This day, that catch. We cant watch this enough. I dont want to reduce one great man down to one great catch, but our thoughts and hearts are with him today after his revelation yesterday that he is battling als. He says hes going to fight like hell and i hope he can feel the support. Remember when he came on the morning somehow about a year ago . Yes. Everybody was so excited to see the guy. He was as nice as he could be. Hes really a nice guy. I, for one, and all of us wish him really well. I know guys in our sports develop who have covered him for decades, including the first couple ofables, have always spoken highly of him, his passion for football and life and hes a fighter. You know you will get a fight about him. Lets talk about what some other halloffamers have to say about clark. Joe montana had this to say, quote, jennifer and i are saddened by it. This is a difficult time for him. Hes family and in our continual thoughts and prayers. Ronny had this to say, to live with another of my best friends struggling with the disease is devastating. Im asking all of us to not only send their prayers but im asking you to do whatever you can to fight this disease. Dwight will be a champion, which he has been able to show since i met him since the first time he hugged me, and, to this day, moving forward. Alex savage joins us. He fuses a really tough fight. A. L. S. Is a terminal disease, affecting the muscles needed to move and eat and breathe. He says he started to experience the symptoms about a year and a half ago, noticing weakness in his left hand and then he says he started feeling weakness in his right hand, his lower back and election. At this point, clark says he is not able to run or play golf and he can only walk short distances at a time. While its unclear why clark developed als, he said in a statement that was posted online last night, ive been asked in playing football caused this. I dont know for sure, but i certainly suspect it did. And i encourage the Nfl Players Union to work together, and this morning we talked to a local doctor who specialized in brain injuries and concussions. The collision sports like football are much higher risks in terms of possibly producing longterm consequences. Theres a lot of research to be done still and i cant make any statements about an individual player. Certainly a link is being investigated. We want to flash you back to a year ago. I had the amazing opportunity to be able to throw a pass to dwight clark right there. It was a year ago, super bowl city, leading up to the super bowl l coverage and he was kind enough to join us on mornings on 2. You wouldnt have noticed that there was anything going on but he said it was about 18 months ago he started to notice some of the symptoms. You didnt notice it then but now, according to his statement, its really debilitating. Early early this morning you talked with a fan and what struck me is that he was almost speaking about dwight clark in the past tense and im thinking, no, hes here. He can hear this. He can hopefully feel the support. Hes very much here. Yes. I know. I think thats easy for all of us to do, when you hear a diagnosis like this and you know its a disease, where there is no cure, and i think thats an easy trap for all of us to fall into, but you are right, more than ever, now, he needs that positive reaction. I want to bring in our sports director. Mark, its the first time ive spoken to you since the news came out yesterday. Your reaction to the diagnosis . Well, truth be told, guys, i knew about it several months ago and obviously kept that to myself, and so the initial shock that i suffered, and im going to tell you the truth, its really hard for me to talk about. Ive known him for more than 30 years and i dont even think of him so much as a football icon here in the bay area as i do just dwight, the person, and ive spend so much time with him, you know, away from the football field and all of that. He did our postgame show and to see him at various events, its just a real hard thing to talk about, but knowing the kind of guy he is, he handles everything with dignity and class and hell do the same with this and he has so much support around him. The thing i was amazed about with dwight is the way he interacts with people in any circumstance, just handling a crowd or a small gathering clamoring around him and he just always does things with such great and i have no doubt, thats kind of what helped my spirits a bit, is knowing how hell deal with this. Hes truly one of the classiest guys ive ever met and i used to just have the biggest smile on my face watching how everybody would just surround him at a gathering or at a game and, you know, just really want to talk about everything and h his career and he never got tired of it. Hes a wonder of a person. This class of players, from montana to clark and, you know, some of these other players we all grew up watching here in the bay area, have you heard of any other players that are having similar problems because, in this is indeed footballrelated, then, you know, we might start seeing others . I think this is not a big secret either, players who have long crease in the nfl long careers in the nfl, many, just showing things happening later in their lives that could be and very well are related to football and dwight, being the huge name and football icon that he is, could make a very big impact. Unfortunately, a fame like dwight brings a lot more attention to it, which, in the end, and im sure he would agree with this, his objective, along with fighting this, would be, and if you know dwight, i can tell you the first few things out of his month would probably have been, how can i make whats happened to me benefit others and prevent things like this happening to other people, so when you hear dwight say that hes going to spend so much energy in fighting this, part of that comes from an unselfish individual where he means not just himself, but he means how can we make this better for others who are suffering from this. And unfortunately with football, we love it, our sports fans, and partly made our living covering this, its just one of the unfortunate but you cant deny it any longer. It is impacting people in their lives and its a dark side of the court and i think even dwight alluded to the fact, it probably was caused by football, although theres no way to prove that now. Mark, always appreciate you taking the time and thanks for joining us there and i saw a quote from other former individual who played with him, he said, dont be surprised in he changed the course of this disease, too. He was more than just one, but he had a career with others, well. You warned us about this weather last year. Here it is, the first day of spring, waiting for the rain to move in. The clouds will roll in, allock with a pretty good breeze here, but just offshore you can see, theres the first line. This is mainly this afternoon and tonight. Breezy, clouds, and really on the mild say, but rain develops, taking us into tonight and tomorrow, not a lot of this first system but picking up and the Tuesday Morning commute will be a wet one. Go into wednesday, some very cold air actually the coldest we have seen in a while will work in here and that will trigger lower snow levels and pick up the rainfall rate. But the rain tonights tonight and later on tonight, and then tuesday and wednesday, but then a break thursday and a stronger system heading into friday and early next week. Nothing too great on the rainfall, nothing we cant handle. Nothing like january or february. But after friday, after friday, thats when we get pretty good moisture in here and now youre seeing 2. 5, three inch amounts, especially up around santa rosa, and theres our system ramping up on the north close, closer for us, and the main system, that breeze will be a big factor, the higher elevations, as well, a sse wind, so a muggy, tropical feel, but the snow level goes up in the sierra, 7,000 feet, by wednesday, dropping to 5,000, maybe 4500 feet, so get ready. Its on its way and it will take us into the weekend, you guys. The rain pattern has returned. Thank you very much. Right now in washington, d. C. , congressional hearing is underway looking into the allegations of russian interference in the u. S. President ial election and the claim that president barack obama wire tapped trump tower. James comey testified he was asked in theres any evidence to back up President Trumps tweet accusing president barack obama of wire tapping trump tower. With respect to the president s tweets about alleged wire tapping, i have no information that supports the tweets and we have looked carefully inside the fbi. The department of justice asked me to share with you that the answer is the same for the department of justice and all its components. The department has no information that supports those tweets. The tweets by President Trump in question were posted on march 4. Waldman is covering it and joins us live. Joel, when he said that, did that really put, you know, an end to this . Will this keep going on and on . Reporter good morning to you. Its washington, so to answer your question, in short, it will continue to go on for months, if not years, as director comey indicated this investigation could inning from take that long to resolve, but of course here in the nations capital, it is high drama and months of speculation really coming to an end as fbi director comey is testifying on the hill right behind me at this hour, basically answering questions about russias involvement in the 16 election as well as the Trump Campaign ties, if any, to moscow. In testimony this morning, the nations top Law Enforcement officer laying out evidence the u. S. Gathered into russias attempts to influence the election. The physician, as part of our Counter Intelligence mission is investigating the russian governments efforts to interfere in the 2016 president ial election. Lawmakers wanting to know what the bureau discovered about possible ties between the Trump Campaign and members of the russian government. If the Trump Campaign or anybody associated with it aided or abetted the russians, it would not only be a serious crime but it would also represent one of the most shocking betrayals of democracy in history. Democrats and republicans zeroed in, as well. Its still possible that other surveillance activities were used. Since leveling the action two weeks ago, the president suffered backlash from even some republicans who says trump needs to either back up the claim or apologize to former president barack obama. And even before the hearings began today, as one might suspect, trump firing off a series of tweets basically saying the democrats made up this entire russia story and pushed it as fake news. Thank you very much. Coming up next here on mornings on 2, the Supreme Court has had a vacancy for more than a year and President Trumps pick to replace is in the hot seat. A former clerk for scalia joins us live in the studio to talk about todays hearing. The Senate Judiciary hearing for neil gorsuch is underway. Hes appointment would determine whether the court will have a conservative majority. Democrats say they are going to block it, perhaps 51 votes, not 60 to be needed. As the hearing is happening, were happy to bring in the litigation partner at San Francisco based firm and former clerk to scalia. Thank you very much for being here. Well start with today. The opposition to neil gorsuch, is it because of who he is and what hes done or because hes not their choice . The main reason for the opposition, i think, is that there was failure to hold hearings for president Barack Obamas nominee, and i think thats the main thing, a feeling that because that is felt to be unfair. Its felts that they need to pose this nomination on principle. I dont think it has much to do with judge Neil Gorsuchs quality indications nor do with it it be, you didnt vote with the other, so we wont consider you. I think theyll get into the merits. The democrats that have spoken out have spoken on particular issues that they feel judge neil gorsuch is what are the issues . Some have been raised that might be viewed as controversial are on the freedom of religion. Im not saying i agree with these views but people have said hes extreme conservative on freedom of religion, certain separation of power issues, on Administrative Law issue. Saying that, do you feel, based on your year clerking for scalia, does he have a scalia like legal philosophy . I would say yes. I spoke on a Panel Last Week about him and i think one of the main things he shares with Justice Scalia is a commitment to separation of powers and a vision of how our contusion operates. They each have their role, the three, and that is clearly shared by neil gorsuch. Negotiate will call him a judicial activists . Right. It doesnt mean the justice sits back and does nothing. The justice may see a law in violation of the contusion and, you know, the particular amendments or provisions of the contusion that are enumerated in the actual text of the contusion. The other things he shares with scalia is textualism. Do you foresee neil gorsuchbecoming the leader down the road, that neil gorsuch would be the leader of a majority conservative court . Its hard to say always to predict how somebody is going to be on the court, how they will get along with the other justices. Scalia got along well with his colleagues, including his more liberal colleagues, but from all accounts, there been numerous letters submitted on behalf of judge gorsuch, from a wide range of political spectrum, and uniformly, what you hear from people that know him well, i that hes collegial, williesen to anybodys view, very open minded, very humble, and those are good qualities one will serve him well on getting along with people on the court. Thank you very much for joining us. On thursday, the house is set to vote on the plan to repeal the affordable healthcare act. House speaker ryan says hes open to making changes on the healthcare bill to provide more help to older people. We asked, how do you think President Trump is doing . Better . About what you expected . Or worse . We take a look at the poll results. It looks like 48 say hes performing worse than expected. 30 , better than expected. 22 , about what i expected. Heres a couple of the responses on twitter. Potus is doing worse than expected, cutting funds for arts and seniors, yet he can go golfing every weekend. One says, he still doesnt have his cabinet together. Well keep taking your responses. Coming up here on mornings on 2, the happiest countries in the world. Coming up, why the top nation was singlinged out. The proposed law that will help people with expensive parking tickets. Not a lot of Major Movement to report on stocks, the dow jones is up, and the s p, as you see. A state lawmaker wants to make it possible for all to pay off tickets, proposing a payment plan. Cities are increasing their parking spots as a way to raise money, making it difficult for low income drivers to pay the money they owe, leading them to losing their car and more, making it hard for them to get to court. A group of atv and dirt bike drivers were chased down seeing driving erratically on the bridge, in the eastbound direction, about 6 00 last night. Officers cat up to them near 103rd avenue in oakland and arrested a woman and detained several other people. A viewer posted this video on our Facebook Page yesterday and shows several motorcyclists and atvs doing wheelies in the westbound direction. An officer is seen pulling behind the group but its unclear if they were able to stop the riders. No word on whether this inside involved the game group detained in the city of oakland. Two more people were arrested for security threats at the white house over the weekend. Saturday afternoon a man jumped over a bike rack, but was tackled by secret service before he could make it over the fence on the ground. Saturday night another man tried to drive a stolen car past the security check. Last week a man from the bay area scaled the white house fence and was on the grounds for 16 minutes before secret Service Agents discovered him. The idea that somebody could jump a fence at the white house and be on the grounds for upwards of 15plus minutes, be right up against the building, hide behind the builder and jiggle the door, that can never, ever happen, and yet it happened again. President trump was at the white house during last weeks Security Breach but he was not there during these incidents that happened over the weekend. Youtube said they regret any conguytion about the restricted mode. The issue came up after complaints they were hiding videos with lgbt content. Living in the bay area is not cheap, as you know, but how much would you need to pack up your bags and leave . Coming up, a Silicon Valley company has an offer for employees. Never, hopefully. Interesting. Are you kidding me . I would be open to the idea. Checking the responses to the ktvu question of the day. Today marks two months since the president took office. We asked the viewers how they think hes doing. Lets go ahead and pop up the poll results on twitter, very active poll. We see numbers similar to what we shared at the beginning. 48 , and theres a number of people saying, i wanted to highlight the lone voice who writes, trump is doing great, exclamation point. Were getting that. I have somebody supporting the president. One, as expected doing an excellent job. Its too bad fake news makes his job harder but i would obviously have people who say i dont think hes doing as well as expected. Thank you very much for talking with us. The poll will be going through out the day and all day long on twitter. 9 31 parents in San Francisco are nervous, waiting for letters that tell them which Public Schools their child will go to, our children would go to in the fall. The School District says there was a delay mailing out the important letters. We are in San Francisco where they just heard from the School District. Reporter the School District says the delay was because of a staffing emergency on friday. Friday is when San Francisco unified School District was supposed to send out letters to families to let them know which schools their children would be attending in the fall, but district officials sent aan e mail this morning letting them know that after a weekend delay theyll be sending them out by this evening. The parents should receive them as early as tomorrow. The way School Assignments work here at San FranciscoPublic Schools, even if you live within walking distance to a school, your child is not guaranteed a spot there. Parents have to fill out an application and this year theres about 14,000 of them listing their top school exercises, and then they assign students to one of the schools on their list. District officials explained to me this morning its a highly specialized technical program, only a handful of people to know how to run it. The reason some families were concerned about the delays, because if students dont get into one of their top choice schools many will opt for private schools and the deadline for those is around this time of year. In the email statement sent out, the district said it was, quote, truly sorry for the delays. They will send out the letters by the end of the day today. Back to you. To make the wednesday deadline.
