In times of crisis and disaster the red cross is always there helping families find shelter after a fire, responding to natural disasters where people have lost everything. And using life skills life saving skills to save someones life or give the gift of life with a blood donation. The American Red Cross is designated the month of march as red cross month, a time to recognize the everyday heroes who help those in need. And judge Renee Cardwell hughes, ceo of American Red Cross of pennsylvania. Thank you for being here. Its a pleasure. Full disclosure, were good friends, been good friends for a long time. Judge, tell us what you want people to be aware of as we recognize red cross month. Well, this is an exciting time for us going all the way back to 1943 the president every year has declared march red cross month. So there are three things that i need for people to know. Every two minutes someone needs life saving blood. So if you donate blood this month, you actually can touch three lives. Every eight minutes someone loses their home to disaster. The red cross responds to disaster by the power of volunteers, so if you have time to donate, to help your neighbor, you make our Community Better and stronger. And if you dont have time to donate or you dont have time to give blood and it only takes five minutes to give blood, you can make a financial donation because the red cross has been an integral part of our lives since 1881. But to keep it going we need the community support. You talk about the integral part that volunteers have as part of the red cross. Tell me about the training of volunteers. For somebody who wants to come in and help out but he doesnt know what to do or how to do it, tell me what the red cross does to train these folks and the kind of commitment youre looking for from them. Well, this is a fantastic time to join us. When you sign up for the red cross, what well do is sit and talk with you, what are your talents, what are your skills. For example, for you id want you to help us with all of our media, but what if your talent is cooking . We can use you there. If your talent is administrati e administrative, we need you there. Event planning, we need you there. Whatever your skill is. But if you want to be one of what i call my everyday heroes who get out of the bed at 2 00 in the morning and go help your neighbor in time of need, we will teach you everything you need to know. In fact, were having this month a disaster institute. So if you register to volunteer, then you can go to classes. And we have classes every month that teach you how to be a red cross superhero, to go help your neighbors in times of need. Nothing you need to know will not be provided to you. And so those are a lot of negatives. Lets flip the script, everything you need well provide you so you can be a red cross superhero. I cant tell you the number of stories weve done over the years since ive been anchoring news when the red cross is typically the first ones there, or they follow the police, they arrive just at the same time the police does. But is there an area where you have special needs or an area we have the biggest need where you can use volunteers or whatever it is . The biggest need is always disaster responders. So if youre willing to help at times of disaster, we always need you. Even if you cant respond every day. We can work around your schedule so that you can volunteer with us. If they go to our website, redcross. Org, we list all the different jobs where disaster responder is the biggest one. And of course everyone can give blood. For more information on how you can help the red cross just go to our website at nbc10.
