Murder. More coasttocoast demonstrations are expected today, day ten of nationwide protests. Day nine was largely peaceful, although there were more arrests across the country. 10,000 people give or take have now been arrested since the unrest broke out. We are live in washington, d. C. As well as right here in new york. To start things off, we want to go to Morgan Chesky who is in minneapolis and well be joined by nbc news justice correspondent Pete Williams. Morgan, set the scene for us a little bit. Lets start with what were expected to hear and see today in minneapolis. Reporter ayman, good morning. Were four hours away from the start of that Memorial Service to be held at North Central university, a Christian School here in minneapolis. A crowd of several hundred expected to attend. This is a private affair, but it will be streamed online, so the entire world can witness the moment as people pay tribute and mourn the loss of george floyd, who died at this very intersection last monday. Of course this site has almost become sacred since then, ayman. Hundreds, thousands coming out day and night to write messages of support, leave flowers behind to mark the importance of this man. The family attorney, benjamin crump, saying earlier today that this service is a chance to celebrate the life of george floyd, but also continue that march towards justice in this case. We saw some of that celebrated yesterday by supporters here when those three Additional Police officers faced those charges for aiding and abetting and those upgraded charges came for Derek Chauvin. In the meantime this is still a place that is drawing people and theyre looking forward to this Memorial Service, the first of three celebrations of George Floyds life. We know that in North Carolina there will be another service near the hometown of george floyd. And then next week on monday in houston, where george grew up and was a star athlete, we know there will be another Memorial Service there followed by a private burial on tuesday. Ayman, as it stands right now, ten days after the loss of george floyd, were seeing what could really be the First Step Towards healing that so many people are still trying to look forward or to cope with, rather, in this tragic loss. Ayman. Morgan, stay with us for a moment. Lets cross over to Pete Williams in washington, d. C. Pete, you heard morgan talk about these additional charges, i should say superseding charges for Derek Chauvin, but new charges against the other three officers. Break that down for us in terms of where the investigation goes from here. Well, the charges against chauvin have been more serious. Its seconddegree murder, which carries a maximum penalty of 40 years under the thirddegree murder charge he was facing the max was 25 years. The theory of the case is now whats called felony murder. The theory of the prosecution is that in the process of using illegal force against george floyd, in essence assaulting him, a murder was resulted. So seconddegree murder is felony murder without intent to commit murder. The other officers are charged with aiding and abetting seconddegree murder. What the charges say is that the person to the right of chauvin there, he watched what was going on, he prevented people from coming in to try to stop chauvin from putting his knee on George Floyds neck. J. Alexander kueng held his back and the other office, thomas lane, held his lane, so held George Floyds legs. Now, under the law in minneapolis in minnesota, people found guilty of aiding and abetting face the same penalty as the principal does, meaning they also could face a maximum of 40 years in prison, although undoubtedly the sentencing guidelines would call for lesser sentences for them. In terms of the investigation, i would guess, ayman, now, this is strictly a guess, that one of the things prosecutors will want to try to do is get one of these other three policemen to agree to plead guilty to reduced charges in return for offering testimony, because it would be useful to the prosecution to have one of them be able to testify into what Derek Chauvin was thinking, saying, whether there were any other things not caught on the body cameras that would be useful in the prosecution of chauvin. I would think the most likely person would be tou thao who was simply standing and watching what was going on. All right, thank you both for starting us off. Just moments ago on capitol hill, Senate Democrats held a moment of silence for eight minutes 46 seconds to remember the life of george floyd. That was the length of time before floyd became unresponsive and died after his neck was pinned down by Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin. Tom cauostello is in washington d. C. And raheema ellis is here. Tom, well begin with you. There were massive protests again in the nations capital. It has become a symbolic focal point with a heavy military presence. How did it all go and what are we expecting to play out today . Reporter yeah, so last night, youre right, we had several thousand people here again on the streets, really right in this general area. Yet again were in front of st. Johns church. Thats the scene of some vandalism a few days ago and the scene where President Trump held that bible. Then across the street is lafayette park. You can see weve only got about a dozen people here now, so a very small presence of protesters. But the video last night does show we had several thousand people here. Before the curfew went into effect at 11 00 last night, it lifted at 6 00 a. M. One thing thats really been bothering some people is there have been people wearing uniforms, tactical uniforms. They appear to be police or military but theres no ins insignia. They may be from the bureau of prisons Rapid Response unit but theres absolutely no confirmation when you look at these people who they are, where they come from and thats got people concerned this is the same kind of scenario that we saw play out when russia invaded crimea with un uniforms and nobody knew where they were from. Thats just people voicing concerns about people on the streets, Tactical Units without any insignia. Let me walk over here ever so slightly and i want to show you, this is the hay adams hotel. All the power brokers come here, they have lunch here, and it was also vandalized. They have now started washing off the graffiti that was on the walls. Just three minutes ago. You can see that the wall is wet. Just minutes ago a d. C. Public works crew came along and power washed off the graffiti, but the walls rather the windows are still boarded up as we wait for really the developments of the day. Ive got to tell you, the mood here right now, ayman, is a very peaceful city, a very hot city today and humid waiting for these various Memorial Services to play out. Ayman. I was going to say, tom, that point you brought up about those unmarked members of the paramilitary or law and order there, its scary because of the accountability issue if in fact they do something wrong. A lot of the protesters, they dont know who to hold accountable so i think thats why a lot of the activists and protesters are demanding to know whos on the streets policing those demonstrations. Tom costello in d. C. , thank you for that. Stay with us. Lets cross over to rehema ellis. Right around the corner in midtown new york. It seems so far that the 8 00 p. M. Kcurfew is actually being followed and actually keeping incidents to a minimum. Reporter that does appear to be the case, ayman. A lot of stores here in midtown like this one behind me are still boarded up, but the police are saying for the most part i think what they were doing last night was effective. There were about 180 arrests of people last night as authorities were enforcing the curfew thank you point out had been moved down from 11 00 to 8 00. I could also mention as a result of authorities out in brooklyn area, some police were out on the streets trying to prevent any potential looting from happening. An officer was stabbed. Two other officers were also injured. A suspect was shot some 20 times. Earlier he had been listed in critical condition. They are investigating what exactly was that all about, its not clear. But they do say while there was a scuffle of some people, again as i mentioned about 180 people arrested in the scuffle, Authorities Say for the most part they were able to keep the peace. During the day when there were protests, people were very peaceful and thats been the character of this. People are peaceful during the day and sometimes it ramps up at night. But later today, in remembrance of george floyd, his brother terrance, who lives in brooklyn, will have a Service Starting in brooklyn coming here and hopes thats peaceful too. Thank you both for joining us this hour. Of course on thursday. That 1. 9 million figure you just mentioned important in its own way. You look at everything altogether. You and i have been doing this grim ritual for 11 weeks. Thats when we first saw that really steep decline in employment in this country. An aggregate 42. 5 Million People out of work as a result of the pandemic and now the unrest that weve seen since. If theres any bright spot to this, its that weve seen declines nine straight weeks now. Youll remember in march it peaked at 6. 9 million jobs lost, last week it was 2. 1 million. So its coming down and that gives economists some grounds for optimism here. They think that maybe things are turning around as the country begins to open up a little bit. There are concerns about two waves here. There is the second wave of a virus coming to pass. A lot of epidemiologists talking about that, particularly in the context of the protest weve been seeing, but also a second wave of layoffs. How Long Companies that kept employees on their books will be able to keep them there as this continues. Thats what economists are focused on. The biggest number were looking at comes out tomorrow. Thats unemployment data for the month of may. An Unemployment Rate of 19. 8 and that is something we havent seen since world war ii, putting into focus here just how bad things are when it comes to the labor picture. Just to say lastly here, this is complementary to what were talking about with the protests in this country. We know now that less than half of black adults in this country are out of work, truly a staggering figure. Its staggering and its become a grim ritual every thursday morning when we got that data. David gura, thanks for that update. Right now in brunswick, georgia, the three men charged in the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery are appearing Via Video Conference for the first court appearance. Their preliminary hearing will establish whether or not the state has enough evidence to go ahead to trial. Now, the three men who are all white are charged with murdering the 25yearold black man after chasing him down back in february. All the men have pleaded not guilty, saying they thought arbery was a suspect in a string of recent breakins. Well keep you updated on the latest developments throughout the course of the hour. Still ahead, President Trumps former defense secretary, james mattis, breaking his silence after three and a half years saying he is a threat, saying that President Trump is a threat to the constitution in a stunning new interview. Next, the fallout and how the president is reacting today. This morning extraordinary statements by both the current and former Trump Administration defense secretaries rocking the white house. General james mattis, who resigned in december 2018 over President Trumps syria policy describing the president as a threat to the constitution in a new article in the atlantic writing this of the oath he took upon joining the marine corps. Never did i dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional Rights of their fellow citizens, much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander in chief with military leadership standing alongside. Also calling the moment an abuse of executive authority and taking issue with current defense secretary mark espers reference to u. S. Soil as the battle space. Now, esper tried to walk that back a little bit yesterday. Esper also saying he would not support invoking the insurrection act and then deciding to send some troops that were deployed to d. C. Back home. He later reversed that decision after a meeting at the white house. Joining me now is the washington posts White House Bureau chief Philip Rucker and msnbc political analyst and author of a very stable genius, donald j. Trumps testing of america. Seems an appropriate title for whats happening right now, phil. Let me get your thoughts on this remarkable portion of jim mattis interview with the atlantic. He said donald trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the america people, does not even pretend to try. Instead he tries to divide us. I know youve covered jim mattis for years. This is a pretty incredible and significant shift in tone from a former defense secretary who when he was promoting his book did not want to speak critical of the president when he was on the book tour. Ayman, its extraordinary. General mattis has been asked ever since leaving the white house to weigh in on his experience and to render some sort of assessment of President Trumps leadership and he has kept his mouth shut until now. In fact he indicated he was unlikely to comment on trumps leadership until after the president is no longer in office out of respect for the office. But that seems to have ended this week, obviously. And the statement from mattis last night was extraordinary for a couple of reasons. It wasnt only a reaction to what we saw play out monday in Lafayette Square, but it was a condemnation of three years of leadership of President Trump. Mattis points out that trump has spent three years deliberately trying to divide this country and is a threat to the country that he was elected to protect and to serve. We should also point out mattis is one of the most revered figures in the military and certainly was the most respected and revered figure in the trump cabinet in those first two years when he served, so his words carry an awful lot of weight and its one of the reasons why the president has been so rattled by these comments and weve seen that on twitter with the way he tried to attack mattis and respond. You just brought up that interesting point about how the president responded. You know, i think everyone who was watching that was expecting it to happen at any given point. Yeah. Essentially the president claiming that he fired him, that he fired mattis in that tweet that you see there on your screen. What are your sources telling you about how that played out in the white house . What are you hearing . The president is probably very agitated by the fact that jim mattis, one of the more respected figures in this administration at one point, he was referred to as the adult in the room, was now criticizing this president . First of all, the president s tweet is not true. He did not fire mattis. Mattis resigned in protest of the president s decision on syria. The president later made him leave two months ahead of time, but that was not a firing of mattis, as trump put it on twitter. But the big picture here, trump is upset by this in part because mattis is a revered general and somebody that trump has praised repeatedly. Trump was so proud that he could convince mattis to come join him in the administration. I remember that rally during the transition back in late 2016 when trump announced with real glee that he had recruited mattis to be the defense secretary. He bragged about mattis nickname, mad dog which mattis didnt really like but it spoke to the strength and power that mattis showed. Trump even said that mattis was the closest thing the military had to a general George Patton and yet a complete turn of events now in how trump used mattis and its simply because mattis is speaking truth to power and has decided to come forward to the public with what he really thinks of this president and commander in chief. What are you hearing about mark esper saying he doesnt support the insurrection act. What is reporting telling you about whats going on with that . Esper is dangling by a thread. It was noteworthy yesterday when the White House Press secretary asked whether the president has confidence in esper just said stay tuned for any updates from the president about whether he is the secretary of defense much longer. So that was not a ringing endorsement of the defense secretary and an indication that the president has been quite bothered by esper speaking out yesterday. Phil rucker, thank you very much for joining us this hour. Always appreciate your reporting. Lets bring in former nato supreme allied commander admiral james stavridis. Admiral, its great to talk to you. Thank you very much for joining us. Lets talk a little bit about how significant what we are seeing play out in realtime with both the statement by jim mattis, now saying that his own former boss has been trying to divide us for three years. Well, first and foremost, i appreciate general mattis coming out and speaking publicly. There are going to be those who say why not after charlottesville, why not after helsink helsinki, but its good to have him in this conversation because its time that those of us who are retired military have this voice that our active duty military do not. As phil rucker told you a moment ago, ive known general mattis for decades. He is a good friend. He is a very, very High Integrity individual. I think he just hit the boiling point here. Im glad this moment has come for him to step up. You wrote a very powerful sentence, i think, in this oped that i want to read to our viewers. You say that we cannot afford to have a future Lafayette Square end up looking like tiananmen square. I think a lot of people would be very scared to think that would happen in the United States but we are seeing this standoff with the military and the National Guard and now these forces without any insignia on the streets pushing back protesters. Talk to us a little bit about that concern that you have. Indeed. Lets kind of do the numbers for a moment here. We have about a million Law Enforcement officials in this country. We also have 500,000 members of the National Guard. These are troops who are trained to participate in activities involving all the things were seeing now, civil disturbances, humanitarian relief. These are citizen soldiers that consistently operate under the code of u. S. Law. They understand what it means to be a civilian, then to put on that uniform and come in in a situation like this, so thats 1. 5 Million People who are capable of responding. What is at issue here and what has concerned general mattis, myself, admiral mullen and others is taking active duty troops, those who operate under the laws of war, those who have deployed as you and i have discussed so many times, ayman, to afghanistan, to iraq, and bringing those troops with those kind of sensibilities suddenly into a domestic disturbances and particularly using them against Peaceful Protesters. This is what our Founding Fathers were deeply concerned about is the use of armed forces against our population. They saw the british do it against then british citizens. Those pictures that youre showing of troops guarding the lincoln memorial. Dont worry about what i think about that. What would Abraham Lincoln think in this moment . Its really time that we said no, our active duty forces should not be employed in a situation to crush Peaceful Protesters. That was certainly a point that was advocated by senator tom cotton in a New York Times oped favoring bringing in the troops. I understand the position of jim mattis and others who are trying to say you cannot allow this to happen. But the real question for protesters is how. How do you not allow this to happen . Sure, the ultimate accountability may come in november when they have the ability to vote out the current president , but between now and november what does that accountability look like when you dont even know who are some of the people patrolling the streets . Yeah, this is the right question. And i found a new level of concern when i saw essentially unmarked uniforms, evidently part of the police and prison system, coming into this equation. We have got to do exactly what you and i are doing right now. We have to look to the media to illuminate the situation. We need to look to the congress, both republicans and democrats, to say we cannot override fundamental civil rights in this country, particularly with our armed forces. And number three, all of us must give voice to this at whatever level from the small meetings in towns and conversations we have to big National Media events, those of us who have these conversations have that obligation. Very important conversation we must maintain. Admiral, always a pleasure, sir, thank you for joining us this hour. Thank you. The first Memorial Service for george floyd set to begin at North Central university in minneapolis just a few short hours from now. Next, one of the organizers for the protests in that city on what happens next now that all four officers involved in floyds death have been charged. I recommend nature made vitamins. This afternoon hundreds if not thousands are expected to gather at two separate Memorial Services to honor the life of george floyd. In brooklyn a Prayer Service will be led by floyds brother followed by a march across the brooklyn bridge. At the same time in minneapolis family and friends will hold a private memorial there. In fact the reverend al sharpton will be giving the eulogy. While hundreds plan to be outside the service to pay their respects. It comes one day after new charges were announced in floyds case. Now all four minneapolis officers that were involved in his death are in Police Custody and all are facing murder charges. Floyds family seeing this as another step forward, including his son, quincy, who for the first time visited the site where his father was pinned to the ground. I am happy that all the officers have been arrested. My father should not have been killed like this. We deserve justice. Lets go now to nbcs Gabe Gutierrez in minneapolis. Gabe, good to talk to you. I know youve been reporting on this for a couple of days. A very powerful interview there with some that were paying their respects. What can we expect there today . Whats the reaction on the ground to these new charges . Reporter hi there, ayman, good morning. This is the site where quincy visited yesterday to pay his respects to his father. Family members are expected at that Memorial Service this afternoon, very highly anticipated. As you mentioned reverend al is expected to give the eulogy there and hes expected to call for federal legislation that will help stop Racial Injustice in policing. Ayman, i want to introduce you to a man i just met and his daughter here, coming here for the first time. As we just spoke with them, very emotional, hes from this area. His name is carlos jackson. Hi, carlos. And his daughter myesha right here. Carlos, thank you for speaking with us, we appreciate it. We couldnt help but notice you here and its a difficult time for you. What do you think when you look at that memorial and you think of george floyd . Its just a reminder to me of something thats just been going on repetitively in america since weve been here. It just reminds me again of Philando Casteel and i just hope theres rumors of the officer having hidden agendas, that he might have known him personally. You know, he might have had a personal agenda to harm him with intent. I hope those rumors arent true or whatever. You were telling me that youre from this neighborhood. You live in st. Paul, right . Yes. It must be very tough to come back and see this happened not far from where you grew up. I grew up able to enjoy the twin cities, st. Paul and minneapolis, and its very hurtful to see my city boarded up like detroit, michigan, because the whole city is affected by this. The whole entire twin cities is affected by this. The suburbs is affected by this. Everyone is trying to assert that their race is more dominant than the next person or whatever. What they need to understand is every time we say that, we decrease the value of our race. The more important race there is of all kind is the human race, period, point blank, period. When you look at whats happened around the country and really around the world after this death, what goes through your head . Hurt, a lot of hurt. I dont know what the solution is, but i know that yesterdays answers was for yesterdays questions. Yesterdays solutions was for yesterdays problems. Were going to have to accept today. Reporter carlos, i was here yesterday when there were protesters here and they got the first word of those new charges in this case. What did you think when you heard that that charge had been upgraded from third to seconddegree murder for one of the officers and that the other three officers have been charged with aiding and abetting murder. What did that mean to you . It meant a lot. It meant a lot. Id like to publicly say and id like to applaud the Minneapolis Police chief for doing the actions that he did. I know he went against the grain. I know theres others that didnt support you on that and im happy that it went viral because in actuality, lets be truthful about it or whatever. If it didnt go viral and you fired that guy, you would be the guy in trouble. Being it went viral, whatever now, youre the good guy or whatever and im happy that you did your action because you did your job as a Police Officer and we appreciate you. If no one else said that to you, i would like to publicly say wed like to thank you for that, officer. Thank you for speaking to us. I know its so emotional. I cannot thank you enough for sharing this moment with us. I know your daughter is here and i want to know if you have anything else that you want to say about this moment and the emotion that has overcome your dad and how important it is for you to be here. Its important for me to be here because seeing this change happen, seeing a real revolution actually come through and support and the Community Come together, all cities, the whole state of minnesota coming together just to get justice, just to say that we are all one, because weve never been a b, weve always been one. So just to see this come together and see us fight together as a community, no matter what color we are, green, blue, purple, whatever color we are, whatever anything we are, just to see us come together and fight and even when were destroyed, board up, get back together, regroup, as long as were back together its a beautiful sight. Reporter thank you for speaking with us. Carlos, i cannot thank you enough for talking with us. Ayman, as you can see, some raw emotions as we get these reactions and we anticipate this Memorial Service here this afternoon here in minneapolis. Gabe gutierrez, thank you very much for that very powerful interview. Please give our best to carlos for his very thoughtful and poignant words. Youre seeing live pictures right now from minneapolis. The hearse is arriving to that Memorial Service. It is 9 37 a. M. Out there in minneapolis. You can see the Memorial Service will get under way in a few hours. Well bring that to you live. Youre seeing the hearse there carrying the body of the late george floyd arriving to that university there where the service will be held. Joining me now is keith mays, professor of africanamerican and African Studies at the university of minnesota and mike griffin, an activist and senior organizer with Community Change action. He has been organizing protests there in minneapolis. Mike, let me begin with you and i want to start by playing what the floyd family attorney, ben crump, said this morning. Take a listen. Do you think we would have seen that without the protest . Do you think that the protest led to the charges . Well, based on the precedents with eric garner and so many others, no, i dont think we would have saw those charges. So as someone who has been leading on the front lines these protests, talk to us a little bit about if you think these protests have led to those charges. Absolutely. These protests have been overwhelmingly successful in bringing charges to these officers. We can just look at the history here in minneapolis. To mark clark six years ago, those cops werent even charged. The Philando Casteel case that cop was charged but founding not guilty. We have been beating a drum beat for the better part of ten years trying to rein in the overexcess police force. We know that george floyd should be alive right now today and the reason he is dead is because of the overaggression racist Minneapolis Police that need to be reined in. So we are thankful for those officers got charged. We know it was because of the thousands and thousands of people that have been protesting in the streets. In order for this not to keep going, for three months, six months, a year from now, that theres not the next george floyd, we need to change the systemic problems in this country, so we need to keep the pressure on out in these streets. We need to stay protesting and im happy to keep doing that this weekend and over the next week. Some of the changes were talking about and a lot of people have said need to take place, theyre not going to happen as a result of one Police Department changing a policy. Youre talking about something that is systematic and requires a lot of legislation. How do you convert this kentuin energy of street protests to actual changes in legislation beyond just one or two Police Departments . You asked this question in the washington post. You write will George Floyds case be different . Well, time will tell. As mike said, i think that this is just the beginning of a long road that we have to travel to go and convert street protests and demonstrations to Public Policy is going to take a lot of work, is going to involve a lot of people. This is just the first step. Yes, i talk about, and mike just said it, in the flaphilando casl case we were able to have the officer charged but he was acquitted by a jury. So, yes, we can have officers arrested and charged, but to get a prosecution, a conviction and then a sentence is extremely difficult. Its an uphill battle. This is only the beginning. So i agree with mike. This will continue through the summer all the way up to the fall, up until election day. And i predict im not in the prediction business, im a historian. I study the past for us to understand the present. But i predict on election day, black voters will turn out in 2008 obama level numbers to send donald trump and the Republican Party a message that this is a new day. And i also predict that on november 4th, the day after the election day, will mark the beginning of the end of the Republican Party. It will go the way of the wig party in the 1850s, mark my word. So as a historian, and that is a pretty bold statement, as a historian i wanted to get your thoughts from we just heard from that gentleman, the emotional testimony from the gentleman at the site of that memorial talking about you cant solve yesterdays problems with yesterdays questions. Carlos talking about that. What is the question we need to be asking ourselves today Going Forward . Keith . I think to listen to brother carlos on the street, i mean this is a day of memory. We are memorializing the life and the legacy of george floyd. And what you heard from him was anguish, was sorrow, was grief. But make no mistake about it, that Kinetic Energy or potential energy will be converted to Kinetic Energy as we move forward in the next few weeks and into the next few months into the fall. I think that we will convert the anguish and the sorrow, like weve always done in the black freedom struggle, to collective action. We can see across the country there are more people joining public demonstrations. There are people who probably have never been out in the streets publicly demonstrating for anything, protesting for anything, ayman. I think that we will see this momentum build all the way through up to election day. Mike, let me get your final thoughts on this. Youre expected to attend the Memorial Service there. I hate to say it, but by definition, memorials and funerals, they essentially mark the end of something, the end of a life. But how do you use this moment, the end of this life, to start making a new point Going Forward . We need to continue to be out there protesting. We need to continue to be out there organizing. Like my brother keith just said, were going to be voting in massive numbers this year. In minneapolis were spending 200 million in a year, one calendar year, we spent 200 million on the police force. What about Affordable Housing or making sure everyone makes a living wage. We need to invest in this country and thats a fight were going to keep in this city and this state up and through the november election. Mike, keith, it is an honor and pleasure to speak to both of you. Thank you for giving us your insights this hour. Stay safe. The u. S. The Surgeon General saying theres every reason to expect new clusters and new outbreaks, while emphasizing there are Public Health consequences of institutional racism as well. For many of those tired of living in fear, a call to action. They say transcends the risk of covid transmission. I want to bring in an Emergency Room Physician in new york and yahoo news medical contributor. Its good to have you with us as always. It may be a few more weeks before we see the impact of what plays out after George Floyds death, but at this point are you concerned and have you seen any difference in your emergency room in new york . So, first of all, its way too soon to see the effects of these protests on an increased number of cases. Any increase were seeing now is a result of the decrease in social distancing in states that were opening up two or three weeks ago. What i know is in my local community in new york city, a lot of the people protesting are doing so with Public Health metrics in place looking to use Hand Sanitizer and masks if possible. Weve seen there are ways to support protesters and also support Public Health. Those are the things we need to talk about as we go forward knowing the protests are going to happen and why theyre happening to make sure we decrease the total number of cases that will come out of events like this. Doctor, im sure a lot of people have made the decision that they have to take to the streets and take that risk of what we know about the spread of the virus. You tweeted this out. Systemic racism is a Public Health crisis. So for people who are getting out there, what health tips would you give them to keep the risk of transmission as low as possible . So i think this is a partnership between the protesters and the local Law Enforcement. Protesters themselves can march with people they know, people they have come in contact with regularly and stay in closeknit groups wearing a mask, also use Hand Sanitizer and other metrics to keep things clean. Wear goggles. Break resistant goggles can help. Local Law Enforcement can help by stopping to use chemical irritants that promote coughing as were close together. They can stop arresting people decrease the number of arrests and shorten the duration that theyre in close quarters if theyre in a van going to be booked or in a jail. Theres a lot of steps that we can take together as a community to promote peaceful protests in this time of a pandemic. Also making sure that we decrease the transmission. The last thing i will say is making sure that testing is available to the communities that are protesting. So if you have been protesting and you think theres a chance that you may have been exposed or are symptomatic, please go get tested and stay home for a day or two just to make sure youre not going to put anybody else at risk. I was on the streets in philadelphia earlier this week and i noticed as Police Arrested some of those protesters, they were putting them in a big school bus and i was thinking to myself probably not a good idea if those police were trying to also make sure the spread of the virus does not get accelerated. Doctor, thank you for putting a spotlight on that. I appreciate your time. For the First Time Since George Floyds death we are hearing from former president barack obama, the nations 44th president , speaking wednesday during an online roundtable and voicing support of Peaceful Protesters who are demanding Police Reform while highlighting this country was founded on protests. Take a listen to part of what he said about where the u. S. Is as a nation. This is a moment, and weve had moments like this before, where people are paying attention. And that doesnt mean that everything will get solved, and so dont get disenheartened because its a marathon and not a sprint. But the fact that people are paying attention provides an opportunity to educate, activate, mobilize and act. And i hope that we are able to seize this moment. Joining me now is rashad robinson, president of color of change. He participated in wednesdays town hall with president obama. Rashad, its great to have you with us. Im curious to get your thoughts. For a man who has spent most of his postpresident ial career being nonpolitical to some fault in the eyes of some, what does it say that president obama chose this moment to Say Something . All right. It looks like we may have lost our signal there with rashad robinson. Well try to reestablish that and bring that back to you as soon as we can. Were going to take a quick break and well be right back after this commercial. Well be after this commercial. This moment right now. This is our commencement. No, well not get a diploma or a degree of any kind. But we are entering a new chapter in our lives. Our confidence is shaken; our hearts cracked. The kind of a crack that comes from the loss of a job; from life plans falling apart. We didnt ask for it. But we are rising to meet it. And how far weve come isnt even close to how far we can go. We just have to remember how patient we were. How strong we can be. how strong you can be. and remember this; theres a crack in everything for a reason. How else can the light get in . Tomorrow starts today. That go out today get delivered. There are people who can only get food from amazon. When you come into work, thats what drives you. My little one, i would say hes definitely proud of me. Every time he sees the blue prime trucks, he says, daddy, theres your people i know every single one of us is here busting as hard as we can go every day to make sure these packages get delivered. Weve reestablished our connection with rashad robinson. He participated in wednesdays town hall with president obama. Im glad to see you reconnected. And not frozen. Lets pick up really quickly on the question i just asked you about president obama because to some degree hes remained very apolitical since leaving office but he chose this moment to Say Something. What does that tell you . I think its important. I think like all americans, Many Americans i should say, he is seeing whats happening in this country, hes seeing the tremendous outpouring of people speaking out and recognizing, i think like many of us, that this is an Inflection Point. An Inflection Point to have the opportunity to make us kind of go forward or the potential for us to fall backwards. And we need to do everything in this moment to ensure that we channel all this imagery into both justice for people and for families and for the individuals who have been harmed but also the longterm systemic change. Undoing all the policies and the practices that have stood in the way of progress for far too long both at the local and national level, and so opening up his platform to activists who have been fighting for this and providing sort of a new understanding of where were at and where we need to go is important. So one of the things on the streets of philadelphia and speaking to activists that i learned about was the power of Police Unions in this country. Towards the end of the panel, president obama mentioned when he was in state legislation, the only way that he was able to pass a law about racial profiling and traffic stops was from the support of the fraternal order of police. I think a lot of people in this country who want Police Reform are asking how can people hold Police Unions accountable as lawmakers try to make this change. We need lawmakers to stand up to fraternal order of police and policeonly unions. They have been absolutely destructive to any type of progress that we can have on safety and justice in this country. I remember sitting in the white house meeting during the obama years and talking about racial profiling and having one of the leaders of the fraternal order of police look me dead in my face and say all of this talk of racial profiling is new to me. And when he said it was new to him, its one thing when someone says i dont believe in your sort of list of demands. I dont think that those are the sort of best ways to move us forward. Its another thing when someone looks you in your eye and gaslights you and tells that you that the problem that all the facts and the data tell you exists simply doesnt exist. Weve had fraternal order of police consistently stand up for killer cops, right . When the killer cop of tamir rice, 12yearold tamir rice was fired by the Police Department, he then goes someplace else and gets hired. Chokeholds get banned in departments and then Police Officers use them and the fraternal order of police steps in and defends it. Weve watched fraternal order of Police Leaders say some of the most horrific and racist things. As you read them, you have to imagine what era are these people in. We need folks who are going to be honest about working towards real change. When we have institutions that are supposed to represent people serving the public, that peel like they have to report to no one and have to never have to come to the table with change, then we have to work around those folks. We cant simply continue to come to the table with people who have no interest in being at the table. All right, rashad robinson, thank you very much for joining us and giving us that perspective. I appreciate your time. Im sure well be having this conversation in the weeks and months ahead. Were going to have the Memorial Service for you coming up in a few hours from now. Its important to note that we are expected to see reverend al sharpton deliver the eulogy. We saw a short while ago the body of george floyd, the hearse, arriving there. Crowds already starting to gather. We had an emotional interview there with one of the attendees expected to participate in that Memorial Service, so well have a lot more coverage for you right here on msnbc. Thank you very much for watching this hour. Im ayman mohyeldin. More news with my colleague, craig melvin, who is live in minneapolis, right now. And a good monday excuse me, a good thursday morning to you. Craig melvin here in minneapolis, minnesota, where as ayman just mentioned a couple of hours from now George Floyds family will be holding a Memorial Service just behind me. A few moments ago standing here and watched the hearse carrying floyds body arrive ahead of the ceremony. Today of course will be the first of multiple services being held to honor his memory before he is laid to rest in houston, texas, his hometown. Meanwhile as we get ready for the service here, we continue to keep a watchful eye on thousands of americans who continue to peacefully protest in his honor. Coming together to seek justice, pushing for change. Today those protesters and George Floyds family are another step closer to seeing some sort of justice. All four officers involved in his death are now facing charges. Three of them are scheduled to appear in court at around the same time of todays Memorial Service. The officer who had his knee on floyds neck is now facing a more serious charge, seconddegree murder. Weve got our corresponde
