Lets crack it open beginning today with four more women coming forward to accuse Senate Candidate roy moore of unwanted sexual advances. The details are so bizarre and stunning. One woman says moore called her on the phone out of her High School Trigonometry Class to ask her on a date. Another says he told her he dated teenage girls, quote, all the time. And to be clear, roy moore has denied any Sexual Misconduct. Youre in luck because i have a great panel to break it down starting in alabama where nbcs Vaughn Hilliard is in montgomery and beth is in gadsden. Shes an Investigative Reporter for the Washington Post. She spoke to two of the accusers. Beth, stunning detailed responsible reporting on your part. For you, the Common Thread in these stories and a number of others is the gadsden mall. What have they told you . So weve talked to at least a dozen women and some men who worked at the mall in the late 70s, early 80s or spent time there and they tell us that roy moore who was at that time in his early 30s and an assistant District Attorney was a regular, that especially on friday and saturday nights, you know, he could be seen walking through the mall and frequently chatting up teenage or, you know, young women who were working there at, you know, jewelry counters and a photo booth and in sears and throughout the mall. All right, i need to read a part of your piece that stood out to me. Jenna richardson was summoned to the Principals Office over the intercom in her classroom. She had a phone call where she said, i said hello, richardson recalls, and the male on the other hand said, jenna, this is roy moore, i was like, what. He said what are you doing, and i said, im in trigonometry class. So while roy moore can say he didnt have there wasnt any Sexual Misconduct, how could he possibly say he didnt know how young these girls were . He call heard while she was in trig class. The only thing worse than being in trig class is getting called out to talk to roy moore on the phone. Right, so she, you know, was equally as astonished. She thought it was her father calling her, some kind of emergency possibly. And so, you know, she describes getting that phone call and feeling like everyone in the office was staring at her. She went back to class and told her friend, kala mclaughlin, who is also quoted in the story, corroborating her account. This is stunning. Vaughn, i want you to weigh in. Tell us about the political fallout here. Republicans in alabama, what are they saying . Because weve heard this, this is capitol hill, we know our guy, but were talking about people in alabama who he had these encounters with at the gadsden mall, so youve got locals saying he did it. Also on top of that, he has alabama gop behind him. Last night the 21member committee met in birmingham to decide whether they would ultimately continue to vote moores candidacy. After about a twohour meeting last night, they didnt even take up a vote. Theyre sticking with their man. Theyre saying theyre going to see it through until december 12th. To gv you an idea, to give you an idea, while this meeting was going on is while aol came out with their story about those two accusers. When the Washington Post story came out, to give this the time line in which the freneticness in which everything was moving here. Roy moore was at a private fundraiser when beths story came out. Our camera caught him on the way out of there. This is a man that is being outspent right now 111 by a democrat in alabama. This is stunning. Megan murphy, the editor of Bloomberg Business week. And Brett Stevens, an oped columnist for the New York Times and msnbc political contributor. I want to read another account from one of the accusers who worked in a restaurant and when roy moore asked her out, she said, do you know how old i am, and he said, yeah, i go out with girls your age all the time. Now, were hearing these stories over and over. Yet roy moores camp is going to say wheres the evidence . Well, roy moores camp has only specifically asked for one piece of evidence and what we heard yesterday in a Bizarre Press Conference was release the yearbook. Thats where were at with this debate. It isnt even really a debate. Theres no question theres a pattern of conduct thats been established. Both senior gop leaders have admitted theres a pattern of conduct. Heres where i want to take this. You now have a situation where we have so little control over the party that the Republican Party cannot essentially get this get him to step out of the race. Where the president , given his own personal conduct, has not even addressed this issue, has not stepped forward and weighed in now on what is nine women who have come forward with credible allegations deeply detailed reporting from beth and others, thank you so much, again, journalism, for exposing this conduct, and we have a president who fails to comment on it and we have a Republican Party who cannot get a candidate like this. A candidate who held views which are an anthima to a humage partf the public. This is where were at with the Republican Party in 2017. Thats exactly it, because so many of my fellow conservatives have been living in an echo chamber and theyve persuaded themselves that anything thats published in the Washington Post, the New York Times, mainstream media, on nbc, is fake, its almost ipso facto fake. Theyve built guardrails for themselves against what the rest of us call reality. And as the movie has it, reality bites. Many say, is that exactly how we want to represent ourselves . This is such a weird inversion. Were here in this den of sinfulness known as manhattan looking at what is happening in alabama, heart of the bible country, with horror, because a predator who preys on teenage girls not much older than my daughter may yet get elected as senator. And were supposed to be the immoral ones here . Okay, i want to talk about another part of his defense, specifically Beverly Nelson who by the way was a trump supporter. Moores Campaign Said she didnt bring up these allegations when he presided over her divorce case and his attorney, as we mentioned, is questioning this yearbook. For real, what is she possibly going to say to the judge presiding over her divorce case . But listen to this. We demand that you immediately release the yearbook to a neutral cuss sttodian, so our expert, you can send your expert as well, so our expert can look at it, not a copy on the internet, the actual document so we can see the lettering, we can see the ink on the page, we can see the indentations and we can see how old is that ink. Is it 40 years old or is it a week old . Is that enough to keep his campaign afloat . Of course its not. This is embarrassing. Its ludicrous. This is not just one piece of give me the yearbook so i can check the indentationings. Really, thats where were at with this . Lets talk about that girl you called out of trig class. Lets talk about people who are saying many people in the town by the way, not just women who said you had established pattern of behavior of circling around this mall on friday and saturday nights. By the way intellectually, but guess what look, lies are right. Yeah, they do. This is the trump method. If youre accused of lie, just say your accusers are telling theyre bigger liars. Or bring up a distraction. Its like a ur ran yanium one s. Theres cultural here that goes beyond the particulars of moores case. This is a state that feels the rest of the country is looking down its noses at them. You cant deny, that was a large part of trumps space, a feeling of deep cultural resentment against elites who kept saying we know better than you and we are better than you. And theres a risk i would not be surprised if roy moore ends up being the next senator from alabama. I agree, theres no question thats a factor in it. Look at the poll shift weve seen, doug jones up in some of these we said that after the access Hollywood Tape, but this antiestablishment force in this country right now is so strong and it is so proud that it helped donald trump win, and it could do the same thing here. You and i dont disagree about the force of that. I think we all agreel that people know the difference between antiestablishment and a clear child predator. Lets not undercount the people of alabama. This is their race. This is their state. They know exactly whats going on there. They know the rumors. I believe they will look at these allegations, look at these women, hear their stories and make the right choice. I was saying that in october of 2016. We all were. All right, well, yesterday, i called ivanka trump out for days saying where are you, youve said nothing. And she did say yesterday theres a special place in hell for people who prey on children. First, President Trump is headed to capitol hill in just a few hours to meet with the House Republican conference. The house is set to vote on its version of the bill later today. The Senate Finance committee will meet at the top of the hour to mark up its version of the bill after an interesting provision i would say to repeal obamacares individual mandate. Theyre getting some major pushback from within their own party. Wisconsin ron johnson is the first republican senator to announce he is personally against the senate bill as stands. Lets go live to capitol hill and msnbcs garrett haake. What do we expect in this meeting . The president will be in this room where im standing now for whats basically going to be a pep rally later this morning before the house votes on their version of the tax bill. Theres not a lot of drama left here on the house side. Leaders expect this bill will pass. The margin is a little bit up in the air. But some of those republicans from hightax states like new york and new jersey will probably vote against it, not enough to stop it. This will be celebratory before the big vote this afternoon. On the senate side, why is republican senator ron johnson against the bill . So this is interesting, all of our eyes are on the individual mandate part of this yesterday, but ron johnsons complai complaint, its a little wonky but basically boils down to the tax cuts for businesses he says arent fair to Small Businesses. Theyre too generous to corporations and not generous enough to pass through small companies, people who file their businesses on their owe taxes. But when we talked to him last night, he was still marginally optimistic he would get to a yes vote if these concerns are dealt with. Take a listen. I wouldnt vote for this senate version. Bottom line. Theres a real problem here. Im assuming well be able to get to it. I think there is a very solvable problem. We need a dedication to solve it. So an optimistic ron johnson. He also raised some concerns about the Health Care Bills before ultimately voting in favor. So one more kind of wrench in the works here for Senate Republican leaders and they do not have a lot of margin to play with, stephanie. I want to bring in professor of law and Public Policy at nyu and former Deputy Director at the White House National economic counsel little la backholder and senior fellow at the union, mad ydy dexler. Putting trickle economics aside, why is the gop tax reform plan good for the middle and working class americans because trickle down is an assumption, its not a guarantee. Well, something that is a guarantee i believe is the Economic Growth that will come out of this plan. I think its interesting how garrett characterized the House Republican meeting this morning. Ive been to a lot of those meetings. Pep rally is not generally how i would describe them. Theres a lot of enthusiasm for what House Republicans are going to pass today. Orrin t and on the senate side, its something that will really affect the middle class. This tax this year is over 200,000 for a family. Thats a significant burden for any family, much less one making less than 50,000. Anything in this plan you can support . Well, this is a bill on bothed house and senate that is really heavily tilted towards the wealthy. On the individual mandate, its going to result in 13 Million People losing health insurance. A lot of those people are going to end up paying higher premiums that stay in the markets. About 10 more premiums according to cbo. Even on the individual mandate piece, these are bills that are terrible for the middle class. But overall, if you look at the senate bill, by 2026, theres not going to be any family that is earning a wage income thats going to face a tax cut. Theyre all going to have either tax increases or get nothing from the bill because what the bill does in the senate is it makes permanent Corporate Tax cuts and lets any benefits if there are any for the middle class expire. What are the loopholes being closed in terms of Corporate Taxes . The idea was corporations go through all of these loopholes and tax shelters so they can pay less taxes and be far more efficient. As it stands right now, all were doing right now is cutting the taxes but the loopholes remain. So theyre going to keep all of their tax preparer, all of their structurer, and theyre going to end up paying less. What loopholes are we going to be able to cross off the lift . I want to take issue with two things. One is the fact this Corporate Income tax wont effect income earners in the out years. Thats absolutely not true. The congressional score keeper actually says that 25 of the Corporate Income tax cut will go directly to laborers. Thats a benefit theyll see regardless of the perm side of the reform expires or not. Excuse me, thats an assumption, it is not a guarantee. The last time we saw repatriation. Every year ceo pay has increased and the disparity between ceo and worker pay has never been greater. Theres not a direct lever that is going to say well now that the money is repatriated here, were going to pay workers more. Stephanie, youre absolutely right. Youre absolutely right on that. Corporate profits have gone up as wages have stayed exactly where they are. Thats why tax reform will be a way to juice the economy to get wages to rise again if ceos arent doing it today, theres no reason for them to do it tomorrow. This doesnt have to do with the ceo decisions. This has to do with the size of the economy and whether or not productivity can rise for workers who are wage earners. Economists agree that once you cut the Corporate Income tax rate, which is what jct is analyzing. Its not the repatriation provision, its the tax cut that will spur productivity and increase workers wages. Not Larry Summers. Even if you look at the estimates which includes this assumption mattys making that cutting the corporate rate is going to increase wages, this is still a bill heavily tilted towards the wealthy. If you look just as a percentage of income, the tax cut for millionaires is going to be 3. 2 of their income and its 1 16ths as much. Even assuming that their wages increase from the Corporate Tax cut and my guess is a lot of people in the middle class want to know how their actual tax bill is going to be affected and not bank on the possibility a Corporate Tax cut will result in their wage s over time. I think its a real argument that people will see impact their pocketbookings in years to come. Jtc also says that 90 of taxpayers making less than 200,000 will see tax relief under this bill. That is an enormous amount of tax relief and its more expansive than weve seen in any modern tax bill. I would argue it is a big middle class tax cut and its not weighted specifically towards the wealthy. This isnt jtc sorry i dont know what estimates youre look at. If youre looking at the house bill, they find by 2027, 100 million americans are either going to face a tax increase or be left out by this bill, and thats over half of americans. They havent estimated yet the latest version of the senate so we cant say, but we can just look at the way the bill is structured and given that all of the individual rate cuts what they are, which is quite small for the middle class, expire after 2025. This is going to end up being a tax increase on them. The only thing that is kept for that affects individuals is the slower inflation indexing which is going to result in their tax bills rising over time. All right, we have to leave it there. We just found out we will be hearing from roy moore himself later this afternoon when he attends a rally of pastors and pro family leaders who are saying theyre sticking by him. Of course, this comes as a number of women alleging encounters or advances from moore has risen to nine. Moores campaign has said the allegations are false and that hes innocent of any wrongdoing. Joining me now is a selfproclaimed Christian Conservative and ceo of the now television network, also a member of President Trumps faith advisory counsel. Lets just start with the obvious, do you agree with roy moore when he says all these charges are false . Well, you know, i think its a very dangerous slippery slope. First of all, thanks for having me on. I think its a dangerous slippery slope when we just allow things that can be considered suspicious for 40yearold allegations to come up after roy moore has become the nominee, republican nominee for u. S. Senate. I think we really have to be very careful. Those allegations are extremely serious. If anyone who is found to be guilty of Sexual Misconduct should be removed from office or disqualified from running for office. But i think we have to really begin to ask yourselves is this simply just a political assassination of roy moore who is very clearly a strong Christian Conservative who for the last 40 years has been fighting the Christian Conservative fight in the great state of alabama. You really got to begin well, sir very, very suspicious. What we always have to be careful. We know already though the president s daughter says she has no reason to believe these women are lying. What number is it for you that you would start to change your view and say theres truth here . Is it 12 . Is it 15 . Well, again, i think its just very careful that six i just want you to answer the question for me so what do you need to hear . Today is judge moore today is judge moore, tomorrow it could be you. Men or women no, you know what being accused of Sexual Harassment it cant be me tomorrow if you let me sir, sir okay, go ahead. It cant be me tomorrow because when i was in my 30s, i didnt get banned from a mall. I wasnt calling girls out of trigonometry class and i wasnt dating girls under the age of 18 so no, sir, it is not possible for it to ever be me. Well, let me just say this. I know that it is very possible. Im not saying these women are lying. Im simply saying we need to be suspicious. I think we need to be very careful. When you think about barry nelson who was in a divorce proceeding in 1999, what judge moore sitting on the bench, shes one of the accusers. In 1999, she did not ask the judge to be recused from the court and judge roy moore and, sir, judge roy moore was also removed from the bench, yet you say hes been fighting the good Christian Conservative fight for 40 years. Clearly thats not a good fight for removed from the bench for refusing you got to remember why he was removed for not following the law, sir. There is a separation of church and state but for christians who are very proud of the Ten Commandments, proud of the Ten Commandments and we believe it should be on display in public places. Were proud that the word of god is the cannon for our life, but let me just say this. I understand how its important. I understand how character assassination works. Cnn did it to me. They refused to listen to me when i told them that a website which was an old discontinued website was done by a pr person and they didnt want to listen to that. They wanted to create the narrative that said i am a false fake liar and so thats exactly what they ran. I understand the power of character assassination. When i see roy moore i can say this looks like what i personally went through which is a sign of character assassination. Okay, just as an aside to the point you just made, a false fake liar would be a truth teller if were going to be technical. But i want to read for you what eric eric sen said, and this is a conservative christian who wrote on tuesday moore in Public Office and his ability to depend himself right now would just be used by others to harm both christians and conservatives in politics. His allegations are basically saying moores dope a terrible job defending himself. You talk about good christians. People like my parents who are roman catholics who are saying why cant this man actually defend himself if hes telling the truth. Well, i can agree with that. I think if it was me again, i cant speak for roy moore. I can simply say if it was mark burns, i would, without question, be guns ablazing and making sure these allegations were made to be false. All im simply saying, that we have to look at the possibility of this simply being just a character assassination. Why wait so long . And i think its a dangerous place. When we allow anyone to say anything, especially something as old as 40 years, and when the there is plenty of opportunity for else in aeig Beverly Nelsono come out with these accusations. I say we investigate them. We should investigate the accusers. Should we are knowing is this true, is this false, is this real or is this just an opportunity to, you know, to be used as a political pawn. Thats dangerous in american politics. Im saying as a christian and man of faith, we got to be careful, thats all im saying before we go, as a man of faith if this is true, lets have faith as a man of faith, ive got to ask you, me to you, as a man of faith, as a christian who doesnt believe in false christians or idol, whats your view on roy moore autographing bibles . Would jesus do that . Whats my view on repeat the question, whats my view on who . Roy moore autographs bibles. As a christian, as someone who believes in humility, not believing in false idol, you think thats normal . Well, i can tell you this no, id like you to answer the question, do you think its normal . Would jesus be autographing bibles . Let me answer it the way i want to answer it. I cant answer it the way you want me to answer it. Let me tell you, jesus the bible says let me be quick had the issue of blood, she reached out and she touched the hem of jesus garment. She never touched jesus but she touched his hem. In other word, she touched his cloths. It was her faith that healed her. She never touched his body, she touched his cloth. If it increases somebodys faith, whether it be a piece of cloth, theres no voodoo or special power in these artifacts. Whether it be a signature. If it increases somebodys faith to believe moore and the faith of the lord jesus christ, than so be it. I wouldnt want an autographed bible of roy moore because it doesnt increase my faith. In fact if you look at polls measuring americas standing in the world, we see that esteem for the United States has gone down under his presidency and on trade, while he has pulled out of the Transpacific Partnership which had been negotiateded over many years and concluded under president obama, the other signatories to that agreement are now going ahead with their own agreement without the United States and by the assessment of most international observers, that is seceding leadership in e region to other countries, particul particularly china. Did President Trump get played . Yes, they might perform a rose ceremony and do a dance. But as far as what real tangible takeaways were, i dont see any. Whats remarkable is china actually has a weak hand. They have bad growth figures. They have bad demographic figures. They alienated most of the region throughout the obama years with heavyhanded tactics in the south china sea. Sounds like youre talking about russia. We were in a sweet spot. All of the region from south korea to japan, taiwan, vietnamese, they were coming to us. All we had to do was consolidate a relationship with them and we would have had a much stronger hand to play against the chinese. But trump arrives with an America First agenda.
