Right away everything thats black democrat. Youre not going to get any democratic votes. You have to rely on 237 republicans. That leaves you a margin error of 21 votes. You can lose 21 votes. You have 27 who say no. But are they saying were absolutely no or are we saying were likely know . If you talk to people, their best hope is this, that those likely noes at the end of the day for their own political reasons they say they want to vote no but if its a close vote on the pass they will come around. The risk is, these things can cascade. If you dont have the votes people hold back. If it looks like it doesnt pass, suddenly they all rush to vote no and youve got a massacre on your hands. Its a big risk if they put this thing on the floor tomorrow and theyre not sure theyre at 216. The other alternative isnt great, which is pull the bill and start over. Is that a realistic option . In a formal procession, christian leaders marched into the church sepulcher. The faithful say jesus tomb was opened by gods command. Today, its opened again, following a renovation that was hundreds of years in the making. The tomb has been closed to the public for nine months for the renovations. This is a great day. You should not just name one person. You should name a successor, just in case. You also need a living will. That essentially communicates with the doctors, with the hospital, tells them what you want in terms of end of life care, should it come to that. Finally, and this is one that people may not know they need. A hipaa consent form. If you want your parents doctors to share the information with you, they have to sign a consent. Sign a release. The doctors have the forms. Also need that . Hopefully, you dont need that. If you take off the steps we just talked about, you shouldnt need that. But if you dont do this, you may have to go through an expensive and emotional Legal Process in order to get the control you need to help your parents. If the legal pieces are in place, now the medical care issues. Thats right. It is important that even if youve got siblings, youve got one point person in the family who is going to be the one communicating with all the doctors. It can get really complicated. It is easier if they can all channel the information through one person. Preferably someone local, living in the same place as the parent. Going to the appointments in person is really, really helpful. I learned this from my own mother when she was taking care of my dad. Take notes. Write your questions down. Bring them with you because youre going to be in that room. It is going to be hard to remember everything. If you can use one medical group, you can empower your doctors to talk to each other. Electronic medical records make is but having it all under the os mi auspices of one roof makes it easier. What about the finances piece of it . What do you need to know if you take this on for your parents . Couple of things. Documents, where are they . Your parents should talk to you. Like a birth certificate, Social Security card . All of that. Also, list of the passwords. Who are all the important people to talk to. The accountant, the financial adviser, the attorney. What your parents want. My stepfather actually has this document that he calls a letter of instruction and suggestion. Not a legal document. But it lays it all out. Where is everything . Who needs to be called . What does he want . What are the passwords . You update it once a year. It is an incredible gift for the kids. It really is. This can seem overwhelming. People might think, i dont know where to begin. What is the first step . You may want to get some help in terms of organizations that are out there to w y aarp has great resources. I tend to be like the first person in a restaurant because i go to bed early. What are some of the rules, you know, some families like to linger, you have your wine, you dont want to leave until the last sip. Is there an unwritten rule o the table. A restaurant is a business and tables are real estate. Okay. And the rule of thumb is two top or two people will take an hour and a half to two hours. Four top will take about two hours. Anything larger than that, three or four hours. When people decide to stay too long, what happens is the seating plan gets completely destroyed. And then you have a line out the door. Then you get this embarrassing situation where the manager may say, you got to go. So i say if you want to keep the party going, you know, go to the bar, go somewhere else.
