Bart and muni carry hundreds of thousands of passengers every day. Some arent feeling as comfortable as they might while they are riding. Christian kafton is live in San Francisco to give us a look at what is behind the feels. Good morning, christian. Reporter yeah, good morning. Both those agencies carrying hundreds of thousands of passengers a day. Overall safe but there are concerns that some passengers have when they ride bart or muni. Bart riders are dealing with an apparent surge in robberies. That left some concerned. Now, bart riders followed recent high profile crimes including the incident where dozens of teens robbed a bart train and seven passengers at once. An Analysis Shows an overall increase in robberies for the first three months of 2017 compared to last year. Bart stressing that overall crime is still low with 1. 6 robberies per one million trips. Bart says overall crime is trending down the last two years. While there has been a recent spike in thefts of Electronic Devices, bike thefts and auto related thefts are down. Crimes on muni vehicles are trending down at a fouryear low. The Transit Agency is partially crediting the keep them safe ad campaign and that mta workers are safe. Despite the fact that the crime rate is trending down, its not making the target for crime reduction. Overall riders give the agency a b minus for safety. We spoke to one gentleman this morning that says that he was recently robbed while on muni. He said that he feels that the agency could do a lot more to keep passengers safe. We are hoping to get more reaction from passengers who feel how the agencies are doing in terms of keeping the passengers as safe as possible. Sometimes its the numbers and statistics and what bart and muni say is happening. That is the perception. When you have that big group robbery the one at the coliseum. Makes people feel absolutely. That is what the data is showing, especially when it comes to muni. They are seeing the reduction in crime and there is still a perception that its still dangerous at times. So, there could be, as you said, a disconnect between perception and reality. Of course, for the passengers their perception is their reality. These agencies are doing what they can to reach out and make sure that they assure passengers these are as safe as possible and reduce the crime rate overall. If they say they are trending down, they want them to be lower. There is more you can do. Absolutely. It can never be too low. Thank you. We appreciate the report. Time is 8 08. Dont stop now, its easy to add to the routine. Join Energy Upgrade california and do your thing. The Oakland Fire Department is working to get their firefighters certified. Some were missing a certification for the job and it should have been completed by the end of their nine month probation period. We dont want to lose one of them. They are all tenured, well seasoned inspectors. And we will work with them to meet whatever requirements are appropriate. The deputy chief says he is asking for the fire inspectors paperwork by may 12th. Its a written exam. We have the may i dont remember of oakland, libby schaaf here with us. Great to be here. Lets talk about the certification issue. Listen, this is something that does not worry me. We will have it corrected. Im thinking more who list stickley about all the Fire Services. Since that ghost ship fire in december, we have been working diligently to really ensure that we provide the best fire service of any in this country. We have several task forces working. They actually come and trotter me every two weeks. There are Great Strides that we have made. We changed a lot of the reporting protocols for the Police Department. We make sure that all the different City Employees are referring issues of concern to the appropriate department. We are in this next budget cycle going to grow the staff of Fire Prevention inspectors from what is currently six inspectors plus 1 vacant position by two years from now that will be 20 inspectors. Because one of the big issues was there were not enough people to go back and followup and do the things necessary. I think out of the tragedy, shining a light in how to better the system and in that vein you have a new police chief at the helm. How do you think she is doing . She is great. She calls herself chief k. Anne kirkpatrick has charmed oaklanders. Let me tell you, behind the scenes she is all business. She is tough. Dont let that southern sweetness fool you. She lives like a block away from the where she works. She is a downtown resident. She loves it. In terms of the way that you interact, is it a hands off approach saying i hired you for this job and i want you to go for it or i need to check in and see as we go step by step what we are doing. A list of issues she must contact me about immediately. I always hear from her right away. Then we have regularly scheduled check is in without an agenda. If there is any issue around officer misconduct, any time there is a homicide in this city and any time violence gets to a certain level, gun violence, we immediately have an all hands conference call. You want to know. I want to know right away. We have every command staff, everybody on that line including violencef prevention people. Part what have we need this Police Department to do is work collaboratively with other departments, not just law enforcement. I wont mention the raiders but the oakland as are here. They announced that they got a big announcement coming up that they will build a new stadium. Where will it be. Shed some light for us. Can we walk from where we are . I think you will be able to walk from where you are no matter where it goes. They have not told me their final decision yet but i have been certainly part of all the discussions, the pros and cons. I think they are narrowed down to two sites, one near lane any college and one near jack ls land square jackland square. We can walk to both. The as renewed their love of oakland. They are rooted in the Oakland Campaign and their commitment to build a new ballpark in oakland. What would that do for the downtown area. We know what it did for at t park for the china basin area. It would explode, dont you think . It will transform peoples experience of the downtown and create an incredible amenity. Let it be a catalyst for other improvements. Transportation improvements will be a big part of this project as well. I know oakland promise is close to your heart. Tell us about that. You got some big things happening this month. I think, christien, even if its a lot of property climbs and vandalism, everything like that, if robberies are up, people are going to feel like they personally are being targeted and that may be the issue. Especially they had that 20, 30 kids storming the train at the coliseum, it got so much notoriety that will change peoples perceptions . Certainly.
