‘Don’t go to Sydney’: WA government warns returning residents may be shut out

WA’s hard border with New South Wales has tightened further, with the state government warning those who travel to the COVID-19 hotspot may no longer be allowed to return home.
WA Chief Health Officer Andy Robertson advised border officials reviewing G2G entry applications to be stricter with exemptions previously given for returning residents, a government spokeswoman said.
India Dehavilland, 18, was desperate to return to Western Australia.

Greater Perth has been plunged into a four-day lockdown amid confirmation the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 is spreading through fleeting contact in the city’s northern suburbs.
WA Premier Mark McGowan made the announcement on Monday evening after a third case was detected in a man in his 30s who worked at the Indian Ocean Brewery Co on June 22, the same night Perth’s initial case – a woman who had recently returned from Sydney – dined there.

The man’s infection was realised just hours after a 32-year-old woman tested positive for the virus after also having minimal contact with the woman at a gym earlier that same day.

There was no such thing as a COVID-19 pandemic playbook when Australia and the rest of the world locked down last year.
