A major winter storm is bearing down on the Delaware Valley and now crews are working hard to get ready. Blizzard and winter storm warnings go into effect in about three hours from now. A potentially dangerous march noreaster wont be too far behind. It is monday night and the big story on action news is the snowstorm looming off to our west. The city of philadelphia could see a foot of snow and that is prompting the City School District to close all Public Schools tomorrow. The same goes for archdiocesan and parochial schools in the city of philadelphia. Of course we have School Closures for you running at the bottom of your screen continuously. Were streaming this for you on our web site 6abc. Com as soon as it gets under way. In the meantime we have Live Team Coverage tonight from the suburbs to the shore and the impact this noreaster will have on our region but first lets get the latest from accuweather. Meteorologist cecily tynan at the big board tonight. Cecily. Hi, rick and double scan live showing a major snowstorm that is beginning to gel, to come together. Weve got a few pieces that will Work Together to create this storm. Weve got low pressure surface low over the gulf of mexico. What in will do is head over to the carolinas. At the same time this piece of energy from the Northern Branch of the jet stream will dive down, they come together, they fade, they bomb out intensify and then that storm system will hug the east coast as it moves up to the north and that will pull in a lot of moisture and some cold air. Now, the a blizzard warning has been posted to are areas north and west of philadelphia. All the counties in orange. These areas can expect 35 miles an hour winds reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile for three consecutive hours so its not just the snow piling up, its the snow blowing down creating near whiteout conditions. Most of our viewing area in the pink under the winter storm warnings. Those go in effect 8 oclock until 6 oclock tuesday but really the snow should be holding back until about 10 oclock and 1 oclock moving in from the southwest to the northeast. It will start light but its in the middle of the night its cold out there, it will be sticking on untreated roads immediately. The height of the storm between 3 oclock in the morning and noon. This is when were looking at the heaviest precipitation, the strongest wind. When that storm system is really intensifying and closest to us. By mid to Late Afternoon it will be ending as light snow, winding down and what you get is all based on your location. North and west of philadelphia, this is going to be a snow event. Near philadelphia and areas to the south and east, snow changing over to a bit of mix ending as snow and southern delaware extreme southern new jersey this is just mainly rain but the precipitation isnt the only concern. For more details on that lets head over to adam joseph. Adam. Exactly cecily. A lot of snow to the north and west and a lot of rain along the shore and in addition to that coastal flood warnings going into effect mainly for high tide tomorrow morning between 9 00 and 10 oclock in the morning on average for moderate coastal flooding, breakers of six to 9 feet along the coastline. This also goes into the delaware bay and major erosion is also expected. Winds, thats another powerful part of a noreaster. Right along the shore 50 to 60 miles an hour. You have no friction meaning that wind comes directly off of the water, has nothing to stop it but once it hits land it hits that friction and it slows down so 45 to 50 miles an hour from philadelphia through trenton and dover and then 40 to 45 miles an hour to the north and west where that that wind will combine with the snow creating blizzard conditions. The biggest concerns with this particular storm will be that heavy wet snow, the consistency of it weighing down on everything. Well see rates of one to 3 inches per hour especially philadelphia to the north and west creating low visibility, snow packed roads. You do not want to venture out in the height of the storm tomorrow morning. Also with the weight of that snow, do prepare for possible Power Outages first thing tomorrow morning throughout the afternoon. Also when you take a look at our latest snowfall map theres going to be a sharp cutoff where theres snow versus no snow for between roxborough and millville, this is an example, theres going to be a 12inch difference over just 45 miles. Its all about location and where this is exactly going to set up. Well throw numbers on this for you in that full accuweather forecast coming up in just a little bit, guys. Thank you so much adam. We just have some high thin clouds out there. Actually some people tweeting me saying no way were getting a snowstorm its beautiful out there. The storm is still down to the south. Right now, though, temperatures are pretty cold. 42 degrees in philadelphia. The normal high for this time of the year is 52. Allentown its 35. Wilmington 37. Cape may 33. And trenton currently 36. Satellite6 action radar showing some high thin clouds beginning to stream up from the south. Weve got some sprinkles moving across parts of virginia. A lot of that is verga not reaching the ground but this is where the storm system is right now. Actually you can see this convergence right over the gulf coast. This moves off the carolina coast. If you look you can see that snow across the ohio valley. Thats a piece of energy that moves in really intensifies the storms helps pull some colder air and that storm system will really be hugging the east coast. Actually the latest computer models tracking that a little bit farther to the west so that means it will pull in some of the warmer air from the atlantic areas east of philadelphia. So, future tracker showing by 11 oclock, this is when we begin to see the first flakes sneaking up from the southwest. Really intensifying by 3 oclock and notice you can see that rainsnow line across south jersey and delaware. That is really going to be limiting the snowfall totals there but areas north and west of philadelphia, it is going to be snow. 7 oclock in the morning bands of heavy snow across the Lehigh Valley, berks county. Weve got some sleet moving into philadelphia but then as that storm system moves closer to new england it will actually pull in some colder air so well get that changeover back to snow around philadelphia, south jersey by 4 oclock weve got some lingering snow showers and the storm system is basically over. So, expected snowfall amounts. Weve got a lot of lines here. It really depends on where you are. Berks county, Lehigh Valley to the poconos this is what i call the jackpot zone. 16 to 24inches of snow. You get across the northwest suburbs of philadelphia, 12 to 16. Philadelphia right around the foot line. It really depends on how much sleet we get in here and then across south jersey, a very tight gradient. Weve got six to 12 counties closer to philadelphia. Then it drops off dramatically. This line here from millville to dover, two to 4 inches. That likely will be washed away by rain. I know its a lot to digest. I do have a closerup map on my Facebook Page that you can look at. Winds also a major factor. Future tracker showing 10 oclock in the morning wind gusts 65 miles along the shore and even some gusty winds by 5 oclock as that storm system pulls out. Action news continues with meteorologist adam joseph, jaime apody, Rick Williams and monica malpass. Hello again. Heres whats happening on action news tonight. The most powerful snowstorm of the season is knocking on our doorstep. And its prompting communities to issue warnings to folks to prepare now. We have Live Team Coverage. Those trying to beat the storm by getting out of town are running out of time. Airlines are already making changes ahead of the approaching storm. How its impacting travelers. And villanova is not letting the big snowstorm keep them from their quest to defend their ncaa championship title. Were with the wildcats as they take off for the tournament. Now back to our top story tonight. We are continuing to track a very powerful winter storm thats now triggered blizzard warnings in parts of our region. Other areas are under a winter storm warning because of the snow, sleet and powerful winds that are expected. Because of that schools in our area are already making preparations. All philadelphia public and archdiocesan schools will be closed tomorrow. So snow emergencies for many communities will also go into that effect. We have Live Team Coverage. Bob brooks has preparations in communities under that blizzard warning. Sara bloomquist has more on what airlines are doing ahead of the storm. But first lets get the latest on the track of the storm from meteorologist adam joseph live at the action news big board. Hi, adam. That track is key. Because its going to stay just off of our coastline and thats going to create a big difference from south to north with a lot of rain to a lot of snow and the blizzard warnings are up for the northwestern suburbs of philadelphia and they also extend to new york city hartford boston up to portland so many areas, major cities in the northeast under blizzard warnings starting at 8 00 p. M. Tonight and then lasting through the day on tuesday. The low itself is still in the gulf of mexico and you can see it firing up with all the lightning strikes to the south of that low. This will be working off to the carolinas. At the same time energy will be injected in from the ohio and Tennessee Valley and thats going to create that power house of a storm fast enough that we take advantage of it with all that moisture working up the eastern seaboard. So, really the key time frame that you want to stay off the roads where youre going to see the sleet and where youre going to see the snow tomorrow especially is between 4 00 a. M. And 10 oclock in the morning. Thats the height of the storm. The strongest winds. The heaviest precipitation. Even the chance of thundersnow north and west and then it starts to trail off as you go deeper into the afternoon. Improving conditions from the sky at 4 oclock but if youve seen the snow its going to take some time to get it off the roads. In fact region by region, big variation from north to south. Lehigh valley, 16 to 24inches. In and around pottstown, if youre near there, 12 to 16inches. In philadelphia, for center city were going right around a foot with some sleet mixing in the morning and in fact 24 years ago on this date was the blizzard of 93 when we saw a foot of snow. Millville two to four. That washes away to rain so you wont see anything on the ground when you wake up tomorrow morning and just a coating with about 2inches of rain in cape may. So, youre going from 2inches to rain to 2 feet of snow in our viewing area. Well break down the map for you coming up in that seven day and forecast and let you know about the bitter cold that follows in just a little bit. Monica. Thank you adam. Of course 6abc. Lets find out who is going to get the most. Yeah, well see anywhere from 2inches of rain in parts of our area to 2 feet of snow in another part of our area. It really is about location with this. As we take a look at storm tracker6 live double scan were starting to see a little bit of white showing up between wilmington and dover but dont worry its no the starting early. This is way up in the clouds verga. It evaporates because the atmosphere is very dry so its going to take quite a few hours for the atmosphere to ripen up so to speak for this precipitation to eventually make it to where we live. As we take a look at the temperatures, everyone pretty much in the 30s except philadelphia kind of sticking out like a sore thumb way above everybody else at this point so these temperatures cold enough at the onset that most of us will start as snow and then we have those mixing issues south of the city. Satellite and radar, this is the very leading edge of the precipitation working up the eastern seaboard. Few things going on. The energy to the west near cincinnati, that pulls itself into a low developing off the carolinas. Primary low right now in the gulf of mexico that heads over Jacksonville Florida to the coast, develops into that noreaster, that powerful storm as it pulls up the eastern seaboard and tapping into gulf moisture and also the atlantic. So at 10 oclock tonight, again, you are going to see a little bit of snow trying to develop to the south and west. So many hours from now, a good still four hours before some of us even see the first flakes. By 2 30 in the morning, the storm is really starting to crank up. Philadelphia to the north with heavy snow. There you see the rain to the south and where you see this blue line that is sleet mixing in. That sleet line will flirt with the city of wilmington, philadelphia, maybe as far north as trenton for a brief time here 7 oclock tomorrow morning and the question is how long does it mix with sleet. If it mixes for awhile, were on the lower end of our numbers. If it doesnt for awhile were on the higher end for our numbers along i95 but its heavy rain southern new jersey and delaware and then at 10 oclock colder air collapses in as the storm deepens so it flips back to snow where it briefly changes with sleet and then by 4 oclock in the afternoon the heaviest is gone and we just have some lingering light snow showers. So, you see a lot of numbers. A lot of colors on this map and that is because theres going to be a sharp cutoff with this storm as to where you see snow, where you see rain. North and west 16 to 24inches, Lehigh Valley poconos, thats the jackpot area. Most of southeastern pennsylvania between 12 and 16inches. Then as you sink to the south any of this two to four, coating to 2inches far Southern Area that is going to wash away first thing not morning so youll never actually see this on the ground if youre not up before seven clock in the morning. But Bridgeton Hammonton four to 8inches before the rain. It eight to 12 wilmington to glassboro cherry hill before it switches to sleet and maybe a little rain. Philadelphia to the north and west 12 to 16. This line right here is your 12inch line. This right here is your 8inch line so the city were looking at right around a foot. So the heaviest snow again is north and west of i95, even thundersnow tomorrow morning at the height, one to 3 inches of snow per hour creating blizzard conditions. Avoid any travel and again Power Outages because of the heavy wet snow kind of weighing on our trees and the limbs. The exclusive accuweather 7day forecast, that powerful noreaster tomorrow depending on location, a lot of rain or a lot of snow at 34. Windy cold leftover snow showers wednesday, a high of just 29. 36 thursday, a lot of sun.
