Chris Hayes discusses the days top news. Chris Hayes discusses the days top news. Argument that he can only be impeached and he could actually be subject to a criminal prosecution and i think that has to be of concern to his father not only because of dirt on Hillary Clinton is likely something of value and the federal election laws, both the statutes and regulations, say you cant be Foreign Nationals cant muck around in our elections. If youre a Foreign National and youre volunteering on a campaign, you cant throw in 10 for a pizza. Surely theres some liability for mr. Trump junior and the fact that they actually didnt get good dirt does not mean that he didnt solicit it. Weve all had somebody ring the doorbell and say buy candy. If you dont buy the candy doesnt make it soliciting and that is what is unlawful under Chris Hayes discusses the days top news. Everything about that meeting. What i see with this shift with trump is what has been going on repeatedly in trump world, which is when they sense that theres some bad news coming out, they try to change the story, admit to a little bit, but not the worst part. It started with adoptions and now theyre saying, sure, it was for opposition research, but what are they really worried about . Did they discuss sanctions because ultimately thats what the russians wanted to get out of all of these meetings is some easement of the sanctions. Theres a universe in which the president was told, he denies that, but theres a universe he was told the meeting is a bust and everybody is frustrated and when the president says russia are you listening, he is telling them what he wants. If he knows about that meeting and he knows that the russians are offering it, it takes on a different meaning. He says ill tell you what i want. Not what you brought to trump tower. Im giving you orders. Its what we used to call in the prosecutor world evidence. Here is a question too, b because this gets the tenor of the president. Youve got, kim, the word is the trump team is expected to po respond to mueller in the coming days and that suggests that they had some communication from mueller recently and one wonders if theres a relationship between that and the president s apparent panic. You know, thats pure speculation. I always wonder where this information actually comes from. We hear these things all the time, do they come from the cohen team and we hear whether President Trump is going to sit down with mueller. Its been over a year that he says he wants to do that. Any Defense Lawyer is going to say its a bad idea and the question is about accountability. It seems like the voters do not care and whatever he does is fine and were at this crossroads where we have to ask ourselves do we care about the rule of law. Does it even matter if people violate the law . It seems when it comes to immigrants coming and committing misdemeanors at the boarder, were talking about the integrity of our democratic process, its well established it was attacked by the russians and its probably going to happen again, Money Isnt Put into stopping that and people are turning a blind eye to this. Its time for everyone to wake up if we want to have a free society for our children. The final thing that we do know is that the friend of roger stone is going to testify before a Mueller Grand Jury this week, which if im donald trump im not excited about. Its not just a friend. Its someone in sort of an underbelly and roger stone has been a subject of this investigation for some time and by the public reports the Mueller Investigation has been closing in on a lot of associates around him and this gets around to this issue of no collusion and theres been no evidence of collusion. First of all, its wrong, but the second thing is that we are getting just bits and pieces. All these people are testifying, but what we can glean from it is that there is smoke there and at some point that evidence will come out. Great to have you both. Thanks for joining me. Im joined by a member of the House Intelligence Committee which interviewed donald trump junior last year. Are you confident that donald trump junior, the president s son and a campaign adviser, was truthful in his sworn testimony to your committee . I think that most of the people that came before us need to come back. I cant talk exactly about what they said, but i can tell you that mr. Cohen, mr. Trump, i would say seven or eight others, there is new evidence thats come forward or reporting that brings into question their ver veracity so i would like to bring them back. We dont have the power to compel them to come back. The majority of the republicans refuse to issue subpoenas almost to everyone in this and they went along with the white house gag order. So unless things flip and unless the Mueller Investigation is allowed to do this or has time to do this, the American Public wont know. Just to be clear on that gag order, Don Junior Sat before a committee for a number of hours and answered questions, but that has not been made public, those questions or answers . No. What im getting to is the white house issued something of a gag order for several of the people who witnesses who testified before the House Select Committee on intelligence and mr. Nunez refused to compel them to answer certain questions. I put in context this is a hard investigation to do when youre not in the majority and you cant compel people to answer questions. In a broader sense, theres a question about the president s behavior and whether its accelerating. What is your sense from your perch as a member of congress who has been involved in the house intelligence investigation . I think it ebbs and flows. Certainly since the events of helsinki, the president seems to be a little shaky. This is the president in a legal term freaking out. I dont know how to express it. It seems to be accelerating because, look, his Campaign Manager chairman is on trial, his attorney is apparently appearing to flip and theres so many more things that are going on right now. I think part of it is he starts to get what im hoping the American Public gets. Were talking about the Trump Tower Meeting. What happened just two months before that . The russians told a Campaign Associate that they had dirt on Hillary Clinton. They had emails. All they did two months later was move up the food chain to mr. Manafort and to the president s son. They offered their mr. Trump juniors response was we love it. They were disappointed by the results. What happened just days after the Trump Tower Meeting . Were forgetting this. Thats when wikileaks announced they had these emails and clearly at the same time the candidate starts talking about how he loves wikileaks and hes encouraging them to release more and to hack more. So i think its simple enough for the American Public to Start Connecting the dots. I think the president realizes that that is whats happening. Do you think the president is right to worry about the legal jeopardy of his son . I think the president has right to worry about his son and i think he has a very even right, equal right, to be worried about his own legal issues. Everything is connected here. The fact is were watching a trial for mr. Manafort that appears to be just financial criminal acts on his part. Thats what hes accused of doing, but obviously this is all within the same web of Money Laundering that could have taken place with the bank that was fined 600 million for Laundering Money illegally with the russians. Where were all these things happening . Cypress. If were allowed to continue that investigation, and weve barely scratched the surface, well find out more on what took place. Last week the president said something after he asked mr. Sessions to shut down this investigation. He called the Russian Investigation on a sustatain on country. To your point how this is accelerating and how the president appears to be unraveling, i think the more appropriate phrase comes from the tragedy of watergate. This is a cancer on the president. Congressman, thank you for making time tonight. Thank you. Next, the white house is shifting stories about their involvement with russians looking to interfere in the 2016 election and what theyre admitting only after theyve been caught. That story in two minutes. Its so simple, i dont even have to think about it. So i think about mouthfeel. I dont think about the ink card. Absolutely not and i discussed that with the president elect just last night. That conversation did not happen. Did any adviser have any contact with the russians who are trying to meddle in the election . Of course not. Of course not. It used to be way back in the day back in December Of 2016 that you would get those kind of Blanket Denials out of trump world as it related to the criminal sabotage of the American Election by a Foreign Government and then the New York Times reported that donald trump junior set up a meeting with a russian lawyer during the campaign and then they lied about the reason for the meeting. The original story was that it was all about a thing that apparently they were very focused on, russian adoptions. And then we found out the meeting was billed as support from the russian government promising information that would incriminate Hillary Clinton, which led the president s lawyer to claim collusion is not against the law. Ive been sitting here looking in the federal code trying to find collusion as a crime. Collusion is not a crime. Four months, theyre not going to be colluding about russians, which i dont know if thats a crime. Now the president has gone from calling it fake news to tweeting this weekend that the meeting was totally legal. Im joined by amy siskan and nick adkin. Rudy understands that hes facing for his client an impeachment question. Its like theyre effectively kind of dripping out the facts. Theyre trying to get ahead of the facts because they know these facts are coming out, but you have to sit back and ask yourself if all of this is as innocent as trump claims, if this is all what people do in the normal course, then why are they all lying about it . And the reason for that is theyre still lying about it. What you didnt talk about in the beginning of the show in terms of the crime involved, all you need to do is look at the russian indictment of the 12 russian nationals that were recently indicted in a conspiracy that included not only breaking into the Democratic National committee and stealing documents, but also staging the release of those documents. Right. And if you recall, don junior in response to the letter that he got from goldstone said i love it. This is going to be really helpful at the end of the summer. Especially later in the summer. Look what happens at the end of the summer. Hes communicating with wikileaks at the same time theyre releasing documents just prior to the Democratic National convention, releasing documents to deflect away from the access Hollywood Tape and basically acting a boilerroom for the Trump Campaign. What do you see coming into focus here. I see it from the mueller angle that he has set out through these 25 indicts that its irrefutable that russia did attack our election and now we have the other offshoots. We have the spy for russia who is being indicted and who met with donald trump at the nra meeting in kentucky weeks before this june 9th meeting and then we have the other end which is roger stone and his Six Associates and the madam now being subpoenaed as well. So you can see how he has laid the ground work and now hes reaching into trumps circles to draw them in. Thats the legal question here, right . There is a conspiracy that has been indicted as a criminal conspiracy which says that these people criminally conspired to commit these crimes and who is the party to the conspiracy. Thats the legal question. This is the moscow contact. There were 87 contacts. You have to realize that this is really what theyre looking at now, what muellers putting together is the mirror image on the american side of the conspiracy that was charged against those 12 russians. Youve got some indication of that in the fact that thats what hes doing now. You see trump reaching out and instructing russians to break into Hillary Clintons email. You see roger Stones Communications with the First Contact in the First Release of the information that was stolen. What youre going to see in the course of the next few weeks and months is all of this is going to be brought together in an indictment that is going to mirror what you have on the russian side. I think what trump is trying to do, which hes been effective at, is he creates this alternative truth starting with the swedish Terrorist Incident and everything, but that doesnt work so well with the tweet this weekend because we have a legal process. So hes trying to tell people, yes, donald junior met with them, but its perfectly legal. He might win in the court of public opinion, which is the battle hes trying to fight, but hes realizing and the biggest thing thats working against him is he is smarter than everyone else, that he can meet with mueller and convince him this is a witch hunt. Donald trump junior is just a guy. From the legal perspective he can get indicted like everyone else. Its not true about trump. Were getting information from one side with a big spin with it. All of this is going to disappear the minute they come out with a big indictment. It depends on what the facts are. Should the facts be as damning as previous indictments, i would agree with that. Thank you for joining us. Thank you. Moving forward, were taking into consideration whats good for our driver partners, our riders, and the cities that we operate in. And its going to make us a much, much better service. Manafort . Yes. Did you commit any crimes with mr. Manafort . Yes. The prosecution tried to diffuse a key Defense Strategy on the stand. Gates admitted he had stolen from manafort in the Hundreds Of Thousands. Ken dalaney joins me tonight. Ken, sounds like quite a day in that courtroom. It was riveting. We knew it was going to happen, but its one thing to hear about it and imagine it and another thing to see it. Rick gates who started as an intern in manaforts old Consulting Firm walking into that courtroom and slowly taking the oath and then getting on to that Witness Stand and essentially admitting to a crime spree. Were not done yet, but he admitted to everything. He was indicted along with manafort on all these bank and Tax Fraud Charges and he said, yes, i was guilty of those charges. Then he, of course, had to admittadmit to a series of other crimes because the idea is to get it all out and make sure theres no surprises on crossexamination and try to build his credibility and in the course of that he admitted that he disclosed bad conduct to prosecutors that they didnt know about and one of them was the example that you said, he stole Hundreds Of Thousands of dollars from mr. Manafort, taking advantage of his ability to wire money from those foreign accounts that they both controlled and he used fake expense accounts to cover up the crime. He also admitted to filling out a false letter and Investment Scheme and to being 15 minutes late for curfew and violating his bail conditions. The idea was we have no secrets from you. You should believe him because if he lies on the stand his deal is void and he wont get a reduced sentence and they went through that, the cooperation agreement and his plea. That piece uses publicly available information. Theres also the kind of level of shadiness here. As you hear this gates testimony, what are you thinking about this . Rick gates was defrauding Paul Manafort as Paul Manafort was defrauding the United States government. You look at everything weve learned about these guys and everything theyve done from the tax fraud and Witness Tampering and destroying evidence and the mind begins to wonder, we know that their experience in the Trump Campaign was book ended by this Shady Behavior. What Shady Behavior extended into that period when they were running the campaign . Thats a great point. When i think about this stuff, its like he was stealing from manafort. What are these people up to . To be sure, theyd been doing business in ukraine and thats just the way that business was done in ukraine. Everybody in politics was stealing from Everybody Else and for all i know Paul Manafort priced that into the bill he was charging. There was a back and forth about this tactical move of gates. What was your sense today about how much more prosecutors have to do with him before that cross comes, which is probably going to be the cornerstone of the defenses case. It did strike me today that gates is a very important witness. Its also true that they can prove this case without gates. Theyve put on a lot of evidence crimes that have nothing to do with gates about these overseas Bank Accounts that manafort did not disclose on his tax returns knowingly, but gates is the only witness that has brought us into the manafort orbit. He can speak to manaforts motives and he was part of the scheme so he has the feel of an insider. Hes a pretty good witness. He was nervous, but he was calm and composed and the prosecution pointed out hes a military veteran. He served in the Virginian National guard. He brings it all to the table and hes going to calmly walk through and theyre just at the beginning of this so theyll be a few hours in the morning, the prosecution, all the crimes he says they committed together. Frank, youve made this point before. This was out in the open. Would manafort and gates be sitting in the courtroom if they didnt get the guy elected president among what looks like a vast International Conspiracy to tilt an American Election. We know that manafort visited in connection with his ukrainian work so they let the matter drop. Manafort who had this career based on these acts of what we can describe as theft and fraud and Money Laundering and failure of registration, et cetera, he would have gotten away with it had he not joined up with the Trump Campaign in 2016. Everybody who knew Paul Manafort knew he Shouldnt Step in the spotlight and yet he did. Thats a great question. Theres a guy who should not step in the spotlight, but hes desperate to get in the campaign, hes broke, he gets on the campaign and hes broke just a few months as evidence that has been introduced in trial and he gets on and works for free. Why did he do it . We dont know the answer to that question. Maybe well get it someday. Thank you. Its a big election tomorrow night with a Special Election in ohio and primaries in missouri, washington, kansas and michigan where theres an interesting race for governor. One candidate is a Health Scholar who would be the first muslim governor in the nations history. He is still polling behind the frontrunner, but he has a lot of support from the left, like Bernie Sanders who campaigned for him this weekend. We caught up with him in detroit yesterday to ask him about what hes running on. We often hear this idea of the Working Class voter and sometimes i think theres a silent white on that. Were talking white america. Look at detroit and communities around here. This is a real america. What do The Real Americans in this city and state, what do they want . If you are a poor or working or retired american be black, brown or white, were talking about the same issues. People dont have access to basic things Like Health Care and in this state we know the experience of losing a job and potentially losing your health care. Thats something that people in michigan went through in 2008. People talking about the fact they cant earn a living wage working 40 hours anymore because so many jobs are automated. People are worried about the air their kids breathe and the water they drink. Our message has been if we come together around politics that puts people ahead of corporat n corporations we can solve those problems, access to health care, highquality schools, access to air and water that dont poison your kids, a good job that pays 15 minimum wage, those are things that everybody deserves in our state. In this day and age, in the trump administration, do you have to run further to the left as a pushback to whats happening . I dont understand whats radical about making sure that people get access to health care when they get sick. I dont understand whats radical about saying we shouldnt be asking our kids to suck from the smoke stack of a big corporation. I dont know whats radical about saying if you work a 40hour work week you should be able to afford a life. Have you gotten adequate support from the Democratic Machine . Have the Old School Democrats say we believe in your vision . Unfortunately over the past 10, 20 years, i think the Democratic Party has gotten complacent about how we win elections and who we serve. We cant take money from corporations if we say were the party that works for the poor of our country. We cannot continue to apologize for our message. We continue to apologize when we say people deserve health care, people deserve access to a Living Standard of water or real public schools. Those are not things im interested In Apologizing for and working people know when youre telling them half truths. Why are you hiding from this . Youre running for one of the most powerful positions in the United States and you are hiding out. He really likes that painting back there. Joining me, im joined by the executive director. Democratic pollster and political, ohio has trended toward republicans in many ways. A lot of things that have happened in the 28 demographics have gone. It wasnt peeve contested. What are you seeing on the ground among the trump voters that the democrats would have to win the district like this . I think what were seeing in ohio is just a real challenge from a couple years ago. People are recognize go that there is health care to merely a million, and the Affordable Care act, nearly a Million People in the state. We need good jobs. The triple down policy thats have been pursued in the state house have not reached voters in the district. And we need strong public schools. And there are changes of what they are valuing. It was funny the president went there. I read some people saying, it doesnt necessarily, even though it is a plus 11 trump district. Particularly the places he went is actually the kind of the part of the district that he doesnt want people to know the election is happening. And heres a fundamental problem. Governor kasich hit on this. The overall party, identification with the party is shrinking, you have a base there very much pro trump. But you need moderate republicans, moderate women who have been leaning republican to go your way. It is a 25 plus race. Whats close is you have College Educated voters underwater Donald Trumps job approval underwater. And the majority will break against the incumbent party at that time. And thats why you have districts like this all across the country. You see swinging and becoming super competitive. It is the trump effect. This isnt about economics. This is about something larger. Thats the question, right . Oconner seems to be running not that different than connor lamb. Basically safe democratic agenda. But nothing too out there. He is not out any frontier. But also, i wont be the trump enabler. If you look at the thing that have gone on. The clean energy standards, they have created jobs in this state. He is on record opposing the Affordable Care act and getting rid of medicaid. Thats something that has brought health care to a lot of people in that district. So i think it is safe to say, lets cover the basics and make sure we have good schools and green jobs. I dont think it is such a bad strategy. And even in that connor district. Ive talk to swing districts around the country who feel like they have the better part of the argument. Wherever they are in the range of the Democratic Party, they will lead with that. When you look at it, americans right now, it is not jobs. It is health care. And the prices going up. And democrats can draw a direct line with what republicans have been trying to do with the rise in premiums. What republicans have hurt, republicans dont have anything to run on. They try to run on the tax cut. Unpopular. So what youre getting from the president is, oconner is a total puppet for nancy pelosi and maxine waters. Nancy pelosi makes sense. What is mafline waters doing there, so strange that he name drops her. I dont know what hes up to. Thank you for your time. Thank you so much. One last note before i hand it off. Some exciting news. Ill be on The Late Show with stephen colbert. My interview happened right after the testimony with rick gates came out so i was able to offer some analysis.
