Thats happened for the last two years has had a much harsher impact on our democracy than a couple facebook ads. President trump heading to atlanta to talk about the Opioid Epidemic. A distributor of prescription drugs and its former executives are facing criminal Drug Trafficking charges. Rdc shipped tens of millions of highly addictive pills to pharmacies that it knew were illegally dispensing narcotics. The issue of opioids is a serious problem in this country and we take it very seriously. But in this case these charges, mr. Dowd is being framed. Plain and simple. In this case the government just got it wrong. And how about those Election Results . [ cheers and applause ] that sends a resounding message to our community. It sends a resounding message to the nation that tampa celebrates its diversity and lifts everyone up in a positive way. We dont tear people down with negativity. So thank you all for believing in that message. Lets start with that story, tampa has a new mayor this morning, the former police chief is making history becoming the first openly gay mayor to lead a major florida city. Caster crushed her republican opponent in a victory last night and she did it with less money. That makes her the third openly gay mayor elected this year after chicago and madison, wisconsin. Were going to speak to the mayor momentarily, but lets look at how critical the job of a mayor is. We love talking about this on the show because for all of our criticism of the inaction at the federal level, there are lots of interesting things going on in the cities of this country. Things are getting done. A mayor is elected, generally speaking or sometimes appointed to be the chief executive of a city, town or a bureau. Theyre responsibilities can include everything from serving on the city council to preparing the annual budget. Mayors are in charge of maintaining a level of peace in the city by appointing and supervising the citys top officials and overseeing the police and Fire Departments and theyve been some of the biggest champions on Climate Change. Theres much more going on in Climate Change in states and cities across the country in the absence of policy and action on the federal level. Most notably having to do with the paris climate agreement. Mayors on the front lines responding to National Disasters and regulating certain actions during and after the event. When theres a natural disaster, its mayors, fire chiefs and Police Chiefs that were talking to. And another issue they deal with is a growing community, thats why a number of mayors have said to the federal government, were not in the business of immigration policy. We as mayors need to keep our cities safe and our people prosperous. Which is why they want to preserve sanctuary cities. Not because theyre taking a position on immigrants, they dont have the resources to be immigration enforcers. Joining us now from florida, weve been talking about her, tampas newly elected mayor jane caster. Congratulations on your win. Lets talk about how you got it done. Your opponent who ran it was a nasty race. Your opponent spent nearly 5 million of your own money. You spent a smaller fraction of that. What do you think made a difference to tampa voters . Well, first, it was only negative on one side. I ran a very, very positive, very positive campaign. No negativity whatsoever. I focused on the issues that were important to our community and i had a vision and that was the that was the difference. Thats what thats what our citizens want from a leader. And they saw that in me. And im very excited to have been elected as the mayor of my hometown. We dont necessarily think of that party of the country as being liberal. Did being gay play a big part in this discussion, or did the fact that you were the police chief, that people knew you and knew how you worked. People knew me and the issue of my being gay never arose during the campaign. People want somebody who has the skill, knowledge and ability to get things done. And thats what that was my message. Thats what i focused on and apparently the voters heard that. Lets switch gears and talk immigration. The Florida House is on the verge of passing a pan on sanctuary cities. We were discussing that in the state. What do you make of that effort and the president s tactics right now on illegal immigration . I think it is a solution looking for a problem because in the cities in florida, the counties actually handle all of the jail systems and the state handles the prison system. And so really there is no such thing as a sanctuary city in the community. But here in tampa, we are a very, very diverse city and we are welcoming of everyone, everyone in our community. And were not going to be in the business of immigration enforcement. It is important for us to have this conversation. We have it with mayors, but youre a police chief whos going to be a mayor, just articulate for us. Because there are some people who portray mayors and sanctuary cities as being lawless and embracing of illegal immigration. But there are very practical reasons for not wanting to be involved in the business of immigration enforcement. There are. First and foremost, the idea of this lawlessness does not bear out with the facts. Immigrants commit very, very few crimes in any city nationwide, but its also important because there are certain communities that are distrustful of Law Enforcement and so you have to build those bridges with those communities so that they are trustful and can come forward when there are victimized so we can make their neighborhoods as safe as every other neighborhood in the city. Its significant that Law Enforcement serves every single citizen regardless of their immigration status. Lets talk about what your priorities are with the federal government. Next week, President Trump and democrats are meeting to discuss infrastructure. In your campaign you cited Public Transportation as an area you want to improve. Is that your number one concern with regard to tampa and federal dollars . That is, thats the number one concern here as i have said all along, we never lacked for good ideas in transportation. What we lacked for was the funding to implement those. And we actually here in hilthis county voted for a tax on transportation. I want to combine that with state and federal dollars to get some Transportation Solutions here in tampa. Let me ask you about Climate Change because thats one of those areas where we have much more success at having conversation at the state level. Florida is ground zero for the affects of Climate Change. Your citizens are people are people who really sort of appreciate the connection between water and their land and their cities. Yes. What do you do about this . Well, im going to address that from both ends. First and foremost, ill have a resilient sustainability officer in my administration and were going to look at what we can do to mitigate the effects of sea level rise. Clearly were on the water here. What we can do as far as city codes are concerned, lifting roads, whatever we can do, making our city greener through the fleet, through solar energy, through green buildings, and then on the other end what we can do is reduce our Carbon Footprint and thats everybodys responsibility, not just city government, but every single citizen. What we can do to reduce our Carbon Footprint here in the city of tampa. Its not a its a livelihood issue. It is. You said you want to create a better relationship between tampas Police Department and its residents. Why couldnt you do that as the police chief . We have a great relationship with our community and its something that we worked on every single day. Tampa is one of the safest cities for our size nationwide, and the reason for that is because the Police Officers and the citizens work hand in hand to keep crime out of their neighborhoods. And i am incredibly proud of our Police Department and our community and the relationship that they have working together to keep crime out of tampa. Mayorelect, a historic win. Congratulations. Thank you very much. We look forward to more conversations with you. Coming up next when you talk about Climate Change and cities, right, residents there might not think of themselves as environmentalists or conservationists, those are two different things. When you take the conversation to washington, they politicize it. These are people who are just wanting to live to live their lives, not have their houses blown down. There are hunters in this country who are concerned about whats happening. Everybody has a reason to be concerned about Climate Change. Everybody should want to drink clean water. At the highest level of the white house, according to the New York Times reporting, this may very well be threatening our national security, here it is, russia, interfered with the 2016 election. That is not something up for debate. It is a settled fact. A july 2018 report from the Republicanled SenateIntelligence Committee begins with this russian activities in the runup to the 2016 president ial election represented a significant escalation in a long history of russian attempts to interfere in u. S. Domestic politics. And the director of National Intelligence invoked 9 11 saying this at a security conference. Here we are nearly two decades later and im here to say the warning lights are blinking red again. Today the Digital Infrastructure that serves this country is literally under attack. Literally under attack. By december, the Senate Intelligence committee commissioned two studies on the 2016 election interference and again the first sentence gets rights to the point. Russias internet ledge agency launched an extended attack on the United States by using propaganda to misinform and polarize u. S. Voters and Robert Muellers report begins with this the russian government interfered in the 2016 president ial election in sweeping and systematic fashion. But according to the times, in the months before Kirstjen Nielsen was forced to resign, she tried to focus on the white house on preparing President Trumps chief of staff told her not to bring it up in front of the president. The white house pushed back on the story with chief of staff Mick Mulvaney saying he doesnt recall anything along those lines happening can i just say, lets be clear about the white house pushing back. Mick mulvaney didnt say that didnt happen. He said i dont remember. Thats not exactly a pushback. Thats a let me confuse you. In an event on tuesday Jared Kushner further downplayed russias involvement like this. When you look at what russian did, buying some facebook ads to try to sow dissent, but i think the investigations and all of the speculation thats happened for the last two years has had a much harsher impact on our democracy than a couple facebook ads. It is absolutely not a couple of facebook ads. The only audience Jared Kushner would be saying this for is russia whos toasting that and even if the administration, ali, wants to make the argument, listen, that interference happened on obamas watch, not ours, your clock is ticking for the last two years and youre not doing anything. Jared kushner is a Senior Administration official. So for them to say, for russia to get the message that a Certain Administration official says just a couple of ads, is crazy. And clint watts is joining us now. I couldnt believe when i heard Jared Kushner say that. It was at the times 100 conference. He seems to have forgotten about the trump tower meeting he fell for. He was dumb enough to go to a meeting under the us miss auspices of dirt on the hillary clinton. You can influence us however you would like, and 2020 is essentially up for grabs and not only will we not fight back, well minimumize it and we might open the door for future help. You testified before the Senate Intel Committee and you said this, the most important actions what lay people would call disinformation come from outside the u. S. Government. Lets just note that yesterday the president met with jack dorsey, the cofounder to twitter, he talked about he was complaining that people who support him have had their accounts shut down, hes worried about losing followers over not about all the serious issues, he was complaining about his supporters maybe being shut off of twitter. In my opinion thats more a conservative move to move their follows off of platforms. They would like for you to be on a social media app going into 2020 where you communicate with only people that are like you, you get all of your news and information from the administration or the candidate, you donate there and you become basically an organized megaphone back out onto twitter which may be sowing disinformation. This is a dangerous environment for us to be in. We complain about the social Media Companies not being a neutral platform and the president brings them into his office and leans on them about being a neutral platform. What can these social Media Companies actually do . We know that when the Mueller Report was released, we saw bot farms from saudi arabia pushing this russian gate idea. Thousands of those accounts have been shut down. But theyve been shut down after all of those messages were released. We talk about verification, why doesnt everyone have the ability to get a verified blue checkmark . That would solve a lot of the problem, right . You know those people are verified as real people, any sort of of bots, you cant verify who they are, and that changes the dramatic and the landscape, the russia gate hoax gets elevated by bots which makes more real people look at that trending hashtag. Facebook has done quite a bit. Theyre doing pretty much weekly shut downs. This is spread everywhere, russia, iran, and ill tell you the biggest offenders going into 2020 are domestic actors because theyve seen how the administration is responding to this. Everyone is jumping into the game. If youve got money, you can change peoples perspectives. Well be watching closely with you. Today in america, you are more likely to die from an opioid overdose than a car crash. Were going to break down the Opioid Crisis in america and how some companies and Business People are finally being held to account with actual criminal charges. President trump is about to speak on this very issue in atlanta. This very issue in atlanta. Im missing out on our family outings because i cant find a bladder leakage product that fits. Everything was too loose. But depend® fitflex feels tailored to me. With a range of sizes for all body types. Depend® fitflex underwear is guaranteed to be your best fit. Depend® fitflex underwear [kno king] memories. What we deliver by delivering. 130. That is how Many Americans die every single day from opioid overdoses. President trump and First Lady Melania Trump will speak at a drug abuse summit in atlanta, georgia. Its a crisis that the president has vowed to tackle since he first took office and now for the first time ever, pharmaceutical distributors are being held accountable. On tuesday, federal prosecutors charged rdc for their role in fueling the Opioid Epidemic through Drug Trafficking. Those executives were charged with willfully failing to file suspicious order reports. Prosecutors say the company ignored red flags and shipped millions of oxycodone pills to pharmacies they knew were distributing drugs illegally to help their profits store. Between 2010 and 2018, the company sold more than 143 million oxycodone pills to new york customers alone. On a nationwide scale, roughly 21 to 29 patients prescribed opioids eventually misused this. More than 90,000 people died from opioid overdoses. That number is higher than the 58,220 u. S. Service members that died due to the vietnam war. And get this, according to a report conducted bid the National Safety council, people are now more likely to die from an Opioid Crisis than a car crash. This is remarkable. Joining us now is new York Attorney general. Were waiting to hear from the president on this. Is there something youre hoping to here from the federal government on dealing with opioids . More resources, more resources across the nation, any cuts that he has proposed, particularly cuts in the area of the National Drug control act, they need to be restored. They were cut in the years budget. Its important that he restores those funds. We need additional funds for beds, education, a number of workers, Substance Abuse workers in public schools, they will be reduced significantly. Its important that we focus on prevention, education, detection and treatment. And we need to talk about treatment as well. Why have there been cuts since the crisis is growing . Thats a good question. And i cant answer that. I can only tell you about the individuals i have met who have urged me to file a lawsuit against manufacturers and distributors and as well against a family that benefitted from this crisis. Every day in new york state nine individuals die and as you mentioned across this country, 43 individuals die. Its an epidemic that we need to gain control of, but the only way we can do it is when all forces, levels of government get together and ensure that we have the necessary resources to address this because this is an epidemic that knows no political affiliation, knows no race or ethnicity or geography. We hear from victims all across the spectrum. The milestone yesterday and the charges against rdc was interesting in that its similar to what weve talked with purdue pharma. The company was made aware of that they cant possibly be sending these drugs to a pharmacy in new york that was buying these drugs at a rate that just didnt make sense. It wasnt logical. And yet when brought to their attention, they said, dont worry about it. Keep going. Whats their legal obligation . They failed to exercise their duty as it relates to preventing and protecting drugs from going into unlawful hands. They ignored all of the red flags. And the protocols that were put in place, they were not managed, they were not properly funded and in situations, pharmacies dispense millions and millions of pills to individuals who were addicts. Is that a criminal violation . If you look in banking, you need to get a license and file protocols and if you dont, you could be in violation. You could go to jail. In pharmaceuticals, what are the rules for an executive . Yesterday, as you know, the Southern District of new york announced charges and they entered into a settlement where the corporation would pay 20 million and a prosecution agreement was put off. Then there were private individuals, the ceo and other officers within rochester that were charged with criminal charges personally and those cases are still ongoing. And so its really critically important that individuals know that in new york state we have a Substance Abuse act and it speaks about ensuring that corporations, that pharmaceutical companies, and Manufacturing Companies are doing all they can do to identify red flags and respond to red flags and whenever theres any suspicious orders, that they alert there were red flags and they did ignore them. In the case of your lawsuit against purdue, purdue has put out a statement saying that youre going after former directors of the company and youre going after this family . The Purdue Company was owned, managed by this family, and they made millions if not billions. Theyve diverted their profits to offshore accounts. They illegally transferred funds to their personal accounts. Its important that we hold this family responsible. Purdue introduced to the market back in 1997 ox ycodone which i responsibility for this crisis. And clearly purdue, this family, the manufacturers, as well as the distributors, need to be held accountable. Our lawsuit is civil in nature. The lawsuit that was filed yesterday by the Southern District of new york is criminal in nature. The bottom line is individuals need to be held response and we need to put forth remedies as a result of their financial settlement, remedies that would, again, focus on treatment, prevention, education, and detection. One of the things, when we think of this 130 people who die in america every day, and it was like the crack epidemic, which also became normalized and became part of our culture, and now that is sort of happening here. This is part of our culture, we know people die, we know they die across the spectrum, theres a danger in that, in not dealing with this as the crisis it is. When you begin to normalize this type of behavior and you treat it like a criminal justice, when you focus primarily on criminalizing individuals, this is a Public Health crisis and it should be treated as such. And so its really critically important that we provide more recovery beds to individuals. As i travel throughout the state of new york, theres less and less beds available, we need counselors in schools and as early as graduate school, there are individuals who have been addicted to these opioids as young as 10, 11, and 12 and its important that we educate them and we do it as early as possible. We need to provide more resources to Law Enforcement, to interdict these drugs, both at the border and elsewhere and individuals who are in the criminal justice system, we need to make sure that they are held accountable for causing this epidemic, but lets not loose sight of the fact that these manufacturers and distributors and this family were part of a criminal enterprise and they need to be held accountable for all of the individuals who have lost loved ones, again, in the United States of america, 47632 a day across this nation and nine a day in new york state. Its amazing. 10 year olds. This thing knows know boundaries. Thank you for joining us. Thank you for your work. The special counsels investigation may be finished but the investigations into the president are far from over. Nearly everything he has been involved with is under scrutiny. There is his inaugural committee in february, the u. S. Attorneys office in manhattan issued subpoenas for documents of donors and guests looking at a potential moneylaundering according to the New York Times. The times also reported that the u. S. Attorney in brooklyn is looking into the inaugural Committee Launching an investigation into potential straw donations from foreigners which would be a potential violation of Campaign Finance law. And in the nations capital, the Washington Post reports that the District Attorney there requested documents from the inaugural Committee Investigating wasteful, mismanaged or improperly provided funds. The new York Attorney general is in the midst of the probe into the president s charitable foundation. He alleges the foundation functioned as little more than a checkbook, accusing it of unlawfully coordinating with the campaign. And then theres Donald TrumpsFamily Company under investigation by the new York Department of taxation. The probe is looking into allegations of efforts at massive taxevasion schemes reported extensively by the New York Times. And of course there are the congressional inquiries. Jerry nadler requested information from 81 individuals and entities surrounding the president s business and russia looking into obstruction of justice, corruption and abuse of power. Nadler is also seeking the fully unredacted Mueller Report. And then theres the ways and Means Committee where the chairman used a provision to request the president s last six tax returns. Maxine waters issued her own subpoena to the president s biggest lender for his business and financial records regarding the president and she was joined by congressman adam schiff. The committees are looking for Financial Information from other Financial Institutions like j. P. Morgan chase, bank of network, and citigroup about possible moneylaundering according to the New York Times. This morning the president addressed these subpoenas saying this to reporters. The subpoena is ridiculous. We have been i have been the most transparent president and administration in the history of our country by far. I thought after two years wed be finished with it. No. Now the house goes and starts subpoenaing they want to go every deal ive ever done. Mueller, i assume, for 35 million, checked my taxes, checked my financials which are great, by the way, you know theyre great. Theyre great. Financials are great. Its all great. Great. Actually, we dont know exactly what bob mueller looked at. No, we dont. Weve never known whether Donald Trumps financials are great. Thats been the source of mystery way before he was running for president. He says hes worth this much, the bank thinks hes worth this much. Theres zero consistency. Joining us now Southern District attorney for Southern District of new york. We know that the democrats have crossed all their the ts and dotted their is. But the president is essentially blowing his nose with the subpoenas and deadlines. What do democrats do . First of all, theyre probably going to end up having to enforce these subpoenas in court. And unfortunately, it may take time. But i hope that that is what happens here because court is a place where this kind of just blanket assertion of, no, dont feel like responding, isnt going to fly. Of course there are legitimate privileges available to anyone, a president , a defendant, a target a subject, but these are not being used in legitimate ways. Trump is trying to hide behind, you know without even mentioning them, hes using executive privilege, whatever privileges there are, but hes not using them in a legitimate way. And that when you try to just, you know, on few skate behind privileges, thats bordering on further obstruction. Can i give a but . I understand thats you think thats the best course of action, but thats what the president wants. The president wants, lets send this to court, he wants to run the clock, youll get them, and then he won the election and Kellyanne Conway got on the lawn and said, thats already been litigated. If democrats take that route, isnt that what the president wants them to do . Yeah, look, its not that i think its the best course of action, it may end up being the only course of action in the sense that the only other possibility is if republicans join democrats in saying, no, this is legitimate process. Our body, the house and the senate, have legitimate oversight functions. We have the constitutional power to do this and you cant thumb your nose at us. Just today Lindsey Graham was tweeting that basically the Mueller Report says no obstruction, no collusion, this would be political retribution for you to use it as a basis to investigate. If theyre going to take that position, then i dont know who choice other than starting impeachment proceedings which would solve some of this. But either way, theyre going to be backed into a corner. Trump is using the Mueller Report now, what he just said there was actually remarkable. Hes saying, because mueller didnt say that ive committed tax fraud or theres something really bad in my financials, that means i didnt, which as you guys point out, absolutely, you cannot take muellers silence on that to mean that. Thats how hes going to weaponize it. If stephanie were the lawyer for the for the committee, what if she made exactly the point she made, hey, court, donald trump likes to run the conclude, there is actually an election coming, hes been on the record as saying this has already been litigated. Can these requests from the court to enforce subpoenas be expedited because donald trump has a habit of doing this . You can always ask a court for to expedite things. Its usually easier the other way, if youre trying to stop somebody from doing something. But certainly they could say, you know, theres irreparable harm here if this isnt dealt with quickly because we need to resolve this before this election cycle runs out. I think that would be a good argument, an argument that i would make, unknown whether it would win the day. Do you know if i was trying to convince a judge, i probably wouldnt lead with, hey, court. Good to see you. Most of my coming up next, a 3yearold boy, abandoned at the border with a phone number on his show. That was it. If the president does Say Something important including as the new York Attorney general was saying, a greater commitment to funding and resources, the one thing we know is the federal government can actually be helpful in this fight. And i will say this. The president has indicated a desire to be helpful on this. He doesnt speak about it in a politicized manner. However, there have been cuts to federal programs that would have been beneficial if youre trying to fight the crisis. The Opioid Crisis should not be a partisan or political issue. We need to cover a different subject. Immigration. The president says he is now sending armed soldiers to our nations southern border. He made the announcement on twitter after mexican soldiers confronted u. S. Soldiers on american soil earlier this week. They are seeing record levels of apprehensions accusing mexico now of not doing enough. According to new statistics from the agency, there has been more than a 370 increase in family units apprehended so far in 2019. Compared to this time last year. Lets just remember this. President trump whos going to be the toughest of the tough on immigration, he controls policy. Its only gone up. And the cdp says today says 60 of apprehensions along the border are family units and unaccompanied children. Joining us now jacob sowbra. I want to play a clip from 60 minutes when kevin mcaleanen was spoken to. Did you have any regrets about the way that was carried out . Yeah. I think when you lose a public trust in a Law Enforcement, that wasnt successful. Looking back on it, did it work . So the enforcement of the law against parents who violated our border laws and brought children with them was effective. It reduced the flow. But it didnt work in the sense we lost the public trust in the implementation of that initiative. Whats your reaction to that . Well, thats not exactly true. It didnt reduce the flow in any way that was outside of seasonal norms. Numbers go up and down on a regular basis when you look at the immigration statistics. And separation and deterrents is a larger policy strategy that never stops people from coming. If that was true, people would have stopped coming after bill clinton put in prevention through deterrents in 1993. Here we are today. We should remind our audience whether or not the president has his wall or not, Border Security is on his watch right now. And we are watching this increase as people are fearing that the border will close. Talk to us about the young boy found in with a phone number on him. He was in the brush and had a number written on his shoes. His parents name or somebodys name. They put him in to watch paw patrol when they picked him up. Its a symptom of a larger problem. We have a humanitarian crisis of Central Americans coming to this country. But why . And why are people leaving children in the brush in order to be picked up by Border Patrol agents . The answer is, the system is broken. But the solution to the Trump Administration is deterrents. And as i just said, we know deterrence doesnt work. Why not look at the asylum process and put in changes that are reasonable and figure out a way to get these people into the country . El salvador, honduras, and guatemala are not giant countries. We can deal with the flows of the people coming from these country quite easily. Its not a national crisis. Its a humanitarian crisis. Thats not the approach of the Trump Administration.
