Hamstrung by a shortage of vaccine stock, the Maharashtra government is being forced to temporarily suspend the vaccination drive for the 18-44 age group. Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Tuesday that the government had decided to administer second doses to the 45-plus group with its remainder stock.
âThere is a dearth of vaccines, hence weâre considering temporarily holding off vaccinations for the 18-44 age group. About 2.75 lakh vaccine doses are left for this age group thatâll now be used for the 45 years and above group. Administering the second dose is a priority,â said Tope.

The Maharashtra government has decided to use hospitals attached to medical colleges as treatment centres for Mucormycosis, a serious but rare fungal infection now affecting coronavirus patients, said Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Tuesday.
Symptoms of Mucormycosis, also known as black fungus, include headache, fever, pain under the eyes, nasal or sinus congestion and partial loss of vision.
He said, There could be over 2,000 Mucormycosis patients in the state as of now and with more and more COVID-19 cases coming up, their number would increase for sure.

Amid a shortage of COVID-19 vaccine does, the Maharashtra government on Tuesday decided to divert three lakh vials of Covaxin meant for the 18-44 age group for the use of the people aged 45 years and above. Speaking to reporters, state Health Minister Rajesh Tope also said more than five lakh people above 45 years are awaiting the second dose for the want of the vaccine.

As coronavirus COVID-19 cases are slowly declining in Maharashtra, state Health Minister Rajesh Tope has hinted that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray-led government in Maharashtra may etend the COVID-19 lockdown till May 31.
It is to be noted that Maharashtra government had imposed lockdown-like restrictions in the state from April 22 to May 1 to curb the spread of coronavirus and break the chain of transmission. The lockdown was later extended till May 15 owing to the huge spike in COVID cases and the rising death toll in the state.

Cases of mucormycosis are rising among COVID-19 survivors, causing blindness or serious illness and even death in some cases. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government on Monday announced to provide free treatment to patients with the fungal infection.
Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said, In some districts of the state, COVID-19 survivors are suffering from a fungal disease called mucormycosis. The health department has taken serious note of it. An awareness campaign will be launched and patients with mucormycosis will be treated free of cost under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana.
