Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, the maverick owner of the prized French winery Cos D’Estournel, had a fascination for India that not only led him to put an elephant on his labels but also earned him the sobriquet, the ‘Maharaja of Saint Estephe’.
He also had a clever marketing ploy: he marked some 12,000 bottles of a batch as ‘Returned from India’ (which they were) and successfully sold them at a premium back in Europe claiming that they had actually improved after two journeys by sea and a sojourn in the tropics.
