Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge volunteers sought for Great British Spring Clean

In the past 12 months, people have relied on the places close to home such as local parks and beaches to escape, exercise and play.
The Town Council has this week announced that it is pledging its backing to Keep Britain Tidy’s annual campaign – and it is encouraging Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge residents to do their bit and clear up litter that can blight local places.
The Great British Spring Clean campaign runs from 28th May to 13 June and calls on the public to help the charity achieve a million miles of litter-picking across the UK.

Cllr Norman MacRae, WODC cabinet member for the environment, picks litter Collections are on offer from West Oxfordshire District Council of any bags of litter picked up during the Great British Spring Clean (28 May-13 June). The campaign is a key milestone in Keep Britain Tidy’s calendar, bringing thousands together to clear up neighbourhoods. For 2021, the charity is calling on an army of volunteer ‘litter heroes’ to help it reach a target of a million miles of picking (#MillionMilesMission). All minutes and hours promised will be converted into miles and counted on the Great British Spring Clean website. Councillor Norman MacRae, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “We anticipate a high level of interest from residents in this event as outdoor spaces have proved invaluable in maintaining our mental and physical well-being over the past year, providing many with a place of refuge outside the home.
The organisers of Oxford’s annual neighbourhood cleaning event OxClean had 365 of their litter pickers stolen. But following an appeal on a JustGiving page, they have now been able to buy 250 replacements and are still accepting donations as they need about 100 more. Even so the group is forging ahead with three consecutive Big Clean-up Saturdays on May 29, June 5 and June 12. The Big Clean-up Saturdays will be supporting the Great British Spring Clean initiative and will help to empower people to take action for a greener Britain. Natasha Robinson, OxClean co-ordinator, said: “We’re delighted that Oxford will be taking part in the Great British Spring Clean this year over a period of three Saturdays and because of generosity so far, our charity will be able to continue to support you and your groups with equipment.”
