Trade union leaders suspect foul play, seek action against the accused
The relay hunger strike tent at the Gandhi statue, near the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), set up to protest against the move to privatise Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), was gutted in a fire at around 5 a.m. on Sunday. The fire was brought under control by the fire service personnel. The cause of the fire is not yet known. Police reached the spot and gathered details.
Alleging that it was the handiwork of some anti-social elements, leaders of various trade unions demanded action by the police against the accused. Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner G. Srijana has initiated Sustainability and Resilience Programme (SRP) as part of the United Nations Development programme (UNDP-GoI) Project, which aims at supporting the city in institutional strengthening, governance and various developmental activities to achieve long-term sustainability.
Ms. Srijana said that the programme will be implemented by the ‘Sustainability and Resilience Unit (SRU)’ and its upcoming four cells, Environment Cell, Climate Cell, Disaster Management (DM) Cell and Human Resource Development (HRD) Cell. The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has identified 17 burial grounds and crematoriums in various zones for the performing the final rituals of COVID-19 patients.
The move would ease the pressure on the crematorium at Gnanapuram, the officials said.
The GVMC officials have attached burial grounds to various COVID-19 hospitals. The final rites of the COVID patients dying at the Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) and Pineapple Colony COVID Care Centre will be performed at the Krishnapuram burial ground. Similarly, the bodies of the patients from the King George Hospital (KGH) and 12 other hospitals in the city limites will be sent to the crematorium at Gnanapuram.
