All day messages on our cell phones warning of these high winds. My friend al roker can tell us whether well have more to this to come. As a matter of fact, we talked about this yesterday, this was going to be a problem. And the athletes fly the highest. Today we had multiple reminders, and not the kind you ever want to see of just how dangerous those events can be. 16yearold tatsuga was lighting up his second run on the halfpipe when he did something every snowboarder fears. Oh, my goodness. Reporter coming off a trick, his board caught the lip of the course and came crashing down. For a few scary moments the teenager lay on the snow not moving. Just really got hammered right there. Reporter then tatsuka sat up wfr being pulled away on a stretcher. The latest report said he was not seriously injured. He is just the latest to take a spill. Snowboarders and skiers have been battling elements over the last couple of days, and in some cases, losing. For lugers, the challenge may be the track itself. Last night a collective inhale from the crowd when Emily Sweeney lost control and slammed into the track. That is a hard hit. That was a scary moment. Horrific. We were standing next to emilys parents and they stopped breathing for five minutes. Reporter fellow luger tucker west and his dad were in the stands relieved when sweeney got up n seemed okay. Feel a little shaky right now but i know i caught a good amount of air. Reporter sweeney thankfully walked away with no broken bones. This is always our biggest fear. Sochi, i try to brush it off like it didnt bother me, but it was devastating, and i had to find the love for the sport again. I dug deep and ups and downs and this awful injury you guys are probably aware of in new zealand. That really tested my strength of how much i wanted this and to show up and deliver that run, my heart was in it. Your mom said she never saw you cry like that as you did today. Yeah, it hit hard. I was so beside myself. I had been sleeping every single night, you know, running this vision of winning this olympics and what it would mean to me and my family and the team that surrounds me and supports me. And we did it. We did it. And we did it for the u. S. you had to give us a little drama. The second run thats what my mom said. Were you sweating it . That was a little scary. It was a little nerveracking. Why do you do this to us every time . Its what i do. Im sorry. When you fell it surprised me and i didnt realize how often snowboarders fall in these kinds of situations but it was up to that final run. You were in second place. You were at the top of the mountain. You knew you had to hit this incredible score to get first. Did you think to yourself, ive got this . It was honestly, on the chairlift up i was like, i dont think ive got it. Then i dug deep. Ive got this. On the ride down, i dont know. And its an internal battle with these feelings and you have to overcome them. Im standing at the top. Not only did i have to do a run ive never, ever done before on a snowboard. Ive never linked the combination of tricks that i did. One of those put me in the hospital in new zealand but i had to do it bigger and better. I just remember standing at the top and highfiving my team. I watched the footage and my eyes just dont blink. Im laser focused on the run. The flag wasnt blowing, you know, to symbolize theres too much wind in the course. Sorry, im freaking out thinking about it. I just dug deep and realized that this is my life. This is what i do. And im going to have some fun with it. And i just sent that run and it really worked out for me. This is your moment. Your gold medal moment. President clinton once called the dmz the scariest place on earth. We visited it today with the help of u. S. Army colonel steven lee, secretary of the United Nations command military armistice commission. We were given an exclusive moment by moment account of one north korean soldiers bid for freedom. He was driving. Reporter this morning, nbc news is the First Western news outlet to get a glimpse of the path that a desperate north korean soldier took when he made a mad dash for freedom. Back in november, that soldier ochong sun scrambled across the dmz, the heavily guarded border that separates the two koreas. Its widely considered one of the most dangerous places on earth and we were given a rare tour. The daring escape that captivated people around the world started in a speeding jeep. Cameras on the south korean side captured the defection as it unfolded. The vehicle blowing through a north korean guard post and then crashing into a ditch. That ditch that you see on their side, just about ten yards away, is where his jeep got stuck. He was trying to drive across the dirt just to drive across . Right. And then when he realized he couldnt, he got out. As he took about two steps, as you saw in the video, there were about four north korean soldiers that started to shoot at him. Reporter that soldier, the first defector to pass through the heavily guarded area since 1984. These were part of the 24 rounds that we have physical evidence of. Reporter the joint security area located in panmunjom village, the peace village, meant to encourage diplomatic exchanges and is the only place where north and south koreans can stand face to face. It must have been astonishing to have gunshots ring out here in one of the most tense places in the world. This place is different than all of the other places along the demilitarized zone. Its specifically for dialogue so we shouldnt have provocations like that. That was significant they fired in this area. Can we go see where you found the soldier . Its just right there. So he ran the same path . This is basically the path he ran. It was quite remarkable when you see the video, right, of him running and he w getting shot five to six times. Hes taking bullets on this whole run . Right. But he wasnt found right away. No. It took south korean soldiers and u. S. Servicemen nearly 15 minutes to find the defector. You can see him here hiding under leav, helpless. The south korean soldiers crawled up from thi rescue him . Thats because we knew that their guard post there could see here and so instead of just walking up to him, they literally had to crawl on their belly inch by inch to get to him. For all you knew, if they see him being rescued, they take another shot . Right. Exactly. We assessed to be prudent measures to rescue him but also try to protect our forces. Thats incredible. The north korean tower is right there. They could they probably are watching us right now. Yes, they are. They probably know what were talking about. Bullet holes still scar this wall. I count one, two, three, four, five. Reporter as the defector was medevaced to seoul where he was treated for several gunshot wounds. Colonel lee worked to lower the tension ricocheting through the area. We opened that door and used a bullhorn which is very unusual for us to make sure they got the message. What was the message . The message was very simply that, hey, one of your soldiers dime our side. We have him. He needs medical attention. Hes getting that now. Well conduct an investigation and when its done, ill come and talk to you about it. We did that once. The North Koreans actually signaled to us with a flashlight that they wanted to hear it again because they didnt really hear it well. So we actually read the message again so we knew they received, and so i think that helped to also deescalate and make sure they knew what happened and how we read the situation. You literally shouted it over a bullhorn . Right. From this area so that they could clearly hear it, yeah. Because if you called, what would have happened . We actually did try to call. They didnt answer the phone. That would have been a very good time for them to pick up the phone. I think so. Reporter the u. N. Command does call north korea some three times a day. This is the bat phone . Yeah. Dont worry. Im not going to pick it up. Reporter but north korea hasnt picked up the phone either since 2013. Thats incredible. The access and the peek behind the curtain. It was. The whole world watched that. So extraordinary to see a north korean soldier defect and he was under a hail of gunfire. So many medals youve had over the years. I keep watching these young snowboarders just admire you and want to be like you. Whats the advice you have for a lot of these young girls . You know, its been a privilege to get to go to five Winter Olympics, and we brought one of the most talented, young womens halfpipe teams weve ever brought. Its been a privilege to get to mentor them. I always encourage them not to be defined by what they do. It helps to enjoy what you do. How you finish at the end of the day doesnt equate to how you feel about yourself. Did you find some of the snowboarders, some on the team here for the first time were saying to you, okay, whats your best advice . Ive got nerves. I feel, you know, intimidated by being here at the olympics . Absolutely. This isnt your standard snowboard contest. Much like chloe kim right now. I was the teenage gold medalist. I know what shes going through. I try to make myself available. I was so proud to see those girls do so well yesterday. You wound up in fourth place in pyeongchang and there were some people who says the judging was a little harsh. What did you think when you looked back. Im sure you saw the video of the run. What did you think of that . I put down my best performance. As an athlete, you can only control so many things. And what the judges think and what the other women are doing and what the weather is doing, those arent things within my pay grade. So im happy to just be part of it and leave it all on the halfpipe. I love what you wrote on instagram. What you build in the dark will be what supports you when its time to shine. Were you just thinking about all those dark mornings and times when you were practicing and putting in the work . Yeah, thats actually a quote from my new book that came out. Its a book on motivation. And i aim to just help people define success in a healthy way. After five winter Olympic Games, i know all about success and failure. Fifth olympics. Wow. Coming up, a different kind of wowzer, al and craigs korean sauna adventure. First, this is today on nbc. Welcome back to pyeongchang. As you know, it is valentines day. And who doesnt love a spa day on valentines day . Al and craig feel that way. They visited a korean sauna for this special occasion. How sweet. How did it go, guys . You know, well, korean saunas are called gimgilbongs. You can spend the day in heated bliss with the one you love. Happy valentines day craig melvin. Happy valentines day al roker. I thought it might be fun to share a little jimjilbang. Im going to celebrate the day we celebrate love in an indoor oven with you. This is a jimjilbang, translation, sauna rooms. Its where koreans come to unwind and hang out. Its just as common for seniors as it is the younger generation. Even families. And today, for two wild and crazy guys our first heated room. The salt room. Lets get salted . You bet. And the salt room was heated to a pleasant 149 degrees. Oh, even those those are hot rocks. Those are hot. My. Heads down on the wood . Sweating in the sauna is intended to detoxify. Would be great if they had a room lined with meat so you could get meat sweats. This is the original korean barbecue. Im starting to smell you sizzle a little bit. You might be right. Once you get used to this, not so bad. Youre right. I kind of enjoyed the feeling of the rock on my back. That was a nice little warmup. Charcoal. The charcoal room was an absolute treat after that salt room. A balmy 100 degrees. Way more comfortable. It is. The charcoal room, i can dig this. Heres what happens. You start in the salt room and get that sweat going. Now any kind of heat, youre just sweating like crazy. Al and i had no idea how true that was about to be. Oh, my goodness. We should have known anything shaped like a probably not the best news. Im out. Im out. Okay. Got to go. Oh, my god, my biscuits are burning. That one may not be for us. But luckily, we were about to chill out. Literally. Oh, god. Yes. The cold room at 32 degrees was like being inside a frosty, and it was a delight. Nothing like a refreshing drink after being in an oven and an igloo. And i like the sippy cups. Thats good. Sweet at first. A little tart on the back end. The good newts really sweet. Speaking of sweet, we took a quick stroll through candy land and then settled in for a jimjilsnooze. What a valentines day, uncle al. Day. Ah. You boys come on.
