ROCHESTER, Minn. - Unemployment and poverty rates increased during the pandemic which in turn created a rise in food insecurity across the region.
Freeborn County says 2,900 people are dealing with hunger this year which is up from 2,730 in 2018.
Channel One Regional Food Bank says the COVID-19 pandemic has aggravated the problem especially in minority communities including Black, Latino and Native American Households.

(ABC 6 News)- Channel One Regional Food Bank’s Executive Director, Virginia Merritt (JD) is being honored with United Way of Olmsted County’s Maude Finch Award for revolutionizing food banking and food shelves across southeast Minnesota.
The award is given by United Way’s Women United group in recognition of a community woman whose service and achievements are outstanding examples of living united to advance the common good through their action, results, and time in one or more of the building blocks for a good quality of life – education, health, income, and basics needs.
Merritt’s dedication to advancing the wellbeing of communities helped created a human-centered, culturally responsive, and streamlined food-box and food-shelf experience for community members.
