himself and ted cruz who took home 32 delegates to finish at 408. kasich added 75 and marco rubio just six. trump is now more than halfway to the delegates he needs on the first ballot at the convention. 581 still to go. on the democratic side it was a clean sweep for secretary clinton. she won by double digits in florida, north carolina and ohio but notching razor thin victories in missouri and illinois. for much of the night, those two races were too close to call. but nbc news has now declared clinton the apparent winner of each. in missouri she edged out senator sanders by less than 2,000 votes but the big wins elsewhere means she's built on a commanding lead. picking up 363 delegates to sanders 282. she's now about two-thirds of the way to total needed to clinch the nomination. last night, donald trump appeared before a select group of supporters and reporters in what was billed as a press conference, although he took no questions. in the ballroom of his club in palm beach, flanked by his family and his campaign staff, he talked about his poll numbers and he said that those who said he had a ceiling of support don't get it. >> one of the commentators who i'm not particularly fond of, but these are minor details, said but donald trump doesn't get over 50%. and i have to explain to these people they don't understand basic physics, basic mathematics, basic whatever you want to call it. when i don't get over 50, we have four people, right? we have four people. do you understand that? we will some day in the not too distant future if i win, otherwise, it's not going to happen, i have to be honest with you. but apple and all of these great companies will be making their product in the united states. not in china. vietnam and all of -- one of the broadcasters was saying is there anger? i said to him, i'm supposed to say, no, there's not, we love the way that things are working, we love the deal you made with iran it's wonderful. you give them $150 billion we get nothing. we love all the deal, the trade deals are wonderful. you lose $500 billion a year with china. we lose $58 billion a year in terms of imbalance. it's a total ill balance. we don't win anymore. as a country we don't win anymore. they ask, is there anger from your people? there seems -- i said that's anger. they're not angry people. but they want to see the country properly run. >> all along, marco rubio said it would come down to florida and in the end, it did. rubio finished nearly 20 points behind donald trump in his home state. a look at the map shows just how complete trump's victory was. rubio's one bright spot, miami-dade county. and they were looking ahead past tuesday, but in the end the writing was on the wall. >> america is in the middle of a real political storm. a real tsunami. the easiest thing to have done in the campaign is to jump on the anxieties i talked about. to make people angrier, make people more frustrated. but i chose a different route and i'm proud of that. because -- [ applause ] that would have been -- in a year like this, that would have been the easiest way to win. but that is not what's best for america. the politics of resentment against other people will not just leave us a fractured party. they're going to leave us a fractured nation. they're going to leave us as a nation where people literally hate each other because they have different political opinions. after tonight it is clear that while we are on the right side, this year, we will not be on the winning side. while it is not god's plan that i be president in 2016 or maybe ever, and while today my campaign is suspended -- the fact that i have even come this far is evidence of how special america truly is. and all the reason more while we must do all we to ensure that this nation remains a special place. >> rubio's campaign was marked with missteps including that repetitive debate in new hampshire. he acknowledged he regretted going ultra negative on donald trump and not winning began to take that toll. and as of this morn, rubio finishes with winning minnesota, puerto rico and washington, d.c. and by the way in north carolina, ohio and missouri, 59% of rubio voters said they would have chosen ted cruz if only that senator from texas and trump were on the ballot. meanwhile, john kasich celebrated a big win in his home state of ohio last night. he came away with all 66 delegates after getting 47% of the votes compared to trump's 36%. in his victory speech, kasich said he's already looking ahead. >> i'm going to philadelphia. and then i'm going -- i don't know. all over the country. okay? and many of you have travelled around this country trying to help me. you know what? look, this is all i've got, okay? this is all i've got. all i can say is thank you from the bottom of my heart. but i want you to know something. we're going the go -- we are going to go all the way to cleveland and secure the republican nomination. >> by the way when kasich made that comment about going all the way to cleveland, he was in barea, ohio, 16 miles away. in the speech last night, he thanked democratic crossover voters. according to nbc news exit polling, the primary voters who identify as democrats made up 8% of the elect or the rat. 55% of them voted for kasich. 44% of the voters who identified as independents also voted for kasich. last night i talked to voters in suburban cleveland, life long democrats, crossing over. one voter told me her entire family had a meeting and then agreed to vote kasich and many have never voted republican before in their lives and say it wasn't an easy decision because it means they'll be listed as registered republicans now for the next four years. according to bloomberg, kasich has also picked up two high profile operatives. hugh spencer who helped gerald ford get the nomination against ronald reagan. and charlie black who previously advised presidents reagan, george h.w. bush and george w. bush. now, ted cruz waited until late in the evening to speak having pinned his hopes on the results in congressional districts in illinois and missouri. where more convention votes will be decided. meanwhile, a new poll from the morning consult shows cruz is a second choice of 47% of marco rubio's supporters. and he praised rubio extensively last night, hoping to sway the senator's unbound delegates. >> marco is a friend. he's a colleague. he ran a strong, optimistic, positive campaign. his story. the son a bartender, the son of a maid who fled cuba seeking freedom. it's powerful, it's inspirational. marco's story, his passion inspires me. to those who supported marco, who worked so hard, we welcome you with open arms. >> let's go to the democrats now and a few miles away from trump's victory speech last night, hillary clinton emerged at her victory party in west palm beach after the first three states were called in her favor. she called it another super tuesday for her campaign and then took dead at the republican front-runner. >> our commander in chief has to be able to defend our country, not embarrass it. [ cheers and applause ] engage our allies not alienate. them. defeat our adversary, not embolden them. when we hear a candidate for president call for rounding up 12 million immigrants, banning all muslims from entering the united states, when he embraces torture, that doesn't make him strong. it makes him wrong. [ cheers and applause ] we should be breaking down barriers. not building walls. we're not going to succeed by dividing this country between us and them. you know, to be great we can't be small. we can't lose what made america great in the first place. and this isn't just about donald trump. all of us have to do our part. we can't just talk about economic inequality, we have to take on all forms of inequality and discrimination. >> a look at the map in missouri shows how tight the race was with clinton winning st. louis and sanders taking much of the state. in florida, clinton's win was dominant from miami to jacksonville, and much of the panhandle. so clinton won all five states yesterday, despite being outspent by bernie sanders on the airwaves. the sanders campaign spent $1 million more than the clinton camp did in the five contests. despite clinton's overwhelming delegate lead, senator sanders released a statement saying, quote, we remain confident that our campaign is on a path to win the nomination. during the speech last night in phoenix in front of a crowd of more than 7,000, the senator stayed true to the theme from his campaign and joining clinton in going after donald trump. >> i know in our country not everybody agrees with my views on immigration reform and that's fine. we're a democracy. people have different points of view, but what is not acceptable no matter what your point of view is, is to throw racist attacks against mexicans. the reason that donald trump will never be elected preside presidepresident is the american people will not accept insults to mexicans, muslims or women. the american people will not accept a president who insults our veterans. or who several year led the birther effort which was an ugly, ugly attempt to undermine the legitimacy of the presidency of barack obama. >> senator sanders will spend the next day and a half off the trail with his family in arizona. however, that state's primary is one of sentenced an american to court for 15 years with hard lake year. tote warmbier -- otto warmbier was arrested in early january. he was accused of subversion after allegedly trying to steal a propaganda banner from his hotel. president obama is closer to naming a supreme court nominee. it could come as early as today and cory according to reuters will be either sri srinivasan or another one. sri srinivasan won unanimous confirmation by the court. he could be the first asian american, first hindu justice on the court. garland was nominated in 1995 and became chief judge. most senate republicans have vowed not to consider anyone that the president puts forward. if you work in the nation's capital, you are in for a rough commute this morning because the entire d.c. metro rail system, the second largest, was shut down at midnight last night for 29 hours to allow for a system wide safety inspection. the unprecedented shutdown came after a cable fire earlier in week caused massive delays on three lines. the metro is expected to reopen at 5:00 a.m. on thursday. all right, let's turn to business, the markets seem to be in a bit of pause waiting for the announcement from the fed about the interest rates. geoff cutmore, what are you seeing? >> good morning to you. tricky balancing act for yellin. the fed chief has to convince the markets the u.s. economy is doing okay. growth 2.5% and unemployment under 5%. at the same time, though, she doesn't want markets to think interest rates are going up too much this year. and she doesn't want to spook markets so no change in rates expected today. we think that she will walk the tight rope as far as the balance of growth and concerns about the economy. one person who is a little concerned today -- bill ackman, on paper he's lost $1 billion. he invested in a canadian pharma company and they have cut guidance, they have missed their revenue expectations. bill ackman's response, we're going to get a little more involved with this company to protect our investments. $1 billion on paper, that has got to hurt. back to you. >> oh, i would think. geoff cutmore, live from london, thank you. let's get a check on your weather now with nbc meteorologist bill karins. we have to start with illinois. there was this an election there last night, but the weather was so bad. this is unbelievable. bushnell, illinois, where you could hear the sirens. >> yeah, nine reported tornadoes. some of those were big tornados and they were mostly in western illinois as the voting was wrapping up last night. that's what we were afraid of. the storms didn't get to chicago until 11:00 or midnight. we had a lot of large hail reported. golf ball hail, that's a lowering base of the thunderstorm which can at times produce the tornados and it looks like funnel cloud there in the distance. there's some of the large hail we saw yesterday from illinois. so what are with dealing with today? thankfully no severe weather or very little severe weather i should say. we have seen the storms pushing to the north and weakening. we have a lot of rain in wisconsin, as far as states go, has the worst weather. but our friends in duluth, still mid march and still winter. it changed over to the heavy, wet snow in dulutduluth. you will get nailed today and tonight. that's 10 to 12 inches of snow, the biggest snowstorm of the winter in mid march for areas of the upper mid west and northern great lakes. the other story today, if you're flying today, expect a lot of delays especially throughout the great lakes. southern portions of the ohio valley. we will see the winds gusting up to 40 or 50 miles per hour in and around the chicago area. o'hare and midway, a lot of bumpy flights coming in and out. otherwise, late day showers and chris, the southern half of the country, spring break -- all the college students are down there it's beautiful today so they're enjoying it. >> no kidding. thanks. time for sport, we oscar nominated songwriter diane warrick wrote the track. it has an array of female artists like kelly clarkson and lea michele. mrs. obama will deliver a keynote address on women's education programs today at south by southwest festival in austin. the new song will be available for download on itunes at midnight. all right, finally, let's go to some more politics here. john kasich had a lot to celebrate last night after winning his home state of ohio after his victory speech. kasich, his family and much of the audience was buried under a blizzard of confetti. now, according to the campaign staffers, the celebration was really stepped up because -- look at that. that's just incredible. now, it was stepped up because the governor was disappointed in the amount of confetti from a previous event. now, back in february, kasich held his 100th campaign event in new hampshire before the state's republican primary. as you can see, the confetti there was not quite as impressi impressive. i
