graham. penn bradley was on the left of the screen and catherine graham was on the right of the screen it was a very equal and fare shot that showed the dynamic of their relationship, and when i had first initially put the scene together and i did it conventionally with cuts, it didn't ring true as much as a kind of theatrical stage play where the audience just sits there and they do all the editing you go to a play you're the editor. you decide when to look at them when an actor compels you to pay attention you watch them more than the other actor and i felt this this should be more like theater when they first meet we should see the theater of that dynamic between the publisher of the post and the editor of the post having this breakfast where they don't agree on very much. i thought it was much stronger than play the hell out of the scene on two shot. >> i'm curious just now that we've seen so many films going into digital age, what is it about film that still in your opinion is originally thought you have of when you were in second grade? >> yes, yeah. what one i was in second grade when it started, and last summer it came out on the big screen and i just couldn't believe it. it just its just seem like a dream. >> were you a part of the movie at all. >> i was especially at the very beginning. but once i got to meet the director and some of the creative people behind loves it. he watches it over and over again. >> and he does jt he laughs the whole way through. of course he's six-year-old boy he thinks anybody in their underpants is funny. but any way, let's talk about why your books are the kids love them so much. why do you think they're drawn to them? to humor. number one but i also think that they're themes in the books that kids really respond to like themes of kindness and empathy and in the dog man books there are themes of redemption and of being true to yourself and i think kids real real late to that as well. >> you know, when you were growing up you have been very could vocal talking about the fact you were dyslexic and you had attention deficit hyper activity disorder. and that writing and reading really helped you. how did that work? >> well, you know, my mom was really strum mental in that because i didn't think i liked to read when i was young. and my parents -- my didn't really like the books i was choosing and so my mom felt like it was more important that i was reading than what i was reading so she took me to the library and let me pick out whatever i wanted, and she made sure that i was reading for fun every single day and that changed my life. it actually opened up the world of literacy to me and i think that's one of the reasons why i'm a writer today, because my mom let -- she encouraged me to read for fun. >> yeah. in fact that's one of your big mantras let kids choose their own books, right? >> yes, yes, yeah. it's very very important. studies show kids who read for fun every day do better in spelling, vocabulary and math. they're better communicators, and they're actually kinder, more empathetic people it's very important. >> the usa today called you the savior of the reluctant reader. what do you say to that? >> what's the secret. >> i feel very grateful to be called that. it's a good time for children's books. a lot of great series out there. a lot of books outhe kids. and so i'm happy to be a part of it. >> well in fact before we go we have to talk about dog man. what was that inspiration? how did that all come to be? >> well, dog man started when i was a child as well. captain underpants and dog man both got their start when i was in second grade. it's just kind of a continuation of captain underpants in a way. there's a lot of silliness an lot of humor, but, um, a lot more, um, important themes i think like kindness and empathy and redemption that, um, the kids are really responding to and, um, so dog man is kind of like my love letter to dogs and i'm very
