He hears a boom or a bang, and the bus just starts to accelerate and the gas pedal is not stuck, its just floppy. Reporter on the surveillance video, you can see a woman with a baby stroller as she quickly moves to the side. The brake pedal is doing nothing. So he has push buttons which change the gears, and he tries to shift the bus into neutral, and nothing happens. He tries to turn the bus off, and that doesnt work either. The driver says he tried to slow down the bus. From he says they flew away like paper with the weight of the bus. Then he tried to hit some parked cars to scrub some speed off, and that did nothing. Reporter after three blocks the bus finally stopped. Unfortunately, he also hit some cars with people in them, and you could see ahead down to grant and chinatown, and everything else, and theres cars and people, and so he drives the bus right into the apple store, which is under construction and had scaffolding up. Reporter cartwright says 90 minutes after the bus wont out of control, he heard the alarm go off. It includes the brakes, transmission, and throttle. It showed slightly elevated pressure. What we do know is the bus had a failure. That can occur from maintenance. Reporter the Attorney Says he is planning to sue the manufacturer of the bus. The cal fire report has identified that creek as one that could see increased flows and flooding. So were very concerned. Were looking at two sites that meet the criteria for being safe, sanitary, and secure. Reporter and away from flood zones. I cant imagine what it would be like to be a homeowner that has suffered this terrible tragedy, and then have the fortune of a temporary home that they can live in until they can get their replacement home constructed, and have that damaged by flood. Reporter cal fire and chain gangs are clearing the way. If the rain does come, it doesnt dam up any culverts, any rivers that could back up and flood again. Reporter little could be done about those hillsides. Theyre banked, baron, and look look slabs of rock. It runs off like it would on concrete. Reporter it could bring loose soils running down with it. Crews have since put down a high crow seat carpet on bare hillsides along highway 175 to help prevent slides. You could end up with landslides, debris flow, and flooding. Reporter the runoff will eventually end up in puda creek and that is a big concern. Also on the list cob minute, hidden valley, and anderson springs. All for early notification. Well be working with them to monitor and predict and keep track of any flood flows in the creek. Reporter the valley fire isnt the only problem. Heavy rainfall linked to a strong el nino in 1998 claimed lives, cause the over 150 in damage, and createdded 300 slides, with a large portion of the bay area on sloping ground. If history repeats itself, many spots will be at risk. You can see thousands of landslides that have caused all over the bay area. Reporter the east bay hills, and two spots on the peninsula. What were looking for is to see at what point in the season, theyre completely saturated, so the next storm that comes in, might cause landslides. Reporter then theres coastal erosion. The last el nino eroded pacificas cliff. Seven homes fell into the ocean. 12 homes were condemned, and this problem stretches all the way to San Francisco. Its a very, very weekly cemented sand stone. It doesnt take much to erode it. Reporter the thought of another strong el nino year brings a wave of fear that reaches all the way inland. Today, hiv is a manageable disease with less stigma. In the 1980s, it was a death sentence and a scarlet letter. When you get hiv, they burn down your house. That was a lot of fear people lived with. Reporter today the live expectancy for someone with hiv is the same as someone without it. Of the 1. 2 million americans are hiv, a staggering 61 are not seeing a doctor for care. Hiv advocates hope someone as well known as Charlie Sheen going public will help. Open and honest about it, to where its not an issue anymore. Reporter the 40 to 70 patients a day who come here dont have the actors money, but they do have access to the same treatments that sheens doctors say put the actors hiv at undetectable levels. It can be a little confusing. Its not that they dont have any virus in their blood. It just means they have such a tiny amount, that the test we use is so low we cant pick it up. Reporter which makes the virus harder to transmit. Treatments for hiv positive patients and medications that prevent the spread of the virus are game changers.
