Look down toward jfk, the visibility. 30 mile with that southwest wind coming off the waters there, the atlantic which is about 46 degrees, morning. Be aware of that. We also have construction at the lincoln and the holland, but only minor delays, no major issues there. And if you are going onto the Southern State east 28a to 28 closed, construction on the l. I. Developing this morning, a Police Investigation is under officers shot a man several times. Eyewitness News Reporter darla miles is live in butler with the very latest details. Darla. Reporter good morning, lori. This is still a very active investigation here in butler. I want to show you the investigators who are still on the street this morning, taking photographs. The scene is still blocked off at this hour, and there are lots of questions this morning. We do know that the Morris County Prosecutors Office is hanling this investigation. So im going to tell you what we know so far. We have video from last night from when the shooting happened around 7 30. What we know is that officers may have been responding to a call of a breakin, and that is when Butler Police responded to the scene. There were shots fired. A 23yearold man was shot up to four times last night. He did survive. He was taken to st. Josephs hospital in paterson where hes receiving treatment for his injuries. But at this point that is all we know. Again, investigators here at the scene live, you can see they have a massive crime scene in terms of the perimeter and not being able to get close to it as they complete their investigation. We have new details now, the woman who toll police she was attacked in a random slashing admitted overnight that she slashed herself. It happened yesterday in lower manhattan. The 20yearold woman called police, saying that a man grabbed her by the arm and slashed her across the face before calling her a terrorist and then taking off. Police say that she made that whole story up. Shes now at Bellevue Hospital undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. Well, happening today, private Funeral Services will be held for two new york siblings killed in the brussels attacks. 29yearold Alexander Pinczowski and his 26yearold sister sascha will be buried netherlands. They were dutch citizens living in the u. S. They were headed back to new york city when one airport in brussels. Nypd actually warned police in europe about two of the brussels suicide bombers one week before the attacks. Nypds Intelligence Division provided information about khalid and Ibraham El Bakraoui to authorities. The dutch minister says the radical background was then discussed with belgian police, but belgiums federal Police Department denies information was passed on. New this morning, investigators are looking through the debris of an explosion in north jersey that cost a man part of his hand. It happened in dwuttenberg and police say that a man blew off several of his fingers last night inside an apartment on kennedy boulevard. Police also say that theyre still determining the cause of the blast, but they say it is not terror related. 4 35. An nypd lieutenant who was involved in the arrest of a postal worker in brooklyn has been stripped of his gun and badge. 17th. Now, grays says the officers unmarked car nearly hit him while he was working his route in crown heights. After words were exchanged, the plainclothessed officers pulled him away and arrested him. The leunlt who was supervising the arrest has been placed on modified duty. The three other officers have been placed on uniform patrol. Newlyreleased test results are revealing more elevated lead levels in the water in Newark Schools. The latest test focused on eight buildings in the district. Out of 324 Drinking Water samples, 16 showed higher lead levels. Tests were done on nontraditional buildings, including athletic facilities, Charter Schools and Student Centers this. Is just the first phase of a new lead testing strategy in newark. It is 4 36. And youre never more than seven minutes away from weather and traffic. Its down there toward western virginia and down toward Western North carolina. All this slides eastward today and gives us a shower and maybe a thunderstorm later on this afternoon. Temperatures are going to be warm. Were going to be looking at 57 and 60 degrees, and by afternoon well be around 70 again. Parts of the area hit 73. But we will have some showers and a thunderstorm. On monday morning. They are preparing for a new construction pattern. The new construction pattern begins on monday. So youll want to take a easy. You have to go with the newark bay extension of the turnpike or you can head onto alternate roadways to get around this pulaski skyway problem, truck routes 1 and 9. Investigators are taking a closer look at a motel in midtown manhattan after a pane of glass fell from the big. Floor of the Doubletree Hotel and then crashed onto the sidewalk on 51st street between lexington and third avenues yesterday. One person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. 4 41. And federal charges have been filed against a man accused of pulling out a bb gun at a checkpoint outside the u. S. Capitol. 66yearold larry dawson was shot by a capitol guard monday afternoon and critically hurt after he drew the weapon. Now, dawson was shot by police during the incident. He remains in the hospital. Dawson was under an order to stay away from the area after an incident in october where police say that he disrupted a house session. The faa is trying to figure out what caused emergency slide to fall off a jumbo jet while the plane was in mid air. Andrea self heard a loud bang right before her house shook. She walked out her front door to see this. The faa confirmed that it somehow dropped off an atlas air boeing 767 as it was on a no one on the ground or on the plane was hurt. Wow pretty scary to see that coming to the ground. Whoa what is that . 4 42. Meteorologist bill evans joins us with the exclusive accuweather forecast. Always wanted a slip and slide, but not like that. Exactly, no. Heres whats going on this morning, we have skies that are cloudy as we look down toward the corner of fifth avenue and 59th street. Well, we can see 432 park right here and the next building that is going up, i dont know if you noticed it right here, its actually going to be taller than 432 park, and it will be done i think its done by this time next year. So this is the tallest building in the western hemisphere for about nine more months. Its growing here in manhattan. Heres whats going on this morning. We have skies that are cloudy. We have route 66 degrees. We have a humidity in the moderate range of 75 . Southwest wind at 5, and look at that pressure, 29. 75. Now, the pressure can tell you everything you need to know about whats going on with the weather in that when its blow 30. 00, the atmosphere is on the way, we got some wind on the way, we got a cold front coming our way because the barometer is dropping. High yesterday was 73 degrees. Well hit that again today. 66 now at wrightstown and sayreville and 62 around toms river and 66 poughkeepsie. These numbers are way warm for this hour of the day. So it should be about 40 in the city to about 30 north and west, but that southerly wind is making it warm, but creating these problems with the visibility. So if youre traveling along the Southern State, youre at fire island, your sunrise highway, montauk highway, you got issues here with this fog. Its the southwest wind thats warm coming over these 46 degree temperature waters of the atlantic. And so you got that dense fog that is going to be out here this morning. Also were going to be watching out for some winds today that will be gusting up ahead of this front around 35 miles an hour. So theres a high wind watch. You gotta be on the lookout for that. But the front itself will bring a shower and thunderstorm later on today. By 8 00 we kind of drop to 60, but its going to warm back up with sunny breaks. Noontime 65. A couple of popup showers. And here comes right after school 70degree temperatures. 72, but a popup thunderstorm in here. So after school today, there could be, you know, some lightning around, that sort of thing. So if youre out there on the soccer field, la crosse field, baseball field, you know, all that, there could be that popup shower. Then look at saturday morning. Theyre setting up the pulaski for a new construction project, so that project is going to start, the new pattern is going to start on monday morning. And i have to add a g to morning there. I just heard ken say more thankin. Were also looking at the george Washington Bridge, underneath the apartments heading to the lower level until 5 00 a. M. , you do have that construction going on. And the centers for Disease Control expects the zika virus to hit the United States much harder than its present state and they hope a oneday summit will prepare state and local there are more than 150 travel related cases already and zika is expected to spread here as the weather warms up and mosquitoes emerge. Its already spreading in the Virgin Islands and American Samoa and the cdc says puerto rico could soon see hundreds of thousands the Global Nuclear summit convenedded by president obama in washington has a special session today on preventing isis and other extremists from obtaining nuclear material. More than 50 governments and International Organizations are attending the twoday gathering. It comes just a week after isis terrorists in brussels set off bombs to kill dozens and wound more than 300. 4 48. An autopsy being performed on a newborn baby girl whose body was found in a bag on long island. Police were called to the home on walnut street in glenhead yesterday morning. Officers found a 20yearold woman with severe bleeding which was later determined to be from childbirth. Officers then returned to the home an first down the full term baby in a bag on the back deck. No charges have been filed at this point. And Community Leaders in this morning after the Police Officer charged teenager was given a new job by the citys police union. Officer Jason Van Dyke is now facing firstdegree murder charges after being accused of shooting 17yearold laqon mcdonald 16 times. And after being suspended from the force, a Chicago Police union hired him as a janitor. Now people in the community are calling for the head of that union to resign. This is not the right message that you should be sending to chicago residents this is an inyourface to the community in general, chicago, and particularly the africanamerican community. Well, the head of the Police Union Says this is not the first time that hes hired an officer who was suspended without pay. But Many Community activists say the decision to hire van dyke sets back any progress to improve Community Relations with Chicago Police. Also 30 people are hospitalized in texas after the bus was carrying a High School Track team and the bus did not have seat belts. Police say the bus right tires left the road and when the driver overcorrected, the bus flipped repeatedly before coming to rest in an open field. 4 49. This is the last day on the job for nasa astronaut scott kelly. After two decades, hes decided to keep his feet on the ground, the new jersey native, i should say, sent out this tweet thanking the space agency for an incredible 20 years. Kelly started out as a shuttle pilot. He spent a total 520 days in space which is an american record. Hes still going to take part in the research of his last mission, thats a 340day stay in orbit, youll recall. Nasa is studying the effects of space life on the human body. Being that hes going to leave, do you do anything, vandalize one of the space vehicles . And what are they going to do, fire him . His character is far too fine for that. Hes a great guy. The new construction pattern will begin monday morning, so the entire pulaski skyway will be closed. Your alternates, new jersey tyke, newark bay extension or you can head onto truck routes routes 1 and 9. This is a look at route 3 the bottom of your screen, western tolls in the western spur of the turnpike. You can see the turnpike right there. No major problems to report as you go through that spot. A state parks, Historic Sites and campgrounds saw a 5 increase in attendance last year. Estimated 65. 3 million visits were made. Thats up a degree from last hour. Now, couple of things going on here. Southfacing shores are going to be cooler. Norwalk 53, 53 west hampton, 54 east hampton. We see those look at though inland numbers. Look at poughkeepsie, 68 degrees. And were looking at 57 white plains to 67 in the park. Couple of things going on here this morning. With that wind you see that fog around jfk at the airport there, and at islip. So that means like macarthur airport, republic, all those could have an all of us could have an issue, sunrise highway, Southern State, all of that could be a problem there, fire island. Just be aware of that this morning. That. High wind watch in effect from saturday night into sunday. Were going to talk about that. And were following a developing story out of new man several times. It happened on bellevue avenue in butler. Eyewitness News Reporter darla miles is live on the scene with the details on the suspect. Darla, good morning. Reporter good morning, ken. What we know about the suspect so far is that he is 23 years old. He was shot at least four times yeah, at least four times, and investigators are still here trying to piece together exactly what happened. Weve actually seen them here in the middle of the street this morning. Weve seen them collecting evidence and taking photographs. The shooting happened around 7 30 last night here on bellevue avenue in butler. Police may have been responding to calls of a breakin. At some point police came to the scene, they responded, they encountered the suspects. Shots were fired by an unknown number of officers. And this morning were still trying to find out if this happened inside of the home or outside on the street here in bellevue. But here it is close to 12 hours almost after this incident, and all of bellevue now, we know that the Morris County Prosecutors Office is handling this investigation, so we do expect to get more information as the day progresses. We know that the suspect was taken to st. Josephs hospital in paterson. At this hour his condition is unknown. Reporting live in butler, darla miles, channel 7 Eyewitness News. Darla, thank you. At 5 03, new this morning, a big aboutface by the woman who says she was slashed in lower manhattan. We learned overnight that the Woman Told Police she cut herself. The 20yearold woman initially told police that a man grabbed her by the arm and slashed her across the face. She had also said that her attacker had called her a terrorist. Well, police are now saying she made the whole story up. Shes now at Bellevue Hospital undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. A driver whose car was t boned by police rushing to an injuries. Bergen county prosecutor will release more information on the crash later today. The tragedy started with a Police Pursuit in paramus. A motorcyclist who fled a police stop there ended up and as other police units headed to that scene, this one crashed head on into the side of a car driven by a 67year old man from hackensack. His name has not been released. Theres traffic and plenty of it, and its fast. Even though theres a speed limit of 25, people do 40, 50, its bad. This is not the first fatality on this road. And as for the motorcycle driver, hes being treated for his injuries at Hackensack University medical center. His bail was set at 50,000. 5 05. This is the moment when 7month old asheer simmons was reunited with his family. See, the infant was taken yesterday from the king of prussia plaza mall. Thats just outside philly. Police say the alleged kidnapper walked up to the childs mother and asked if she could hold him. Then she took off. Well, asheer was found about can you imagine the terror for this poor mom . The woman accused of taking him has not yet been identified, but police says she does not know the family. Charges against her are now pending. Thank goodness for a happy ending. Turning to politics and the battle for new york is heating up, both democratic president ial campaigns have events planned for today yeah. Hillary clinton is upstate, Bernie Sanders campaign will host a roundtable discussion this morning and hes adding plenty of star power. Bernie sanders make ago prediction that he will take new york, hillary clinton, though, of course, remaining confident. One thing is for sure, new york is a prize to be won. Take a look at this video. This was last night in the bronx. Bernie sanders spent the evening calling for a revolution. His campaign against the establishment continues today. The Sanders Campaign will host a womens roundtable conversation at row house in harlem featuring actor rosario dawson. This comes as a Quinnpiac University poll has clinton leading 54 to 42 . If there is a large voter turnout, we will win, and if we win here in new york, we are going to make it to the white house. [ cheers and applause ] i have earned 9 million votes in this election. Yesterday where he sat down with rnc chair Reince Priebus in a closeddoor meeting. Now, the break from the campaign trail came after trumps comments during a forum about punishing women for abortion. The rnc says that the meeting was scheduled before the controversy. It was a very good meeting, very good people, very actually, a terrific meeting, i think, and its really a unity meeting. Well, trump also took time in the Nations Capital to meet with Foreign Policy experts where he says they discussed his refusal to rule out dropping nuclear bombs. A couple of showers are creeping through toms river now, headed toward barnagut inlet, right there around little egg harbor. The front itself is back here in the western part of the state. And were learning more about that shooting at a bus station in virginia. A Virginia State trooper who was wounded has died. Officials say that trooper chad dermyer was shot by a man he had spoken to briefly at a greyhound station in richmond yet. Well, dermyer was taking part in a Training Exercise at the station. Binghampton University Says one of two other people wounded in the shooting is a member of its womens track team. Her injuries are not life threatening. 5 13. Prosecutors say theyve caught five more San Francisco Police Officers who sent racist and homophobic Text Messages even as 14 other officers were under investigation for the same thing. The new round of Text Messages includes derogatory references to the citys shrinking black population, along with asians, lesbians, gays and transgender people. The San Francisco Police Department is already under federal investigation after complaints of racial bias. The impact that it has is our ability to present evidence, our ability to prosecute cases and, frankly, now the possibility that were going to have to dismiss cases. Several hundred criminal cases are now under review for signs of police bias. There are reports this morning that north korea has fired a Ballistic Missile into the waters off its east coast. We first reported this on wednesday. Surveillance video shows the car jump a curb in the fordham section and then plow into four people on a busy sidewalk. Three of the victims ended up in the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. Cited for failure to yield to 5 21. This morning were seeing the damage left behind by a tornado in mississippi. That tornado touched down near the Alabama State line, trapping a teen in his truck as he tried to seek shelter. The 16yearold says that he was forced off the road by the winds and was trapped in a ditch while the tornado kicked up power lines and debris all around him. At 5 32, developing this morning, police remain on the scene right now after a Police Involved shooting in new jersey. That happened on bellevue avenue in butler. Eyewitness News Reporter darla miles live on the scene with the details on the suspect. Darla. You right now that its unclear whether or not this shooting happened outside or inside of a home here on bellevue avenue, but outside this morning is where we have seen investigators taking photographs this morning, searching for evidence with their flashlights on the ground. This is what we know so far. There may have been a call for a breakin around 7 30 last night on bellevue avenue in butler. When the police arrived, they encountered a 23yearold man. At some point the officers drew their weapons and fired off multiple shots, striking the suspect at least four times. His condition is unknown this morning, but we do know that he was taken to st. Josephs hospital in paterson to be treated for his injuries. Now, the Morris County Prosecutors Office is handling this investigation, and we have been working to get more information about this shooting all morning long, and were going to continue to bring you updates all morning long. It happened in guttenberg. Police say that a man blew off several of his fingers last night inside an apartment on kennedy boulevard. Police are still determining the cause of the blast, but they say it is not terror related. Also new this morning, and the woman who told police that she was attacked in a random slashing admitted overnight that she slashed herself. It happened yesterday in lower manhattan. The 20yearold woman called police, saying that a man grabbed her by the arm and slashed her across the face before calling her a terrorist and taking off. Police say that she made the whole story up and shes at Bellevue Hospital now undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. 5 cloo 34. An nypd lieutenant who was involved in the arrest of a postal worker in brooklyn has been stripped of his gun and badge. See, part of the arrest of glenn grays was caught on video back on march 17th. Grays says the officers unmarked car nearly hit him while he was just working his route in crown heights. They exchanged some words and the plainclothessed officers pulled him away and arrested him. Supervising the arrest has now been placed on modified duty. The three other officers involved have been placed on uniform patrol. Private Funeral Services will be held for two new york attacks. 29yearold Alexander Pinczowski and his 26yearold sister sascha will be buried in the netherlands. They were dutch citizens who lived here in the u. S. They were heading back to new york city when one of the bombs went off at the airport in brussels. The nypd warned police in europe about two of the brussels suicide bombers a week before the attacks. The nypds Intelligence Division provided information about khalid and Ibrahim El Bakraoui to dutch authorities. A dutch minister says the brothers radical background was then discussed with belgiums police but the belling yam Police Department denies the information ever got passed onto them. Disturbing test results have been released showing more elevated lead levels in the water in Newark Schools. Initial tests done on eight billings in the district showed the tests were done on nontraditional buildings, including athletic facilities, Charter Schools and Student Centers. Its the moment a cruise boat slammed into a pier in san diego. Now, the boat was carrying 144 people, seven were hurt, three people were taken to the hospital, but their injuries are not considered life threatening. The crash also caused heavy damage to the boat and the pier. Investigators say a mechanical malfunction left the boat unable to stop. Wow its 5 41. An autopsy being performed on a newborn baby girl found in a bag outside a home on long island. Now, police were called to the home on walnut street in glen head yesterday. Officers found a 20yearold woman with severe bleeding which was later determined to be from childbirth. So officers then returned to the home and thats when they found the fullterm baby in a bag on the deck in the back and the baby was unresponsive. No charges have been filed at this point. Well, a man accused of pulling out a bb gun at a checkpoint outside the u. S. Capitol earlier this week is now facing federal charges. Tennessee was shot by a capitol guard on monday afternoon an was critically hurt after he drew his weapon. Well, dawson was under an order to stay away from the area after an incident back in october where police say that he disrumented a house session yelling he was a prophet of god. 5 41. Lawmakers in New Hampshire tried to put an end to revenge porn and its devastating effects. The bill would punish those who post private sexuallyexplicit images with the intention of harassing, threatening or coercing the person depicted. Advocates say the bill is common sense protection against predators and one woman threatened by her exhusband agrees. To this day i dont know where those images have ended up or whose hands theyve gotten into. Its something that i have to live with everyday of my life. The person that has those images has control. And if theyre use thag to maintain control to destroy somebody, this will take care of that. That will allow us to from happening. Yesterday activists in asheville hit the streets looking for businesses to agree to add their ownend iser neutral bathrooms. The group says it hopes to start a movement that will eventually lead to the state repealing the new law. Absolutely 100 in personal support of what theyre doing, the legislation.
