40's. some of the mid 50's on cape cod this morning. you can see a lot of clouds backing in from the ocean right now. we've got high pressure to our north which is trying to give us the sunshine but cloud cover to today. there is joaquin now moving finally away from bermuda. i think we're locked in the clouds through noontime. notice there could be a little bit of drizzle or scattered light showers mostly in southeastern massachusetts but to the north and west we'll brighten it up as we get into the afternoon. the cloudiest skies through lunchtime, breaks of sunshine this afternoon. brighter the farther north and west you go. it's another kind of cool day. temperatures holding pretty close to 60 degrees a little bit cooler right along the coastline. we're going to warm up in the forecast. we're going to talk more about that coming up. right now out to the roads. in for olessa this morning. we say good morning to kevin brennan. kevin: thank you very much. overnight work crew s is what we're talking about right now. should be picked up by 5:00 a.m. so far so good downtown by the zakim bridge. they just picked up work crews on the northbound side. looking pretty good southbound from somerville down through that stretch. the rest of downtown route 1 northbound off the tobin bridge after the city square tunnel. got work crews there. and also on the mass pike both directions between the allston/brighton tolls and route 93. now further south, you've got work crews here on route 3 between route 18 and 93. they're already in the process of picking up. same with the crews on 9 both directions by route 24. and 138 in canton. erika. erika: kevin, thanks so much. breaking overnight. one person is dead after an overnight car crash in somerset. it happened on lafayette street. two utility poles were also taken down by the crash. emily: right now debris lifted from the atlantic is giving clues in the search for a missing cargo ship with new englanders on board. the ship known as "el faro" disappeared near the bahamas on thursday while hurricane joaquin was raging. a distress call indicates the taking on water. it had been en route to puerto rico from jacksonville, florida. search crews found a life ring with the name of the ship on it. they also found shipping containers, but none of tha proves that the ship went down. dylan meklin from maine is among the five new englanders on the boat. friends are anxiously waiting to hear from him. >> you immediately think about the worst, but they're strong kids. emily: tote maritime, the defending its decision to authorize the voyage. the company says joaquin was just a tropical storm at the time, and crew members are equipped to handle changing erika: right now south carolina is under a state of emergency amid epic flooding. this is just one of hundreds of rescues in the fast-moving floodwaters that have just swamped parts of the state. we're talking about 24 inches of rain in some spots; it's just a mind-boggling number. at least seven deaths are now being blamed on this rainstorm. roads buckled. today emergency workers will go door to door in columbia checking on people trapped by the rising waters. this mother and infant daughter were plucked from their home by a coast guard helicopter. just one of the rescues carried out by coast guard and national guard crews in south carolina. another big concern with all this rain-- drinking water. all of the capitol of columbia-- 375,000 people-- now under a boil-water order. emily: right now several members of a rowing team are recovering as we get new video of their trouble on the river. they were competing in a regatta when conditions suddenly got dangerous. the eye's sera congi is live in lowell with that new video and the rescue that saved them. sera: emily. those high school rowers found themselves in very cold, very treacherous waters after a race on the merrimack river took a turn for the worse. that four-man team ditched the boat as water started spilling in. minutes later it happened again to a team of nine girls. a shift in wind direction created dangerous swells, taking the boat down. >> they went stern first. they just kept going down. sera: the girls were rescued. three of them were treated for minor hypothermia. the textile river regatta was canceled halfway through. some of the swells there weere as much as four-feet high. live in lowell this morning, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. erika: thank you. a new hampshire man is under investigation after this arsenal of weapons was taken from his home. pelham police say 500-pound mark schlagel was naked when they arrested him. neighbors tell us he claimed he'd shot four people who had broken into his home and cut a hole in the closet. but officers did not find anyone in mark schlagel's closet, only bullet holes. they also found several guns, and more than 10,000 pounds of ammunition. neighbors say they didn't feel safe living under schlagel. >> it was scary because he was right above us. he was just shooting everywhere. the bullets could have went down through my floor, hit my son, hit my husband, hit me. erika: schalgel was charged with felony reckless conduct. emily: right now an investigation is underway after a deadly fire in athol. one man was killed when flames broke out at the morton meadows housing complex saturday night. the building is managed by the athol housing authority. the victim's name hasn't been released. several other people were burned out by the fire. an investigation is also underway tonight into this fire at a home in waltham. there were people inside this building when the flames broke out, but they all make it out safely. the home was completely destroyed. the people who live there lost everything. firefighters say it appears the flames started on the first floor of the house and then quickly spread. right now a tough new crackdown may be on the way for massachusetts drivers. the eye's antoinette antonio is live in needham with the changes that could be in the works. texting and driving is already antoinette: erika, we can technically be talking on the phone and be behind the wheel at the same time. illegal. massachusetts state lawmaker s further. tomorrow there will be several hearings on proposals that would require drivers to use hands-free technology behind the wheel like bluetooth. the only exception would be emergency situations. right now several neighboring states including new hampshire, connecticut, vermont, and new york have hands-free oregon shootings a day before the killings. the f.b.i. put out the warning to philly area schools even though the threat is somewhat vague. alerts were set out to students as a precaution. erika: and this morning we're learning new chilling details about the horror in that classroom in oregon. emily: hear from one of the heros who put his life on the line to save others. and the final words the gunman uttered to the victims. erika: linkedin is now at the center of a major lawsuit and has been ordered to pay up how you can cash in. cindy: after a dreary and chilly weekend, we are expecting a parts of southern new hampshire, western massachusetts. look at the temperatures. jaffrey down to 33. it is 34 in keene. this is where we could have a morning. boston 49. once you get into southeastern massachusetts with more winds stirring, more cloud cover. temperatures not as chilly now. we'll hang on to a lot of cloud cover today. the farther north and west you there will be. but it will be a breezy, cool day. winds out of the northeast 10-15. our high temperatures in the upper 50's to around 60 at the coast. we're getting a little bit more sunshine north and west. we could sneak into the lower 60's. not bad. here you see on future cast through noontime a lot of clouds hanging tight. not out of the question in southeastern massachusetts there could be spotty drizzle. if you are down this way, probably not the worst idea to have an umbrella with you just so you can protect yourself from that patchy drizzle. notice as we get toward late afternoon and this evening though, still hanging on to the clouds in southeastern massachusetts. but some breaks of sunshine farther to the north and west. overnight tonight, we are going to see the skies clear up a little bit. temperatures will be mildest where we hang on to the most clouds on the cape. otherwise down to around 40 degrees in orange. mid 40's in boston. we're going to brighten things up for you tomorrow. tomorrow looks like a brighter day overall. the temperatures responding into the upper 60's we go. notice how we clear out the skies and then here during the afternoon, a good amount of sunshine for you. brightening up. less wind in the forecast on tuesday. wednesday looks like the warmest day of the week with tons of sunshine. look at that. temperatures up around 70 degrees. a bit of a sea breeze will keep us cooler on the cape but weds we looks loob the warmest day of the week. dry on thursday. as we head toward friday that is our next chance for rain. we're actually going to see some showers coming on in. but if you have plans to be heading out north to check out the foliage, it is about that time here. it's running late this year. starting to see some change across central and northern new england. a little bit behind what is considered average. showers coming in later friday. should be moving out on saturday morning. so if you are weekend plans it looks like clearing skies west, mass pike flowing nicely. framingham all the way into boston. take you about 23 minutes from route 9 heading towards those allston/brighton tolls. up to the north, routes 3, 93, 95, all a nice felony emily: jury selection is set to begin this week in the trial of a teenager accused of raping and danvers high school. phillip chism was 14 when he was charged in the murder of colleen ritzer. her body was found covered in leaves behind the school allegedly next to a note reading, "i hate you all." chism is being tried as an adult. jury selection begins on wednesday. erika: right now marathon this past spring. he had been deeply involved in fundraising for the disease. cindy, it looks like a lot of fun. cindy: a very special cause too. raising awareness of batten disease. a lot of people have no idea what it is. a couple years ago i had no idea what it was ear. a great event. the weather held out as well. it was uncertain how the weekend would turn out but we had a decent day yesterday. the winds are finally coming down as well slowly. still seeing sustained winds 10 to near 20 miles per hour along the coastline. gradually the winds will continue to subside. we'll warm up the ems by wednesday back up to around 70 degrees if you can believe it. our next chance for rain isn't coming in until friday but it is is still flooding rain right now. down through if carolinas particularly coastal parts of south carolina where they have had close to two feet of rain in some areas since the weekend here. also we're watching huff cane joaquin. you can see it is moving away from bermuda here. it is slowly weakening. you can see around here generally quiet with clearer skies to our north. we do have a lot of clouds here in southern new england. and we still have that component in off the ocean. overall, it will be a cloudier, cooler day. we're starting out in the 40's and 30's this morning. looking for high temperatures in the upper 50's and lower 60's. now we are going to see some breaks of sunshine. the brightest skies will be in southeastern massachusetts. we're going to hang on to a fair amount of cloud cover today. even though we're getting up to 60 degrees that is warmer than it has been all month long. we've been stuck in the 50's every day this month. it looks like warmer temperatures are finally working on in. today is likely the coolest of
