Tulare Union High School is one of 10 teams in the country to be named as a finalist in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest.
The nationwide education competition challenges students in grades 6-12 to use STEM skills to help with local issues affecting their communities.
Six students in Tulare Union's Principles of STEM class created a dashboard-mounted device that uses artificial intelligence to detect stop signs and traffic lights and alerts the driver.
The team juggled the challenges of learning from home amid a coronavirus pandemic to develop a device that has real-world safety applications. Traffic collisions are among the leading causes of teenage deaths and injuries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
