I have the biggest rallies ive ever had and we have covid. People are saying, whatever, leave us alone, theyre tired of it. People are tired of hearing fauci and all these idiots, these people, these people that have gotten it wrong. Fauci is a nice guy, hes been here for 500 years. He called every one of them wrong. And yet we keep them. Every time he goes on television theres always a bomb. But theres a bigger bomb if you fire him. Fauci is a disaster. This as the total number of coronavirus cases are on the rise nationwide and dr. Fauci revealed he was expecting the outbreak at the white house. Were you surprised that President Trump got sick . Absolutely not. I was worried that he was going to get sick when i saw him in a completely precarious situation of crowded, no separation between people and almost nobody wearing a mask. When i saw that on tv, i said oh, my goodness. Meantime senator Kamala Harris is on her way to an event in jacksonville, florida, just days after 100 one of her colleagues mocked her name and sparked a fund raising surge for his democratic opponent. Were going to speak to Democratic Senate candidate jon ossoff in a few minutes from now, but we want to begin in arizona where President Trump is campaigning today and joining me from that trump rally in prescott, arizona. Nbcs vaughn hill hard. Also with me reporter for the Washington PostAshley Parker and republican strategist and Senior Adviser to the Lincoln Project susan dell percepersio. The president set to speak any minute now. Tell us what youre seeing in terms of messaging and what hes expected to say as we head into this final twoweek stretch. Air force one landed into phoenix and now the president is route via marine one to prescott, about 85 miles north of phoenix. The reason he is here because when you look back to 2016, yapapi county a rural part of the state, a place that went by a twotoone margin for him and the president is losing among independent voters, losing among suburban voters. When talking about arizona, 75 of the electorate lives in the greater tucson and phoenix area, the suburban areas, and why this campaign is now shifting today its focus up here to northern arizona, needing to jouice thei turnout in areas like this. Senator Martha Mcsally who is struggling against democrat mark kelly will be joining the president. I asked mcsally at an event if she regretted standing by this president over her last four years, not only did she lose her 2018 bid but on the brink of losing the second seat and she believes she had spoken up against the president when she needed to. Yet the Arizona Republican party of today is different than the one john mccain oversaw 12 years ago. Prescott is where he held his final Campaign Event as president the night before his 2018 election. This is a different place. Thousands of folks that have turned out. Voters say they frankly dont believes the polling, that they are not being properly accounted for. That question is with those deficits in maricopa county, can President Trump make up those margins. Those deficits among the rural voters here in heavily support of him. I was going to say. We should note we saw miss mcsally on the tarmac with the president , she was wearing a mask, he was not. The president appeared to be in a bad mood when he spoke to reporters a few minutes ago, attacking dr. Fauci. Is anyone within the campaign worried this will all backfire in the final two weeks of the election . Of course theyre worried. A number of people in the campaign and president s orbit are worried and they can articulate a closing message they think could be potentially successful going after joe biden on some policy issues like taxes, Foreign Policy and making the argument that if you reelect trump the economy will improve and covid will get better. Whether or not thats true is a different question but thats the Closing ArgumentTrump Campaign aides generally would like to see. Thats not the argument the president is making at all. You just showed him talking to reporters in a bad mood, airing personal gripes and grievances and there was a Campaign Call earlier this morning where the president was there to rally supporters, the campaign invited a number of reporters to listen in. On that call it wasnt the scripted Closing Argument they would want to see. It was him going off on dr. Fauci and the scientists and getting angry, nitpicking with stories he didnt like and that again is not a traditional successful Closing Argument or the one this president making with 15 days left. Do you think it called anyones nerves down . It may have calmed the president s nerves down to sort of get that off his chest, thats often the role that rallies play too, but the campaign knows what their internal polling looks like and what voters want to hear and what will help the president close that deficit with suburban women, senior voters, cut the margins a little bit in a way that could help him with hispanics and black voters and that is not the message that will do it. Let me play for you a sound bite. Heres how mark meadows described it earlier today. The Senate Republicans have been very vocal in terms of their lack of support. There are some in the senate that would support it. Whether theres enough votes to get to the 60 vote threshold thats up to leader mcconnell. Seems like mark meadows is shifting blame already trying to pin this one on Mitch Mcconnell saying he cant get the support of the rest of the republican senators. Whats happening here . To put up a bill to get to 60 votes and it may have to be a compromise. Its that easy. At the end of the day this is a failure of the president an thats what the president does. He blames others for things he cant get done and mark meadows is just an extension of that. He had this responsibility to keep us safe. Ayman, when i think about where we were from april to today, what has the federal government done to really help us . What has President Trump done . How is he acting differently to make our country safer, to make us be able to live longer lives an keep our family members safe and sound . Hes done nothing. Thats whats starting to resonate with voters. He is not able to take us through this recovery or even plan for a National Recovery once we do get a vaccine. Thats what were seeing in the polls. And as far as what mark meadows or anyone else says, they just obey the president and if they dont, they dont have a job. Ashley, speaking of what the president and the Covid Task Force have been doing, your paper reports that dr. Deborah birx asked Vice President mike pence to remove controversial dr. Scott atlas from the Covid Task Force. Is atlas continued presence there a sign that the scientist, the respected scientists have been sidelined . Its absolutely a sign of that. Scott atlas is someone who sort of again the respected as you put it Public Health officials, doctors, scientists do not find his presence or his theories helpful. This is someone who the post reported, the white house denied, and the white house confirmed in any number of ways, scott atlas promoting herd immunity. It is one you see the president increasingly moving towards privately and publicly and not what Public Health officials want to see. Scott atlas is not a doctor who has any expertise in this area, but his presence means he is playing an outsized role. Susan the question becomes, weve already seen a lot of down ballot republicans facing all kinds of problems, but if theyre closing out with this message that we heard there from ashley and dr. Scott atlas, which is to not follow the advice of the doctors and scientists how problematic is that for those vulnerable down ballot republicans . Its the whole ball game. At the end of the day, people look at their family members and see if theyre learning remotely or not, seeing if they have if grand parents can visit for thanksgiving. These are signs that the virus still exists and you can be infkted by it. Martha mcsally is doing so bad that she needs trump voters to help her. Shes trailing so much behind where President Trump is. All right. Susan, ashley, vaughn, thank you to all three of you for starting us off this hour. Georgia republican senator david purdue facing backlash for appearing to mock the name of Vice President ial nominee Kamala Harris. Into. The most insidious thing that joe biden and Chuck Schumer are trying to promote, joe biden, kamala, i dont know, whatever purdues Campaign Called it a simple mispronunciation, but critics pointed out the racist overtones of the comments there. Purdues democratic opponent jon ossoff raise over 1. 8 million from at least 42,000 donors off of that viral moment. Earlier this year purdue was criticized for releasing an ad that exaggerated ossoffs nose who is jewish. The Campaign Said it was an accident. Joining me now is democratic candidate for senate in georgia, mr. Ossoff, thank you for joining us. Real clear politics shows you and senator perdue neck and neck. How are you feeling how this race is going and do you think this incident we just played will swing undecided voters if there are any left in your state in your direction . Well, it reveals how out of touch senator per due. Here we are in the midst of a tragedy when we need unifying leadership. Hes acting like a schoolyard bully making jokes about heritage of his political adversaries. Its so out of touch with the kind of leadership that the people of my state tee serve and need. When so many lives have been up ended, so man lives have been lost, so many people are just longing for normalcy, competence an honest leadership that puts Public Health ahead of cheap politics and this is the best that my opponent has, this is why his campaign is in freefall. Its desperate and its pathetic. How are you feeling abouts the state of the race right now . Well, georgia is the most competitive state in the country. Thats why Mitch Mcconnell has spent more money attacking me than any other Democratic Senate candidate in america. Remember Stacey Abrams only lost here by 55,000 votes two years ago. Weve registered 800,000 new voters since then. Georgia becomes younger and more diverse by the day. Georgians are demanding change because what were getting from the federal government right now is a disgrace. Our senator has failed us and we have a lot of momentum in georgia right now. Lets talk about some of that change. If you are electd to the senate, obviously one big question you would be posed with right away is whether or not you would support adding justices to the Supreme Court. Whats your position on that, if, in fact, joe biden does win with and you are elected, would you support him in expanding the size of the Supreme Court . I dont support expanding the court because we dont like the policies of recently confirmed justice, but i have great grave concerns about judge barretts positions on row v. Wade, Affordable Care act, here we are in the middle of the pandemic and politics are still carrying water for the insurance industry, still trying to repeal conditions for preexisting conditions and the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on the aca a few days after this election. This is why the Senate Matters and i need help to overcome this Voter Suppression that were seeing in georgia with black voters made to wait six, ten hours to vote. Visit electjon. Com to make sure every voice is heard. The Supreme Court set to take up the issue after election day, if the a c a is struck down, do you think democrats can examine to an agreement on a replacement plan . Well, the good news is this, even though the Supreme Court will begin to hear oral arguments in november they likely will not rule until next may or june. This is why its important we have a Democratic Senate so the legislative response will protect health of families here in georgia and across the country. This is about corruption in washington. The reason politicians like my opponent are still pushing to repeal protections for preexisting conditions even in the middle of a pandemic is because they are bought and paid for by insurance and Drug Companies who want to make more money denying care to people who are already sick. We need to win the United States senate, win his race in georgia to elect Public Servants who will put the health of our families ahead of the profits of the insurance industry. Because georgia is such a contested state as you mentioned, how concerned are you about the integrity of the vote and the outcome of the vote given what were seeing play out in some other states . Well, im very concerned by Voter Suppression in georgia. This is the front line in the struggle for Voting Rights. I got my start around Public Service in government working for congressman john lewis 55 years ago. He had his skull fractured marching across the Edmund Pettus bridge for Voting Rights and still black americans in the south are being is enfranchised by politicians who abuse their power to suppress the vote. This is why we need help here in georgia. We have the public will, we have the numbers to win these races, but we need support to protect ballot access. Im asking everyone to visit electjon. Com and help us power our voter protections. Georgias democratic nominee for president jon ossoff. We invited senator perdue to join us today and did to the get a response. We are 15 days until election day and more than 25 Million People have cast their ballots. With that number expected to grow, after the break, we are live in battleground florida with a look at how day one of early voting is going in a state trump narrowly won. Much more from dr. Anthony fauci, what he has to say about the antiscience rhetoric about the vu that President Trump continues to push. Youre watching msnbc. There have been already some long lines in several places including in lee county where voters waited outside in the rain to cast their ballot. Joining me from Fort Lauderdale is kerry sanders. Good to have you with us. What have you heard from the voters lightning ning up there . Theres a lot of excitement and people showing up and when you show up at a polling location and in florida you have to stand 150 feet away because they dont want any influences on voters, some things can unfold in front of you you dont expect and here is one of them. Her name is julia and im going to stand back and let you see the sign that she has and ill read it, im only 106 years old and i vote. Julia doesnt speak english but im it going to talk to her in spanish and do instant translation. [ speaking Foreign Language ]. Its a great honor to meet you. Whats the reason you came here today . If you dont understand it you should probably get it from her face that the young people should come out and vote. Shes enjoying a good laugh. Getting ready to vote. I mean come on, ayman, 106 years old, look at that. Statistically interesting because one in ten eligible young voters between the age of 18 and 23, one in ten voters are between the ages of 18 and 23, so if they were to show up think of the power they would have at the polls. Here we are, 106 years old. Anybody who says i dont know whether im going to vote, kind of busy, got to look at this. Julia, be out here voting at 106. Trust me, shes got a lot of energy, got her family here with her, but you know, that takes a lot to come out and do it in person the way shes doing it. I was going to say. Absolutely inspiration to everyone in this country who may be thinking of sitting this election out should not do that and take her as an example. Kerry sanders thank you for bringing us that. A wisconsin judge reimposed an order from the States Health department to limit the number of people inside bars and restaurants to 25 of capacity. Y the state is facing a rise in cases and hospitalizations. Mayor Lori Lightfoot warning residents the city is in the midst of a second wave of the virus. The mayor says chicago is averaging more than 500 new days a day, the highest since late may. In north dakota where early voting kicks off today, 4 of the states population has contracted the coronavirus since march. A large portion of those cases have happened in recent weeks. And over the last few days north dakota has recorded its highest number of new cases hospitalizations and deaths. Joining me from bismarck, is msnbcs josh latterman. Good to have you with us. What are you hearing from Public Health officials about the extent of the second outbreak . I think the word to use, ayman, is helplessness. The Public Health officials here know what needs to happen, but its really hard to do it. Over the last several weeks north dakota has gone from having basically very small number of covid cases, not really having to worry about it in any significant sense, to having the most news cases per capita of anywhere in the country. While officials here know that the things they need to do are to limit these social gatherings that are continuing to happen, many of them indoors as the weather gets colder here they need more people to wear masks. There is a deep resistance in north dakota to having that policy be top down, something that government imposes on people. Thats rubbing some Public Health officials as well as some residents the wrong way. Take a listen to what one bismarck resident told me a little bit ago and her fellow north da cotans who refused to wear masks. I think theyre being selfish. Selfish . Yeah. Because theyre doing what they all want to do and not respecting anybody else, which that if they wear a mask thats protecting us too and them. Reporter ayman, if you want to get a sense of what theyre working with here, a few hours ago there were two open icu beds that were available here in bismarck. I checked the latest numbers, theres now one. Its right behind me at Sanford Medical Center and the only staffed available icu bed in the bismarck area. Shows you how small of a margin, little wiggle room the authorities have here as they continue to see these cases climb. Josh live in north dakota, thank you for that. Over the past two weeks, 38 states have seen a greater than 10 increase in new coronavirus cases and Health Officials are warning that we are now entering the third or a third peak of the pandemic in the United States. Joining me is a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins center for health study. Its great to have you with us. Anthony fauci joined the academy of medicine where he addressed the issue of antiscience rhetoric. Weve heard a lot of that in this country. Heres what he had to say. Were going through a time that is disturbingly antiscience and certain segments of our society thats very troublesome to me and we really need a group of scientists and Health Care Providers to really stick together in our principles because it is not going to be very easy as we go on with these challenges. This is a very difficult period in our existence and we need to be this stedfast, vocal defenders of the scientific process. That is quite a stark warning there, that we are in some kind of dark ages of the sciences if you will or people believing the scientists to be more accurate. What do you make of dr. Faucis message there . I completely agree with him. I think the antiscience rhetoric is at a peak and threatens to pull us in the dark ages. If you remember the dark ages from history class thats a time when peoples life spans fell, death and disease an thats what were facing. We have the pandemic, science, medicine, reason, logic being attacked to the just by fridge fringe but the president in the white house. This is something completely unheard of during an Infectious Disease emergency that we are being called back by the voice of the dark ages. I think we have to be very forthright and defend science and we have to defend medicine and we have to tell people that there are not alternative facts, there is one reality and the way we learn about the coronavirus is using our minds and thats going to be the ultimate solution. Its science. Not ignoring it, not evading it. I was going to say, one would have made the argument in this Information Age having more access to science would make us smarter. Were seeing almost the exact opposite with a way of a lot of these theories make their way into the mainstream. Let me switch gears. The u. S. And europe are seeing a rise if new cases but there has not been a proportion al increase in the number of reported deaths. Can you explain that for our viewers . The number one thing is deaths are called a lagging indicator. It takes a while to get severe enough and die. Theyre not going to be sin cra nis. If you see where young are people are getting infected its going to take time to transmit that to a Vulnerable Person who gets hospitalized and dies. We may not see them at the same time. We have gotten better. By october of 2020 than march of 2020. People who get admitted to the hospital dont quite die as frequently because we have new tools like remdesivir and dexamethasone and better strategies on the ventilator and oxygen therapy and diagnosing people quicker and know a lot more about the complications and how to prevent and predict them and getting somewhat better at protecting vulnerable populations in Nursing Homes then when people were getting discharged to the Nursing Homes and the virus was spreading rampant. There are better techniques were using with this virus which is what we would expect with the novel virus people are learning real time about. One thing we struggle with is Hospital Capacity. One of utahs largest hospitals you utah health ran out of beds friday. The chief medical officer told the associated press, quote, we are very concerned about flu season particularly if people dont get vaccinated. We cant take another hit. What is your concern for Hospital Capacity in hard hit states like we just saw there in north dakota and utah . It has to be the biggest concern because this is why we were trying to bend the curve. We were trying to be able to preserve Hospital Capacity. Clearly we still are having difficulties in parts of the country, wisconsin and utah and north dakota where icu beds come under a crunch and we have to prepare for flu patients that will take those beds. Im talking to you from a hospital in the pittsburgh area and a patient intubated on a ventilator with influenza. This is a real thing we have to think about and make sure Hospital Capacity is preserved and hospitals have enough personal protective equipment and staffing. Were going to get more covid cases as it gets colder an deal with influenza cases were starting to see. This is a paramount thing we have to measure and Public Health has to be tied to capacity. Thank you very much. Appreciate your time sir. Thank you. President trump is using his rallies to attack a fellow republican up for reelection. The president lashd out against nebraska senator ben sasse after he criticized the president during a telephone town hall. The republicans. We have some great ones. They have to learn to stick together better. We have some stupid people. We have some stupid people. Now we have this guy sass, he wants to make a statement. Little ben. Little ben sasse. The republicans have to stick together better. But sass isnt the only republican senator trying to put distance between himself and the president. Texas senator swron cornyn now saying he disagreed with President Trump on diverting pentagon funds for the border wall despite defending it in public. Speaking to the for the star telegram Editorial Board cornyn described his relationship with trump as, quote, maybe like a lot of women who get married and think theyre going to change their spouse and that doesnt usually work out very well joining me is nbc National News correspondent steve kornacki. Senator cornyn criticized President Trumps handling of coronavirus. Whats behind this . Its interesting. Cornyn up for reelection in a texas thats changing politically demographically. Take a look. 2016 when trump ran and won he won texas by nine points. It was a solid win for trump, although that was down a bit from what republicans had been doing. He won it by nine but then two years later in the 2018 midterm, remember this race, ted cruz running for reelection to the senate in texas, he won but two and a half points basically his margin. Went from republicans with trump winning texas by nine to cruz hanging on by 2 1 2 points. You saw democrats making inroads around dallas, houston, metro areas, suburbs around the state, really strong democratic gains there in 2018. Now you look at 2020, there hasnt been a ton of recent polling out of texas. The closest from morning council, close to two weeks ago. You had trump up only 2 in their poll statewide, cornyn up nine, although a lot more undecided in that senate race. I think what it might reflect on the part of cornyn is an awareness of what we took you through there. Texas, formally a staunchly republican state, its one of those that changed dramatically in the trump era. You saw it in the metro areas. Is it enough to have core fin in trouble this year . Enough for biden to pick it off . That still seems like it might be a long shut shot but enough to make cornyn sweat in it can and make that president ial margin close. Certainly that at the least, ayman. As we noted its one thing to see what he does now so close to the election, lets not forget he defended the border wall when it was being discussed in public. Steve kornacki, thank you as always. Unless you were there you probably dont know people with guns rallied at michigans State Capitol over the weekend. There are 15 days left in the election. Your latest vote watch. We are less than 90 minutes away from the deadline to register to vote in pennsylvania and the Washington Post writes that local officials are inundated with complaints from firsttime and absentee voters, struggling to register or request a mailin ballot. The post writes College Students in three counties who attempt register online were rejectd and notified they had to provide documentation in person or by mail. The North Carolina state board of elections issued guidance on how voters can pitch problems with their ballots. Allows them to deal with 10,000 ballots in limbo due to legal challenges over the witness requirements for voting by mail according to the associated press. A state Appeals Court reinstated the deadline for mailin ballots reversing a Lower Court Ruling that would have allowed ballots postmarked on election day to be counted up to 14 days afterwards. An appeal of the decision is likely. Once again this weekend protesters with long guns appeared at the michigan State Capitol to protest and the rally included a faction of the group known as the boogaloo bois according to our affiliate. According to the lancing state journal a member stated that, quote, unity is the mission of their rally, disavowed racism and violence, in spite of their roots and michigan officials have confirmed this year two of the men charged in relation to an alleged plot to kidnap Governor Whitmer were at the State Capitol carrying long guns protesting the stayathome order. Joining me is Democratic State senator from michigan dana polanki. Thank you for joining us. You took a photo of these two brothers at the capitol and you were in the room with them at the time. What was it like to be surrounded by men with guns who were later arrested in this alleged kidnapping plot . Right. Its interesting because here in michigan, you cant you cannot bring signs into our State Capitol because the signs might accidentally rip the historic wall paper but you can bring guns of any type, loaded, open carry or concealed carry, and, you know, even though i intellectually knew this on that day april 30th when the armed gunmen were right above me, seeing it happen in real time is just a really different experience. Frankly, i was terrified. What was that experience like for you when you were just surrounded by, you know, president men with the long guns . Theyre just above us, you know, feet above us in a balcony and our chairs sit facing the other way, so literally, you have 38 senators with their backs to these men who are carrying these highpowered rifles and mag za zones and they were there to intimidate and to threaten and frankly to suppres First Amendment right to vote freely and speak freely on behalf of my constituents at my workplace. What was your opinion of the rally that took place in michigan this weekend . You know, ive seen more people, frankly, for potato day at the capitol or equine day. It wasnt a big crowd. However, according to that Lansing State Journal report that i also read, the 14 men who allegedly plotted to kidnap our governor and storm our capitol and take us hostage had ties to this group. So you know, i read that they are really about peace and unity. So if you are about peace and unity, why are you open carrying guns at our capitol over the weekend. It just doesnt make sense. As you are probably aware, the president has taken aim at Governor Whitmer many times. Here is a sound bite from this weekend. What you are doing in michigan has been amazing. Now, you got to get your governor to open up your state, okay . Lock her up, lock her up. Lock em all up you. He wasnt doing anything i dont think to provoke people to threaten this woman at all. He was having fun at a trump rally. What is your response there to saying that this is just the president to having fun . That is not fun, not in this political climate. He called our governor a dictator because of her stayathome stay safe orders which frankly have saved thousands of lives here in michigan. And when you hear words like dictator or tyrant or even monarch coming of people of influence, even newspaper he editors here in our state, that puts targets on the back of michigans laeblg michigan elected officials. And these gun toting groups take the bait and run for it. So the rhetoric is not funny. It is dangerous. And to that point, how concerned, how scared, how worried should michiganders be on election day . As a sitting member of the state senate, how worried are you about violence after election day . You know, after election day, i dont know. But on election day, i can tell you that our secretary of state Jocelyn Benson has clarified that open carry will not be allowed in any of our polling places. Everyone should feel safe when they vote here in michigan on november 3. And our secretary of state, our attorney general, they are committed to doing just that. All right. Michigan state senator, thank you so much for joining us. Appreciate your time this afternoon. And as President Trump calls on supporters to go to the polls and watch for fraud, michigans democratic secretary of state has unveiled new restrictions as we injuries heard theprohibit o carry at polling places. Individuals openly carrying firearms will not be allowed within 100 feet of polling places. Joining me now is dr. Burns live in grand rapids for the latest in our county to county series. Bring us up to speed. You followed a local activist and militia member trying to recruit volunteers to, quote, protect the vote. Tell us about it. Yeah, we followed adam as he recruited folks at a trump rally here off the weekend, he figured that would be a great place to find individuals who are eager to get involved and he was not wrong. He was pretty popular among that crowd there waiting for the president. And it was clear that the president s words, his call to action to go and watch the polls and watch carefully resonated deeply with many of his supporters as we spoke to people, there was a lot of skepticism around the electoral system and folks that wanted to take it upon themselves to safe guard the vote. Of course what that means, there are a lot of people looking to get involved who have never been poll watchers or challengers. And so here in michigan, anyone can be a poll watcher, but they cant actually be in the voting area and they cant do much other than ob seven. On the other hand, there are challengers, but those have to be appointed by a party, those folks are trained and they can be in the voting area. And folks that i met werent necessarily clear on the distinctions, but they certainly wanted to take some action. Take a listen to some of what we heard. Dont trust em. When dont you trust are 1 . 4 the left, number one. They lie, they cheat, they do anything to win the election. They are trying to shield the election. A lot of people say there is not, but you look at the news are you worried that group of folks watching, will that intimidate . Voters . It might, but it wouldnt me. I wouldnt be intimidated. But i could see maybe somebody be being intimidated. And i also asked some of the folks at the rally about that ban on open carry at the polls. Interestingly, adam who is a militia member says he is not encouraging anyone to bring firearms to voting location and other gibraltar oun owners said were not planning to do so. But there was a consensus that the State Government overreached and that it should be left up to individuals from their perspective. All right. Thank you. And that wraps up this hour for me, ill see you back here tomorrow at 3 00 p. M. Deadline white house is after the break. Deadline white house is after the break. The break. Isnt it time to wipe things clean . Joe biden has led the way, with a bold plan that protects our environment while creating new jobs. And tougher rules for clean air and water.
