Theres a live picture of the Golden Gate Bridge. Thats kind of how i felt this morning when i had the windows open. Lucky enough to get the breeze through the house. I want to be on the left. Me too. Were going to were going to leigh. When it is this hot, everybody has the air conditioners pumped up. Yesterday we talked about the flex alert, they asked people to conserve energy any way that they can in the afternoon. They will ask that again today. Instead of turning up the air conditioner, some people are heading to cooling centers. Thats where Leigh Martinez is in san ramon. Leigh. Reporter we are taking a tour of different cooling stations. Right now we are in san ramon. We were outside and the sun was on my back and it started feeling warm. And then kathy, division manager, came to our rescue and let us come inside. It is pretty cool in here right now. Do you have the air conditioning on . Are you going to have it running all day. Yes. We want all of san ramon to know that the cooling center is open and they want them to be nice and cool at the Senior Center and the community center. Were in the Senior Center. Is it just for seniors . Everybody is welcome. In fact it is the senior and community center. We have children, families, everyone is welcome to come here and stay cool today. You have a couple of different rooms. You have a billiards room but we are too far away to get our signal. But you also have refreshments for anyone feeling hot. There will be ice water here for you and coffee. So it is a great place to come and just relax and stay cool. This is one of five centers, right, that san ramon has. Yes. We have community centers. We have four of them and two swimming pools too. If you want to take a quick dip. That sounds awesome. One more question. Because a lot of people have pets. Are you allowed to bring your pets. Not in the centers but we have a partner who has kindly offered to step up and be available for people to call as a resource if they want to find out how to keep their pets cool and they can hang out in their lobby with their pets for a few hours to keep cool. We want everyone in san ramon to stay cool this summer. Thank you so much, kathy. Speaking of pets, we found out that home depot allows pets inside as long as theyre on a leash. A lot of cities have the splash parks where the dogs are you mostly see kids out there. One in particular is the one in dublin, emerald park. You are allowed to have dogs out there. There are places outside where the dogs can go to cool off if it is too hot in your house. Pg e are warning people to conserve energy. They had 12,000 people lose electricity last night. Theyre asking people to conserve. If you can avoid running your air conditioner, that is great. Come to the Senior Centers. They are running their air conditioners. Use their energy and not your own. To the north of steve in the city of berkeley, there is a new protest this morning against a Controversial Police Training Program. Todays demonstration comes on the heels of a protest that disrupted a special City Council Hearing last night. Alex savidge is live at the city hall with the Ongoing Campaign against urban shield. Good morning. Critics of the urban shield program this morning are voicing anger and frustration with Berkeley City Council and the mayor after their vote last night to continue having the Police Department take part in this Controversial Police Training Program that happens every wear here in the bay area. A demonstration here on the steps of city hall just wrapped up a short time ago. Were learning more about this meeting last night that ended with a protest and ended with Police Moving in and arresting two people who disrupted the meeting last night. Right after that vote at the berkeley city counsel hill meeting, demonstrators took to the stage and held up a banner to stop urban shield. This video was shots with eugene booth. Police eventually cleared the auditorium at Long Fellow Middle School where the meeting had to be held because of the size of the crowd. There were several hundred people on hand. Protesters opposed to the urban shield program has been urging the berkeley Police Department to stop taking part in the program. They say it uses military style tactics that target minority communities. We are appalled by the trauma and the violence that urban shield has been inflecting and reinforcing in our communities in the bay area and around the country. Showed up in hundreds last night to make sure that berkeley took the lead and led the way for the country in pulling out of the largest militarization training and weapons expo in the world. Reporter now, on the flip side of things, police say that urban shield allows for critical training for officers on how to respond to things like Mass Shootings or terror attacks. Last night the Council Voted to continue take part in urban shield for one more year. City leaders will be reevaluating whether the department should continue participating in the program on a longterm basis. Demonstrators say that the Police Response last night was also heavy handed. They say several people were injured, including one man who was hit in the head with a baton. We are still waiting to hear from we still need to get a response from the Police Department about whether that was in fact the case last night or what the situation was. But we do know that antiurban shield protesters just finished up their demonstration here. They are calling for a meeting with Council Members and the mayor here to discuss participation in the urban shield program which as we although has drawn criticismor the last couple of criticism over the last couple of years. Thank you, alex. The commission will consider whether stun guns are an effective device ending volatile situations. San francisco is one of the largest Police Departments in the country that does not allow officers to carry stun guns. According to one report, commissioners will not vote on the issue until after several public meetings. Our question of the day is this do you think that San Francisco Police Officers should carry stun guns . The results so far, 87 of you say yes. 13 say no. This is a popular conversation on social media. One response said yes, there is not a need for a kill shot for every criminal on the streets. Really, gun are a last reexport for military. The elected government is providing a disservice for all. The last two San Francisco Police Chiefs were advocating for less lethal forms. Police commission always said no. Neighbors say he rarely drives since getting a dui. A trace of the phone shows that it was actually inside of his place. Sunday night deputies knocked but didnt try to go in. There wasnt enough to go on at that particular point. You cant just go into somebodys house without any, you know, real further information. Reporter alarmed, the childrens mother made three more calls through the night until her final call at 9 00 a. M. Within an hour, the bodies were found. It was the siblings first visit with their dad under a custody agreement just three days old that their mom had clear misgivings about. There are new details this morning about the shooting last week during a congressional baseball practice in virginia. The fbi now says the dead gunman had a list in his pocket with the members six members names of congress on it. And the Search History of his home computer included two members of congress. The fbi did not identify the members. The special agent in charge also said that the shooter, 66 yearold hodgkinson acted alone and did not have any ties to terrorism. Scalise was wounded in the shooting and remains hospitalized in serious condition. A big win for the Republican Party in georgia. Republican karen handle won a closely watched and a very expensive congressional race. The special election in the 6th Congressional District was seen by some as a referendum of trump. She defeated ossoff by 5 2. 1 to 47. 9 . She will replace price. And it was a clean sweep for republicans in all of the special elections so far in the spring with wins in montana, south carolina, and in kansas. President trump celebrated the republican wins on twitter saying, well, the special elections are over and those who want to make America Great again are 50. All of the fake news and money spent equals zero. Democratic congressman posted this to twitter. This better be a wakeup call for democrats. Business as usual is not working. The president of the United States and the majority of polls has a low Approval Rating in the 30s. Then you have the four elections won by republicans. Can you explain that a little bit . And also does this set the tone do you think for the mid terms coming up . Well, it is explainable by looking as an example at the handleossoff race where in the beginning ossoff took on trump and said woe frighten him if he was elected. Handle didnt say a thing about trump in the early going. As the race went on, then all of a sudden the democratic candidate put trump behind him and started focusing on issues that were relevant to people in the district. And handle, for her part, still didnt talk about trump. So what this says is that for the most part, trump remains this figure that people are moving around as candidates. And he can take his credit, but, you know, theyre kind of ignoring him. Brian, has the country become so polarized that basically the other side, your political owe opponents could run a chimpanzee and you would still vote for your candidate . If youre a republican, no matter what youre voting republican . Is that the way that the country is now . It certainly is divided. I dont know if i would go that far. But it you know, this race in georgia was happening because it was a seat held for 40 years by republicans. And in fact it was a Newt Gingrich seat for 20 years. So it was a real bell weather for democrats. And they poured a record amount of money. This was the most expensive congressional race in history. Brian, it was. Sorry to interrupt. It was the most expensive race. It was close. It was long held by republicans in terms of being valid in terms of looking at 2018, is this the wakeup call for democrats . Does it say anything about how the mid terms might go . Yeah. It says that the democrats need to retrench now, claudine, and have a coherent message that people can, you know, gather around. Right now the Democratic Party has Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders far to the left. And then the more mainstream democrats. And there are some amount of discourse going on about how do we bring the party together. And they have to do that before the 2018 elections. Isnt the or there wont be a change. The Democratic Leaders in california, nancy pelosi, was this a hit for her. It had to be. Many of the attack ads mentioned her. If you elected ossoff, you were electing a mini pelosi. The cofounder and ceo kalanick has resigned. That announcement comes a week after he said he would take an indefinite leave of absence to mourn the sudden death of his mother. Some of the major investors demanded he resign. In recent months, uber has faced claims of sexual harassment, bullying and unprofessional behavior in the company. Uber has grown into a 70 billion company. He will remain on the board of directors. No word on his replacement as ceo. Uber is still rolling out changes even without a ceo. Passengers can now tip drivers using a builtin app. The San Francisco based company will collect ride cancellation fees as well as the waiting time charms charges. Every year, thousands of children are killed or injured as a result. Well, we are learning more about the man who was shot on the bay bridge sunday morning by a chp officer. That man was 27yearold jose of fresno. He was driving a red cadillac that sped towards chp officers at the scene of a crash. Thats when one officer opened fire. He was taken to the hospital and then booked on suspicion of assaulting peace officers and driving under the influence. By the way, the eastbound lanes of the bay bridge were shut down for five hours on sunday. The santa rosa man will be arraigned today, the man accused of starting a fire that killed his mother. 32yearold ian stamp is suspected of arson and homicide in sunday afternoons fire at the mobile home that killed his mother, 66yearold elizabeth stamp who was strapped inside of the home by the flames. Ian and his father escaped the fire. Investigators found a flammable substance in ians bedroom where the fire started. They also say they dont think he intend today kill his mother. When the driver, gary, was finally pulled over by chp, jones says he savage leah tacked the officer. I thought he was going to take her gun. He was at her mid section. So i told my wife, i said stay here. And i said lord be with me. Reporter the 61yearold is a pastor of a church in crockett. Relying on his skills as a former College Linebacker and retired cop, he knocked the suspect clear off his feet, five feet away. Jones wife was praying for the officer. I saw her crawling and then i saw her get up, trying to get up. So i said is this really happening . It is hard to see a woman being hit by a man. Reporter craig a motorcycle mechanic who was also driving by at the time stopped to help. To see that was theres no words to describe it except for it was sick. Were going to mix this together with sauteed mushrooms and garlic. We can do them with brown ice and barley and you can do them with a mix. What it does is comes together. Im going to get right in here. What i like about sliders, i started making them for my children and put them on rolls. What i found doing is me eating them as well. Im not making the larger patties. Yeah. It is great because you can have one or multiples. You have less guilt because theyre tiny. We added in rolled oats. This keeps the mixture together. I love this because this is a great alternative for you if you are not a meat eater or if you have meat eater nonmeat eaters coming or even gluten free guests. Do you have these sit around for half a day. Yeah. If you want to make this the night before. Okay. What i like to do is take the brown rice that i have and throw it in. This processes for 10 or 15 minutes. You dont even need the ketchup or mustard. No. We do these with whipped goat cheese. My goodness. I use an ice cream scoop. So i get even distribution and get even patties. Were going to put them in the refrigerator overnight. You can grill them, bake them, you can saute them with a little bit of olive oil on top of the stove top. I love it. Ten minutes. And youre good to go. These are great for summer. I love it. And pasta on the side too. Yeah. We have over here green pasta salad. This is with pesto, fresco, spinach and asparagus to lice enup for summer. We have mini pies with blackberries, lime. This is the greatest little wednesday morning jaunt ive been on in a while. The perfect summer picnic. I appreciate it. Thank you. Its got to be tide just learned of a fourth arrest in an attack on a lyft driver on highway 101 in San Francisco. The attack back in march was caught on cell phone video. This week, Police Arrested 25 yearold anderson. Three other men were arrested last week and pleaded not guilty to a number of felony charges. Police say the attack happened when the four men took part in a side show on the freeway and the lyft driver tried to pass them. The lyft driver was not seriously hurt.
