Dehradun: Around 100-150 casualties are feared in the flash flood caused by a glacier burst in Uttarakhand s Chamoli district. The water level has significantly risen in Dhauliganga and Alaknanda, forcing the local administration to issue a Red Alert in the state.
Warnings have been sounded in major areas like Srinagar (Uttarakhand) and Haridwar since Alaknanda river flows from there. The authorities have increased the water flow from the Srinagar dam to control the flash flood marauding down from Chamoli.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat told India Today TV that while one tunnel in the flooded Tapovan hydro project has been cleared, several people are still trapped in another tunnel, adding that rescue teams were not able to reach them on Sunday as it was filled with 35-40 ft debris.
