What the $900B stimulus means for COVID-19 testing, tracing and vaccines

Congress’ $900 billion COVID-19 stimulus plan includes more than $20 billion for states to expand testing and contact tracing. Another $28 billion would be set aside for vaccine distribution.
The $600-per-person stimulus checks dominated the headlines but, in terms of on-the-ground impact, these elements are the most likely to curb Pennsylvania’s coronavirus case and death rates.
On Tuesday, the state ranked third in the nation for COVID-related deaths behind California and Texas, with 1,044 recorded over the last seven days.
Michael Huff, Pennsylvania’s director of testing and contact tracing, is cautious about what the funding could mean for the state, which has struggled since the spring to ramp up both aspects of its coronavirus response.
