From economic to Mental Health there are many reasons why people are homeless and yet there is a growing problem of homelessness among young people. Y2y Harvard Square is an organization founded to combat adults. W2y provides beds and coupling from living on the streets. Joining me this morning are Sarah Rosencrans and sam greenberg, the cofounders of y2y Harvard Square. Thank you for coming in. Us. How did Youth Homelessness come to your attention . Sure, since we worked at the Harvard Square homeless shelter for adults while in college and while we were there, were seeing were seeing more young people come through and becoming frustrated with the fact that we could not help them properly and we begin speaking to other Community Members and learning about the issue. And you both went to harvard and grated a year ago, you said. Yeah. And came up with this and was the scope of the problem just unbelievable, sam . Honestly, it was. And for us realizing that, you know, there are most conservative estimates say 600 homeless young people experiencing homelessness in Greater Boston and only 12 beds december and for us, that was a staggering statistic and realizing that young people didnt have safe places to go and that did shock us. Its called y2y Harvard Square. Uhhuh. And how did the idea come to fruition . And really, it was a process of about two or three years and it was talking to different Community Members and people kept saying we need young beds for young people and we realized that students are well equipped to run a shelter, specifically for people their own age. And they understand each exactly. And tell us about the Homeless Youth you have been working with and how do they become homeless . I think what we learned is that young people become homeless for many reasons and they become homeless because they age out of the foster care system and have no support or nowhere to g. We know that locally and nationally, many become homeless because they transgender sexual and they are kicked out of their homes for their Sexual Identity and orientation and young people in the juvenile Justice System and have abuse of families face homelessness as well spiral well and there is a diverse array and we think its critical that young people have safe places to go no matter what the reason for their homelessness. Absolutely. And there are many different reasons. And what is the mission of y2y Harvard Square . Tell us the mission. And that is to provide a safe place for young people and a path out of homelessness and there is an idea that young people shouldnt be homeless and its bringing together the lows of different young people to find solutions to homelessness. And you provide other services besides that . And thats right. Were entirely student run. And we provide student Case Management and Harvard Law School students who do legal literacy, art program and creative expression and what we try and do is whatever a guest identifies as their needs or goals, we really try and provide a Wonderful Program for them. And do you have to be a student to help out . No, the Leadership Group is students but we have on every 200 volunteers and welcome people from students and any other Community Members. And what do we do . Do you have a website . Its y2 yorks has been order y2y harvardsquare. Org and it helps the it has been a Community Project and we appreciate all types of support.
