On trade. On her agenda, she wanted to convince trump to stay in the Iran Nuclear Deal. That now may be nearly impossible considering his new secretary of state mike pompeo said trump would leave the deal unless there was a substantive fix. No such thing is expected. During a joint press Conference Trump pressed on his point, iran will not have nuclear weapons. Do you have another plan b that is not an agreement and not military force . I dont talk about whether or not i would use military force. Thats not appropriate to be talking about. But i can tell you this, they will not be doing nuclear weapons. That i can tell you. Also happening miles away, questions on a peace or a new era of peace. North korea and south korea took an historic pledge to end the war between them. But its still unclear whats motivating the north Korean Leader. Following all of this for us at the white house is nbc newss kelly odonnell. You and i spoke before that meeting started. Just when Angela Merkel arrived at the white house. But the hopes for the success of this meeting were tempered going into it. There were always reasonable expectations, and by that i mean important to have the meeting. There might be an opportunity for the president to hear from chancellor merkel directly about her concerns, especially with respect to iran. There is certainly plenty to talk about when it comes to trade. So the expectations i think were in a zone of constructive meeting but would the outcome change . And so based on the president s comments at the news conference, you definitely heard that sort of belli coast tone. He has tried to portray a strong presence. That has been useful when it comes to north korea. You saw it again when he was asked about iran. The president also making clear his concerns about what should take with a north korean deal. As he has done in times past he is critical of his predecessors hopeful perhaps this time there could be a different result. Heres the president a short time ago. I think i have a responsibility. I think other president s should have done it. I think the responsibility has fallen on the shoulders of the president of the United States. And i think we have i think i have a responsible the see if i can do it. If i cant do it, it will be a very tough time for a lot of countries and a lot of people. Its certainly something that i hope i can do for the world. This is beyond the United States. This is a world problem. And its something that i hope im able to do for the world. There was always an outside importance of an american president in something this sensitive. But certainly President Trump has just put the expectations on himself at an even higher level. All right kelly thanks for that. Kelly odonnell for us at the white house. For more on the discussion of the meeting between german chancellor Angela Merkel and President Trump joining me now, steven soak ol, the president of the American Council on germany. Steven, good to see you. Thank you for being with news happy to be here. All right. In terms of what limited expectations people had for this meetings. Say limited. These meetings are are necessary but it wasnt the expectation that came in with macron. The relationship between merkel and trump is not as good as it is between trump and macron. What were you expecting . Are you satisfied . Im still hopeful. There is an ambitious agenda between europe and the United States. And i think we saw that in the first half of the week when macron was here and spent three days in washington and in comparison, merkels visit is quite short. Shes here for working meeting. Are they tag teaming . Are they trying to get the same stuff done. There is a common agenda that they have. I think its very important for us here in the United States to remember sure these are heads of state, the head of france, the head of germany but they are speaking as europeans. I think thats something we need to understand. Its also important to consider the fact that macron and merkel certainly smoke before this trip to washington. Right. And that they are playing tag team with each other. There are sovsly some differences. Look at syria and frances involvement in the air strikes, and germanys sort of standing on the sidelines there. But i think its also important to look at the common agenda when it comes the trade trump keeps on saying he told macron i would love to deal with france. I dont want to deal with europe. Right. So certainly one of the things that macron has seen is the transactional nature trump likes to have. He talk about it in the press conference. Just now it seemed he was more open to looking at europe as a whole as an entity that he is starting to understand you can just negotiate a trade deal bilaterally with a european country with a eu member state but rather that you have to look at it as a whole. As i look at whats going to unfold this afternoon i think at the top of the agenda is obviously iran. You touch on that. Trade. These are two issues where there are deadlines approaching. There is a tremendous amount of concern about the tariffs on steel and aluminum. And and the exemptions for europe are coming off next week. Hear the. On tuesday, the first of may. Thats certainly where macron and merkel are speaking from the singing from the sale song book, if you will. On iran, macron pushed hard on this. Merckle i assume did as well. The president doesnt seem to be budging. The new secretary of state says probably wont make it until may 12th the date on which the president has to recertify if he is going to. Why does europe care so much about this . I say lets wait and see in terms of what actually happens on may 12th when that deadline runs out. I thought merkel was very convincing with what she was saying during the press conference, that this is an important first step. That there are definitely some thing when it comes to verification for example, that need to be addressed. And she made i think a very important point that iran and syria are really on europes doorstep, if you will, much closer to the your fiennes than to washington. And thats part of the reason why the europeans are so focused on this. And the europeans did speak with one voice when it came to the iran agreement. It was the uk, it was france, it was germany, they were all there at the table together trying to establish the agreement. Merkel and macron have both said there is more that needs to be done to curb irans ambitions, if you will. Yeah. But hopefully from their standpoint this agreement can be kept and place and built on, expanded upon, rather than throwing it out and starting from scratch. Steve soak ol, the president of the American Council on germany. Now to the historic pledge of no more war between north korea and south korea. Kim jongun is now the first north Korean Leader to set foot in south korea. This morning stepping over the concrete slab that divides the two nations. The common goal for both regimes is complete denuclearization. Just last hour the president spoke about this Pivotal Moment in history. He want to congratulate the republic of korea on its historic summit with north korea. We are encouraged by president moon and kim jonguns expressed goal of complete denuclearization of the korean peninsula. I will be meeting with kim jongun in the coming weeks. We look forward to that. And hopefully, it will be productive. Joining me now from seoul, south korea, nbc newss Janice Mackie frayer. Janice, how seriously are people taking this move . Does it feel like a real end of a war, a stalemate, between these two countries . Well, they are bold goals that were set today. But they are not unfamiliar to people here. There is a healthy degree of skepticism. And its warranted. People have been down this road before. These expressions of intent have been made before. And the promises have been broken. We have to unpack what they said today a bit. That joint declaration saying they will move toward the common deal of goal of denuclearization. They are offering no specifics no definition of what denuclearization means. There are many interpretations of it. And there is absolutely no hint of concessions by anyone. As of today, ali, north korea is promising to give up nothing. People here are interpreting this for what they believe it is, and thats a tactical move by the kim regime having achieved this credible nuclear deterrent, kim jongun is now able to come to the table with other World Leaders and use that as a negotiating position. What this does is it raises the stakes for that kim summit with President Trump. The president is going to want to have a quick time line for denuclearization. And those expectations might be a bit high. Ali. Janice thanks very much. From seoul south korea. All right, while north Koreas Kim Jongun and south koreas moon jaein declared their intention to end is korean war its actually not something the two leaders can do themselves. Korea was occupied by the United States and the soviet union at the end of world war ii. It was all one korea at the time. The anticommunist south was backed by the americans and declared itself the republic of korea. The north was backed by the soviet union and china. It declared itself the democratic peoples republic of korea. The two regimes refused to recognize the legitimacy of the each. Each claims the peninsula. In 1948, the you be u. N. Declared the republic of korea or the south the only legitimate government on the peninsula. Obviously the soviets rejected that. In 1950 the war broke out when the north invaded the south. The u. N. Security council authorized the use of military force. It was spearheaded by the made to to aid south korea. The soviet union supported the north and at the beginning of the war they gave them arms and tanks. China later sent solders to fight and keep the conflict away from its border. Fighting ended with an armistice in 1953 after more than a million casualties on both sides. Since no peace treaty was ever signed the peninsula remains in a technical state of war. Moon and kim announced their intention to seek a full peace but a treaty officially ending the war can only be reached by the United States and north korea. To talk more about the Major Players involved in a possible peace treaty im joined boy a Senior Research scholar at the yale law school. She is an expert on u. S. china relations. Im glad you are here. I have been looking for you to try to make sense what this actually is. What is it . I think your colleague janice articulated it very well. This is a symbolically important historic meeting no doubt between who leaders but a time when skepticism is absolutely due. In particular, as janice pointed out, no commitment was made in panmunjom that has not already been made before. The leaders have met before. They have not done what these guys did, step over the curb. This is not the first time we have heard them pledge to sign a peace treaty or pledge to denuclearization the peninsula. We did not see them define denuclearization, which is a critical pony component of the way forward. How do each side see that playing out. Where does this fit into the greater thing. Most people think the meeting between donald trump and kim jongun is probably going to be more impactful, but moon jaein, the south korean Prime Minister president , has said for some time that he wanted to have direction relationed with the north koreans. At times that irritated the americans. They wanted to sort of be at the head of this thing. What does this mean for these two leaders . Does it soften the stance a little bit . Well, the interkorean summit is a predicate for the summit that is now likely to happen between trump and kim. If south korea had been unable to secure from kim a pledge to denuclearization that would have suggested that things would not go well in a summit with trump and may be may have warned trump off from meeting at all. Because he was able to secure that pledge however poorly defined it suggests to the United States side that they can go ahead and continue to pursue that goal, however lofty. This whole time they have been preparing for the enter korean summit the United States has been conducting a back channel to north korean interlocktures to try to prepare for a summit with north korea should one occur hoping they will be able to move an agenda forward. Its interesting that donald trump continues to say this is a job for the world. It is for the benefit of the world. This is a president who ran on a less interventionist strategy. Where do you think china fits into the whole thing . China was the main influence over north korea. Is china involved in these discussions and we dont really know it. President trump tweeted about that. He said make sure we thank premier xi for all that he has done. The china have been feeling left out in the last month in particular because it was largely president mine moon who have been the diplomatic innings of this who will thing. And kim jongun has subsequently stepped in to set the table as he prepares for negotiations with trump. But the chinese elbowed their way back into the picture a few weeks ago when kim jongun went to china to visit president xi ahead of both summits. We can be sure in those conversations they talked about what kim might be willing to concede at the negotiating table as well as what he was looking for in return are. I think its safe to conclude that president xi has had his voice heard by kim and it will continue to exert itself in the kim trump summit in few weeks. I feel better having heard this analysis from you. Coming up we will dive into exclusive nbc news reporting that reveals new details about a major player in that 2016 trump tower meeting and her ties to a russian official. New details are emerge being a key player in a meeting at the center of the russian investigation. Russian lawyer natalia veselnitskaya, one of eight people who attended june 9th, 2016 meeting at trump tower which was set up by donald trump jr. Campaign chair at the time, paul manafort, Jared Kushner and other senior members of the campaign were also there. The president s son arranged the meeting after he was told veselnitskaya would be able to give him damaging information about hillary clinton. After reports on the meet the president s son said it was primarily about russian adoptions. Nbc has learned that veselnitskaya has deep ties to the creme limb, including with the prosecutionor general. You said your relationship with the prosecutor general is what . An informant. Our next guest is familiar with natalia veselnitskaya. He is the ceo of an investment firm. In the mid 2000s his russian attorney uncovered a massive tax fraud scheme targeting a company. Rouder believes he was tortured and has fought for justice for him. He convinced congress to pass a law that freezes assets in the presence of human rights abuses. In 2016 russian authorities accused prouder of megging magnitsky. Natalia veselnitskaya tried to convince people magnetski was a criminal. She is two tasks on june 9th. One of them was to try to defend her client, a Russian Oligarch who received some of the proceeds of the crime that magnetski exposed into real estate in new york. She tried to defend her client from u. S. Prosecutors. And the second thing she was doing was trying to repeal the magnetski act. Im familiar with her because she was all over all the issues that we cared about for a very long time. I spoke to you very shortly after the news of that meeting first emerged. Thats what you said. You said this business about her being a consultant for the russian government and working for or talking about adoptions made no sense to you. You were clear at the time this woman is highly tied into the putin regime. Shes an asset of the Russian Intelligence Services of the russian government. And the information thats come out today in the New York Times and i guess more information will be coming on your channel, basically shows that. She was in response to requests from the u. S. Government to the russian government, official requests, she was the one drafting the rooi replies from the russian government. She was working basically at the russian government providing misinformation to the u. S. Government about the complicity of her client. Does the fact that she admitted to Richard Engle that she was an informant mean anything . Does i materially change anywhere that we were in our understanding of the Trump Campaign and the president s relationship to russia . She wasnt an informant. She was an agent. There is a big difference. She was working on behalf of the russian government. Lets look at the facts very clearly. She works for the russian government, the New York Times and rich engle show that. And then she shows up at a meeting at trump tower. So she was there on behalf of the russian government. She wasnt there on a private mission. She was there for the russian government. Every few months she seems the say more about her role. Maybe we will talk again in a few months when she says she was an russian agent. Be sure to catch on assignment with Richard Engle tonight, 9 00 p. M. Eastern for much more reporting on the story on this particular story that we are talking about right here on msnbc. Coming up a shocking new report says mic mulvaney met with lobbyists while at the Trump White House. Plus, Angela Merkel referenced the atrocities happening in syria. Absent a substantial fix, absent overcoming the shortcomin shortcomings, the flaws of the deal he is unlikely to stay in that deal past this may. May 12th is the deadline. Lets look at exactly what the Iran Nuclear Deal is, and what the United States would be leaving behind. In july of 2015 the United States, the united kingdom, russia, france, china, germany, the European Union and iran signed something called the joint comprehensive plan of action. Iran agreed to give up the bulk of its Nuclear Program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions which had crippled their economy. The deal eliminated 98 of irans you an yum stockpile and restricts enrich men to a maximum of 3. 67 . It needs to be 90 for use in nuclear weapons. Its only for a period of 15 years. The deal also requires iran to significantly reduce the number of centrifuges in its nuclear problem. They can be used to chain nuclear fuel into weapons grade material. Before 2015 iran had nearly 20,000 send tri funls enough to create eight to ten bombs. The deal allows only 6,000 send tri funls. According to the iaea, in january of last year, iran had complied with that obligation. How do we make sure iran is sticking to the deal. The iaea is tasked with verifying that the country isnt doing anything behind the scenes to secretly build a bomb. Iran agreed to allow inspectors to access any site anywhere that is deemed suspicious although some challenged the authority of the iaea to expect military sites. For more, im joined by nbcs ali arusa live from tehran right now. Has there been a reaction to the comment by mike pompeo that we may not make it to the may 12th deadline and that the deal may not be recertified . There hasnt been any comment on the pompeo comments ali. But i think it is a stark reality for the iranians that this deal doesnt look like its going the make it past may. Angela merkel what is trying to per sways trump to stay in the deal but i dont think he is looking for excuses to stay in tell. He is looking for an excuse to get out. From tehrans point of view he succeeded in bringing france on her side. Angela markle may be coming around as well. Trump and macron may have a new agreement a new jcpoa with additional layers and rules. The only problem is that they are ignoring the elephant in the room. Thats iran. Iran made it clear they are not going to renegotiate the deal. They are not going to accept any new protocol or talk about things that are outside the sphere of the deal like their Missile Program or their regional influence. Ali, as you mentioned, from irans perspective and the iaeas, iran is abiding by the deal. They dismantled 19,000 sent tri fuges. Shipped out enriched you an yum. And poured concrete into the heart of they are heavywater reactor which could have produced plutonium. As far as they are concerned there is nothing else to negotiate. Inthats fine as far as the trump team is concerned. As you mentioned the new secretary of state pompeo setting up trump wasnt likely to stay in the deal without substantial changes. Its unlikely that between now and may 12th the deal that took 12 years to negotiate is going to have substantial changes immediate to it. Especially since the u. S. And irans contact recently seems to consistent of threats and insults being exchanged. Also alarmingly, ali, there doesnt seem to be day after plan if trump does exit the Iran Nuclear Deal on may 12th. Right. So i think we have left an era of diplomacy three years ago to one of renewed hostility. This is two weeks from tomorrow. So you and i are going to be speaking a lot in the course of the next two weeks. Russia and syria are pushing to disprove the chemical attack in the city of a, syria, that killed dozens of people earlier this month. On the ground the situation continues for dire for the syrian people. According to the u. N. Refugee agency they are 13. 1 Million People in need in the war torn uncountry. 6. 6 million are internally displaced. Still in the country but not in their homes or towns. More than 5. 6 Million People have fled syria because of the now sevenyear war in their country. Many of these refugees flee to neighboring countries. Jordan is one of them, ranking number three overall after turkey and lob unanimous. And ranking second highest when it comes to how much of its population is made up of refugees. According to Jordans News Agency the countrys Prime Minister urged the International Community to shoulder more responsibility. In a meeting with the unhcr the Prime Minister said jordan could no longer bear further pressure posed by the syrian refugee plight. I sat down with her majesty from jordan and talked about the pressing and ongoing issues. With with me now is someone who for years has been a strong voice for protection of refugees. The queen of jordan, a board member of refugee international, a commissioner for the International Commission on missing persons. Your magesty, good to see you. Thank you for being with us. Good to see you. Last year, after having done a lot of work the refugees i finally made to it a camp in northern jordan below the border with syria. The camp and the conditions, the various groups that run these camps are bury than what you see in the pictures. There are not tents, there isser with a, all sorts of things, people make a life for themselves but it is a refugee camp. Even those who dont live in camps they live in cities in jordan. 80 . It is hard to make due. It is not a good life. No. The vast majority are living under the poverty line. And children are you know, education opportunities, health care opportunities, even its beginning livelihood training opportunities have been offered buy us in jordan. We have opened our hearts and our minds, which is our tradition. But the pressure on the infrastructure of the country, the pressure on jobs and Employment Opportunities is considerable in the country already. And we are working very hard to try to manage the relations between Host Communities and the refugees who are living in them. On one hand the host comments are very welcoming they feel a kinship to people who may have some relation to them. Jordan has had refugees for decades. On the other hand, jordan like any country has limited Employment Opportunities and limited resources, and it has to continue to be shared. Whats the answer . Well, humanitarianism is in our dna, as you point out, and has been over the ages. At a time like this, its incredibly important that the International Community support the key coast countries which are lebanon, turkey and jordan. The ones that immediately border syria where people go. As you said brilliantly in your summary at the outset, those countries need support to continue providing we do continue providing the education services, the health care services, the opportunities for livelihoods training, which ngos like my own are offering in concert with the work we do in the Host Communities. When you say support, you mean money . No. I mean training. I mean opportunities. We even have internships that refugees have been offered in the Public Sector as well as in ngos and others. We are trying to be as creative about this as we can. And ensure that our own population does not feel aggrieved by any opportunities they feel that perhaps they might be refugee the Refugee Community might be having because that is the topic of so much International Media attention. Thats what we are seeing in europe, aggrieved local populations, often its misguided but the fact is people who are competing for jobs, however right or wrong it is, see refugees as competition for those jobs. And also overlook the enriching aspects that refugees have brought to countries like the United States since its founding and continue to stay at the ri event at the Refugees International event the other night i gave our highest award to the ceo of troe vanny. Who employs refugees as a came as a young kurdish immigrant to this country with his brother and started a small enterprise with his brother that was based on their none as shepherds back in turkey, eastern turkey. Not unlike my family from syria came to this country, started very simply with what they knew from their own home country. Because of his history, thats why i shoes chobani. He is thinking about a healthy product as well. Also the most inclusive organization. We gave him award not because he is the speak upered to a billionaire, an American Dream story but because he is someone who a third of his work remembers refugees. And the remainder of jobs that he has created in local communities in this country. That was my conversation with Queen Noor Al Hussein of jordan. I was shocked. I was elated. I was deeply, deeply, deeply grateful to the prosecution, to Andrea Constand and the other five victims who testified and to the jury of course. But i was just overcome. And after you had a few minutes you talked to one of our reporters. And you said something really interesting. It stood out. You thought that one of the reasons why this trial succeeded where the last one hadnt is that somebody came in there and spoke to the court about myths of Sexual Assault, myths of sexual harass men. And you thought that was important. It was weird that we had to have that happen but necessary. It was critical. She broke it down to them and then they were prepared to understand that all this victim blaming the slut shaming the character because you had to go through that. And you the other women had to go through that. Oh, yeah. Including in the court from bill cosby. Oh, yes, bill cosby was laughing when the victims were crying on the stand. On occasion he looked at me with mocking gestures. It was deplorable. There were also shils around the courthouse who were harassing us on behalf of bill cosby. It was a secondary victimization as this Expert Witness testified. You have been sitting with this for 26 years. 26 years. Yes, i have been waiting for this moment for 26 years. He told the American Bankers Association i guess it wouldnt be stunning to some of you we had a hierarchy in my office in congress. If you were a lobbyist who never gave us money, i didnt talk to you. If you gave us money, i might talk to you. He said hes taken that hierarchy to his new offices. The daily beast reports six registered lobbyists and others have met with him since hes been in the white house. Those meetings started just days after he became the director of the office of budget management and budget. Joining me to talk about this is daily beast White House Correspondent lock lynn markey. Good to see you, my friend. Are you surprised by this . Should we be whats the reaction supposed to be to this whole thing . Yeah, i mean, to Mick Mulvaneys credit hes really saying something that is an open secret in washington and some people outside of washington suspect is the way things work in washington. If you give money to a member of congress theyll be more likely to meet with you. At the very least theyll know who you are because campaigns keep track of who is giving them funds. That makes it more likely youll earn a sitdown with a highranking official. In one sense he was just sort of tell people saying what we already think. The way things work. The problem is he works for a boss who very, very, very specifically talked about this sort of thing when he was running for president. Donald trump said this is how it used to work and this is how its not going to work after he drains the swamp. Right. And it would be one thing if, you know, he were saying this is how it works in congress. The Trump White House doesnt follow these sorts of practices and that was why we sort of explored the story we ended um publishing today. Fortunately there are nine months worth of calendar online thanks to foia request pro publica. We were stable to identify Campaign Donors of his, in the influence industry, in areas of Corporate America that have Major Business before the federal government that have earned some pretty significant access. Heres the question and you detail this well in your reports. I recommend people go to the daily beast to read this. What does somebody get from meeting with the office of management and budget . So, you were in south carolina. You donated to his campaign. Maybe you had interests that could be brought before congress. What are these people who met him as omb director get for . The office of management and budget has a very wide purview in terms of the money that federal agencies spend, the overall direction of policy coming out of the white house. You know, when they release when the white house releases a budget blueprints which is basically a detailed list of its full priorities for the entire federal government, thats something that omb is really spearheading, has a lot of input in. So, the companies that Mick Mulvaney was meeting with very widely from Delta Airlines to a casino project in North Carolina on an indian reservation. So, you know, there are all kinds of different interests who would want a little bit of influence, little bit of access, little bit of favor from someone with that sort of authority over such a wide swath of government policy. There is no prohibition of this in congress. It is a pay to play, you may not like it but it does actually happen. Are there different rules in the executive branch in the white house . Well, in terms of lobbying reporting, you know, very often well, the short answer is no. Right. These same interests lobbying Mick Mulvaney can lobby him in the office. There were visitor logs we were able to base the story on. Those came through a foia request and the Trump Administration has been reticent to release information about the people who are visiting officials in the west wing. So, it was almost luck that this information happened to be available. They all look very drain the swampy if they gave you that information. Thank you for your reporting. Deadline white house with nicolle starts right now. Hi, everyone. Its 4 00 in new york. It is a rare news cycle when the president has a clean shot at claiming progress toward a goal that unites much of the free world. But thats exactly what he woke up to today with news this morning about historic summit between the leaders of north and south korea. If we know anything about this president one year and three months in its that hes expert at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. In terms of muddying his own potentially positive news cycles. The president consumed this morning on twitter with the russia investigation again. Tweeting his daily collusion denial. Quote, just out, House Intel Committee report released. No evidence that the Trump Campaign colluded, coordinated or conspired with russia. Clinton Campaign Paid for Opposition Research obtained from russia. Wow must end now. It was one of the clearest articulations, if you can call it that, of his intention or desire to end investigations into russian interference. And it also came on the very same day that nbc news is reporting that a key figure in that trump tower meeting in which the president s son, soninl
