1971 - Five friends at San Rafael High School in California coined the term "4:20" as a euphemism for smoking pot. April 20 became a popular day to spark one up, as did 4:20 p.m. Note that the Boston song, "Smokin'," clocks in at 4 minutes, 20 seconds, and if you multiply the title numbers in Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women," No. 12 and No. 35, you get 420.
In perhaps the most fitting commemoration of the number 420, legendary stoners Snoop Dogg (whose "Up In Smoke Tour" ended on 4/20/2000) and Willie Nelson record the song "Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die" on 4/20/2009, in - where else? - Amsterdam.

Jonathan Taplin Tour-Managed Rock Royalty. Now He’s Telling His Stories
In a new memoir, Taplin recalls what it was like to watch Dylan go electric, George Harrison speed-drive, and Clapton and the Band wrestle with demons and drugs
By

Jonathan Taplin wasn’t present at the creation, but in rock & roll terms, he came close enough. He witnessed Bob Dylan going electric at the Newport Folk Festival, saw Jimi Hendrix and many others at Monterey Pop, flew into Woodstock while working for the Band, helped coordinate George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh, and was aboard the famous Festival Express, during which the Band, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and others rode a train around Canada, playing concerts along the way.

When I was a little girl the most popular doll to get for Christmas was a Shirley Temple doll. We had everything "Shirley Temple": dresses, paper dolls, books about Shirley with pictures of her bedroom and her dolls. When her movies were being shown every kid wanted to see them. Do you remember? If you were a child in the 1930s and 40s you remember.
If you remember cars that had to be cranked to start, you remember Henry Ford. My Uncle Tom broke his wrist cranking his old Ford. If you remember infantile paralysis, you remember the 40s.

Peter Frampton Covers George Harrison's 'Isn't It a Pity'

The track is the latest material released from
Frampton Forgets the Words, the iconic guitarist’s instrumental covers album due out April 23.
The accompanying video to “Isn’t it a Pity” begins with footage from Frampton’s farewell tour in 2019, before following the rocker home. From there, fans get a glimpse of what 2020 was like for Frampton; tour dates disappear, boredom settles in and the guitarist continually finds himself staring at the news.
“We have all been in the same boat for over a year now,” Frampton explained via press release. “Our video lets you into my world of lockdown and possibly yours too. I think we can all relate.”

The Summer of the Vaccine is coming. Are you ready, emotionally, for what will surely be a mix of anxiety and sunscreen and awkward social interactions and pure joy?
Probably not. After a year of constantly moving forward into the terrifying unknown, it’s hard to adjust to even a mild optimism.
Luckily, for all of us, music exists. Here are 12 songs to get you ready for what is hopefully coming.
“Here Comes the Sun,” The Beatles
Let’s ease into this. Let that tinkling guitar, the lovely work of George Harrison, warm you up. Do you feel that? It’s a smile, returning to your face.

1968 - George Harrison and John Lennon, fearing that their instructor, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, is a fraud and has been preying on women at his meditation camp in India, leave the retreat two weeks early and distance themselves from the Maharishi. Harrison though, remains dedicated to the concept of Transcendental Meditation.
Lennon got a couple of songs out of it. One was "Maharishi," but changed the title to "Sexy Sadie" to keep from getting sued. The opening lines make Lennon's sentiment perfectly clear:
"Sexy Sadie, what have you done
You made a fool of everyone"
Lennon dubbed the Maharishi "sexy" after hearing he hit on the actress Mia Farrow, who was also at the camp. Farrow's sister, Prudence, was there as well, and her experience led Lennon to write "Dear Prudence."

Gulf Today Report
Taylor Swift has broken a record long held by The Beatles for having three No 1 albums in the shortest amount of time, according to The Independent.
The singer-songwriter achieved three No 1 albums in just 259 days, thanks to her recent releases Folklore, Evermore, and her re-recorded version of her 2008 album, Fearless.
The previous record had been held by The Beatles, who topped the charts three times in 364 days with Help!, Rubber Soul, and Revolver.

No-Brainer Mods 2020

Three years ago
PG launched our “No-Brainer Mods" concept—an annual endeavor where we take a few of the most compelling affordable instruments on the market and see what we can do to make them competitive with much pricier guitars in terms of tone and performance. Our first outing refined four inexpensive versions of classic designs—a Jaguar, a Les Paul, a P bass, and a Gretsch Jet—and the second took a similar approach with semi-hollow, extended-scale, and shred-optimized 6-strings. This year, however, we thought it would be a trip to take advantage of all the well-built, low-cost guitars on the market and, instead of just making them a bit better via electronics and hardware upgrades, use them as low-risk springboards to something truly different.

Will Grammys leave the door open for Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak)? Supergroups have a strong track record
Jaime Rodriguez
Anderson Paak have joined forces to form a duo called
Silk Sonic. The single “Leave The Door Open,” off their album “An Evening with Silk Sonic,” has so far been tremendously popular, recently topping the Billboard Hot 100. But while their continued commercial success seems all but certain, one question does remain: what are their Grammy chances? Let’s look at some past supergroups to see how the recording academy has reacted to them and what that might mean for this new dynamic duo.

Toby Jugs: The four Beatles mugs that sold for £6,000

There are few things as quintessentially British as Toby Jugs. Since the 1700s, drinkers have collected them to celebrate the pleasure of sipping ales in pubs and homes across the country.
But now, thanks to their growing popularity among collectors here and abroad, the unusual pottery pieces are selling for record prices.
While most have only sentimental value to the owners, there are likely to be thousands gathering dust that are worth hundreds or thousands of pounds. Antiques experts believe their prices could continue to rise, making them a worthwhile investment for those who like them.
A rare set of character jugs depicting the Beatles, which includes this of John Lennon, sold for £6,050 earlier this year

BAZ BAMIGBOYE: The Queen's Gambit star Jacob Fortune-Lloyd will feature in new Beatles-themed biopic

Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, who captured Anya Taylor-Joy's attention on (and off) the chessboard in hit Netflix drama The Queen's Gambit, has played the best move of all by being picked to portray Brian Epstein, the Beatles' legendary manager, in a new film that will shoot later this year.
Epstein was dubbed 'the fifth Beatle' by Paul McCartney; and when John Lennon heard of his death, from an accidental overdose in 1967, he declared: 'He was one of us.'
The 33-year-old rising star was chosen for the part in Midas Man (An Unauthorised Autobiography of Brian Epstein) by director Jonas Akerlund.
A Grammy-award winning music video filmmaker, Akerlund is celebrated for his collaborations with Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Madonna; as well as two pictures: Polar, a highly visualised graphic novel adaptation starring Mads Mikkelsen; and Lords Of Chaos, about Norwegian underground satanic band Black Metal. 'His style always pushes the envelope,' Fortune-Lloyd said of the director's work.

Cheers for Pigafetta and Felice

Cheers for Pigafetta and Felice
Michael “Xiao” Chua
First of 2 parts
ON April 13, 2021, the eve of the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines (through the First Baptism in Cebu)*, we gathered in front of the monument to Antonio Pigafetta in Fort San Pedro, Cebu, sculpted by National Artist Abdulmari Imao. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines has installed a new historical marker in his honor. Why is this guy important?
We mention Pigafetta always in relation to the Magellan expedition. Pigafetta said this, Pigafetta wrote that. Yet, even as a teacher in history for many years, I never realized how important he was until I actually read Pigafetta himself, having only based my knowledge previously of the famous expedition from the history textbooks. Kygo, Gaspard Augé & More New Dance Tracks: First Spin

Kygo feat. James Gillespie, "Gone Are the Days"
Kygo isn't just dropping merch. He also came through with a new sunset pop jam with pulling vocals from James Gillespie. It's pure, classic Kygo with sweeping textures and emotional piano melodies that build slow and heavy over strings and a sometimes beat. Gillespie's lyrics tell a tragic tale of loss, something many can unfortunately relate to after the last year. A dramatic opening for the Norwegian superproducer, "Gone Are the Days" is his first official music release of 2021. Here's hoping we can all get close to our good friends one day soon. --

The Beatles' "When I'm Sixty-Four" is my fave song today

I was born on April 14, 1957, so the Beatles' "When I'm Sixty-Four" is my favourite song today.
Listening to that tune really takes me back...to a happier time?
Maybe so. Not that I'm doin' too bad right now, having just gotten my first Astra Zeneca jab a few days ago.
But when I was 10 years old, things were pretty sweet. That was the year I did really well at the Little Leo Punt Pass 'N Kick contest, well enough to get driven in from Chilliwack to compete for the top prize during half time at a B.C. Lions vs. Calgary Stampeders game at Empire Stadium.
