Flight. Thats where the deep space climate observatory satellite mission, better known as discover comes in. It is very exciting for me. Plus an alabama judge speaks out against equality. There is no end to the power of god. Good to have you with us tonight, folks. We start this evening with some brutally honest remarks coming from president obama on Climate Change. In an interview with vox, president obama says the media overstates the risk of terrorism compared to Climate Change. Do you think the media sometimes overstates the level of alarm people should have about terrorism as opposed to Climate Change . Absolutely. I dont blame the media for that. Whats the famous saying about local newscasts right . If it bleeds it leads, right . You show crime stories and you show fires, because thats what folks watch. It is all about ratings, and Climate Change is one that is happening at such a broad scale and such a complex system that it is a hard story for, i think, the media to tell on a daytoday basis. President obama thinks the media clings to stories like terrorist attacks because it is easy to cover and it rates. Climate change is difficult for the press to get excited about it and to cover. We have tried to do it on this program, Climate Change. We also think extreme weather events around the country are very important. We think it is all connected to Climate Change. At this hour new england is being slammed by its third major snowstorm in three weeks. The storm is expected to dump two feet of snow in parts of the region. Sound normal to you . It could bring the snow totals in some areas up to 80 inches and we still have a lot of winter left. Over the past three weeks snowplows in massachusetts have moved enough snow to fill Gillette Stadium 90 times. The mayor of boston says it is a record setting winter. We have never seen this type of snow in boston in our history. Severe weather like this in new england is really becoming par of the course. There is little doubt among scientists that Severe Weather and Climate Change are connected. World natural catastrophes have been steadily increasing. In 2014, there were close to 1,000 events. Some of these events are happening right now. California is experiencing its worst drought in over 1200 years. San francisco just saw its first january without rain. Not a drop of rain for 165 years. Last summer we saw record wildfires in the state of washington. Parts of lake erie turned into a toxic algae bloom during the warming temperatures. In january, noaa announced that 2014 was the warmest record on global records. You go one, two, three, four five. It is one after another. These are recordbreaking times when it comes to Severe Weather. Republicans, what do they do . They deny science. They say man is not the problem when it comes to Climate Change. It is rather startling. Last month senator brian shots attached an amendment saying human activity significantly contributes to Climate Change. 49 republicans voted against the amendment. Climate has always changed and always will. There is archaeological evidence of that. There is historic evidence of that. There is biblical evidence of that. There are some people that are so arrogant to think they are so powerful they can change climate. Man cant change climate. Clearly science Means Nothing to senator inhofe. A few days later, Senate Republicans approved the keystone xl pipeline. It is the latest in their agenda to let Oil Companies run amuck. Some senators want to limit the Environmental Protection agency. They want to drill now off the east coast and the president is wrong on this to allow it to happen and they want to drill in national parks. There is no such thing as safe oil drilling or pipelines. I was down in the gulf this weekend covering the aftermath of the bp deep water horizon disaster almost five years later and the gulf is still a mess. If sciencedenying republicans have their way, all of our oceans and public lands will be peril. Well tell you about the destroyed lives and businesses and the Environmental Impact and the Health Issues people are dealing with and just what is bp doing when it comes to financial restitution. Our series starts next monday. Tonight let me introduce you to what is known down in the gulf as a tar ball. This is oil. This was oil that was released from the oil spill five years ago. Then they put a chemical on it and the mass comes together. It drops to the bottom of the gulf. This tar ball was picked up in recent days by a shrimp boat in the gulf. Now this is whats happening. This isnt being reported anywhere. The bottom line is the gulf is still a major story. Did you know that that 20 billion they committed for restitution for all the people who were hurt in the gulf . No. Only 4 billion has been paid out. Do you know that theres a tremendous amount of litigation thats taking place right now and lives have been destroyed, careers have been lost and theres a tremendous amount of strife in the gulf right now . If you see the commercials and you listen to the pr hacks out there, you would think the gulf is on a roll. It is not. We will bring you the story next week here on the ed show. Dr. Halter are you off your rocker because there are some people in the congress that are in total denial and say that people like you are nothing but an extremist when you talk about all the extremes that were seeing right now . In fact, theyve been around for a long time. Whats your response to the way republicans are talking about Climate Change . Good evening, ed. Lets take a look at nature. Nature shows those that are looking and those that have trained for 30plus years whats going down. Lets go back to 2010 ed. In california which by the way supplies 44. 7 billion per annum of agriculture to our nation we are the number one producer. 50 of everything on your dinner plate comes from our state. The honey winds up in your favorite cereals in your bread and sausages. Three years into our deep drought, drought, 10. 9 billions of honey dropped. The trees in these droughts and the plants are not producing flowers. The bees cant go in for their nectar. That means our food supply is in jeopardy. We have got to future proof our nation now. Whats your response to the president s comments that the media and Climate Change just dont seem to mix well that were ambulance chasing . Thats paraphrasing. Thats basically what the president said. If it bleeds it leads. The gulf is bleeding. I think historically Climate Change has not gotten the attention it deserves. Thanks to guys like you there is more appropriate attention to the calamity of the Climate Change whether it is the algae bloom in toledo ohio the droughts and the forest fires you have talked about. While there has not been enough attention to the problems we are seeing that start to change. I hope more and more people will follow your lead. There are so Many Solutions on our soil. Keeping the dirtiest fuels in the ground for good. The president says Climate Change coverage doesnt rate. Whats your response to that . A large number of Media Outlets have made a catastrophic Climate Change story into a snooze and snore moment. First, the American Public is now officially reading and comprehending around a middle school level. It makes it easy for fox to come in with their ten second sound bytes and make it sound like a disaster. They cant see oceans creeping to up to their front door. They are already experiencing Climate Change. They dont get that because at the same time theyre seeing these worse storms take place. Theyre listening to fox quality sophomoric comments about how snowstorms prove that theres no global warming, so it is difficult to explain the Science Behind that in a tensecond sound byte. Theres there billionaire money being pumped into think tanks to convince us not to worry, that it is all a big hoax. Ignore the water that is on the deck. It is complex. You cant blame the media entirely. It is a tough story to tell in ten seconds. When you have competitors destroying the effort to tell the story, it becomes very difficult. The denial by elected officials is utterly amazing. Do you think theres in doubt that Climate Change and Severe Weather patterns are connected . Theres no doubt. As a matter of fact, if we went down to miami and you asked the mayor, theyve got very big problem. Theyre below sea level. My colleagues two weeks ago at harvard released a paper showing that sea level is raising 25 faster than we previously thought. For every problem, there are at least three solutions. We mortals on main street that can translate into jobs into future proofing. Its got to happen, ed. If the media did a better job and focused more and i think thats what the president was asking the media to do it would turn the deniers and their attitude would be different. Absolutely. The media needs to focus a lot more on Climate Science and asking members of congress and people running for president do they side with polluting industries or stand up for future generations and try to protect the planet. We have started to see some change, but more and more we need to see the calling out of Climate Change deniers in congress. There were five republicans in the senate who acknowledged that Climate Change is happening and that humans are significantly contributing to it. If you think it is happening, where what is the solution . I think if the media spent more time on it there would be some attitudes changing. You can use bp as an example. They have told a lot of people that things are okay in the gulf. Dont worry about it. Bp is spending millions of dollars a month to convince the rest of the country that there is no problem here look the other way. They are using this science denial. It has destroyed the ecosystem on this coast. The real ugly part of this story, ed is that there is not enough pressure on bp. Somebody has to step on their neck and make sure they do what theyre supposed to do. People are saying they are grateful for the idea that the media is paying attention to a story that has not come away. There are dolphins coming up on the shore. Welcome back to the ed show. Chief Justice Roy Moore learned the Supreme Court delivers the final word. Probate judges began issuing samesex marriage licenses to samesex couples. The judge put her ruling on hold until day in order to give the Supreme Court time to intervene. Late sunday night, moore issued a letter ordering local officials to deny marriage licenses to gay couples. Moore said those who violate his order would face a reprimand by governor roy bentley. It is a desperate and dramatic 11th hour move. In june of 1963 alabama governor George Wallace studood in front of the door to and tried to block black students from registering from classes. Roy moore is trying to block the courthouse door. It is unclear the weight moores order will actually carry. The Supreme Court annoyanced this morning announced that it would not intervene. Joining me tonight on this issue is mike rogers of rawstory. Com. Good to have you with us tonight. I guess were going back to the 1950s or 60s here. First of all what is your reaction to this and what authority does moore have as you see it . You hit the nail on the head. These guys want to drag us back to the 1960s. What moore did was basically tell the judges in his state that they had to not issue licenses for same sex couples, but the governor has said he will not prosecute any judges who go ahead and issue marriage licenses. People in the state are getting married. Thats really is what the most important thing is. Hundreds of couples are able to walk down the aisle and nothing horrible is happening all over the state. What happens if the judge does deny licenses . There is one case where a judge refused to open the office. Those who dont want to do it are avoiding it at this point. As i said he wouldnt even open this morning to issue those licenses. At least eight of the states 67 counties are still blocking samesex marriage licenses so what is next in this fight . Well it is unbelievable. There are four cases right now before the Supreme Court they have accepted as a group from many michigan, ohio, kentucky, and tennessee. Well hear those cases in april and finally the court will say Marriage Equality for same sex couples is required across america and is a constitutional right. You have roy moore who thinks he is going to stop the course of history. He has been tossed out once from his position on that court. Now hes trying to do it again. Basically, pandering to his electorate at this point. How much confidence do you have that the alabama governor bentley is not going to take action, that hes not going to do anything against elected officials who fail to follow Alabama State law . He put out this Statement Today that said he wouldnt. Sometimes these guys get so much political pressure that they have to sway against what they know is right. It remains to be seen over the long haul what hell do particularly in places where this judge has refused to open the office in order to grant licenses to samesex couples. Somebody needs to educate roy moore apparently again that the federal courts supersede the state courts in this cutountry. Do you think there is a parallel to George Wallace back in the day and whats happening right now . I do. Here we have government officials who are refusing to cooperate. I dont want to diminish a lot of the violence that was going on in the 60s. Were not seeing those kinds of things, but were seeing some of it. Hopefully this will be seen as a sideshow in just a couple of months. Do you think gay couples in alabama will just not get married . Do you think this will curb the unions of gay couples . We have seen time and time again throughout history what people will do to secure their equal rights. I think they will not sit back. If there is a courtroom or a probate judge who will sit back and not let them get married, well hear of people going to other counties. Thats all anybody is seeking. As we see, it is really heading that way. These guys are kneeneadrthals when it comes to these issues. A legacy of racial equality from one of the greats of college sports. Next, ask ed live. Putin is not going to back down, is he . We have squeezed him economically. Hes not backing down. Oil is at 40 bucks or less. Likely to go lower a barrel. He has just heard merkel say to the president of the United States you guys are on your own. What kind of assistance would we give them . It is not going to be machine guns and small weapons. It is going to be relatively serious stuff, but none of it can be of american manufacture. It is going to be counter battery radar, for example. Antitank missiles multiple rocket launchers, shoulder to surface missiles. If the ukrainians can get their act together and have enough people at the decisive places and times they are always in danger of having substantial units of their armydecimatesd. How much of a political fight is this going to be in america . There are going to be focuses that say we cant allow putin to continue this aggression. It is going to be another one of these moments with president ial contenders coming in 2016 want to paint barack obama as weak. I think the president through most of the ukraine crisis has been very smart. At the beginning, he said we need a ukraine who defines itself as european and next to russia. Hes been very judicious about not going too far. Were dealing with as ukraine. If we escalate if we throw arms into this, we need to begin thinking at the moment what are the unintended consequences. Thats a huge deal. People like Henry Kissenger have been wondering do you want to have a slippery slope to war . Do you think Vladimir Putin can be negotiated with . I do. There is a lot of demonization of Vladimir Putin. He deserves some of it, but not all of it. Hes sort of testing our resolve for an area that is 300 miles from moscow. Figure out far it is from washington, d. C. It is a geographically stressed area. Doesnt mean he should be appeased at all, but it does raise the question of whether were willing to sit down with this man and have a talk about what he is trying to achieve in the world because i look at this as negotiations and what were trying to achieve in the world. And that discussion has not occurred. Colonel, do we have a strategy in dealing with this . Not at all. We really dont know what to do, do we . We dont have a plan. I think steve is absolutely right. I dont know whether or not you can negotiate with this guy, but negotiations are absolutely essential. There has to be some trades made. I dont know if the ukrainians are going to be able to beat back the russian defense. I think he would redouble his efforts to take over all of ukraine. If were talking about raising the ante there, he will too. Were not sending americans to go fight in the ukraine. Were not going to be there for a decade. I think we understand that but talk is cheap. If we think that were going to be able to do it with anything other than a serious conversation at the highest levels, i think we are sadly mistaken because were not interested in going all in. Yeah. Price of oil has a lot to do with this . If his economy is going well we may not be where we are. There were times when we decided that russia would never have a place in nato. When russia was coming apart, were high on the saddle and russia is inconsequential. When russia got capable and powerful in the world, they then that was a russia on the move. I think it is a big mistake to think when a nation is experiencing an economic implosion that it is easier to deal with. It is much more dangerous. It is much more paranoid collapsing complicated russia. We need to be careful with that analogy. It is when it is weak that we need to create a contour back to some sort of global deal. We stand at this point on sort of the threshold of history. A new deep spate satellite is set to launch which will dramatically tell solar storm warnings. The discover satellite will continue monitoring the constant stream of charged particles from the sun also called solar winds. Discover will orbit the sun in a fixed position relative to earth. It will be located at the 1. 1 million miles from earth. So the flares can electrify the earths upper atmosphere causing power surges on the ground. The geomagnetic storms can be damaging to Critical Infrastructure on earth. Having advanced warning is critical to us. Joining us tonight, derek pitts, chief astronomer at the franklin institute. Mr. Pitts, always a pleasure. Good to have you with us tonight. This is pretty fascinating stuff, but is it really important for us to monitor the suns activity that would affect our climate . Your thoughts. It absolutely is important for us to monitor the sun in this way. This is the first time that noaa has had an operational space Weather Satellite in orbit and the information that will be gathered by this will be extremely important to helping us protect satellites in orbit around earth and even to help us protect Power Transmission systems here on earth in case theres a very very intense solar storm. So the information gathered along with the images of the earth and the monitoring the weather systems are always vital and always helpful. Why are we doing it now . Why wasnt it done previously . Well, it wasnt done previously because there have been ways for us to make these observations from earth before but it turns out that there was this satellite left over from about a decade ago that happened to have the architecture that would work really well for this particular mission. This particular kind of study. And being able to place the satellite at this location about 930,000 miles away from earth outside the earths Magnetic Field gives us this opportunity to do this really intense study of the solar wind coming in. So with the materials available, the equipment available, and the launch services available, these things come together to make it a right time to do this. Have we seen a lot of changes in the suns activity over the past decades . Weve been learning a lot more about the suns activity over the last decade for sure. And were beginning to learn more things about the sun that we didnt know before. And thats always really exciting. And the more we learn about the sun, the more we can be prepared for any sorts of intense solar storms that happen. While weve been observing over decades, weve been able to see the kind of regular activity that the sun has, but we also dont know everything there is to know about the sun, ed, so it behooves us to want to gather as much information so we can have as complete a picture of how the sun operates as possible. As the chief astronomer at the franklin institute, this is not a political question but who gets credit for this . Well i think the scientists that came up with the idea that we can use this particular satellite architecture left over from then years to do this work. Really should get a lot of the credit for this because they recognize that theres a piece of equipment hanging around that could be used could be pressed into service. So nasa scientists, the noaa scientists and all the other researchers who figure this is a good way to get the information should get credit for this. What do you think the most vital pieces of information is swooer going to get from doing this . Its yet to be discovered. We dont know everything about the sun. The more data we collect about the sun the more we can learn about the sun. I think the most important thing, though there are two important things. One is the Early Warning capability well get from this ed. Well have up to 60 minutes notice of a very intense Solar Magnetic storm heading our way. At the same sometime we have this beautiful 24hour view of earth that they lows us to better track weather systems on the surface and that Early Warning always turns into saved lives. So those are really, really big important points. Would this help us in our Solar Technology . The way that is advancing . And has advanced in this country and the manufacturing of it and whatnot globally . Would this advance that . You know, given that there are two different types of operating systems for electrical generation on board the spacecraft and what we might use here on earth, one might not say there isnt much connection but when you look at the way in which spacecraft is powered with close proximity to the sun or inner solar system solar panels really do work very well. Theres to reason why we shouldnt further pursue the development of a Solar Panel Technology that efficient as the ones on space are can become nearly as efficient here on earth. Uhhuh. Interesting stuff. Did you think this would ever get to where we are right now . I mean whats the next big thing beyond this . Actually the next big thing is the fact that spacex is the company thats launching this spacecraft for noaa nasa and the air force.
