At all this week. Horace holmes . Its because of the grace period the schools gave has run out. You can see here at the mary center here in adelphi things have been busy all day long. Clinics all over the area, all over Prince Georges County are packed today. More than 400 students wont be allowed back in class when schools resume on wednesday. Kids have the next couple days off. Doctors say there are lots of reasons why so many havent gotten vaccinated yet. We get the typical ones where they missed vaccines before and classically there arent many vaccines between the age of 6 and 10, and then there is a big rush at 11. So, coming up tonight at 5 00 well hear from kids and parents who missed that deadline. It will be very interesting to hear what they had to say. Live in adelphi, horace holmes, abc 7 news. Thank you. Were just about 14 hours away from the opening of the polls in the area. The first polling places open up in virginia at 6 00 a. M. And then d. C. And maryland open the doors for voters at 7 00 a. M. There are plenty of important races for local voters to cast their ballots. In maryland youre picking a new governor. In the district its the mayors race. In virginia, a u. S. Senate seat and the tenth district congressional seat are all both up for grabs. Now, voters will also be casting ballots for a slew of issues and referendums. In Northern Virginia seven of those focus on transportation. We go live now to alexandria to take a closer look at that this evening. We have big votes tomorrow. Transportation tomorrow, the vote is not only affecting what happens on the roads but also the sidewalks. This is route 1 in the alexandria section of fairfax county. You see the sidewalk here actually comes to an end. This is the problem county Officials Say creates a dangerous situation. It will be on the ballot tomorrow. Fairfax county voters will be deciding on a 100 million bond for transportation projects. It is the first portion of a 1. 4 billion package to be implemented over six years and e plan calls for bike lane improvements, and also tens of millions of dollars for pedestrian improvements, roofed sidewalks like i was mentioning and also sidewalks with access to new metro stations. In arlington, meanwhile, the board member race is on the street car line along columbia ike. Its not the wisest use of our transit dollars. We can implement upgraded, modified bus Rapid Transit at a fraction of the cost. I think the street car is the right investment for our region. Its partnering with fairfax county, providing the next generation of light rail transit for our community. Candidates and election Officials Say tomorrow in virginia there will be a vote for the u. S. Senate seat and they hope that will increase turnout creating more interest for the other questions on the ballot. Again, the transportation questions are big for voters throughout Northern Virginia. At 5 00 well tell you more specific areas where this money could be spent if voters give the green light. Jeff goldberg, abc 7 news, live in alexandria. Thank you for that, jeff. Folks, we have everything you need to know about the candidates and the issues in virginia, maryland, and d. C. Go to wjla. Com and click on know your candidates. One thing that plays a big role in voter turnout as always, the weather. Absolutely. Well, chief meteorologist doug hill is in the Weather Center tracking the forecast. How is it looking for tomorrow . Its looking pretty good. For the washington metro area, maryland, virginia, the midatlantic through the carolinas good. There are parts of the country where showers may be an issue. Here, just a few clouds right now and some sunshine. Well look live at our camera in alexandria. Blue sky there. Sun sets in one hour and nine seconds. Yep. Thats the other part of daylight savings time. So in the morning it looks terrific. Partly cloudy skies. 7 00 a. M. Partly sunny. 42. 63 at midday. Close to 70 in the afternoon. A dry day. The same kind of pattern expected wednesday. 50s and 60s right now 65 the warm spot Reagan National airport. High pressure moving offshore is going to allow skies to remain partly cloudy tonight. Well cool down, 3845 by morning. Well look ahead to the rest of the week in just a few minutes. Okay. Well see you then. Thank you. All right. Well, a maryland woman won the wheelchair race at the new York City Marathon this year. Get this . Tatiana mcfadden also won the london, boston, and chicago marathons this year. Thats the grand slam, folks. If thats not impressive enough for you, the 25yearold hasnt lost a single marathon shes entered since 2012. This coming weekend, she will be in japan competing in yet another marathon there. She can honestly say i just flew back from a marathon and, boy, are my arms tired. Good for her. That is fantastic. Really. However, not quite so victorious this weekend. The washington redskins. Thats right. The team seems to always find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Jay gruden, the coach, spoke about the loss a bit ago. Our sports director is here to talk about that. What a mess. You said it correctly, too. They did leave a win in minnesota, no question about that. There are a lot of reasons for it. The defense was inconsistent, breakdowns, miscommunications, no pressure on teddy bridgewater. They lost containment. They didnt blitz him. You name it. For me, rg iii wasnt tough enough to win it. He was indecisive, took too long in the pocket, rolled in the pressure, and the pick, the interception before the half, was devastating. Instead of 100 and getting the secondhalf kickoff it was 107 with lost momentum. Where are the skins right now with the quarterback situation . Heres jay gruden this afternoon. A good look at kirk. We get a look at colt, and now back to robert. The jury is still out on that position. We feel good about roberts progress so far and we just have to continue to build and see how he does from week to week to week. Hopefully, we can see that here at the end of the season. Thats what we have to see and find out. Jury is still out at the quarterback spot. It was a terrible day for the redskins. Started with a bus crash on the way to the stadium which caused whip lash, bumps, bruises, shattered nerves. There was the antinickname protest which the players were certainly aware of. That took away some focus. Then the social media blew up about a split in the redskins locker room saying that some players were against rg iii. Folks, it was a mess. And it had to affect the focus of the players going into the game. Heres jay gruden this afternoon. We have some fragile egos here that, you know, guys are young guys trying their best and reading in the paper that nobody likes them. Theyre alienated and it just doesnt seem right. But as a football player, and as an nfl football player, playing here, you have to expect it. No question about it. You have to have thick skin. They are paid well to have that thick skin. The skins now have a bye week and jay gruden will find out a lot about this ball club over the last seven games. There were a lot of issues yesterday in minnesota and you said it so right. They left a win right there at the university of minnesota. Sure did. Well, lots of negative things to think about during this bye week. No question. Well talk about it more later in sports. See you then. Thank you. A woman with a 362 uber ride on halloween night had plenty of people. She used the car to go home from a party in baltimore but then turned to a website to try and get some complete strangers to step up, give her the money to help foot the bill. This afternoon uber issued a statement reading in part that, quote, dynamic pricing allows us to remain the reliable choice, even on the busiest nights of the year. Our inapp features ensure dynamic pricing is repeatedly communicated and approved before any trip is confirmed, end quote. The womans page asking for contributions has since been taken down. A preliminary report from the National Transportation safety board is revealing new details about last months deadly Helicopter Crash at frederick municipal airport. First, two women facing similar diagnoses make two different decisions on how to proceed. Different decisions on how to proceed. After filling out their hogan iquestionaire, aight. Hogan was awarded an a from the nra. But now he refuses to release his responses. The nra opposes comprehensive background checks. They want to weaken marylands gun safety laws. Even support letting suspects on the fbi terror watch list buy guns. On gun safety and terror, the nra is wrong. Hogan gets an a from the nra. On protecting maryland, we just cant trust him. The screen comes. The ball goes down to lauren hill. The layup is good that is no ordinary layup for lauren hill. It was the first basket in the first game of what the freshman says she hopes is a long college career. The reality is lauren was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor earlier this year, and doctors say she probably wont live to see 2015. Being able to play in her first game at mount st. Joseph University Near cincinnati was one of her dreams. I cant pick the great moments. I made my first shot. That was awesome. Lauren says she made her second shot with her right hand, which has been giving her trouble since her diagnosis. Her team won, 6665, and at halftime lauren was honored by legendary coach pat summit. She says she hopes there is a lauren hill game every year at that university as long as it benefits cancer research. Now, hill says she is not fighting for herself. She is fighting for the future. Shes pushing for a cancer cure. At the same time barim Brittany Maynard made a different decision. The rightto life advocate took her own life this weekend. The decision came this weekend and she planned it all along. She had just 29 years on earth, but Brittany Maynard packed it with memorable experiences, teaching in a nepal orphanage, traveling the world. It is the young womans death thats creating discussion. My goal, of course, is to influence this policy for positive change and i would like to see all americans have access to the same health care rights. Maynard was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor january 1, soon discovering she only had six months to live. In that time she moved with her husband to oregon, one of only five states with an assisted suicide law. On saturday, maynard ended her life, giving herself medication, dying with dignity under that states law. Her choice, shining a light on the endoflife issues which Consumer Reports recently found the Health Care System is poorly designed to deal with. Brittany maynards story is unique to her but also a reminder that we will all face the end of our lives some day. Perhaps not so tragically young, but some day. And that we may need to think as she did. It was a decision maynard struggled with. She seemed for a moment to be changing plans. But ultimately, she died the way she planned to. If november 2 comes along and ive passed, i hope my family is still proud of me and the choices i made. Abc 7 news. So the ways that Brittany Maynard and lauren hill responded to their diagnoses inspired our question of the day for you today. What would you do if faced with your own mortality . Go to the wjla Facebook Page and share your thoughts there. Well share some of your answers a little bit later in our broadcast. Thanks, alison. Time for a check of the traffic situation on this monday evening in the wtop Traffic Center. Bob, how does it look . Some typical monday afternoon delays on the inner loop of the beltway out of tysons to connecticut avenue, a crash on the inner loop near connecticut avenue is on the left shoulder, but out of the roadway. The outer loop briefly slowed there as well. 66 headed westbound from the beltway just volume delays moving out toward centreville and on the outer loop a brief slowdown at the wilson bridge. Had a crash on the eastbound southwestsoutheast freeway. Thats gone. The loop heaviest out of tysons but all lanes are open there and traffic on i95 southbound at dale boulevard slow headed past dumfries and the express lane merge. No incidents along the way. All right. Thank you, sir. Talk to you tomorrow. All right. Weatherwise weve got election day tomorrow. Will people be able to blame the weather for not voting . No. I mean, the weather will be beautiful. I think florida is going to be nice all the way up the east coast. You get to northern maine, thats an issue, but theyre used to that. I was going to say. Lets get started here. Were in fine shape at the moment with areas of sunshine and clouds throughout the area right now. This is a live look at the naval academy, a dock there, one of our Weather Bug Network hd cameras. Clouds, blue sky left. It is the time of year where now at 4 00, probably the only live cameras we have to see, because it is going to get dark earlier like 5 05 tonight. Through the evening partly cloudy and cool. Temperatures settling near 50 degrees later this evening and a bit cooler overnight. Temperaturewise comfortable. 65 Reagan National. 59 in new york. 35 at caribou, maine with plenty of snow. Cold air across the upper midwest and the northern Mississippi River valley. Temperatures fairly comfortable elsewhere. This is pushing winds out of the southwest for the next couple days that will make us very comfortable and keep us dry tomorrow and wednesday with partly cloudy skies and temperatures approaching 70 degrees on both afternoons. So well be really in fine shape here. Now, satellite and radar shows cloudiness back on the western side of a big area of High Pressure centered right over the carolinas as it moves out tonight and the winds will become more consolidated out of the southwest. That will bring in warmer temperatures. A few clouds. Nice weather. But by wednesday night and thursday, this is when well start to see the heavier cloudiness and rain. This cold front gets just a bit closer to the area. In fact, our future cast shows the high through the day tomorrow but a very nice day. Same story into wednesday. Then wednesday night, this model kind of rushes some of the showers into the mountains. I think itll hold off a little more until the day thursday. Depending what time of day it comes through, there could be an isolated thunderstorm to go along with the showers as well. Mostly cloudy to mostly clear or mostly cloudy skies i think well see for the short term this evening. Then well clear out overnight. 51 degrees later tonight. 42 in the morning. A few clouds. 63 degrees at midday tomorrow. I think well be in fine shape through the day tomorrow. Locally, if you want to get out and vote, its going to be no weather excuse. Temperatures will steadily climb from the lower 40s to close to 70 by mid afternoon. We are going to be in fine shape. Then for wednesday, the same weather story. Thursday, showers with the cold front still in the 60s. Breezy, cool. Mid 50s for friday. Hey, check out this first weekend in november. It looks sweet. Looks like well have partly cloudy skies, highs in the middle 50s, and lower 50s with more sunshine in the forecast for monday. Pretty good. Not bad at all. Okay. Thank you so much. Well, still to come here on abc 7 news at 4 00, get out the vote actually takes on a new meaning as voter apathy hits right in time for the midterm elections. First, flames light up the Early Morning sky. Well have the latest on the Frederick County firefighters are investigating what sparked a massive fire that happened this morning on Market Street in frederick. It shut down the street for several hours and damaged ten homes. Abc 7 cameras were there as fire and smoke whipped through nearly a dozen downtown Frederick Town homes early this morning. Flames coming out of the house. Orking residents residents were sent out into he cold. Frederick fire officials tell abc 7 the fire started at this white home along south Market Street just before 1 00 a. M. Then quickly spread to the adjoining buildings. As you can see from news chopper 7, crews worked for hours battling the blaze. James van fleet owns one of the homes a few doors down and says he just renovated the lower level unit in the house a few weeks ago. Now he may have to do it again after smoke filled the rooms early this morning. I was upset last night, you know, they called me. Fire officials tell abc 7 news the good news is some of these town homes were vacant or for sale, and so not every one of them was occupied when the fire started. One firefighter suffered minor injuries. None of the residents were injured. For residents, though, like greg howser, right now its just about picking up the pieces and finding a temporary place to call home. I love the house. You know, insurance will help out to rebuild it. In frederick, abc 7 news. An Early Morning call also brought firefighters to a group home in Silver Spring. The Maryland Group home is gutted, pretty much destroyed, but two care givers who live and work here who rescued three disabled people, are being called heroes tonight. Ill tell you their story, coming up. All right, rich. Thank you. When you think of Postal Service you probably dont think email. Usually the opposite. Find out email claiming to be from the snail mail agency is leading to a consumer alert. A little later, ever get a box of woo in the mail . Why you might want to. Im live in baltimore where a large crowd is awaiting first Lady Michelle obama. She is going to be speaking on behalf of Lieutenant Governor anthony brown. When we come back, well check in with his campaign and that of republican larry hogan as they wrap up the well, candidates are pulling out all the stops in the homestretch to election day. Thats right. Right now the first lady is in baltimore, showing her support in the maryland governors race. Maryland bureau chief brad bell is there, too, joining us live with the latest on that race. Hi, brad. Hey, yeah. Were here in this big room in downtown baltimore, waiting for the first lady to appear. Right now Howard County executive the democratic candidate for leon panetta governor ken ulman is speaking trying to get the crowd fired up. The whole point of this event is to get democrats fired up and out to the polls. We can tell you what the Lieutenant Governor was up to today, very busy campaigning across the state. This race is considered basically a tossup at this point. So voter turnout, getting those who were your supporters out is really the key for each candidate. This is what brown has to say today. Voters are focusing on the fact that tomorrow is an election, clear choice in this election, fighting for working families, middle class values. Very familiar words from anthony brown. He does not stray from his stump speech very often. Larry hogan, the republican, also out in baltimore today and in Prince Georges County. He is doing some Old Fashioned campaigning, going to a diner, making himself available so that he, too, can spread his message and get his voters to the polls tomorrow. Well, were really excited because we feel as if the energy is out there, the momentum is with us, and that a majority of marylanders, regardless of their party affiliation, are really going to vote to bring about a change of direction in our state. Well, again, all of the polls are saying that this race essentially now is too close to call. So the key for each of these candidates in an Election Year when there is really not that much excitement and turnout generally is expected to be low tomorrow while getting the faithful out to the polls is really the key. Thats what this push is about here and thats what hogan is about. Now, well have much more on this coming up at 6 00. As these candidates close out the election. Leon, back to you. Thanks, brad. Voters had an opportunity to vote early in maryland and in the district. But if you didnt take advantage of that, the polls are open in both areas at 7 00 a. M. And theyll be open until 8 00 p. M. In virginia the polls will be opening up at 6 00 a. M. Until 7 00 p. M. Tomorrow night. You can learn more about all the candidates and the ballot questions before you at wjla. Com. Now, the weather could make or break an election as weve seen happen in years past. Absolutely. Lets check in with doug now to see how its looking. Sounds like that wont happen tomorrow, doug. I dont think weather will be an issue at all up and down the entire east coast. Areas through arkansas and northwestern arkansas and northeast texas, southern oklahoma, eastern oklahoma, a fair amount of rain tomorrow, but most of the country i think will be in fine shape. Take a look at our live hd weather camera on 3rd street and the boardwalk in ocean city, maryland. They still have sunshine there. Weve got more clouds coming in mixing with late day sunshine across most of the metro area. As we get to the next couple days i think youll enjoy the weather pattern. 65 degrees Reagan National. 61 winchester. 64 fredericksburg right now. 58 degrees in ocean city. As we look around the area well look for a very quiet evening here. Partly cloudy skies, well drop to near 50 later tonight, and as we head through the election day tomorrow, lots of sunshine, a few fair weather clouds, a nice southwesterly breeze, and mid afternoon temperatures close to 70 degrees. Pretty sweet, ill say. Well have more in a few minutes. Alison . Sounds lovely, doug. Thank you very much. No National Races this election cycle, but plenty of races with national implications. Kai jackson at the live desk now with a look at some of these key races. Hi, alison. There are a number of races politicians and observers will be watching very closely tomorrow. All 435 states are up for election in the house. In 33 of the 100 senate seats are up for election. Seats may be up for election but in many cases their representatives are senators from certain states expected to get back into office or win outright. The wild cards are the seats up for grabs. By most predictions, the house has 20 seats that could go either way and roughly 10 senate seats have an uncertain outcome at this point. In the senate, georgia, iowa, louisiana, and New Hampshire have races with decisions that could change the majority. Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton has even campaigned for the democrats running, a sign some are on the ropes. In the house, arizona, california, and illinois, each had three seats up for grabs. There are big implications here. Now, in virginias senate race polls suggest and political experts have predicted democratic incumbent mark warner will likely beat the republican challenger ed gillespie. Right now democrats control the senate over republicans, 5345. There is a great expectation that by the end of tomorrow that could change. Back to you, alison. Thank you, kai. Midterm elections arent known for big voter turnout. This year could be the worst in years. According to gallup, about onethird of the people asked say theyve given a lot or at least some thought to tomorrows election. Just 32 say they are extremely motivated to vote. 37 say they are more enthusiastic about voting than usual. For comparison, voter turnout was about 41 in the 2010 mid terms. On the wjla Facebook Page, weve been asking if you plan to vote tomorrow, russell writes if you dont vote you should just deport yourself. David writes, yes, i plan to vote for question mark. For you to decide. Hope he makes up his mind by tomorrow. A consumer alert this afternoon as we head into the height of the Holiday Shopping season. Do not open any email claiming to be coming to you from the u. S. Postal service. A simple note about a package could really be a dangerous computer virus. At first glance, it seems like a failed attempt at a surprise delivery. Postal customers were receiving emails that basically said they had a package ready for pickup at the post office. The email looks official with the United States Postal Service logo and a note saying a courier couldnt make the delivery of parcel today. It asks customers to click on the link below, but if you click malware could be installed on your computer. They could see all personal information on your computer and gain access to anything that you had on your computer. These bogus emails usually have a sense of urgency and claim that if the package isnt picked up within 30 days it will be returned to sender. Postal inspectors say the biggest red flag is they dont use email to contact customers about a package delivery. The customer would receive notification in their mail box, a postcard stating they had a package that needed to be picked up, or they would find something on their door. Postal inspectors say always be wary of any email claiming to come from the Postal Service. Sears and kmart will be opening up on thanksgiving this year. Sears plans to welcome shoppers at 6 00 p. M. , two hours earlier than they did last year. Kmart will be opening up all day starting at 6 00 a. M. Theyll stay open for 42 hours straight.
