Baltimore State s Attorney files FCC complaint against Fox station for bias

Federal Communications Commission about the local Fox News affiliate television station, WBFF Fox 45. Report: Broadband industry fought net neutrality with millions of fake comments

The Office of the New York Attorney General said in a new report that a campaign funded by the broadband industry submitted millions of fake comments supporting the 2017 repeal of net neutrality. The Federal Communications Commission’s contentious 2017 repeal undid Obama-era rules that barred internet service providers from slowing or blocking websites and apps or charging companies more for faster speeds to consumers. The industry had sued to stop these rules during the Obama administration but lost. The proceeding generated a record-breaking number of comments more than 22 million and nearly 18 million were fake, the attorney general’s office found. It has long been known that the tally included fake comments.

The report (pdf), headlined “How U.S. Companies & Partisans Hack Democracy to Undermine Your Voice,” concluded that nearly 18 million of the more than 22 million comments that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) received during its 2017 rulemaking process were fake. “This type of fraud has significant consequences for our democracy,” the report notes. “Federal and state agencies rely on public comments to set standards that govern many aspects of our lives, from public health to consumer protection to the environment, and, in this case, the rules that govern how we share and consume content over the internet.”

Advertisement Hide Net neutrality rules which prohibited ISPs from blocking, throttling, or using paid prioritization of internet traffic were repealed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 2017 when it was controlled by Republicans. Now, the FCC can have a Democratic majority once President Joe Biden fills out the agency. The 3-2 Democratic votes would allow the FCC to move forward with net neutrality restoration, among numerous other things. That’s why numerous advocacy groups have been pressuring Biden to nominate a fifth and final commissioner.
