Away which means i will step out of the way so you can see whats going on. Three different charges. The center one is the one that will be imploded. There is a wooden cap on top and when this implosion takes place the wooden cap remains although it will probably be moved around a bit. Thats what were taking a look for. I no longer see any traffic on the bridge so that must be stopped at this point. And what its doing now is the police are all around this area are keeping folks that want to watch whats going on, away from the area. One minute before the implosion a horn or can it will sound to frighten the birds that are working around the area. There are a number helicopters around which are the immediate no doubt. You will see what appears to be three barges. You might see some yellow squares those are very large air compressors and they are going to feed eric out into the bottom of this and this wall of bubbles will come up. That wall of bubbles is a blast attenuation system and it will lessen the shock that emanates from this explosion. Were talking about quite a bit of explosives. 2530 pounds each. And 600 of them. Its almost all underwater and it will not be some big depth charge. We want to make sure you know this. You cannot see the picture right now but we see some bubbles streaming up from the area. We expect this blast to happen coming up quickly. The bubbles are coming up already which means the blast is imminent. That is exactly what it means. Those bubbles are important. If there is any see life around and there will be some mortality a fish. But any see life around, this will attenuate or make the shock from the blast reduced. Were supposed to hear a horn or can it to scare the birds away but were close to this thing. We should just basically take a look and see what is going on. Were watching it live now from the helicopter. The bubbles are increasing. When you talk about the event we do see a have stopped traffic and we saw that one person in the water but theres this big area around this. In terms of how this is planned, if someone is watching from short a might not see much. He will probably see next to nothing. Were on. One of Treasure Island. We have a very good view. We have a very tight view. We are now waiting to see when this blast takes place. They need to go at this time. I have looked around and seen no see life whatsoever me know seals or sea lions or anything like that. Were basically in a Holding Pattern now waiting to see what happens. From our and we see the blast cap on top of the peer which is made of steel and wood. So no debris shoots up into the air. The structure to be detonated is below water. It was holding up the structure of the old bay bridge. All that material should collapse right beneath the bay and that is coming down in a few seconds. That is right. It will be going down into an area thats about 25 feet below the base surface. If there is any scrap that falls outside of that, clamshells will later come in and put those into the whole and time and types will take care of cover get. The contract says this thing has to be when it is all done, it has to be invisible. You mentioned see life i know they are one to scare away the birds. There will be an impact they expect 1700 fish to be killed. If they did it the other way it would actually kill more. That wouldve been a fouryear deal of founding and pulling and doing all kinds of things. Six seconds versus four years. As opposed to the situation where you would just go on and on. This is one of all of these other peers. This is also a test to see. If this implosion works for some of these large peers that are still in the water, once the bridge structure is taken off above it they may implode those as well. And that could save years of this kind of work. At this point we have to see how this goes. Theres so much data being collected both in terms of human monitors as well as all kinds of sensors. Its important to note the tube which is not close to this area but that has also been closed because they dont want to create any kind of concern on people that might be on bart back bart. There will be caltrans inspectors in the tube to make sure it is not damaged even though it is a way. They are shutting down traffic on the eastern span of the new bay bridge right now. They are not doing that for safety are they . They are more worried about people stopping traffic and looking. There will be no structural impact on the bridge. That is almost guaranteed. But they didnt want people pulling off the side of the road trying to take pictures or people who might people to be distracted and this control. They are not trying to hide anything. This is being live streamed. For safety sake of the people on the bridge, they wanted to make sure that no one got on that bridge and we do something that would cause problems. People from caltrans engineering are on the bridge collecting data including some cameras but there really is a concern that cars and traffic and people might get in the way of things or cause accidents. Its not going to be closed for long. They said 15 minutes but they shut it down a short time after we went on the air this morning it may be a little while yet. We dont want to leave this picture because it looks like they are getting close. Everything about this new bay bridge was a first i had never done it before. They were breaking new ground and everything about this taking down the old bridge also has many firsts as part as far as the science and engineering. Yes. There is no underwater demolition has been going on for a long time. But it has never gone on like this and it is never going on in his environmentally sensitive an area as here. This took a long time to bring about because initially they were going to mechanically take it apart. But then it was later decided as underwater demolition became more and more sophisticated that they would do less damage and convinced the likes of many environmental groups that this was the better way to go as a direct result thats why we are seeing this today. This is the model. This is the testbed to find out if this will happen elsewhere in the bay. That is a situation. What we know about how they did it agents are going to happen . We have seen buildings come down in las vegas for example. Time charges so the building collapses straight down. This is five stories beneath the water. What you know about how the charges are set so that goes down smoothly and completely . Reporter the charges are set at every two digit point where theres a structural situation what they need to get rid of. It will go often very rapid sequence and they are made to go off in such a way that the thing basically falls inward on itself and does not blow outward. Into this hole that will be made by the explosives as well. This is a welldesigned thing. People that do this are familiar with how to do it. The fact they are doing in the water environment is somewhat unique but this is not the first underwater demolition. Thisll be the most closely watched environmental explosion in history of underwater demolition. Were watching this. Standby for one minute as we watch the progress reports. Lets bring in rosemary to talk about the conditions. It appears in terms of wind and things like that its a fairly calm the day. Yes. A beautiful shot from our view. Right now the bay area is in a slack water. Which means there is no movement in the title stream. It happened before the direction of the tide changes. They picked a good time weatherwise. This in november had to be the month. What is the wind look like . Its unlikely we will see a plume going up there might be some dust coming up. Winds are generally light coming in from the west. I think there will be any issues. It seemed from our Vantage Point we are hearing they could do it at 7 am and they were going to do it are those times of day similar . It will change depending on high tide and low tide. But definitely a calm start to the day. The waters are calm. A good time to do this. Were not seeing any wildlife in that area. The brown pelican, those are all concerns as a protected species and we heard tom say earlier they are not in the area. If they were they would have delayed this. Lets bring in christien kafton. I know they shut down traffic. People are just waiting. When officially did they shut down the traffic . They shut down traffic here probably right about 7 am. Were standing just past the metering lights. Folks are out of their cars and everyone is trying to see. Who can resist trying to take a look. These people are out of their cars taking a look around. Digital you might get caught in the bay bridge implosion . Are you hoping to be out here . I was hoping to beat it across but i guess that was foolhardy of me. I wouldve brought coffee if i had known. Reporter did you see chp . I thought i would not pay the toll and i could turn around if i got caught but here i am. Reporter one of the many people who are trapped. Lets move back east. This gantry is where the metering lights are so that gives you a sense of where we are. Were Walking Around in the number two lane as we get closer to the metering lights and the toll plaza. You can see folks out of their cars looking around. Some folks are even on top of their cars. Want to be clear there is no danger to anyone on the new span of the bay bridge. But i imagine that not everyone out there knows that. Has anyone mentioned that that their concern for think they might feel something . What are people talking about . Reporter jacob and i had to double time our way here because we for parked back in the caltrans lot to the east of the toll plaza. We should walking over and as we walked over we had this traffic. Were losing audio we can see from the pictures that many people are stock. Im wondering if they are patients. We still dont have audio. Lets go to tom vacar who is monitoring this at waterside. Without this would happen about 11 minutes ago. Are you hearing any official word of the delay . Lets talk to the official. This is Leah Robinson leach. What is a delay . Right now everything is being considered and we built into time that there were potential delays. We have a 45 minute window and we are inside of. Were looking forward to this happening unless something changes right now were still in our window of time. What we hear about when it before . A bird can in will go off one minute before to scare any birds away. One minute after that the implosion will take place. When you say can is a boom or horn . It will sound like a boom but its a form a horn. Im going to get out of the way to concentrate on the device itself. Tom, we are still waiting. We see the bubbles still coming up. Can you ask leah how long they will continue the bubble wall. Without one for 45 minutes while we wait . Will that go on for 45 minutes while we wait or will it stop and start . Will the bubbles stay on for the whole 45 minutes . The bubble curtain will remain in place they are intended to reduce the impact to fish so they will stay intact. The situation is the bubbles are there. There are huge compressors on both sides that can turn out as many bubbles as needed. Its now a question of whatever the delay is whether someone saw a sea lion or a question of the sensors or anything else, they want to do this thing right. They are well within their window. We will wait and see what happens. That is the latest going on now. The window i imagine being there it goes. We did not get the horn. There it is live on your screen. They just set off the explosives. 10 tons of dynamite just going off. We anticipate all toward a 25 feet of concrete is now collapsing deep into the day. The bubble curtain was up to minimize the blast but you dont see the bubbles still rising. Only the court in the center. It looked impressive from above. Im not sure from waterside how that looked. It looked very impressive but this was not very loud. The water contains so much of the blast impact and noise. The reality was it was a bigger disruption of the water then i thought there was going to be. It certainly did not move either of the barges and all of the things that needed to be done hopefully have been done. We are seeing some of the debris floating on top. Theres a steel and wooden structure, the cap on it be said that are still floating on top. Can you tell us or perhaps leah could tell us was that expected that there would be debris still floating on top of the water . How will they know whether this was successful . Will divers be going down . I can tell you they knew for sure there would be stuff floating on top because it was designed to be part of the blast attenuation system. This is a good question. Now that this is done, will divers go down . How will they know if the debris fell into the place it needs to . There is sonar and equipment being used to go along the floor of the day to determine if everything that was expected fell into the whole. Once we have information in place, the team will go down and do all of the post blast work that was intended. And we will have better sense as to what all has occurred and what is needed to occur. Im curious why we did not hear the warning horn. Why didnt we hear the warning horn or was it not very loud . It was not as loud as we had our trial run. That is likely because we only had a short amount of charges that were going to take place. Its a matter of how loud it wouldnt be. This was not as loud. There was also extraneous noise like the helicopters which may have cut into that. But looking at this the sonar side scans is the kind of sit back and look at the bottom and paint a picture. You have a very good idea of where this debris is. This will not be imprecise. This is a highly orchestrated operation that has been planned for a few years. We will need to take the time to look at all the data that we are planning to have an the point at which we can effectively assess what has occurred and what will be happening in the next few days. We should mention for our viewers traffic is once again moving on the span. They have opened the bay bridge back up in both directions. Lets go to christian captain who is on the bay bridge for a close look at the traffic moving. Reporter here be our. We are moving again to the east of the metering lights. Traffic is now once again moving across the bridge. It was amazing. Weve been talking about how we did not get the warning horn. We did not hear that but we could definitely here the boom from the explosion and the people who were out of their cars heard it as well. There was a ripple of excitement that went through the crowd. Many people had their cell phones out and were caught by surprise. On our walk back from the west side of the metering lights to the east side, we had many people stop us and say did it go off . We said yes and things seem to be back on plan. Traffic is now moving back on its way. Were looking at sky fox 2. And tom lets bring you back in as well. We see a small boat in the area just outside the barges. Can you walk us through what is happening next. What is the plan . That boat seems much closer than we anticipated. Reporter that is caltrans monitoring the situation. Were hoping the impact on wildlife would be minimal. We talked about in terms of post implosion what they will be doing. Invista picking up the debris and checking for wildlife, one of the next what are the next steps . They are to start looking at this data. They will take and was known as side scanning sonar and it literally goes along and looks downward and paint a picture of what is under. They will be able to see despite the fact the water is murky they can see where the debris is laying and then if they have to move it into the case on which is what they blow up they will singly take a clamshell and pick it up and drop it into the whole. Thats the plan itself. That is the next step the may want to analyze what real environment tax their work. What happened to the Water Quality. They will also look at what happened with respect to the actual impact to various kinds of sea life. As we have said numerous times, this is the test to see if they will do any more of this and this will be used not just by projects here in the bay but information will be distributed worldwide for people to understand what happens during underwater demolitions and especially in environmentally sensitive areas. Lets look now. Were going to roll the video again of the bay bridge implosion for our viewers one more time. There it goes. Its a rolling effect one side and then by the end you can really see. Youve 20,000 pounds of dynamite. Have this structure they wanted to knock down and fall into itself into the water in the underwater demolition. They had a premiere 1500 feet around the demolition site for everyones safety and the barges that book ended the area. It looks like everything went smoothly. We expect all five stories to be tumbling slowly down to the bay floor bed. It will be for moved briefly and then reinserted into the structure there when they built the peers to make sure it is safe and out of the way. Were waiting for now is an assessment of how the wildlife was impacted. Nearly 2000 fish mainly smelled were expected to be impacted during this. We also had the brown pelicans in the area and we wont know how other birds were impacted for a while. Theres a lot to follow but the implosion an actual main event has passed. Were going to take a break and when we come back we will give you the latest. Youre a bow and arrow a broken guitar while the rainwater washes away who you are we go over the mountains and under the stars we go over the mountains and under the stars [ ] back live the bay bridge, one of the largest peers was just imploded a few minutes ago. Everything went according to plan. 225 feet, five stories of concrete tumbling safely onto the floor of the day with 10 tons of dynamite. This happened about seven minutes ago. It was later than expected. They gave themselves a 45 minute window but they shut down traffic after 7 am and took a bit longer than expected. They look like from our perspective now, it looks like it went smoothly and as planned. Lets go to rosemary to look at how our day is shaping up. The slack water. Minute ideal. That meant the tide was not moving in or out so a good time. The small window of time when there is no movement going on. It happened right before the tide reverses. What an awesome view. Were mostly clear. Plenty of sunshine in store for today. Slightly cooler. Tracking subtle changes and that includes clouds returning to the coast and eventually returning to the bay area. We are tracking some fog as well. Fog reported around east side of antioch and closer to the central valley. Around our area visible to better quartermile in concorde. Its patchy in nature which can make it more dangerous. Another chilly start. 37 now in fairfield. Upper 30s naba. 39 halfmoon bay. The rest of us 40s around the bay. 50 in San Francisco. Into saturday and sunday there are big changes coming. We have clouds moving in. By sunset were still cloudy at the coast. The rest of us will be mostly sunny. Notice was coming our way. There is rain in the forecast. It has slowed down a bit but into the overnight, it moves into north bay. Moves into central bay by 4 am. While we sleep we get some pretty good moderate to heavy steady rain. Were breaking away to scattered showers tomorrow. We are dry today rain sweeping through the bay area overnight and sunday spotty showers. It will be a blustery day. In addition to the rain were going to see more snow for the sierra anywhere from 412 inches expected. Up to 1 foot at the higher peaks and the 4 inches around pass level or below you will be chains or snow tires to get home from the peaks. The extended forecast the rain moves through overnight. We could see up to halfinch of rain. Were going to be cool and breezy tomorrow with the possibility of isolated showers. I know some folks who hit the slopes already. Many were going up. I want to go up. You minutes ago we saw the underwater implosion of part of the bay bridge. Up next how much is left to go before the old bay bridge is completely down. The largest structure being imploded supporting the old span of the bay bridge. The implosion happened around 7 17 sending tons of concrete tumbling down to the bay floor all of it going smoothly and safely. We expected it to be somewhere around 7 am. We brought it to you live. The question is what happens now. Where do we go from here . Was this a success . From our Vantage Point it went quickly and traffic went back on the bridge. It seems like it went as planned but that is the question of course as we look at everything that has happened since. Is this what they expected . You can see the debris floating on top of the water. I do not expect that but it caltrans knew that would happen. We saw a boat speed into the area moments afterwards to check everything out. Reporter this is an important thing. Were going to get you a tight shot on the boat about 2000 feet past the blast area. That boat is the Us Army Corps of engineers raccoon. I have been on that boat many times after rainstorms. They go out and pick up trees and debris and docs that fallaway during big storms. They come out to pick that up. So will not be a hazard to navigation. If you move over to where the blast occurred those of people taking a look at the debris itself. The heavy lifting will be done by the raccoon. The reason for that is is a huge crane and has a huge deck area where can put this in. It also has a scoop attachment where you can pick up a lot of the debris rapidly before they commit boats in this to make sure that all of that is out of the way so some boat might wont hit it. The currents will carry that debris sometimes many miles. That is the situation. The next order of business after have taken pictures of everything is to come in and pick up the debris. Now lets move to the left. There is a small boat that has a flag on it. I want you to go in this direction. The boat with the flag. That is a contractor. What they are doing is they are hauling nets in and dragging nets around. This is too far out for any debris to have gotten but its not too far to look to see if there are any fish that have been killed by the blast and it appears they have these big nets they are driving around to see if that happens. Weather thats whats happening now i cant say for sure but thats what makes sense. I know there are many people out looking to see if there is any fish mortality which was expected. That is another interesting thing going on in the aftermath of this. Back to the debris field this debris has to be removed and it is important because there is evidence there is well they want to look at. But its such largescale debris that Something Like the raccoon has to pick it up. That is the latest from here. Thank you tom. We should mention talk about this boat picking up dead fish or anything else. Its almost inevitable the pressure with it came off the explosion was expected to kill almost 2000 fish. But i imagine in terms of there was so much of this that people did not see that was underwater. It was very quick. Six seconds. It was over quickly but if the fish start washing onshore, that is what will get some public notice. But there is Something Else going on which is morbid. There are many hungry birds and if they see an easy target of refreshment they will go after it. One of the things likely to happen is there will be an extra lunch for these cormorants and other birds. That is also a likely outcome of this. We will check in with you in a few minutes. Lets look at the traffic across the bay bridge. It started moving shortly after the implosion about 7 20. Is now moving smoothly after a minor back up. Christien kafton is their life. You said you heard the blast how big was it . Reporter it was definitely a rumble. There is a thump and rumble and we could hear it and folks were out of their cars could hear it as well. Traffic is now getting back to normal. These are the metering lights. It looks i get regular saturday morning. Like a regular saturday morning. As quick as it started it seems to have resolved itself and traffic is now moving at speed limit. We will drive this portion and give you an update later on how traffic is moving. We spoke with a few people who were unaware of white they were stopped. They were surprised to see the implosion was happening this morning. I could show them the video and she was impressed. It looks like everything went okay. Blissfully unaware. People want to get where they are going lets give you one more look overhead. The implosion was very quick. Six seconds. The water looks calm. Its amazing how quickly it happened and how clear the scene is already about half an hour since it happened. They fully everything went smoothly. We will keep an eye on the situation. Lets turn to our other big stories. The Major International news. France is willing from yesterdays bombings and mass shootings. There it is again, the implosion of one of the peers on the old bay bridge. It took six seconds. It happened it 7 17 this morning. They said we would not see much. It was orderly and look like everything went according to plan. All of the debris tumbling down to the floor of the day safely we believe. And the impact of the water is yet to be determined. Were not seeing any dramatic affects. Those pictures from our Vantage Point is something to see. There it is from Treasure Island. That is a different view. Look at how high in the air the water went. It was a good thing the heavy steel and wooden structure. That made a huge difference. We were not sure we would see anything. We saw more than we anticipated. Thats part of the reason they didnt want people stopping or slowing down on the bridge causing accidents. And if they deem this one a success we a have this happen again. 20 more. Looking forward to everyone. Mostly clear skies. We have some patchy fog. Concorde visibility down to half a mile. How those in the bay area and across the country are reaching out to friends after the deadly attack and out of control on the road. A tour bus crashed in San Francisco. The questions investigators are asking today. The i mplosion of the old bay bridge. Everybody going to plan. As five stories of concrete fall down to the bottom of the bay tonight. All brought down by ten tons of dynamite in six seconds. Happened just about 45 minutes ago. This morning we should tell you that the traffic was shut town temporarily but that is moving once again. They werent expecting to be as fantastic as it really was when you were watching it, people could feel it. You see that camera shaking. Thats the cal traps caltrans camera. Thats on Treasure Island. This is a view of what it looked like from Treasure Island on the ground where you can see quite a bit of water coming up. They expected to be small. 20,000 pounds worth of dynamite making sure that gets destroyed. If it works and it appears that it did, they will continue to look at it for the other 20piers that are still stands and need to come down. Lets look at that same area. About 45 minutes later the water calm. There is some debris thats left floating on top. Caltrans said thats all part of the process and expected. Now divers are in that area, boats are aaron the area to assess the damage to wildlife. They think about 1700 fish and other species would be killed by the pressure wave that came out. Its remarkable that we are looking at it and we are like thats it. The water is calm. Everything is fine. Thats a good thing. Back to normal. Interested to see what the side scanning sonar shows us of how it went down we tonight dont know the details. Absolutely. We want to go to rosemary who is standing by with a look at the forecast. There is a lot going on in the forecast. Its beautiful outside but more rain is coming. You are right. We have a split weekend. Just like last weekend. We are dry today. We have wet weather for tomorrow and this time around it looks like most of the rain will fall while we sleep. Back here, we have been following the old bay bridge being destroyed there she goes. Ten tons of dynamite taking down five stories of that cement structure which was once the largest footing for the eastern span of the old bridge. It was taken down in a quick fashion. Under water. We did take you to this live just in the past hour. We have ktvu fox 2 tom baker live on Treasure Island kind of to tell us what happened from here. Reporter yeah. Joni to find out about that is Leah Robinson leech. The long time spokesperson which is all one same project. I guess the question is okay, we are going to get the dewhich is cleaned up. Thats a relatively easy thing. Thats going on underneath the water or will go on underneath the water to make shrieving went as well as it appeared to have gone . We will have sonar on the floor of the bay. That will provide information as to if there is debris around the floor that needs to be placed inside the casons. That information is going to take more time than we have right now. We will provide more information regarding the data and further information that we obtain as a result of our ongoing post blast information. Reporter and given the fact there were so many of these monitors out there both human and sensors, this is probably one of the more analyzed impolsions ever. This was highley orchestrated. We had several teams in place. Designed, construction, environmental. Our contractors and this planning has been going on for a few years. Its been extensive. That Monitoring System with all of those teams i spoke about. There will be extensive data that we will obtain from today. That research that we will do to make sure that we move forward effectively in terms of how we bring down the other piers. Itll be significant. Reporter you have other piers to bring down. Some of them are in deep water and on large casons. Others are in Shallow Water and not so difficult to get at. Obviously there could be a little of both mechanical and explosive demolition depending on the piers themselves. It could be either way or a combination. This data today and additional analysis will help us determine as to how each and all of those piers will be brought down. Reporter thats Leah Robinson leech. She is the person has been a long time spokesperson for the bay bridge project. We are looking at the situation out there and we will be back in the next hour talking more and more about this but i want to thank you and back to you guys. Really quickly is caltrans in fact calling a success . Did anything go wrong . Reporter one question. Did anything go wrong or was this pretty much a success . We know it happened in the envelope of time. The 45 minutes but it was a little late. There is nothing in terms of the information we have thea this point in time thats unusual. We need additional time in order to make that determination and confirm so, what we do know is that the planning and operation with regard to Traffic Control was highley effective by the chp and we certainly appreciate that partnership and helping to make this quite effective. Thank you. Thats it. Reporting live. Back to you. All right. Thank you. The time now is 8 12. We will check in with tom in a bit. First get ready for detours. Crews working on a tunnel underneath the avenue that will eventually connect two medical buildings on opposite sides of the street. Contractors say it should be back open in time for the monday morning drive. San franciscos 18 Month Pilot Program to help traffic rolled out yesterday. Howell pow el street is closed to traffic. Thats near the cable caroline. This will lower the chance of people getting hit by cars since there have been several injury accidents on that area in the last few years. Another benefit is to San Franciscos cable cars. Sluggish stop and go nature of what pow powell street was before we did these was creating a lot of wear and tear on the cables themselves. The street has been painted red to indicate areas where cars are not allowed and new loading zones have been marked off for deliveries. We are looking at from four to eight inches for the lower elevations and then a foot of snow expected for the higher peaks. Snow levels will be dropping down to about 3500 feet. That on sunday afternoon. If you are going up, maybe going to do some skiing be prepared on the way back you will have Winter Driving conditions. After highs for today. Looks at 14 in nevado. 64 sonoma. Low 60s richmond. Mid to upper 60s danville. Brentwood, south bay 68 san jose, 68saratoga a Beautiful Day, a cool day. San mateo64, 64 redwood city. Low 60s San Francisco and low 60s expected for pacifica, Half Moon Bay, partly to mostly cloudy skies for the afternoon. The extended forecast here with your bay area weekend always in view. That system moving through will bring most of the moisture through the overnight. Quarter inch much to maybe half inch. Thats good news. Tomorrow morning we wake up with scattered showers, i think tomorrow afternoon by the raider game time mostly clear skies, could be breezy and temperatures will be cooler back in to the upper 50s to low 1o 60s for sunday, monday and then rebounding tuesday into wednesday. These folks giving tribute to the folks and the people who were hurt by giving blood so they can make sure to help. Clearing the way in the last hour we saw the under water destruction of part of the old bay bridge. Next how much is left to go before that bridge is gone. And dealing with the drought. That will go away. We will have low clouds at the coast. Temperatures slightly cooler today. Right now in the low 40s to low 50s. For the afternoon 10s. Our transition starts today but just those subtle changes. Low clouds and temperatures just down slightly. 63 san mateo, 66 haywood. 66 concord. Over portions of the north bay, i think you will be mostly clear for most of the day but as we get closer to sunset and the 5 00 hour you will start to see the increasing cloud cover a widespread 60s will be the call for today. The weather coming our way in addition to rain and sierra snow. Going to drive down the temperatures. We have a cooldown. Sunday morning. We are talking in the over night hours, the steady rain moves in and then a lot of lingering showers for the afternoon. Let me show you before we go there are the low clouds starting to move closer to the coast. Saturday is a try day. Here we are saturday afternoon and there is the increasing clouds i talked about just a moment ago. The rain is still well to the north. By midnight, one it starts to move in and two there its. A moderate to steady downpour in to the north bay. In to the central bay. By two, three and by four its in to the south bay. Sunday morning and we are left with scattered shower, most of the storm has moved through bringing us quarter to half inch rain and i will let this go through into one. The raider game looks mainly dry. Cooler weather coming our way. Take a closer look at the rainfall expected, more snow and the temperatures in just a bit. All right. Thank you. New this morning another piece of the old eastern span of the bay bridge is at the bottom of the bay. There it goes. That happened at 7 17 this morning. Thats the video from several cameras. This is the most fantastic view here from the water. Look how high thats shooting in to the air. They had a steel and wooden caputo make sure nothing went higher. Tom has been monitoring all of this for us and is live from Treasure Island. Good morning tom. Reporter that was supposed to be thats what happen when is you set off that much explosion but it was a controlled explosion that was required to and did try to bring all of that debris which we will learn from sonar patterns later down in to the casons it so that eventually what will happen is all the debris will be in there and then tidez times will cover that and itll be like it was never there. If you look over here at the super structure of the tower, and then you move off to the left though its very sun lit there, there is a thousand feet of space between the main tower and the next one. That is important because ship traffic comes through here and there was several hundred feet and certainly with in regulation but now you have a thousand feet of space so if a larger ship needed to come through will there would be no problem. Its important that this work was done and the rest of the bridge by contract from the day one the old bridge has to be taken down to the bay mud. As a result of that, itll be taken down to the bay mud but the next possible time for it wont happen for at least another year because it has to be in november, it has to be when everything is ready to go and there is still structure on top of those others and it has to be done in such a way that it work was all the environmental regulations and that wont happen for a year. We have seen all the explosion we will see for a while. Assuming was successful by looking at the data we will know if they will implode the others and the ones that are closer to the shore. They can probably remove mechanically. Thats the situation here right now. Soon the sonar boats will go out and take a look as the debris boats will come in and remove the cap that prevented the water from going higher than the height it already did. Thats a situation from here right now. Its interesting. I had someone say that wasnt dramatic. It was more than i expected when we talked about how much of an event it would we be in terms of what people would be able to see at least people saw that, they it sounded like something even if it wasnt a huge sound. Im wondering the timeline tom you talk about the other 20piers and whether or not they will use this, you know, this was going to be a four year event if not a six second event. Reporter the timeline still is the timeline meaning Everything Else is only permitted for mechanical removal. We are talk about at least another four years if they do not allow the explosion. If this turns out and we have to wait for the date a. If it turns out this was the better way to go then that timeline will be substantially reduced by the fact that they can implode some of the larger larger towers, currently they all have road structure above them or the big Steel Structures above them and that has to be removed all the way down to the waterline like we saw on this one before they can do anything so thats a lot of steel that has toe be has to be removed. That will be at least a year because it has to be done in november. Possibly in december but in november when the least amount of wildlife is a round. We have a lot of Environmental Concern we know there are monitors to make sure that everything is going smoothly. Have you heard from any of those environment lifts . Vine environmentists. Reporter we dont know yet because we have been here. I did see a couple of folks who arent being intercepted by the police so i assume they had permits to be out here. Many of the other folks were up on the bridge or out on some of the bigger boats which have now left the scene. Obviously later in the day we will see if we can hook up with those people i think this is really a matter of data. If there has been a fish kill have you to count that. You have to take into account that some of them may have been taken by birds that saw the opportunity. All of that stuff still has to be worked out. This is something where when all of the work is done, days or weeks from now this will probably be one of the best understood explosions under water in history and that will will tell us where we are going in the future. Interesting tom reporting for us. Thank you for that report. We will check in with you in just a bit. Thank you. This Morning Police still investigating after a tour bus left 20 people hurt on union square. Six of those are still in critical condition. Right now the teams are going out to determine the impact of the impolsion. We did a great deal of planning. There were expectations. Now we will use the sonar and our Environmental Monitoring to determine the impact and thats the information thats being gathered. Reporter this isnt something you can go out and take a look at once you look at say for example the sonar patterns you build a kind of a picture of what is really under there because the water is murky. Itll take some days to get the information and potentially weeks. Reporting live. Ktvu fox 2news. Glad it went well. Before that traffic was stopped on either side of the bay making sure that the bridge was clear of all cars.
