17th hour of this metro shutdown. It has become abundantly clear today this is not a quick fix, there are 22 teams spread out underground throughout the area going over 100 miles of track so far. As they still have a lot of work ahead of them. Now, this is Mcpherson Square station where monday morning fire led to this safety shutdown. You cant get on any line at all. One rider, well, he summed it up like this. Metro is sick and needs to go to the doctors. Im sure they closed it for very good reason. Inspectors found after mondays fire termed as alarming, the damage to the electrical jumper cables was described as disturbingly similar to what they found after smoke filled the plaza station last year, and a passenger. Jumper lines arent like power strips. Sends electricity into the third rail, which then power the train, but, smoke incidents, fires last year, thats double 2014 number, this shutdown looks to add up how many of those cables are damaged. What else . Riders nerves, for one, trying to figure out how to get to work. So this is lunch hour, and Franklin Square crowded, find out how people got to work today. How did you do it . I had to take a bus. Drive part of the way, walked the other part of the way. Oh, i had to drive. Ya, i jogged. Jogged into work . Yes. Much like metro electrical cables, riders say there has been more damage to metros already damaged reputation. I dont think it necessarily changes things, probably was time to do inspection. I dont know much, but there is Something Interesting if it got shutdown today. Moving forward the question now is metro will eventually reopen, how many of these passengers will return . So the Million Dollars question right now, where do we stand . Well, the latest words that we got from metro this afternoon is that 22 teams that are made up of engineers, that are made up of contractors, that are made up of modest staffers, by 1 00 p. M. Had only completed 50 of that job. So you can extrapolate from there, there is a lot more work left to do. We hope to find out exactly how far theyve progressed from that, as we continue this evening. We turn it over now to fox5 matt ackland, matt standing by on 395 in southwest. Matt . Reporter yes, we sure are, fits, will font plaza, thought it would be a great spot to show you just how traffic is doing this afternoon rush. Im going to way so you can look down, once again 395 behind me, this is rush hour, so it has been creeping along, rush hour looked like this before. Appears possibly a lot of people either left early today or possibly they just stayed home and telle commuted. Dc officials little time to plan but sprung into action this morning, and as i speak officers are deployed at major intersections directing traffic and the helicopter that Police Helicopter is up right now, if fact, just flew by us, it is looking out for traffic issues tonight. Earlier today, the chief of Police Issued order saying that those intersections were police and ddot officials are directing traffic, red light camera finds are not going to be enforced. Keep in mind thats only where you see personnel directing you through the traffic, not just any regular intersection with a camera. You will get a ticket there, if you dont see Police Officers. We caught up with the mayor today, and she told us those who drive d dot buses really stepped up to the plate today to help the commute. We also asked her about the quick decision to close down metro, and the mayor, she understands, why they did it for safety reasons, but she also added this station. Having metro is not a nicety, we need it to operate in a safe way so people can live, work, do business in d. C. Normally. Thats our expectation, the district is a big funder of metro. And we will make sure it has what it needs to be reliable, but we under want to understand how they are reaching decisions like this. Back out live to give you idea where i am standing, la font plaza, looking to the maryland side there is direction going toward maryland, the opposite direction, going toward virginia by the way what was interesting today, is that i saw a cab driver here, and i wanted to been, i thought he would be completely busy but he said no, when he drove into virginia, or he drove he said traffic was bad. Once into the city no problems at all, he thought it was going to be a really busy day but a lot of people must have stayed home. So it wasnt as busy as he first thought. Live at la font plaza, matt ackland, fox5 local news. With metro shutdown, commuters faced when several transportation challenges, maybe not so much just sitting in traffic but trying to figure out how they were going to get where they needed to go. Some things managed to go right while others went drastically wrong. Caitlin roth here to hand out her metro mayhem report card. Who scored high five. Who deserves low fives . I think there is more highs than lows, which is the good news, we new it was coming, anticipation was there, everyone prepared. Thats the good first start. Yes, were facets of the morning that went smoother than get to work today. For many it was an issue as well as for those who had to go to school. Lets start off with that. Students in the district, and send cents were excused today, while some Charter Schools were even closed. Due to the metro shutdown. And dc Public Schools that were short on teachers today, sent emails and robo qualls out to parent looking for help. For those reasons i am giving dc Public Schools a high five for how they handled it today. First low five goes to traffic of course with no metro many forced to finds other ways of transportation of course caused chaos on the roadways, for those used to taking the metro every morning. And these High School Student hasnt you see right here from alabama, they agree with me, as they headed around the district. See the sites on a bus obviously werent going anywhere too quickly with the gridlock around town. Now, speaking of buses, while trains were not running today, metro buses were. They were packed due to the limited travel options. Also the traffic m added few minutes to your time, but, for still having this as option we gave bus service a high five. Another high five to capitol bikes who is offering free 24 hour memberships and Coral Service today. All trips under 30 minutes are free. While usage fees will still apply to longer trips. Now the deal will be available at all 372 bike share stations, if you couldnt find a bike, didnt feel like peddling yourself, petty cab also provided commute areas chance to get to their destination this morning and this evening. And finally, if you are willing to pay a little extra, you could always call an uber to take you where you needed to go. The Transportation Network set a cap on it surcharge, this was of course to help customers with demand expected at a record high. Finally special high five goes to nando chicken restaurant for what they called a cure for the metro blues. The restaurant chain offered free chicken to diners who presented their smart trip card at any the deal called the nando dash also available to customers who dont take their food to go. So there you have it, despite metro being shutdown today, everything actually seemed to be okay. Now the highs did outweigh lows. Traffic was still traffic. But hopefully tomorrow the trains are back up and running and this is the only time that we have to do this. Well see, though, but at least it is nice that we know how to prepare for such occasion if it does happen again. Indeed. And there wasnt a ton of snow we had to deal with either. Weather couldnt have been better today. Maybe some people enjoyed the opportunity to take the longer way and walk into work. So it was that did help out a little bit. And i love how some took advantage of making this a marketing effort for them. Business, yes, business, too. A lot of people maybe because it was so nice, lets take the day off. Taking a look from high above, look how beautiful it is outside. Gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous, that woman you heard, in tom fitz work. Perfect day for that. So lets check in with sue palka, find out, will this continue . In case metro is closed tomorrow, and thats a good possibility, but, you know, they say they were going to open at 5 00 a. M. Well finds out at 6 00 hopefully they will stick to the original plan. But we can do this if we have tonight we proved that yesterday and today. Definitely lot more traffic on my way into work about 1 00 today than i would normally see. Boy there would have been a lot more complaints if this had been a pouring down rain day, right . We are even thinking the chance every showers we thought we might see few of this afternoon as frontal boundery came through, greatly diminished, kind of cap on the atmosphere, it doesnt look like we will see much of anything. If you see anything quite isolated and boy is it nice today. These temperatures are just about perfect. Weve been as high as 73 here in the district down to 72 now. But wait. Check out fredericks berg, 81 degrees. Annapolis, you are cooler due to the water 66 degrees. And it is 77 out in cumberland. So just gorgeous afternoon. Eightyfour in wilmington, feels like beach weather there, but you can see that it is a little cooler behind our front. And cooler air will come into town tomorrow. Not terribly cold. Still mid and upper 60s, still little cold air showing up on the weather map, and we will be getting colder as we head closer to the weekends. For this evening, Storm Tracker radar, not finding anything but maybe couple of spotty little showers here and there. The frontal boundery just to the west, you can see the clouds with it. Most of the showers that did fire up were closer to the highlands, and those fizzled out, as theyve moved closer to the belt way. Keep an eye on this closely, if we do see shower as our front gets closer it will be quite isolated, it is warm out ahead of it, it will be little cooler behind it, and you know what, we are getting ready for Saint Patricks day tomorrow. Looks like pretty good shape as well although we cant completely eliminate the chance for shower even for tomorrow. Keep isolated evening shower 68 degrees, most of you will not see any rain, by 9 00, 62, and by 11 60. A wonderful wednesday, walkable wednesday, and we will see if we will be doing this all over again tomorrow. But we will have some ups and downs on your seven day forecast little later, sarah, laura, back to you. Thanks, sue. The Prince Georges CountyPolice Office here shot officer jacai colson outside the district three station last sunday intends today shoot him not knowing who he was. Thats what police chief hang said at News Conference in Upper Marlboro today. Chief told reporters unnamed officers saw a man with a gun during a chaotic attack on the station and perceived him as a threat. Fox5s paul wagner joins us live outside the courthouse in Upper Marlboro with the story. This is just such a tragedy, paul. Reporter it sure is, sarah and lawyer, a and this is something that the Police Department is really struggling with. Chief of Police Coming out today and talking a little bit more about it, and as you know, for a monday, we new this was a incident, and at that time during a News Conference at Police Headquarters chief said that it was an err and the round fired from an officer that had hit officer colson, but today, outside the courthouse here, the chief became much more specific saying that in fact the officer who fired that shot intended to hit officer coal ton. In the kay oath i can minutes after police say michael ford opened fire on the district three station with a 40 caliber handgun, six officers jumped into action, five of them came from the station, and the other jacai colton drove up as the shooting errupted jumping out of his car, plane clothe, without protective vest, firing firearm. Weve known since monday officer was shot dead by friendly fire now the police chief has confirmed the shooting was intentional. I do not believe that any Police Officer intentionally fired at another police i believe that a Police Officer fired at an armed individual who they perceived to be a threat to them. Police have so far confirmed four officers fired their weapons during those confusing two minutes. But, where those shots were fired from, and with what kind of weapons, have not yet been disclosed. Prosecutors said today michael ford fired more than 20 shots at the station, at least one at another officer, two cars, and an ambulance. Today outside the courthouse, neither the chief nor the states attorney were willing to go any further than the officer who fired the fatal shot thought he was firing at a threat. Every policeinvolved shooting that we have in this department, we have a policy whereby we review every aspect of that shooting. We have that process in place so the public has the opportunity to trust us, to know there is an independent review that occurs in every single situation, and this one will be no different than that. During the bonds review hearing, this man in the Black Brothers father, and said they had nothing to do with it and what was being said he said was hearsay. Told the judge one of the brother videotaping the shooting not because he wanted to be a youtube celebrity but because no one would believe him. Couple of other things now about the brothers, one of the brothers ambulance dollars during his bail hearing today, he fainted, judge took a break, and gave him some time to get himself together, and then they had the bonds hearing continue. There were several family members in the court today, that were speaking for the brothers, trying to get them released on bond, and saying that one of the brothers, elijah, just 18 years old and attends buoy high school. Couple things about this Police Officer colson. We know he was undercover narcotics officer. When he showed up that day again he was in plane clothes. I asked the chief today, if he had his badge around his neck on a chain. Any of have you seen Law Enforcement around courthouses or other places you may see this, officers often wear their badges around their next on chains, if theyre not in uniform, but the chief wasnt willing to say whether or not that was the case. One other thing, that lots of times these officers who are off duty have a way to identify other officers, because they are Police Officer. Sometimes it is secret hand signal we dont know in there was attempt to be made by officer cold on, still sole parts of this investigation that are still coming together, live in Upper Marlboro paul wagner, fox5 local news. And now, in fact, as if we needed more sports here. You know, right . Year around football, everyone loves football, you need it year around, outdoors, indoors, indoor football seems to be back. It is a drink . That sound like a meal, shake, some kind . And a lot of calories . And i would think that they would serve it through the Cherry Blossom festival. Through sunday, ten tonightly gone is that correct what theyy . Didnt they just push back the Cherry Blossom. And it actually begins on sunday. Come on, starbucks, dc, maybe you guys can at least make it last a little longer. Well see how good it is, how well it goes over. Probably true. I mean it, sounds good, like a meal would be good, enough calories in that. Yes, it does sound good. The big news yesterday the beak bloom pushed ban to next week because some finicky weather over the past week, little chillier compared to the week before. And blooms are very sensitive to the temperature changes. So now looking to next week, well show you that in a second. Live look outside, beautiful end to the day. Gorgeous afternoon, you can feel the real mild change in the air, maybe that will help some of the blossoms. Temperatures into the 70s, even as we speak. Lets go to the maps though. We start with the Cherry Blossom update. We first told but last night at 10 00. Peak begins, now expected next wednesday, or thursday, that would be march 23rd to the 24th, when 70 of those trees are in bloom. The cherry trees, and it is expected to last four to ten days, usually, very weather dependent, and of course there is could be happening after a very cold weekend, so we will see if that get pushed back even further. I wouldnt doubt it when you see this weekend temperatures, and conditions. All right, another thing about today, the wednesday daylight equal parts 12 hours of daylight with sunset at 7 17 p. M. So we are totally equal at this point with daylight and darkness. Starting tomorrow, we get the minute more of daylight. And we will slip the scales to the longer days as we head toward the summer solsus, so thats coming up in june. Temperatures outside right now, just so nice. Seventytwo in washington, 70 gaithersburg, look how warm in manassas, 77, and 78 fredericks berg. Cooler along the chesapeake, 66 annapolis, 67 in baltimore. This is one of those days in the northeast where it really pace to be in d. C. Versus say boston where they are 46 compared to 72. Those poor bostonians, dont get any of the nice spring weather. They usually to wait until late april or may for. Thatil place to be across the country, 70s here, 60s, 50s, across the northern planes, it is warm, in the 70s and the 80s in the southern planes, so typical march temperature map where you have that gradient of all different temperatures. Storm tracker radar not showing much, cold front coming the area, watching one shower move out toward gainesville. Just northeast of warrington about to cross 66. So if you are under the little shower, you might actually be seeing moderate rainfall, otherwise not seeing much out there. I would say for tonight just isolated shower, along that cold front as it moves through. There is some cooler air behind it, but i think tomorrow is pretty mild. The actual cool air doesnt really arrive until friday. So still mild on thursday, with jet stream pattern showing temperatures in the 60s. It takes a dip by friday. High temperatures are mainly in the 50s, maybe briefly hitting 60 washington and point southward. But that cool air will then begin what will be even colder air coming in for the weekend. So, last day of spring, or i mean, every winter saturda and it is not going to feel like spring at all. Weekends coastal storm still watching this one very closely, primarily moving out to sea but it grazes the shore, enough, it is going to spread some precipitation, rain likely south and east of dc. Some snow expected to mix in during the day on sunday, for washington, best chance of any accumulation will be the higher elevations, rain to snow, there, and while i think on march 20th it is very, very hard to get any snow to stick out there, we could still see some on the grassy surfaces specially north and west of washington but any accumulations look to be quite minor. Seven day forecast, 68 on your Saint Patricks day, beautiful day, cooling down friday, still nice, 06 degrees, sun to clouds saturday, 50, spring begins, but what a nasty start with the rain to snow mix. And it is chilly with high of just 45. Luckily, though, first week of spring, look little better once we get past the chilly raw weekends, see temperatures climbing back to the 50s by this time next week. Thats a look at your seven day forecast, lawyer, a back over to you. Coming up just ahead metro says ongoing inspections that caused todays shutdown are 50 complete.
