The evidence shows blood on his sneakers and clothing and he was the individual that was identified by the correction officer as the assailant. Reporter sources tell cbs 2 news the officer was manually unlocking a cell for an inmate when he was nut a choke hold and then held to the ground. Two other inmates helped hold him down while they slashed his face and body. After the attack, they returned to their cells. The officer was transported to the hospital with several lacerations. He says the assault shows the lack of punishment for violent inmates and is calling for action. Im thankful that the correctional officer is alive. A prison guard remains in the hospital this morning after Officials Say he was ambushed by inmates. Investigators say the group repeatedly slashed him, nearly knocked him unconscious. This morning, the victim, an officer, is recovering and his union is furious this even happened. His face and head slashed and bloodied. The inmate that perpetrated the attack, the evidence showed that he had blood on the sneakers and clothing and he was the individual that was identified by the correction officer as the assailant. Reporter the Department Says it happened yesterday afternoon on Rikers Island. Officer calderon was unlocking a cell when an inmate grabbed him from behind in a choke hold, bringing him to the floor. Thats when they say two other inmates helped hold him down while they slashed him. The officer was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition. Sources say he works in a division of rikers that handles young adults 18 to 21 years old and has been on the job for three years. I am thankful that the correction officer is alive. Its unfortunate that i do believe as the president of this organization that the there will be a correction an inmate because theres no penalty for what they do. So what police are trying to figure out this morning is whether the driver even realized that they struck the woman here last night because they simply kept on going. Police say the driver who struck the woman left her in the busy intersection for dead. Other drivers at first not even realizing what was in the middle of the street. I stopped right there right next to it because it looked dangerous. And then i see that its a person. Reporter she was the first to stop her car and call police for help after driving up to the remains on main street near casino boulevard in flushing around 8 30 last night. Police believe the woman who had no id on her had been hit by a private bus earlier in the night and the driver just kept going. I couldnt believe that cars were actually trying to go over the body. Its incredible. Reporter investigators on the scene for hours trying to to figure out who initially struck her. No human being deserves such a horrible, horrible, horrible death. But were told that the officer needed more than 20 stitches after this attack here at Rikers Island. His face and head slashed and bloodied, a day at work landed correction officer Raymond Calderon in the hospital after inmates allegedly attacked him. The inmate that perpetrated the attack, the evidence shows that he had blood on his sneaker, blood on his clothing and he was the individual that was identified by the correction officer as the assailant. Reporter the Department Says it happened around 4 30 yesterday afternoon on Rikers Island. Source ises tell us officer calderon was unlocking a cell when an inmate grabbed him from behind in a choke hold, bringing him to the floor. Thats when they say two other inmates helped hold him down while they slashed him. The officer was taken to the condition. Sources say he works in a division of rikers that handles young adults 18 to 21 years old and has been on the job for three years. I am thank that will the officer is i am thankful that the officer is alive. Its unfortunate that i believe as the president of the this organization that there will be a officer killed at the hands of an inmate because theres no penalty for what they do. We can confirm at this hour that Connecticut State Police are assisting the nypd because of the possibility that the bus continued on to connecticut after leaving the scene here. Police were all over main street as they worked to determine what happened in the moments leading up to that woman being hit.
