An earthquake early warning system is now active in Oregon, ready to notify residents of seismic activity.

USGS ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System came online Thursday, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the magnitude 9.1 Great Tohoku, Japan earthquake, according to the Oregon Office of Emergency Management. In honor of the day, Governor Kate Brown also dubbed March 11 as ShakeAlert Day in Oregon.

ShakeAlert doesn t predict when earthquakes will happen, rather it notifies people when one has already begun. State officials say a test of the system will be conducted later this summer the public will be notified in advance once it is scheduled.
