Youth volunteers reach out to families hit by pandemic in Kozhikode
A spike in the number of critical COVID-19 cases and unexpected deaths have prompted many political and religious organisations in the district to voluntarily form their own youth task forces to ensure dignified last rites for victims of the pandemic.
Complying with the safety protocol, they have reached out to many needy families that were going through a painful situation with the death of their dear and near ones.
White Guards, COVID-19 Prevention Armym and Millat Brigade are some of such volunteer units supported by political parties like the Indian Union Muslim League, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and the Indian National League. Many similar volunteer groups supported by organisations like Kerala Catholic Youth Movement (KCYM), Seva Bharati, Muslim Youth League, and Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre are also functional in the district to lend a hand to their fellow beings in need.
Some are vacationing, some are tending to their fish and domestic animals while a few others have already begun ring-fencing their colleagues from possible poaching attempts.
With electronic voting machines to be unlocked on May 2 to decide the fate of political parties in five states, the wait can be nerve-wracking for most politicians. While some have opted for a short break, others have begun preparing the ground.
Leaders of Assam’s Congress-led 10-party Opposition alliance are having to contend with a perceived threat posed by the ruling BJP to poach their candidates or manipulate the results.
So much so that the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) had flown their candidates to Jaipur and Raipur in Congress-ruled Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh soon after the keenly contested three-phase polls ended on April 6.

‘Meet convened by CM to take a call’
An order by District Collector K. Gopalakrishnan banning gathering of more than five persons in all religious places in Malappuram district evoked sharp criticism from different Muslim groups on Friday.
Following protests, Mr. Gopalakrishnan clarified that the ban on gathering in religious places would be in force in areas where prohibitory orders were clamped under Section 144 of CrPC. He also said that an all-party meeting to be convened by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan would take a final decision on the matter on Monday.
