The coronavirus (COVID-19) has claimed the lives of five more borough residents, while nearly 250 more confirmed cases of the disease were added to Staten Island’s total, city Health Department data shows. At the same time, hospitalizations in the borough continued to decline to one of the lowest levels this year.

Coronavirus hospitalizations decreased Saturday, but suspected deaths from the virus continued to increase, according to the latest data from the New York City Department of Health. A total of 1,729 Staten Islanders are believed to have died since the beginning of the pandemic, that data indicates. That is up five from the total on Friday. That total includes 1,522 confirmed deaths and 207 probable fatalities. In the past four months deaths increased dramatically compared to the previous four months. A total of 563 Staten Islanders died from Dec. 1 to March 31 while only 55 died from Aug. 1 to Nov. 30, an analysis of the data conducted by the Staten Island Advance/SILive.com shows.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) hospitalizations in the borough have dropped to one of its lowest levels this year, although the disease is believed to have claimed the lives of seven more Staten Islanders. At the same time, nearly 400 new confirmed coronavirus cases have been added to Staten Island’s total, city Health Department data shows. As of Thursday afternoon, 159 coronavirus patients were being treated in the borough’s two hospital systems.
