May 24, 2021 ⚾: Four Noles Earn All-ACC Honors CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Mat Nelson, Parker Messick, Bryce Hubbart and Robby Martin earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors, the league announced Monday. Earlier Monday, Nelson was named the ACC Player of the Year while Messick was named the Pitcher and Freshman of the Year. Nelson, FSU’s sophomore catcher, and Messick, FSU’s ace, were named to the first team. Hubbart and Martin both earned third team honors, while Messick and Hubbart highlighted the All-Freshman Team. Nelson leads the country with 22 home runs entering the ACC Tournament. He led FSU with 63 runs batted in and started 48 of 50 games for the Seminoles, throwing out 16 would-be basestealers on the season. Nelson is the first FSU player since Buster Posey in 2008 with over 20 home runs in a season.

Syracuse’s Stephen Rehfuss and Brett Kennedy were named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference team following the conclusion of the 2021 regular season. Rehfuss was one of six attacks selected while Kennedy was one of three long-stick midfielders. The conference’s five head coaches voted on the conference’s team. Syracuse’s two selections were the fewest in the conference. Rehfuss leads the Orange in points (53) and has the most points by an SU player since 2016. He’s the only SU player on the Tewaaraton Award Watch List, given to the best collegiate lacrosse player in the country. Rehfuss was added to the list midway through the season after SU’s starting midfield started out the year on the watch list.

Neli Casares-Maher and Alexa Romero were both named to All-Atlantic Coast Conference teams on Tuesday. Casares-Maher was given second team All-ACC honors, and Romero received third team recognition. The announcement comes before Syracuse opens ACC Tournament play on Wednesday with its first round game against Georgia Tech. Casares-Maher led SU in hitting as her .349 batting average is 77 points higher than the next-best hitter, Paris Woods. The senior led, or was tied for the lead, in every notable offensive category this season in 43 starts at shortstop. Casares-Maher’s 11 doubles were also tied for sixth-best in the ACC. It is the first time the Orange, California, native has ever received postseason recognition.

THE FLATS – For the 14 th time in the history of the competition, Georgia Tech has a representative on the United States team for the 48th Walker Cup Match, which will be contested Saturday and Sunday at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Fla. Tyler Strafaci, a 2020 graduate of the Institute begins competition in the biennial competition with his team Saturday at the legendary golf club just a few miles from his hometown of Davie, Fla. The 10 th Georgia Tech alumnus or student-athlete to compete in the Walker Cup, the 22-year-old Strafaci earned his spot on the U.S. team after winning the U.S. Amateur Championship last August in Bandon, Ore., becoming the fourth Yellow Jacket player to win the national title and second in a row.
