I kept asking him and he said he would tell me if i agreed to let him stay with me. I finally got him to tell me and he said that he shot and killed two iranian people. Bushs issues have been dedicated to veterans after returning home with a growing number of them suffering injuries and stress, president bush has worked to support programs that ease the transition to civilian life. In his new book he uses his love sacrifice and courage of americas military veterans. Well talk to some of them in a moment, but first president bush, its great to have you here with us. Its been a while. Let me get caught up on some things. You took office in 2001 after an extremely contentious election and the Supreme Court decided if the nation was incredibly divided. How would you compare the divisions we faced then to now . Its hard to compare times. One thing for certain is the job is a tough job. Everybody looks at the presidency when they campaign one way and then they get in office and find out theres a reality to the job. Theres been times where weve been divided. I remember growing up as a kid when i got out of college we were really divide and its it requires a lot of people coming together to try to make us united. Right now. Have you heard President Trump do or say anything to attempt to heal the wounds of the election. Theres only been one month in office. You have to take the man for his word that he wants to unify the country. Its hard to unify the country with the news media being so split up. When i was president , you mattered a lot more because there was three of you and now theres all kinds of information being bombarded out and people can say things anonymously. Its a different world. You bring me to an interesting point because you were a guy who faced praise and criticism from the media during your time in office. Even at the times where you were dealing with the worst criticism where it must have been very difficult to hear and read some of the things that were being said by the press in this country, did you ever consider the media to be the American People . I consider the media to be indispensable to democracy. We need the media to hold people like me to account. Power can be addictive and its important to call into account people who abuse their power whether it be here or elsewhere. One of the things i spent a lot time doing is trying to convince Vladimir Putin to accept the notion of an independent press. Its kind of hard to tell others to have an independent free press when were not willing to have one ourselves. You mention in the Vladimir Putin. So many contacts between the Trump Campaign and the russian government. Would you like to see a special prosecutor appointed to look into this and give the American People answers . I think we need answers. Whether or note or not, youre talking to the wrong guy. I have great faith in the head of the Senate Intelligence committee. Hes an independent thinker. If he were to recommend a special prosecutor, it would have a lot more credibility with me. Ive never been a lawyer. Im not sure the right avenue to take. I am sure, though, that that question needs to be answered. It was only eight or nine months after you took office that the attacks of 9 11 occurred and after those attacks you gave a speech and said, i also want to speak tonight directly to muslims throughout the world. We respect your faith. Its practiced freely by millions of americans and millions more in countries that america counts as friends. Its teachings are good and peaceful. Thats very different talk than what were hearing today about a muslim ban. Do you think the president s position on this has been well for all of us to recognize one of our great strengths is for people to be able to worship the way they want to or not worship at all. The bed rrock of our freedom is the right to worship freely. I understood this was an ideological conflict and people who murder the innocent are not religious people. They want to advance an ideology and we have faced that in the path. But by banning people from seven predominantly muslim countries from entering this country, do we make it easier or harder to fight the war on terrorism . I think its very hard to fight the war on terrorism if were in retreat and i think we learned that lesson that if the United States decides to pull out before a free society emerges, its going to be hard to defeat them. The enemy exploiting weakness. Its going to be very importaimportant, if thats the goal to defeat isis, which i believe it should be, that we project strength. Now whether or not the domestic politics helps them or not i want to make sure. Are you for or against the ban . I am for an immigration policy thats welcoming and upholds the law. On a more general note you sat the inauguration and you listened to the inaugural address and he talked about american carnage and the fact that so much has gone wrong in this country and so much is wrong. Is that the america you so he when you travel around this country . The america i see often is the america that these vets represent, people willing to sacrifice for the greater good to put their lives on the linened a thline and then come back and make america a wonderful place to live. Thats why im here and selling this book because i want america to realize how fortunate we are to have le we have to help them transition from a vet to civilian. Let me tell people we want to talk more about your book and meet am so of the military veterans that the president is honoring. A few of the stories behind the paintings youll see. My name is alexander. Im Sergeant Josh hanson. I was a Staff Sergeant in the United States infan tree. I was a medic in the army. It was the best decision i ever made and i would do it again in a heart beat if i was given the opportunity to. Many of these vets not only have physical injuries, injuries that are easy to see, but theyre dealing with pts. Lots of times we do such a good job of hiding it that we dont get the help we need. I found i was in my room lot of times playing things out in my head. I knew i had to change something about my life. I was actually dying. I wanted to draw attention not only to their courage, but to the fact that theyve contributed once and they need to know they can contribute again. Ive been more in my life than i would have done. I feel very lucky and fortunate. Theres a lot of veterans that die by suicide. Get them out of the house and doing things and back together with other veterans has been huge. Blacksmithing is my form of expression and its become my therapy. Its become what i do. Its my healing. Wow. Look there. Thats me. Thats amazing. I guess it does kind of resemble brad pitt. Thats pretty cool. I love that hat. Thats really cool that president actually thought of painting me. Each one of these paintings was painted with a lot of respect and affection. I know each person i painted. I was thinking about their background, their service, injuries and recovery. Theres a lot of compassion and energy in each one of these paintings. Were happy to have savannah joining us along with some of the veterans featured. Good morning to all of you. Great to have you hear. I wish everybody could see how you interact when the cameras arent on because these are true friendships among all of you, which made your job i would think all the harder. Here you are. You have to capture the essence of them. What was going through your mind . How did you feel . First, i want to sell a helping our vets, which is where the proceeds of the book go. Secondedly i got to know all four of them pretty well and i felt great pride. People ask me do you miss being president. The answer is not really, but i miss saluting who volunteer to wear the uniform and all four did. You have said to people over the years that the responsibility of a commander in chief is making a decision to put americans into harms way. Getting to know these people and especially in your post president ial years, do you have a new view of that . No, its still hard. It was a hard decision to make. My view was this, how can we help these great americans transition from the military to civilian life . Theyve got visible wounds. Theyve got invisible wounds, but all four of these vets are willing to stand up and say i had an issue and i want to help somebody else. So weve done a lot of work on this issue and its counseling helps a lot and a lot of groups around the country that are able to help vets, but it starts with this is why these vets are very important vets saying ive got a problem. Theres a lot of denial because theres a stigma. Our message is its courageous to talk about it and seek help. First i have to say, did he get the pore traits right . Yes. Youre someone thats talked about the invisible injury. What do you want people to understand about this transition to civilian life . I think the message is that first dont keep it to yourself because like the president said the peer to peer counseling, mentorship through those hard times, are the best way to come out of it. Find somebody you can trust. You can talk to and make sure youre discussing those cant see. This guy was in combat twice on one leg. The stories of actual per serverance are unable. Melissa you lost a leg when your convoy hit an ied in iraq. What has that transition been like for you . Im fortunate to have the mentorship of the military and i cant tell you enough about going to the president ial ranch and riding a Mountain Bike with other fellow Wounded Soldiers and showing there is life after disability. Ive done in my life with one leg than i ever would have done with two so i feel like a lucky girl. Ron, you were memorable to the president because he said the only one that was wearing sunglasses when you first met. Can you talk about why . The traumatic brain injury i had, i was sensitive to light vision and i was always winking so i could see one thing. After a visit to the ranch, i saw the connection he had with us and when you have sunglasses on you lose that connection with someone and i used to use it to hide behind, but when i saw that he reached out and opened his heart and home to us in the caring way that president bush does, it inspired me to try to connect with people as well. It was nice to take his glasses off because it was awesome to paint his eye. D. T. , talk to me first about some of the injuries you sustained and i want to mention as you do, youre still active duty, arent you . I am. Im still active duty. First 100 disabled airman ever to reenlist in the air force. Im pretty happy that im still able to serve because its hard to find a job that you truly love and i love being in the did i ever think of myself to be this person that people look up to me . No. This is never going to be my ideal job. I was going to be an operator. Do my job calling air strikes, but my injuries, 80 of my body had third degree burns. I almost died three times. They told me ill never walk again and ill be on a res pir rarity for my life, and two months after they told me that i walked on my own out of the hospital. Your spirit is undeniable. Im not going to put you on the couch, president bush, but rod said he thinks this is as beneficial for you as it is for them. No question about it. Its beneficial so it keeps me active so im not sitting on the couch chewing day. Its a great learning experience and it keeps me in touch with our vets in a unique way. When i was president i said im gonna have your back in a minute and in the post presidency i said im going to help our vets as much as i can for the reminder of my life. Chris, what dont americans get about transitioning back to civilian life for a lot of you folks . I dont think they get the fact that when veterans transition back to civilian life, they dont need a handout. They dont want favors. They want opportunities. I have the privilege of helping veterans now in my post military job helping them find employment. We hear we want to hire vets, we cant find them. It sounds like an excuse to me. Theyre out there. Give them the opportunity. Theyll excel.
