Hi I'm Marina Duras you are listening to World Cafe over the last half century Jeff Lynn has left an indelible mark on popular music not only has he been the mastermind behind Electric Light Orchestra since the seventy's he was a member of classic rock supergroup the Traveling Wilburys and he's produced the Beatles Regina Spektor Tom Petty and more in recent years you may have heard of songs popping up in all sorts of soundtracks from Mr Blue Sky and Guardians of the galaxy Volume 2 to my personal favorite telephone line in the movie Billy Madison You'll hear what his favorite yellow soundtrack appearance is in our chat and you'll hear all about his new album from out of nowhere Jeff return to touring after his last album Alone in the universe for the 1st e.l.o. Tour since the eighty's partly inspired by a show he played in 2017 at Wembley Stadium that show is documented in this song on from out of nowhere you can even hear crowd sound from the concert Jeff Lynne joins me in a moment here's Jeff Lynne's yellow with time of our life. Week I. I. I. That was a time of our life you confided on from out of nowhere the new album from Jeff when Schiavo and Jeff Lynne joins me on World Cafe and you really can hear in the track how much fun you. Are having in that energy could you tell me about that night in 2017 at Wembley Stadium Yes I Can it was the most marvelous experience because Wembley was always a place that was like it's the top football ground in the country and everything and it's just as so many connections from throughout childhood and throughout grown up would. That play there was a real treat I mean we played there and it was 60000 people the most modest thing about it is watching the audience. That arriving so much fun and there were 3 generations there were youngsters you know middle aged and old people. Were old singing along looking as each other and giving each other a case name again and it was just a marvelous atmosphere it was fantastic you know after your last album Alone in the universe you went out on your 1st tour since the eighty's so what was it that made you ready to return to touring. That's a good point actually it's a stop and kind of accident only when when we played. A show for children in need you know the charity and asked us to do a show to close a show that I was doing at this theater. And it was such a marvelous band I love this band so much. We're all together with 13 piece which is perfect for my kind of music because in my kind of arrangements because you can cover every instrument you know we got enough people to play everything we got 6 back in vocalists if we need them because they all play instruments to 2 cellos a violin 3 keyboards piano. And. I sing lead and play lead guitar and on the album you do you play almost every note of every instrument except for some percussion correct mess up play every note of every instrument except for the shakers and the tambourine if you are this you are the person who's playing almost everything on this record how does it feel to surrender the Ravens so to speak to your band. In your life I love it because we have a musical director whose name is Mike Stevens and he shows them all all the new songs before I have to show them so I understand after the show Mike how it goes and he can hear it goes because he reads music and a lot stuff like that and he can play by ear as well and I can just play by ear which is perfectly all right it's not. It's not naughty or anything lots of people have the same. We're going to play another song from from out of nowhere this one's about getting back out on the road going on tour playing live can you tell me a bit about one more time you know one more time is it's kind of actually was written before the last 2 and I meant it to be for this particular time but I wrote it for the last state one more time so that last 2 was one more then but it will be one more time for the next one as well. Ok here is one more time Jeff Lindsay n roll cafe. Jeff Lynne on World Cafe. Talking about his new album from Jeff Lynne's you just heard one more time from the album from out of nowhere now on tour at your live shows you have been playing some Traveling Wilburys and when that happens there's footage old footage of the little breeze in the background and you're joined. At least at some of your shows by George Harrison's son Danny on stage what is that like revisiting that material with the son of your good friend and former band mate. Yeah absolutely fantastic because I've known Danny since he was about 5 when when I 1st went to produce George's album cloud 9 that's when we 1st met So met Don is the same John met George and so to have Donny come up and sing the song you know on stage with us is it's a real treat like it's a full circle it's just everything everything feels great about it and then he sings You can sing just like George if you want to he doesn't always do it but he can if he wants to. So do you sing that brilliantly now Traveling Wilburys with you George Harrison Roy Orbison Tom Petty Bob Dylan can you clear something up for me Jeff I have a question I've read the story in lots of different places have never been able to officially verify it it's that the Traveling Wilburys were founded well Bob Dylan was barbecuing for you guys that you're. Well almost really only most of what happened was that we all went over to Bob's to to. Practice this song that George got may have to finish it were to try and finish writing it so we actually recorded handle with care in Bob Dylan's carriage which is quite rare I think I don't think many people have done it yet what was it like in there just a garage it was great it was Gary's with a tape recorder and. Yeah there was no there was no sound proofing or anything like that it was just but we just did the 5 acoustic guitars in there and then we actually finished finished writing and then we did the words finished the words on the night while we're having dinner that Bob and Bobby cued for us we just sort of made up lines while we're having dinner after dinner we went and recorded all lines . Shows bits that we would sing. So I started up and really didn't want. To go up to see it was ground. 0. I'm speaking to Jefferson on World Cafe My name is a great interest I want to ask you about some other friends of yours and of George Harrison's you've produced for all of the Beatles separately you helped with free as a bird and 1005 is a song that used John Lennon's demos to create bass. Glee a new full Beatles song years after he passed away and this is so interesting to me what is it like resurrecting a band member in a way how do you protest something like that to make something the way you think they would want it to be. Well the thing is about that it was recorded like obviously a long time before we actually used in that song so. I don't know if he'd even if he would mind or not but we did a really good job of it you know we might a nice big backing track and I'm thinking wow I'm going to get this sonnet will voice because it's Blahnik assess with a piano in Monaco so you couldn't separate anything Sissy's voice in the piano on the piano I was a little bit louder than the voice so that was very difficult technically it was like how I was really scared it there one moment and then I was really chuffed the next moment. One thing that helped was pole goes to John's voice just underneath lightly singing the same words as John just underneath John Ok and that helped to bring the clarity of John's voice up a little bit. Because he couldn't sing too loud obviously otherwise it wouldn't he wouldn't ahead John. But he did a great job that sang exactly the same as John and it made it that much clearer that we knew it was going to work let's take a listen to a bit of freezing rain. That's the Beatles free as a bird a song devil and a help to make possible I am talking to Jeff when an old café My name is Raina Duras Speaking of birds the last song on your new album from out of nowhere is so lovely It's called Songbird. Thank you you've said before that writing the words for you is harder than writing music but it sounds like this one came a little bit easier to you Could you tell me where it came from yeah I can actually the reason. The song is an album is because just when I came off to there was 2 little families of. Song birds of doves you know mourning dove they just laid some eggs and then the eggs hatched and I was watching always from the kitchen window just just above the kitchen window and it was so. Entertaining they're just amazing and then watching them the babies jump on the mother to get the food out of the eat all the you know regurgitated stings but that wasn't the fun but the fun bit was that I got this idea for this song and about to write a happy blue song which was that sort of tried to so that. On Song my song good came home you know he said if one of my like it would have been years ago lots of other people would have song that right right instead of that like oh my baby left me thing yeah that's it yeah yeah I'm on my pitching come on. Ok got my duff must my dove came home let's hear it song bird. Come. On World Cafe You just heard Songbird from Jeff Lynne new album from out of nowhere I'm rain. Duras joined by Jeff Lynne Songbird is a gorgeous one from that new album not just in the writing but also in the production I want to talk with you about producing now you've produced for yourself so many other huge names Jeff Lynne is there anyone you wish you had had the chance to work with or you still want to have a chance to work with. Unfortunately I think I've all gone now but. You know obviously Elvis would have been a great one. But I don't suppose I would have ever got the chance to do that you know because what While this. I didn't want to give. Up this is a rogue f.a. I mean a Duras speaking to songwriter musician producer Jeff Lynne and you know I actually I was talking to my sister before this interview and she's a producer herself she's a big fan of your work as a producer she wanted me to ask you give any advice for young producers who are kind of starting out it's a loss. You re compresses on and I am ass and a nice little desk and that's all you need really. And probably so into tracks of pro-choice. And 80 channels of analog that's all I've got so. It's really odd to give advice because to do what you've got to do you need to work somewhere who's got all that stuff you know got all and all the good gear equipment is one of the most important things tell me a little bit about that 1st guitar you got because that was your sort of 1st piece of equipment it was the 2 pound one. Well I wonder I mean that came out this. Big old beat up brand Spanish guitar which had an action of a bat or probably half an inch the strings were about half an inch above the fret so it was so hard to play and you had to almost pressure your hands your fingers down with the other hand in it to to get it to stay down and I learned how to play on not so but it's did mean good stead for when I got a electric guitar with a really low action and that was like that was just so easy to apply after that brown one but thanks to me that I had a good. Thing I was 15 when I got it how long did you play it for. I've still got it now it's just one fret it's busted and. I'm just once every repaired are still using on records a lot of hard work from Donnie Farrington turned into a very pliable melodic guitar was own body very chuffed about that because that was you know a prized possession now you've been a both a producer and a writer with you know musicians like Tom Petty What is it like to write with someone as opposed to produce for them. Well it's actually lovely because. With a great bit just before you've come up with a good bit you know. So it's just more and more interest in that respect it might take a twist somewhere that you wouldn't have done had you just been writing itself give a favorite song that was a co-write Yeah I've a quite a few actually but. Might be. I won't back down with Tom or you've got it with Roy obese and Tom. You know. That. This is. Another place where you would hear your music soundtracks you've been making a lot of you know the new generation of fans of yours some of them probably come from hearing you in the movies your music has a tendency to pop up in some kind of unexpected places Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 2 The intro credits Billy Madison the Adam Sandler comedy had a telephone line Well Steve Buscemi is putting on lipstick I remember that very distinctly from when I was when I was younger. Do you have a favorite soundtrack appearance for your music. I think I do it's a very selfish reason. And it was a film about bowling you know 10 pin bowling. Kingpin and they played the whole entire show down for the full length of them match it was like I think it just played and played and played with no dialogue and no noise except maybe the pins going down but it was just a full song and I thought that was a great thing just leave the song alone and not and don't talk over it that is a rare it's a rare thing for a soundtrack to just let the whole thing go. And I was I was totally amazed by. Well maybe we can play a little bit of showdown right now. Feel . That was showdown Jeff Lynne with me on World Cafe My name is Jeff thank you so much for joining me that was so much fun. Thank you Jeff Lynne the new album from Jet Blue and yellow is called from out of nowhere. Be back with a cover of a song Jeff Lynne co-wrote and produced in just a moment on World Cafe. 25 years after it 1st aired friends is still hugely popular Netflix paid a $100000000.00 to stream the show it proves the value especially in an era where there's so much to choose from of just a known brand but has the sitcoms humor also stood the test of time I just find it dreadfully unfunny and mean spirited to look at stars oddly mean show tomorrow on Morning Edition from n.p.r.
