20 new cases of COVID-19 added in Muskoka over weekend

SHARE ON: The local health unit recorded 20 new cases of COVID-19 across the District of Muskoka over the weekend placing the district at 91 active cases. Nine cases were reported in Muskoka Lakes which now stands at 23 active cases and six were added in Bracebridge pushing the town’s active case count to 28. Table provided by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit from the SMDHU’s Vaccinations Page-May 3rd Two cases were added in Huntsville and one case was reassigned to another health unit placing the town at 19 active cases.  Three cases were added in Gravenhurst and one case was also reassigned to another health unit placing Gravenhurst at 11 active cases.

COVID-19 Simcoe Muskoka:Despite city barriers to block Barrie Freedom Rally, organizer vows it will go ahead

  BARRIE, ONT. The City of Barrie s mayor issued an emergency order to immediately close and fence off Meridian Place to stop the ongoing gatherings in the city s downtown. Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman called the measure necessary following more than a month of protests. Earlier this week, the city said it was determined to develop a plan to put an end to the Barrie Freedom Rally that draws hundreds of people to Meridian Place to protest the government s strict lockdown measures. In a release Thursday, Lehman said, The gatherings that put people s lives at risk need to stop. I want to thank residents of Barrie who have stayed home to keep each other safe at this critical point in the pandemic. The city will continue to pursue additional steps to stop illegal gatherings and hold those responsible accountable.

COVID-19 News: Simcoe Muskoka logs 78 new infections, plus one COVID-19 death

  BARRIE, ONT. Public health officials with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) logged 78 new COVID-19 infections Friday, for a total of 349 cases this week. According to the health unit, a Simcoe County man between 45 and 64 years of age passed away after becoming infected with the virus, bringing the region s COVID-19 death count to 225. Since the arrival of variants in Simcoe Muskoka, at least one COVID-19 death has been reported every week in 2021. There have been 23 virus-related deaths in April. Twelve people lost their lives to the virus in March. To date, 10,383 infections have been reported in Simcoe Muskoka. There are 1,369 active cases currently, including 49 hospitalizations. Over five per cent of COVID-19 cases have been hospitalized. More than two per cent of COVID-19 cases have passed away, states the SMDHU.

Public health has recorded 224 COVID-19 deaths, 22 this month alone. Dr. Barry Nathanson, Stevenson Memorial Hospital s chief of staff, said he s never experienced anything like this throughout his career. We ve never had to redeploy human resources the way we have had to do this time. We ve never had to reconfigure resources such as critical care units the way we have had to do this time. We ve never had to outfit children s hospitals for the provision of adult care. We ve never had our skies darkened by helicopters travelling, carrying patients from place to place.
