President. And 2020 shakeup. Bernie sanders is in. Joining the growing democratic 2020 field. But will he be able to pull the same support this time that he had in 2016 . An awful lot to get to, but we start with the breaking news. A new investigation into one of President Trumps first supporters on the campaign trail and First Advisors in the white house, michael flynn. The House Oversight committee will investigate his role in a plan to transfer Nuclear Technology to saudi arabia. Something that may have broken laws. But investigators fear trump may still be considering it. Flynn has already pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi about his conversations with the Russian Ambassador during the trump transition. He has met with Robert Muellers team 19 times. National security reporter ken delaney is here with these late breaking details, what can you tell us . Reporter whistle blowers from within president Trumps NationalSecurity Council have described fears about the plan to transfer Nuclear Technology to saudi arabia. Theyre saying that mike flynn had a conflict of interest because he had been advising the group. Theyre saying that flynn and others tried to push this plan through and get an order for trump to sign without the required review thats necessary whenever the United States transfers Nuclear Technology to a third country. This was a project that was backed by jack keane, who had been considered by President Trump as secretary of defense. One top official is quoted as saying, this is a scheme for these generals to make money. You know we cannot do this. So career officials are trying to stop this, but the plan went forward anyway. And the report by the House Oversight committee out this hour says that Derrick Harvey was pushing this plan and even presented a draft order for the president to sign that would have been tom berrick a special env envoy. House investigators are saying theyre concerned about, this plan appears to remain on the table, even though mike flynn is long gone and work has seized in the National Security council in this project. They worry President Trump is still considering transferring Nuclear Technology to saudi arabia and theyre concerned that could lead to saudi arabia producing a nuclear weapon, chris. Thank you for this breaking report. I want to bring in matt miller, kimberly adkins, and john meachum, all three msnbc contributors. Matt, so the Oversight Committee reportedly said its investigation of the plan is particularly critical because the administrations efforts to transfer sensitive u. S. Technology to saudi arabia appear to be ongoing. What do you say to the fact that congressional investigators think the administration is still pursuing this deal . There are two things that struck me about kens report. This potentially illegal, if it were to have been executed in the way it was originally planned, managed to hang around the administration for so long. It lasted long past mike flynns resignation and according to the committee maybe even is still alive in some form or fashion today. Thats the first thing. The second thing it reminds me of even if you take away the russia investigation, and everything that bob mueller has found, all the people who have been indicted in that investigation, all the people that have pled guilty, all of the other corruption scandals that surround this president and all the other potential things the House Oversight committee has to probe. There are four cabinet officials who have already had to resign in scandal, a number who are still in scandal and you have other threats like this for them to pull when you look at the way that the Trump Administration has been influenced by foreign powers. And the key thing that struck me in this report is that the House Committee has whistleblowers inside the National Security council. If i were working in the white house and i knew that people inside ingovernmethe government closest to the white house you can get were talking to congression congression congression congressional committees i would be concerned. You can predict what the pushback would be. In other words, this is this administration has perfected its ability to try to discredit every investigation thats touching the Trump Administration and the trump world more broadly. So i think well certainly see that and well probably hear a lot about the deep state because of the whistleblowers that matt was talking about. I think one thing that is striking about this new investigation is that its yet another thread between the Trump Administration and saudi arabia. Weve seen with, for example, the reaction, the very slow reaction to condemn the murder of the Washington Post reporter. The question is why . Is it because President Trump is reluctant to criticize saudi leaders because of his personal business ties . Is it Something Else . Now here is yet another bit of evidence of something going on between the u. S. And saudi arabia. So as these investigations go on we see more dots being created. As i was reading through kens report, we got it a few moments before we went on air. This is the latest in a long line of examples where either not knowing or willfully ignoring what has kept this institution, this democracy going for all these many years, is that there are safeguards in place. And it does seem like that there is if this is so, another instance where those safeguards were not just even thought about. You know, the difference between journalism and history is its an iceberg. History is what you can see below the surface once time passes. Whats interesting is investigations bridge that gap, if you will. They enable us to see more than we can see in a daytoday basis. The National Security council was created in the late 1940s to manage the possibility of manage preventing armageddon, that was the point. It was a cold war institution. Weve seen historically because its an executive arm more so than state department and the pentagon, it can lead president s to great moments of diplomatic breakthroughs, as the end of the cold war under president george h. W. Bush. Or it can lead to freelancing and trouble, which it led under president reagan and iran contra. This feels like the latter than the former. Then you have roger stone, just three days after the judge imposed a limited gag order on him, he posted an instagram picture of the judge with what appeared to be crosshairs of a gun site. He deletes the post and puts it back up without the crosshairs. Then his lawyers enter a court filing apologizing to the court for the improper photograph and comment posted on instagram today. Mr. Stone recognizes the impropriety and had it removed. Just in the last 30 minutes, judge jackson scheduled a hearing for thursday afternoon to discuss why the Media Contact order entered in this case or his conditions of release should not be modified or revoked in light of the posts on his instagram account. What in the world is going on with roger stone . First of all, we ought to say about this post he made yesterday how despicable it really was. There are federal judges who have been assassinateded for their work. Its something the u. S. Marshals takes very seriously. Im sure theyre doing a threat assessment now and trying to decide whether they have to increase security on judge jackson either because all of the attention in this case or at the very least implied threat roger stone made on instagram yesterday. Whats happening now is exactly what roger stones attorneys must have feared when they got him to take down the post and issue the apology to the judge yesterday. She has two things she can do, one is to tighten or revoke his bail and two is to extend the gag order. Right now its a loose gag order from him. Hes free to talk to the press in other form or fashion in any way he wants. What she could do is extend the gag order and give a gag order like the one she imposed in the manafort case that prevents him from talking about the case at all. Clearly his attorneys were worried about this and thats whey they made him apologize yesterday and take the post down. Ive just got handed a statement, jeff bennett, who is one of our white house reporters was in touch with roger stone. He said in a text i will be present for the hearing as ordered, but did not engage when asked by nbc news about his motivations for posting the Instagram Photo in question. And whether hes worried about judge Amy Berman Jackson revoking his release. Your thoughts . Social media has a great deal to offer the world and great deal to take away from it. One of the interesting things about this whole era is going to be to what extent did the culture around President Trump, candidate trump and then President Trump, to what extent was it shaped by technology, to what extent did it shape it . The fact you have someone in this kind of legal jeopardy whos posting Instagram Photos is remarkablremarkable. We would tell our children not to do anything remotely like this. Commonsense i think has to i agree with matt. This is a serious thing. We forget sometimes that it just takes one unstable person to react to a climate of suggestions of violence and extremity of the paranoid style in american politics. We saw it with the mail bombs last year. And history gets changed for the worse by people who are part of a climate and react to a climate of violence. We just need to the president should denounce it. We need to stop doing it. In the meantime, kimberly, youve got the ongoing revelations from andrew mccabe. Today Savannah Guthrie asked mccabe if he had briefed leaders of the socalled gang of eight. That he had opened this counterintelligence investigation into President Trump. Heres what he said. The purpose of the briefing with was to let our congression congression congression congression congressional leadership know what weve been doing. This is a recommendation that chy came to me. I discussed it at length did you Tell Congress . I told congress what we had done. Did anyone object . Thats the important part. No one objected. Not on legal grounds, not on constitutional grounds and not based on the facts. No objections from congressional leaders. Whats your take away . There will be a lot of questions will be asked of the leaders about what they knew about this. And when they knew it. Its a remarkable revelation thats made by andrew mccabe. Hes talking about it now. Its yet again, another dot in this picture thats being painted of the Trump Administration and its reaction to and relationship with federal prosecutors and investigators. Its extraordinary. John, im being told my time is up, but i have to ask you, the president has been punching back about the mccabe interviews. Among the flurry of tweets, plotting a coup and treason. What is your thought about throwing around words of coup and treason . Its part of the sulfurous nature of the era. Treason is a technical definition. Which i dont think the president probably knows. The only thing defined in the constitution quite specifically. Words matter. The tone matters. And Franklin Roosevelt once said the presidency is not primarily an Administrative Office or an engineering office. Its chiefly a place of moral leadership. You help shape the dispositions of heart and minds of the country. The disposition is being shaped for the ill. Busy day, thanks to all of you. Appreciate it. Up next, selling point . The president is using an Emergency Declaration to build the wall. Were sure to hear about it in his campaign rallies. Senator Bernie Sanders is now in. And it is as complicated as it is consequential. Here are the basics. 16 states have filed suit to block the president from spending billions on a wall, arguing congress controls spending. Heres the key section of the lawsuit. Contrary to the will of congress, the president has used the pretext of a manufactured crisis of unlawful immigration to declare a National Emergency and redirect federal dollars appropriated for military construction and Law Enforcement initiatives towards building a wall on the United States. Its worth noting that brandnew poll shows the president is losing in the court of Public Opinion with 61 of voters saying they do not approve of the president s National Emergency. But, of course, the real court fight is just beginning. The Colorado Attorney general, thanks for being with us. I want to make sure people understand this. The lawsuit says the states are going to court to protect their residents, their Natural Resources and their economic interests. So help us understand, for example, in colorado, give us an example of how you argue this is harmful. We have a number of military bases, installations here, take fort carson for example. They have lots of people working there. They have lots of physical imkbrumi improvements. Those are going to be at risk if you move money to build a border wall. That will hurt colorado. The president is pushing back this morning. As i predicted, 16 states led mostly by open border democrats and the radical left have filed a lawsuit in the ninth circuit. He loves to go after the ninth circuit. California, the state that has wasted billions of dollars on their out of control fast train with no hope of completion seems in charge. Open border democrats and the radical left. How do you respond to the president s tweet . I respond by saying this is about the rule of law and preserving our constitutional democracy. In politics, social media tweets can often be part of the game, but, frankly, in a court of law its about your legal filings. Its about the separation of powers, article i of our constitution is clear. Congress has the authority to appropriate funds. If we see a hijacking of our process, were undermined separation of powers. Thats what makes this case so consequential since the seizures case which involved president harry truman. Courts have long ceded to the president on issues of National Security. They are reluctant, as you know, to impose their own judgment about a security threat. So how would you argue against that . The steel seizures case is a good example. Harry truman said it was necessary to steal a steel mill. What was important in that case was congress had not authorized the act. Here, congress not only hasnt authorized the act, congress turned down the request. Thats what makes this case so important. When congress specifically turns down a request, if the president gets to say unilaterally im going to do it weve undermined separation of powers. That is very fabric of our sn constitutional design. Yours is one lawsuit. There are a lot of other ones. The defense secretary is reviewing what he can do, what programs he can cut to make this happen. How quickly could something happen here . Theres likely to be a preliminary injunction that will be round one. This is going to be a multipart effort. There will be appeals and ultimately this is very likely being decided by the u. S. Supreme court. Ive had the chance to work at the u. S. Supreme court for two justi justices. Both care deeply about separation of powers. Its a protection of liberty, its at the very fabric of our democracy. I believe the Supreme Court will side with us in this case. Thank you so much, appreciate it. Pleasure to be here. Bernie sanders, the 2016 runner up officially entering a crowded field of Democratic Candidates for the 2020 president ial nomination. The still registered independent senator from vermont releasing his Campaign Announcement just this morning. Im Bernie Sanders, im running for president. Our campaign is not only about defeating donald trump, the most dangerous president in modern america history. Our campaign is about transforming our country and creating a government based on the principles of economic, social, racial, and environmental justice. Joining me to talk about it is michael steele, Jonathan Capehart and kasie hunt. So we just got confirmation that the Bernie Sanders campaign raced 1 million in the first three and a half hours since his announcement. Are you feeling the burn . What are the chances he wins the nomination . Its getting warmer outside if nothing else. Bernie looked great. He looked good. Sounded a little bit like the old bernie, but with a new kick to it. I think bernie comes into this thing and spices it up. Ive always laughed at the notion that democrats seem to be fixated on age. Age is a number. And the voters clearly yeah, we say that as we get older. Yeah, we do. But, i mean, but bernie proves it. He ran, he ran a spirited campaign, galvanized a lot of youthful voters around him, just like reagan did over 30 years ago. So theres something about the smen messenger and message that transcends those things that limit their capacity to excite voters. The fact hes raised a Million Dollars in three and a half hours speaks a testament that those 2. 5 or one million donors that he has, those individual small donors he has are still largely with him. So well see what happens as this thing begins to unfold. Hey, bernie, welcome to the pool. He said, look, the Democratic Party is following me anyway. He listed the successes of his 2016 campaign. Im going to play that for you. You may recall in 2016, many of the ideas that i talked about, medicare for all, raising the minimum wage to 15 an hour, making public colleges and universities tuition free. All of those ideas people say, oh, bernie theyre so radical. American people wont accept those ideas. Do you know whats happened in over three years . All of those ideas and many more are part of the political mainstream. At least hes right, that theyre part of the political discussion, right . Part of the democratic discussion. And as we watch all of these candidates, many of them touring the key states today, cory bo booker in New Hampshire, joe biden in pennsylvania, but there are differences on things like Free College Education for all. What do you think of bernies chances . How does he separate himself from a pack as opposed to opposition of essentially one, which was Hillary Clinton . Look, i mean, given those fundraising numbers in three hours, his chances are, you know, at this point, pretty damn good. I think the fact that, you know, the party is bernie in 2016 staked out a far left position on a whole lot of issues, which makes it possible for senators klobuch klobuchar, harris, booker, all these other folks to talk about issues that come a little more to the center. But still move the party and the country left of where it was. I think the problem that Bernie Sanders is going to have, its the same one he had in 2016. One, there are a lot of people who are upset that he is going to run for the democratic nomination, but refuses to actually join the Democratic Party. And the second thing is i think this is key in a party where the bedrock of the party is africanamerican voters, and africanamerican women in particular, his inability in 2016 to talk to black people and talk to africanamerican issues that go beyond economic justice, is something that is going to dog him in 2020. He in his interview, chris, he talked about the fact that one of the things he learned was at africanamericans have very serious concerns. Thats an improvement over 2016. How he articulates that in 2020 is going foodetermine whether hes successful this go around. Youre following Kamala Harris in New Hampshire today. I know you just spoke to her. You know whats interesting about Kamala Harris and it Means Nothing who is the early frontrunner is perceived to be. How does she feel about bernie getting in . Youre right that this field is so big, its hard to argue theres any single frontrunner. Kamala harris has certainly made a mark pretty quickly out of the gate. The reality is that she is making a broad based appeal, but shes also talking you can see it in her campaign schedule. You can see it in the messages she delivers on the trail. You can see it in the members of her sorority sitting in the front rows of her events in south carolina. She is appealing to those very voters who were distrustful of b Bernie Sanders. Africanamerican women are the single most demographic in the Democratic Party. Another piece of this is we heard from President Trump in the state of the union, he talked about socialism. Right . Thats a hint as to how hes going to run in 2020 against the Democratic Party. That message is easier against some candidates than others. Bernie sanders selfidentifies as a democratic socialist. Kamala harris was very specific she was not a democratic socialist, shes a democrat. Bernie sanders jumped into the president ial race today. Youve said that you are not a democratic socialist. I am not. Whats the difference between a democrat and a democratic sociali socialist . I support capitalism. In theory its something that requires competition. I strongly believe we need to have medicare for all. And within that system do you think thats socialist or not, medicare for all . No, its about providing healthcare for all people. Its about understanding that access to affordable healthcare should not be a privilege, it should be a right. It should not be a function of how much money you have. So i think its clear that the Democratic Party is going to have to wrestle with this question, which of these policies are socialist, which are not. She couldnt except to say i support capitalism, any specific policy differences between her and Bernie Sanders. I also asked her about Bernie Sanders appeal to voters on racial issues, did he have any problems with africanamerican voters. The answer that i got back was one that tells me that this democratic field is still not ready to go on offense against itself. Theyre still trying to play very nice in the sandbox. Im interested to see how long that can last. It is going to be fascinating. Good to see you, appreciate it. And coming up, a womans best path for making it into the top 1 is wait for it on the other side. The other side but do you take something for your brain. In 2019, 2019, the best way for a woman to enter the 1 of the countrys highest earners is to get married. You heard that right. A new study just published in the american sociological review found that married women are 991 more likely than single women to be in a 1 household. In 2016 that meant making 800 tho thousand dollars a year. Joining me now is one of the authors of that study. So good to talk to you, professor, although this is disheartening to say the least. Whats going on . Why are we still here . Absolutely. So women still face a host of labor market inequalities that theyre underrepresented among top leadership positions where income is very much concentratesconcentrated and in high paying fields. According to research from pugh to your point, only 4. 8 of fortune 500 companies are women. Ultrahigh earning women rely more on entrepreneurship. Theres a strong link between entrepreneurship and 1 status. Women must start a new business if they have any hopes of making it to the 1 on their own. And this is despite the reality that Women Entrepreneurs face a number of different gender based hurdles in gaining Financial Capital, in growing a business that would enable them to have a high income themselves. One of the many stunning statistics from your study, and we mentioned this at the top, is that married women are 991 more likely than single women to be in the 1 household. Married men are 70 more likely to be in the 1 bracket than single men. Why is it important to know that men make more money in 1 households than their wives . This is very important. Theres a host of research that documents that the top 1 have a host of different economic and political advantages. And if womens income is largely inconsequential in the majority of these households, it suggests that men, not women are exercising the vast majority of political and economic influence that we see associated with top 1 households. If you take this down to the basics and we know that women are behind men dollar for dollar across the board earning went to 0. 58 on the dollar if youre hispan hispanic, 80 if youre asian. Given the majority of u. S. Income gains have gone to this top 1 of households and women are such a small part of that group, is there anything predictive from your study for the rest of women out there . And what do we do about this . Absolutely. So the Broader Research suggests weve had seen the least amount of gains at the top. So weve had the most difficulty changing gender norms potentially around top income capitalize. That theyre potentially even more traditional in terms of their arrangements. But there are multiple things i would point to we can do to help eliminate some of these gender dispariti disparities. We need to pass major federal legislation that would jumpstart gender progress. Whether that be gender quotas that would increase the representation of leadership for women, getting basic paid maternity and paternity leave. Also, increasing the access to Financial Capital and bank loans that Women Entrepreneurs have would also enable Women Entrepreneurs to further grow their businesses similar to how men have access to this Financial Capital. We also need to change bias and hostile cultures in high paying male ndominated jobs such as in the finance industry. Its an important study, fascinating as it is disheartening. Maybe it can be a jumping off point for change. Thank you and your coauthor, much appreciated. Absolutely, thanks for having me. Coming up, craig melvin introduces us to one woman who took over the Dallas Mavericks in the middle of a Sexual Harassment scandal. Diversity is being invited to the party but inclusion is being asked to dance. You can be at the table but if you cant talk or people arent including you, so what. We need to address both. Plus, one small step for President Trump, one giant leap for his space force. P for his space force. President trump will sign a directive this afternoon to establish the u. S. Space force. It is to say the least, a controversial idea. When trump first proposed it, lots of members of congress, including members of his own party expressed concerns about cost and redundancy within the Space Command thats part of the air force. So to deal with the concerns, the space force will be structured to be to continue to be part of the air force, not a fully independent department but it will be the first new Military Branch since the air force was created in 1947. We have shocking testimony to tell you about in North Carolina where the state board of elections begins a second day of hearings. Mcray dallas, who is a political operative for republican mark harris is accused of orchestrating, quote, a coordinated unlawful and substantially resourced absentee ballot scheme and arguably the most arguably the most damaging testimony came from dallas own stepdaughter lisa britt. For the absentee ballot requests, were you paid to get absentee ballot requests . Yes, maam. If it was unsealed and the ballot was not completely voted, you would fill in the other officers . Yes, maam. And who would have directed you to do that . We were directed by mr. Dallas. Basically what we would do, what i would do would be to vote whoever was a republican. Mark harris leads democrat dan mccready by 905 votes. The board will decide whether to certify harris as the winner or hold a new election. February is black History Month and this morning were taking a look at a courtside trailblazer. Last year the Dallas Mavericks were under fire for Sexual Harassment in the organization. So owner mark cuban brought in Cynthia Marshall as ceo. Shes set about changing the culture at the mavericks while making history as the first africanamerican female ceo of an nba team. Our craig melvin sat down with her. Reporter youre black history. I didnt know that. I didnt know that until somebody said how is it being like the first africanamerican female ceo of an nba team . I said, i dont believe that. Reporter you didnt believe it . It was 2018. I shouldnt be the first of anything in 2018. How are you doing . Lets do this. Reporter in 2018, Cynthia Marshall became the ceo of the Dallas Mavericks, hired by team owner billionaire businessman mark cuban. He told me he was having a crisis. It was such a sincere, genuine cry for help. Reporter Sports Illustrated exposed accusations all the way up to the ceo who had resigned three years prior. Before taking the job, marshall talked to female employees at the organization. The article described it as a locker room culture. How would you subscridescribe i . I would describe it as a culture that was not friendly to women. It was also a culture, and we dont talk about this, i dont think it was that friendly to people of color in terms of just upward mobility and all that. Reporter over the last year she increased the number of women in management to almost 50 . Diversity is being invited to the party but inclusion is being asked to dance. You can be at the table, but if you cant talk or if people arent including you, so what . So we needed to address both. Reporter marshall grew up in richmond, california. I didnt really know i was poor at the time. I didnt realize even that i lived in the like housing projects. To me it was it was just where i lived. Reporter she says growing up her father was physically abusive, and her parents divorced when she was 15. It was an ugly, violent summer. We had to flee our house. The police took us away that summer. I went back to school, i had a big brace on my nose from when my father had broken my nose over the summer. Reporter through it all her mother pushed education and faith. My mom always told us we could do anything if we focused. She put a math book in one hand and a bible in the other. I ended up getting five full scholarships at the college of my choice. Reporter she chose university of california at berkeley. Is it true you told your husband of 30 years while you guys were in college, ill call you when i graduate, im done with you for now . Well, to quote me, i said, i dont have time for some smooth talking cutie who wants to play when i need to study. I graduated at 2 00 and i called him around 3 00. April 30th we will be married 36 years. Reporter yours has not been a study without heartbreak. No. We had four second trimester miscarriages. And then a daughter who was born four months premature who died at 6 1 2 months old. And so thats how we spent the first ten years of our marriage, just trying to create this family. Not fully realizing and appreciating that the lord had another way to make our family. Reporter they adopted their son anthony. But you didnt stop with one. That would have been normal, stop with one. Of course im this working woman, so i come in late from work, and so my son runs up to me as im coming through the garage door, hes telling me about this little girl they saw on tv.
