Center well, good morning, kim. Were onion south and the road are like jason said very slick. There is some ice and the roads are covered even though there have been multiple passes by plows. Now, we do we did see a line of semi truck trailers onion north so be very careful on that. We also did see a car spun out on 581 south near best buy. So people are having trouble getting around. It is not safe to be out on the the roads. The other thing is make sure that you leave a lot of room between you and the next car ahead of you. If you do have to be out on the road. The visibility is not good especially here onion south and 81 north. So much sure you slow down. Take your time. But i will tell you that it is reminiscent of alaska out here. Some beautiful snow. So stay off the roads. But make sure you get out and enjoy some enjoy some of this beautiful day. Now, we need to go to wdbj7 eamon omeara in blacksburg. Thanks so much, garrett. We have clearly been having a lot of snow in the new river valley across the state. This intersection behind me is right off of highway 460. Leads right into christiansburg christiansburg. Marriage area but as you can see there is still a lot of snow in the middle of this intersection despite plows going by repeatedly throughout the morning. I have been seeing a lot of places like this throughout the area. State police and vdot are recommending that if you can stay home today do so. The roads are slick and as i showed you there are big piles that is likely why vdot is reporting disabling crashed cards on the interstate in montgomery and Pulaski County. If you have to drive make sure you have a chargeed cell phone and warm car and dont count on Public Transportation this morning. Blacksburg has canceled service this morning and may not continue it later this afternoon. Luckily for very tech students they dont need to worry about. That the school has canceled all classes today and tonight due to the snow. Now, as you can see the snow is still coming down. But i will say that the flakes are a lot smaller than what they were even just an hour ago as i have been doing all morning i just measured the the snow. It came in at just under 7 inches. So we are seeing more accumulation here throughout the morning. Again, kimberly, the roads in the new Roanoke Valley are looking pretty rough. If you have a sick day and you can stay home and not go to work i would recommend probably using it. That is good advice and having an emergency cell phone. There are reports of accidents so be cautious if you have to head out there this morning. Turn now to meteorologist Leo Hirsbrunner and find out how much more snow were going to so. Upwards of 6 inches already. Several more to go before things start to transition more over sleet and that starts to compact our accumulation. Looking out from our Mill Mountain camera visibility because of the snow falling heavily. 20 degrees in roanoke and 17 in blacksburg that is why the snow is very light and fluffy. Up towards bristol or down towards bristol up to to 25 degrees. That is where the warm air continues to build in from washington, d. C. At 20 degrees. Kind of see this speeding in from the southwest to the northeast. More rain down towards tennessee. That is the warmer air and low Pressure Center and that drives in later on. Today a little closer in we have the deeper colors. That is where were finding the snowfall moderate to heavy now and those areas you want to keep that in mind. Down and you see accumulation adding up quickly. Western part of the county seeing heavy snow. Franklin seeing heavy snow now. You can see up towards parts of the Roanoke Valley light snow activity western sections a little more towards the city. All the time we see that heavy snow. May see it lighten up and shut down for periods of time as well. Talking about the timing what were going to see with the snow, sleet, freezing rain we turn things over to meteorologist Lindsey Anderson. That is the big thing that were going to watch for today. When the transition happens from snow, sleet, ice, freezing rain and then just plain old rain. Lets start off at 7 00 a. M. See most of us within the heavy snow bands. But come noon by the Roanoke Valley lynchburg Central Virginia south side start to see the transition from the snow to the sleet, the snow moves to the north. Sleet enters the highlands and greenbrier valley around three or 4 00 p. M. 5 00 this evening freezing rain, plain old rain in there, too. Surface temperatures in the up upper 20 but we rise above freezing right before midnight. That is when a lot of us see some steady rain fall and that will be the same case throughout the late evening on monday and even into tuesday. You see the period of heavy rain, leo. Yeah. Looks like it is going to be a wintry mix. You can see some of the yellow. Some of that rain could fall heavily at times for some. That is something we have to monitor. See the warm front to our west. That is lifting northeast over time. That will start to allow that warmer air to build in from the southwest. That is where we will start to see the transition. How much snow are we talking about . Again 4 to 8 along i81. Some is a little more. 610 in parts of the mountains and through the new river valley and parts of the new river valley. We should see glaze to a 10th of an inch of ice before it is done. Isolated spots more than that. Snow early afternoon mix you head towards tonight a wintry mix as temperatures are warming up then sunshine by later this week into the weekend. Temperatures approaching 60 degrees. The next chance of rain moving in late saturday into sunday. Also air travel quite a few canceled flights. Check in with your airline. They have got to drive to work we ask that you take it slow. If you are going to come out if you have to do it please take it slow and remember to go slow slow, look for traction and dont get overconfident while on the road especially if you have a vehicle. I did another measurement with my tape measurer to see how much snow we have in campbell im here along route 29 known as wards road. This is the main one heading towards lynchburg and danville and we have believe it or not even though this is a holiday it is president s day we have a lot of people traveling on this road which makes sense. This is the main road between lynchburg and danville. We dont have an interstate. Anybody needs to get between those two cities this is the road you use. The Virginia Department of transportation has been keeping you plowed. I have seen several come through this area. Even though they have been out scraping the roads you have white amount of snow and slush on the pavement right now. So keep this in mind if you have to head out this morning. There are a couple of accidents on interstate 81 in pulaski that are affecting traffic. Report just ahead on current time coming in at 6 14 as we head through the morning. Eastern tennessee right now through Far Southwest virginia snow falling heavily at times but you notice up towards the highlands, Pocahontas County snow. If you travel in and around the i 77, i81 interchange finding even a couple of breaks that might lighten up through roanoke and seeing a modern snow band through southern franklin and across floyd county seeing snowfall heavily at time. That is the trend. This is what is going on as you head through the morning. This is the computer model to our west. This is what is going to take place in the upper levels of the atmosphere. Surface temperature 21 degrees. Watch as you head towards 5000 feet. Temperatures start to warm and start to see the warmer air moving in and transition from snow to sleet. As you head through the afternoon 5000 feet up. Temperatures above freezing so we start to see more sleet taking place. Still below freezing at the surface. So the snowflake melts a little bit. So you get the sleet pellets. Head through the afternoon see temperatures warming up at the surface. Later tonight even the surface goes above freezing and we have plain old rain cross the region region. Forecast model goes from snow to sleet mix to some even freezing rain but before we transition to all rain. What can you expect as every clipper comes through tuesday night. See anywhere from 610 inches on average a little less on the i81 corridor. Highs today low to mid 30s and that takes place late. Overnight we see the temperatures warming up and your seven day planner finally after tuesday rain comes to an end. Start to see more sunshine and temperatures back up into the 50s near 60 by the weekend. Temperatures in the 30s. Exactly. Especially after this weekend. No kidding. Vdot crews have been out for hours getting ready for todays snowstorm but cold weather is making job tougher. Temperature in the low 20s and salt and street treatment doesnt work as affectively. Vdot had a small window on sunday to treat some of the interstates and major roads. Adding a solution with the salt so jump start the melting process. Either way they want people to stay home if they can. It could be later in the week before they can get around treating secondary roads. The roads are full of snow as we said stay home if you can. Beautiful snow coming down. We have about 5 inches of snow in my location in Campbell County im standing long wards road which is also known as route 29. As is the case in most snowstorms this road has been plowed. Usually one of the first ones to be plowed because it is the main road between lynchburg and danville and we have quite a bit of traffic even though it is a holiday. President s day. People still need to get from point a to. B. If youre going to do that in this part of the region route 29 is the road you would use. Now. They continue to plow this road but secondary roads are not as passible at this point. Some have been plowed. Including the road that i traveled on this morning. But most of your secondary roads are going to still have about i shouldnt try to measure with my hand but you see a little bit of snow on morning. Now, a lot of people get around by bus. The greater lynchburg transit they are in a modified schedule schedule. They are only running on plowed streets at this point. Check with glpc if you do need to take the bus to get where youre going this morning. They may not be traveling through your neighborhood as normal. Theyre on modified routes this morning. We have been telling you about the slick road conditions. When you go out always give yourself a little extra distance between you and the car ahead than normal because you have to slow down. You wantyou dont want to slide into the car ahead you. Slow down. Temperatures in the teens an 20 but you can see how the temperature kind of curve there there. That is that cool air wedge we continue to talk about where the cold air locked in at the surface. That is why we see the snowfall heavily at time. Elevations and start to transition to snow and sleet and over towards freezing rain. You can see we will see the coldest of the temperatures head back up the north and northeast and overall you can see as you head towards the high school i want to show you it is snow covered and we find slick conditions throughout the area as moisture continues to feed n mostly southwest virginia still finding snow but just around there starting to see that sleet mixing in and that will be kind of converging across our region. Were seeing pockets of heavyier snow south of roanoke and places like franklin county, henry, back into the mountain empire. Why the snow is falling now across the highlands and mainly across Far Southwest virginia and that is where that sleet is beginning to mix in across the area. Snowfall amounts that we have seen have been about 6 inches in roanoke. Now as we travel towards reporting about 5 inches of snow and a viewer just sent in 4 inches outside of their house house. Im standing right next to highway 460 business which plow plows have been going by me all morning. But the road is still not great great. And many nonmajor highways and roads arent even being plowed yet. So it could cause quite a problem for this mornings commute. State police had reported over a dozen crashes in a 14 county area including the new river valley. Vdot told us there have been several crashed or disabled cars along iian in month or Pulaski County alone. That is why theyre advising staying home and not getting on the road. Many more than that have driven by but at least 10 to 15 of them have had the plows down. Looking around the corner of the plows have been working here and i can see blacktop. Surprisingly a lot of traffic here on the road. Slow which is good news and leaving a lot of room for the plow crews to do their job as i work here you see the snow cleared up a little bit off the roads. Salt is doing its job and just because you see the blacktop doesnt mean you should get too confident in your driving. Take it slow. Especially on some of the side roles roads and places where youre turning off of orange avenue onto the road and you could find nurse some trouble quickly if you got a little too overconfident checked in with the airport and theyre reporting some canceled flights for arrivals annedidae departure if youre flying out of the airport head to their website to check on it. From top down view i checked on the faa on the map all airports i see green dots. That means arrival and departure in less than general terms less than 15 minutes. Good if youre traveling.
