Emergency services were called Karangahape Rd about 3:30am to reports several people were fighting. A police statement said while police were dealing with the fight, an unrelated man approached an officer from behind and attacked him, causing him to fall over. The officer was hospitalised suffering a serious concussion and remains in hospital in a stable condition. A 31-year-old man has been charged, police said. The behaviour displayed by this man is unacceptable, said the statement.
