers authority has said the tower was sinking long before it broke ground on the terminal. Engineers for the luxury tower on mission and fremont streets anticipated the tower would sink 4 to 6 inches. So far it has sunk 16 inches and projected to sink more than 30 inches. It will be interesting to see what the Millennium Group has to say this morning. Back to you. Tara moriarty live in San Francisco. I cant think if theres been an artist who has gone back to back. First the National Anthem, and now halftime. I was a little skeptical. There was a little debate about gaga, they should have had some bay area flavor, but she was fantastic. Good. Switching to Something Else. Premier week as you know is continuing here on fox with the return of empire right here on ktvu. And season 3 picks up right where season 2 ended with some huge cliff hangers we all want answers to. Joining us this morning is jesse smallet who plays lion on empire. Thank you for joining us this morning. Dont come with me for no cliff hangers. Im not giving any. I remember the end of season 2. Im glad to see youre okay, but jamal was shot. And im curious in season 3, how does jamals character develop . What happens to his character as a response to being shot . Yeah, you know, hes really dealing with some stuff right now. It seems on the surface hes healing okay physically. What we see hes not healing properly emotionally or mentally. Hes dealing with severe ptsd, and i have stage fright sometimes, but at the end of the day, this is severe. This is not stage fright. This is very very serious, and you know, as performing artists thats what we do. We perform. What do you do if the lights, the flashing lightings and the screaming crowd, that freaks you out in such a way, then where does your future stand. You know, youre not able to do the very thing that everyone knows you for, and you know yourself for, what happens, who are you. So hes dealing with this. This is probably the most difficult season for me as an actor. Its forced me to do a lot of research about ptsd and find out things i didnt know. And i actually really pride myself on being knowledgeable about what other people go through. If im being real, i was ignorant to a lot of it. I looked at ptsd as something our women and men in the armed forces deal with, not really recognizing how much civilians deal with it as well. Just from traumatic experiences that happened. Were looking at scenes of the show as we speak to you, and one of the things that has to be a lot of fun about working on a show like this is, you know, the glamour, how everyone is welldressed and a look inside the music business. Did you know a lot about the music business before you did this show . Yeah, i did because ive been an independent artist forever. So i know the ins and outs of, you know, the beauty of music, but also the strange reality that something that to me is one of the most beautiful things in the world is connected to something that can be very very ugly, and that is any sense of business can get ugly. You know, with that said, its very real, you know, its very dramatized, yes, but its very real, and im proud of it. I have asked a lot of people, also, do you think that this is real, and they said yes, its a much prettier version, you know, visually prettier. Everybodys always put together, and everything but its very real. Its very real. I have to say, my mom looks nothing like cookie, my family does not make Music Together but in the end i see a lot of similarities when it comes to the sibling rivalry, the parents friction. In the end its all about family, isnt it . Oh, i love you. I love you. Literally, thats exactly what it is. Thats what ive been trying to get across is that, you know, what, it doesnt matter how big the network is, and how big the show, and how great the music or fashion, or, you know, we have cool guest stars that come on, thats all the backdrop. The true heart of this show is the lion family. This is a show about family. And the things that families go through in any element, and thats why i think that its resonated with the people so much because regardless of race or gender, religion or culture, you know, sexuality, age, whatever, you can identify somehow with these characters because we all are pieces of these characters. She has talked down on you so much last season, i hope that relationship improves in season three between jamal and licious. They will always be a sea saw. They are a sea saw. They go through their up and downs and their wonderful moments of understanding and then their moments of backtracking and really going through it in a horrible way. That right there, for someone like licious and someone like jamal, thats reality. You know, thats very very real, and thats something that, you know, we can all identify with someone in our life. Jesse, i appreciate it. Congratulations on all the success. Look forward season 3. You know im from the bay area. Santa rosa. Im all for you all. Santa rosa baby. My little brother still lives in santa cruz. Love it. Next time youre in town, you pop in and say hi. Youre always welcome. No doubt. Thank you. Empire premiers tomorrow night at 9 00.
