Reporter this behemoth by the beach a monument to survivors of Superstorm Sandy is a gift from the tilt up concrete association, a Nonprofit Trade Organization to the borough of highlands, new jersey, which is now demanding it be removed. Little more than 3 months after it was built. I dont like it. Its ugly. Reporter but its not look of this half milliondollar monument with the roof that could make it go the way of the berlin wall. No. The problem is, no one bothered to get a permit from the States Department of environmental protection. Highlands mayor frank nolan spoke to us by speaker phone. How did it get built without the proper permit . I think it was something that was done and just wasnt realized by either the borough or the organization. So i would tell you that, you know, we definitely have some blame in there. The buck stops here at my desk. Reporter highlands has sent a letter to the concrete trade association declaring, quote, the borough demands that tilt up immediately and unconditionally remove the structure. The state says highlands may still apply for a permit but the borough has not made such a request. The mayor says the monument could be moved to another location without facing the wrecking ball. Some homeowners on Sandy Hook Bay would, like, to get their views back but not Everyone Wants it torn down. Should leave it there. Around here in highlands we appreciate it.
