Neither intimate looks into stars’ living rooms nor scantily clad pop stars performing provocative hits have been able to stop audiences from tuning out award shows this year. The ratings for the Grammys were down by 53%. Golden Globes viewership plummeted more than 60%.
For the first time in more than 90 years of Academy Awards history, films released via commercial streaming or video-on-demand may be awarded Oscars on April 25.
In this year of COVID-19 pandemic closures, the Oscars are bypassing the long-standing eligibility rule normally, feature film entries must be shown in a commercial theatre in Los Angeles County for a minimum of three times daily over a week.
In announcing the change, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences the body behind the red-carpet event said “there is no greater way to experience the magic of movies than to see them in a theatre. Our commitment to that is unchanged.”
Hosted by Ariana DeBose (“Hamilton”) and Lil Rel Howery (“Bad Trip”), the pre-show will feature Oscar music and red-carpet coveragefor viewers as well as highlight various nominees and give a sneak peek into the main event. There will also be a post-show “Oscars: After Dark special airing on ABC immediately after the Academy Awards with Colman Domingo (“Ma Rainey s Black Bottom”) and Andrew Rannells (“The Prom”) recapping the night s big moments moments and showing Oscar winners getting their new statuettes personalized.
